Rhodamine B Hydrazide as a novel fluorescent and colorimetric probe exhibiting remarkably selective fluorescence enhancement toward Hg2+ ion over other 16 metal ions is herein introduced. The probe reacts with Hg2+ ion followed by its spirolactam ring-opening to give a remarkable enhancement of absorption maximum at 550 nm as well as an enhanced fluorescence intensity at 580 nm in aqueous media. Upon titration with Hg2+ ion in various concentration of 10~200 uM, we found that the probe shows a marked color change from colorless to pink, enabling naked-eye detection toward mercury ion. In addition, in the presence of Hg2+ ion, the probe gave rise to change from non-florescence to strong orange fluorescence (Off-On) with a good linearity of R2=0.97. This preliminary results demonstrate that the fluorescent chemosensor we herein introduced can open a new strategy for marked selective and sensitive detection of mercury ions in contaminated soil containing various metal ions.

Spectroscopic observations commonly use a slit or fiber; however, non-slit spectroscopy enables us to observe a larger number of targets in one frame of image. Hence, it has been adopted as an observational mode for observatories like HST and JWST. Slitless spectroscopy requires wavelength calibration solutions in order to distinguish and measure the absorption / emission lines from the spectra with high accuracy. We installed the Volume Phase Holographic (VPH) grating to SQUEAN camera on the McDonald 2.1m telescope and obtained images with spectral resolutions of ~ 100 and 200. In order to derive the wavelength calibration, we measured the distances between the 0th order images and spectral features of various quasars. The distances are converted to wavelengths using the known wavelengths of the emission lines. We tested several different methods of spectral extraction and peak estimation of emission lines. We will present the results for the wavelength calibration and suggest the reliable methods to find the solution.

It is well knowns that based on the CSP (Common Spatial Pattern) algorithm, the linear projection of an EEG (Electroencephalography) signal can be made to spaces that optimize the discriminant between two patterns. Sharing disadvantages from linear time invariant systems, CSP suffers from the non-stationary nature of EEGs causing the performance of the classification in a BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) system to drop significantly when comparing the training data and test data. The author has suggested a simple idea based on the parallel model of CSP filters to improve the performance of BCI systems. The model was tested with a simple CSP algorithm (without any elaborate regularizing methods) and a perceptron learning algorithm as a classifier to determine the improvement of the system. The simulation showed that the parallel model could improve classification performance by over 10% compared to conventional CSP methods.
Boron exists in dilute concentrations in sea water, ground water and waste waters. Reactive liquid extraction can be used for removing boron to make the treated water suitable for drinking and irrigation, with its final concentration less than 0.5 ppm. The results of equilibrium experiments are reported on the removal of boron using 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1, 3-propanediol (BEPD as a nonionic carrier) in sunflower oil, a non-traditional solvent. The results of removal of boron from aqueous solutions in the concentration range 0.5-20 ppm are presented. It is shown that this new liquid membrane system, is able to remove boron from ground waters at their natural pH of 6-8 (without any chemical addition for pH adjustments). The removal efficiency is good when the process is upgraded to a hollow-fibre membrane contactor and approximately 45% boron can be removed in a single-stage contact. There are additional advantages of this new approach that includes reduced operational health and safety and environmental issues. The results reported here provide guidelines to the development of boron removal process using renewable, biodegradable, safe and cheap solvent system such as sunflower oil.
Under driving condition, A vehicle experiences various kinds of loads, which brings on the buckling and fracture of suspension systems. Lower control arm (LCA), which consists of 2 bush joints and 1 ball joint connection, is the one of the most important parts in the suspension system. The bush joints absorb the impact load and reduce the vibration from the road. When analyzing the LCA behavior, it is important to understand the material properties and boundary conditions of bushing systems correctly, because of the nonlinearity characteristics of the rubber. In this paper, in order to predict the large scale deformation of the LCA more precisely, three factors are newly suggested, that is, coupling of bush stiffness between translation and rotation, bush extraction force and maximum rotation angle of ball joint. LCA stiffness is estimated by CAE and component test. Analysis and test results are almost same and the validity of considering three factors in LCA analysis is verified.

An important technical issue in recent software development is to make needed software by the composition of components that are assemblable, and configurable, and independently extracted. The main advantage of component-based software development is reducing development time and cost. It is more cost-effective in development time to use components that are already developed than developing from scratch. There are two ways of component-based software development: one is to compose self-developed components, and the other is to by the components developed by third-parties and compose them. In the second case, existing non component programs must can be used for reuse in the component development. In this paper, we approach two methods for increase of reusability of Java program. First, we suggest the technique of extracting the elements suitable for the Beans component model from Java program, and then we show a process and a guideline of converting the extract elements into the Beans component model. Second, we suggest a technique of automatically extracting component information from the Java Beans component, expressing them in XML, its is possible to reuse the efficient component environment.
Recommender systems are popular applications that help users to identify items that they could be interested in. A recent research area on recommender systems focuses on detecting several kinds of inconsistencies associated with the user preferences. However, the majority of previous works in this direction just process anomalies that are intentionally introduced by users. In contrast, this paper is centered on finding the way to remove non-malicious anomalies, specifically in collaborative filtering systems. A review of the state-of-the-art in this field shows that no previous work has been carried out for recommendation systems and general data mining scenarios, to exactly perform this preprocessing task. More specifically, in this paper we propose a method that is based on the extraction of knowledge from the dataset in the form of rating regularities (similar to frequent patterns), and their use in order to remove anomalous preferences provided by users. Experiments show that the application of the procedure as a preprocessing step improves the performance of a data-mining task associated with the recommendation and also effectively detects the anomalous preferences.
Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely recognized as environmentally benign solvents. Their unique properties, including negligible vapor pressure, non-flammability, a wide liquid range and their tunable physicochemical properties by proper selection of cations and anions, make them attractive green solvents in a variety of fields such as organic synthesis/catalysis, extraction/ separation, and electrochemistry, amongst others. In this paper, the recent technological developments and their prospects in the application of ILs in microbiology and biochemical engineering, including enzymatic reactions, protein folding/refolding and biomass dissolution, are discussed.
New methods to register multiple hemispheric slices of the postmortem brain to anatomically corresponding in-vivo MRI slices within a 3D volumetric MRI are presented. Gel-embedding and fiducial markers are used to reduce geometrical distortions in the postmortem brain volume. The registration algorithm relies on a recursive extraction of warped MRI slices from the reference MRI volume using a modified non-linear polynomial transformation until matching slices are found. Eight different voxel similarity measures are tested to get the best co-registration cost and the results show that combination of two different similarity measures shows the best performance. After validating the implementation and approach through simulation studies, the presented methods are applied to real data. The results demonstrate the feasibility and practicability of the presented coregistration methods, thus providing a means of MR signal analysis and histological examination of tissue lesions via coregistered images of postmortem brain slices and their corresponding MRI sections. With this approach, it is possible to investigate the pathology of a disease through both routinely acquired MRls and postmortem brain slices, thus improving the understanding of the pathological substrates and their progression.
This paper presents an approach to detect premature ventricular contractions(PVC) using the neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions(NEWFM), NEWFM classifies normal and PVC beats by the trained weighted fuzzy membership functions using wavelet transformed coefficients extracted from the MIT-BIH PVC database. The eight most important coefficients of d3 and d4 are selected by the non-overlap area distribution measurement method. The selected 8 coefficients are used for 3 data sets showing reliable accuracy rates 99,80%, 99,21%, and 98.78%, respectively, which means the selected input features are less dependent to the data sets. The ECG signal segments and fuzzy membership functions of the 8 coefficients enable input features to interpret explicitly.
