  • In this study, we designed an environment friendly, water-based adhesive using the acrylic emulsion method as a replacement for solvent-based adhesives, which are most commonly used in layered laminates for flexible food packaging. We designed adhesives with different combinations of anionic, non-ionic, and phosphoric ester surfactants, and with different concentrations of chain transfer agent (CTA). We also examined the effect of the degree of cross-linking by synthesizing and comparing 8 test group adhesives with different types of functional monomers. Additionally, we synthesized 2 other test group pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) using styrene/alpha-methyl styrene/acrylic acid (SAA) semipolymer dispersing agents (with molecular weights of 13,000 g/mol and 8,600 g/mol, respectively) to replace the conventional surfactants. We evaluated whether the 10 test group pressure-sensitive adhesives met the basic physical property criteria required for flexible food packaging by carrying out a physical analysis of their glass transition temperature (Tg), particle size, adhesion, and molecular weight. In our test, 2 test group adhesives manufactured with the combination of anionic and non-ionic surfactants, CTA concentration of 0.2%, and functional monomers of hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) demonstrated molecular weight and flexibility suitable for flexible packaging, with low adhesiveness and small particle size.

  • The chemical properties of SiOC film was studied for inter-layer insulator. SiOC film was formed with non polarity due to the appropriate union by the alkyl and hydroxyl group. An amorphous structure of non polarity can induce the low dielectric constant materials. The chemical properties of thin film can define the bonding structure owing to the ionic variation, and the analysis of chemical properties was researched by the carbon content using the FTIR spectra, and induced the film with non polarity. The electrical properties is the electron flow, and is always not the same as the chemical properties. The electrical properties of SiOC film with various flow rate ratios was analyzed and researched the correlation between the chemical properties. SiOC film showed the increasing of the leakage current after annealing process, and abruptly increased the carbon content at some samples. But the sample with increasing the carbon content decreased the leakage current. It means that the chemical properties is not the same as the electrical properties, and the carbon is related with the variation of the bonding structure, and does not contribute the current flow.

  • Objectives : The specificity of acupuncture point has been a highly controversial subject. Existing researches said that ion-distribution differences are observed on the acupuncture point. This study was conducted under the assumption that multiple ionic changes induced by muscle fatigue would be different between the acupuncture point with non-acupuncture point. Methods : To induce the identical fatigue, twenty subjects performed the knee extension/flexion exercise using the Biodex System 3. ST32 and ST33 as well as adjacent non-acupuncture points were selected. We measured blood lactate and analyzed the median frequency(MF) and peak torque. To obtain the information on the extracellular fluid(ECW), intracellular fluid(ICW) and cell membrane indirectly, we used the multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis(MF-BIA) method. Results : MF, peak torque and blood lactate level of all measurement sites were gradually returned to normal. Re resistance of ST32 had a stronger response, but a non-acupuncture point adjacent to ST33 had a larger response up to 20 minutes post exercise. Ri resistances were similar for both acupoints and non-acupoints. The $C_m$ capacitance of ST32 had a stronger response after inducing fatigue, but ST33 had a smaller response than a non-acupuncture point adjacent to it. Conclusions : In comparison with before and after inducing fatigue, the specificity of acupuncture points was not clearly observed. Hence, we concluded that the body composition factors extraction method had the limitation as a method of finding the specificity of acupuncture points by inducing fatigue.

  • Alkyl ethoxy sulfate type surfactants, widely used in commercial cleansers, are easily adsorbed to skin to often cause skin irritation and inflammation if not thoroughly rinsed nut. In order to replace or complement existing surfactants, we screened the existing surfactants through protein denaturation method, cell cytotoxicity assay and human IL-1$\alpha$ assay, etc. Fourteen surfactants have been chosen from among too irritant anionic, cationic and/or zwitter-ionic ones and investigated for cell cytotoxicity in human fibroblast cell lines using monolayer culture with the thirteen commercially available cleansers for sensitive skin. From these results, we selected 5 surfactants and 2 commercial cleansers (names not shown), such as sodium laureth sulfate (anionic), sodium cocoyl isethionate (anionic), sodium lauroamphoacetate (zwitter-ionic), and cocamidopropyl betaine (zwitter-ionic), alkyl polyglycoside (non-ionic). 20 formulations were made out of 5 surfactants and five of them were chosen through a protein denaturation method (lower than 3 M sodium dodecyl sulfate solution ($13.2\%$)), cell cytotoxicity and human patch test. These five selected formulations containing preservatives were compared to two selected commercial cleansers by cell cytotoxicity and human IL-1$\alpha$ ELISA assay using dermal equivalent. Finally, we selected the best formulation. To this formulation, fructan ($3\%$ or $5\%$) or/and portulaca extract ($3\%$ or $5\%$) well known for its anti-inflammatory and moisturizing effects were added and investigated for cell cytotoxicity using dermal equivalent. In cytotoxicity assay using dermal equivalent, two formulations containing $5\%$ fructan and $3\%$ or $5\%$ portulaca extract were less toxic than the others. In cytotoxicity assay and human IL-1$\alpha$ ELISA using 3D culture, the selected formulation containing $5\%$ fructan and $5\%$ portulaca extract showed better efficiency than those of the others and 2 commercial cleansers. As a result, we could develop a low irritant and safe liquid cleanser.

  • Ethaboxam is a fungicide controlling plant diseases caused by Oomycetes. Efforts were made to improve its fungicidal activity applying formulation technology. Fungicidal activity of ethaboxam against cucumber downy mildew caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis was improved by incorporating polyoxyethylene cetyl ether (PCE) in a wettable powder formulation. It was found that the optimum combination ratio of PCE and ethaboxam was 3:1, and a tank-mix of $150{\mu}g/ml$ of ethaboxam and $450{\mu}g/ml$ of PCE would be as good as the standard 25 % WP formulation diluted to $250{\mu}g/ml$ ethaboxam without PCE in controlling cucumber downy mildew. Based on this results, a wettable powder (WP) co-formulation containing 15% of ethaboxam and 45% of PCE was developed in this study, and tested for its performance in the fields. This co-formulation showed significant improvement in persistence of fungicidal activity and curative efficacy of ethaboxam against cucumber downy mildew. The improved control efficacy was also confirmed for control of grape downy mildew caused by Plasmopara viticola and potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans in the field tests.

  • In the soil washing process, the contaminants are usually removed by abrasion from soil particles using mechanical energy and water However, organic contaminants with low water solubility like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are remained on soil particles. Previous studies have shown that surfactant possessing amphipathic activity enhances the solubility of organic materials. For this reason solutions with surfactants have been used to improve removal of organic contaminants on soil washing process. But, in this manner, many problems were found like complete loss of surfactants and additional contamination by surfactant. The remediation method using microemulsion has been introduced to overcome these disadvantages. In this case, surfactants are recycled by phase separation of microemulsion after remediation. In microemulsion process, the surfactant will be recycled by phase separation of the microemulsion into a surfactant-rich aqueous phase and an oil phase after extraction. That is why remediation concept applying microemulsion as washing media has been Introduced. Suitable microemulsion have to be used in order to have the chance of refilling the soil after decontamination and to avoid any risk due to toxicity. The purpose of this research is to evaluate effect of microemulsion to remediation of contaminated soil. We performed test with various organic contaminants like Pyrene and BTEX, also compared efficiency of remediation in microemulsion process with soil washing

  • In this research, the effects of the concrete superplastizers on the wettability of cement particle and concrete strength were studied. The wettability of the cement particles strongly depended on the type of the superplastizer. When the superplastizer had a higher wettability with the cement particles, it revealed a good fluidity of the concrete mortar and a higher concrete strength. Non-ionic superplastizers (polycarboxylic type) had a relatively good performance on the mortar fluidity and concrete strength properties compared to anionic superplastizers (lignosulfate, sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde, sulfonated melamin formaldehyde). It was observed that the blending of the polycarboxylic and the lignosulfate type concrete superplastizers resulted in synergistic effects on the concrete mortar fluidity and concrete strength properties.

  • Atmospheric fine particles $(PM_{2.5})$ were collected at the background sites, Kangwha, Taean, and Kosan and characterized to understand their behaviors at the sites. Daily samples of $PM_{2.5}$ mass were measured and ionic species, carbonaceous species, and gaseous species were analyzed. Four-day backward trajectory analysis was also carried out. The mean concentrations of anthropogenic species were highest at Kangwha among three sites, while contributions from sea salts wree highest at Taean during the measurement period due to higher wind speed at Taean. Major chemical components in fine particles were sulfate, organic carbon, nitrate, and ammoniu. Most of the non-sea-salt (nss) sulfates in $PM_{2.5}$ might be present as ammonium sulfates at these sites. Most air parcels arriving at Kangwha and Taean were from northern China. Therefore, both sites were thought to be affected by the same air parcel. At Kosan, during the measurement period, air parcels were from either northern China or sourthern China. The nss sulfate concentration in the air parcels from southern China was higher, while the nss calcium, nitrate, and ammonium concentrations were higher when the air parcels were from northern China.

  • To develop a home-version assay system for plasma lipoprotein cholesterol, variables that can control the assay performance were optimized. The system was constructcd by using two major components: nitrocellulose membrane strip with immobilized enzymes (cholesterol esterase, cholesterol oxidase, and horseradish peroxidase); and sample carrier solution containing non-ionic detergent (Triton X-100) and chromogen (3,3'-diaminobenzidine). Once a sample combined with the carrier was absorbed from the bottom of the strip, cholesterol was delivered by capillary action to the immobilized enzymes and a sequential reactions took place. In the final reaction, the chromogen was oxidized and then generated a color as signal that was proportional to the concentration of cholesterol. The signal intensity was enhanced by optimizing conditions for the immobilization of enzymes and the chemical composition of carriel. Under these conditions, a dose-response curve was obtained and revealed a high sensitivity enough to measure the cholesterol in blood.

  • Interest and demand for hydrogen sensors are increasing in the field of H2 leakage detection during storage/transport/use and detection of H2 dissolved in transformer oil for safety issues as well as in the field of breath analysis for non-invasively diagnosing a number of disease states for a healthy life. In this study, various ZnO-based sensors were synthesized by controlling the reduction in crystallite size, decoration of Pt nanoparticles, doping of electron donating atoms, and doping of various atoms with different ionic radii. The sensing response of the various prepared ZnO-based nanoparticles and quantum dots (QDs) for 10 ppm H2 was investigated. Among the samples, the smallest-sized (3.5 nm) In3+-doped ZnO QDs showed the best sensing response, which is superior to those in previously reported hydrogen sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides. The higher sensing response of In-doped ZnO QDs is attributed to the synergic effects of the increased number of oxygen vacancies, higher optical band gap, and larger specific surface area.
