  • The structure of a non-axisymmetric propane diffusion flame was investigated. Tomographic reconstruction method to convert the line-integrated self-emission data of a fuel-rich diffusion flame with square cross-section was applied to get the spatially reconstructed emission data. Modified Shepp-Logan filter and concentric squares raster were chosen for reconstructing arbitrarily shaped object in this process. Spatially reconstructed emission data were then interpreted to several physical quantities, such as flame edge, FWHM, perimeter and 3-D flame temperature distribution. Necessary assumptions were discussed and the results were interpreted. In comparison with axisymmetric flame, flame edge was developed higher, and sooting region of upstream was broader than in this non-axisymmetric one. At some height, the flame was shrunk very rapidly and finally formed circular cross-section.

  • For free vibration of non-symmetric thin-walled circular arches including restrained warping effect, the elastic strain and kinetic energy is derived by introducing displacement fields of circular arches in which all displacement parameters are defined at the centroid axis. The cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions for development of the curved thin-walled beam element having eight degrees of freedom. Analytical solution for in-plane free vibration behaviors of simply supported thin-walled curved beams with monosymmetric cross-sections is newly derived. Also, a finite element formulation using two noded curved beams element is presented by evaluating elastic stiffness and mass matrices. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this study, analytical and numerical solutions for free vibration of circular arches are presented and compared with solutions analyzed by the straight beam element and the ABAQUS's shell element.

  • Numerical methods are developed for solving the buckling loads and the elastica of clamped- free columns of circular cross-section with constant volume. The column model is based rut the Timoshenko beam theory. The Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods, respectively, are used to solve the governing differential equations and to compute the eigenvalues. Extensive numerical results, including buckling loads, elastica of buckled shapes and effects of shear de-formation, are presented in non-dimensional form for elastic columns whose radius of circular cross-section varies both linearly and parabolically with column length.

  • The present paper is focused on analyzing the delamination of inhomogeneous multilayered rods of circular cross-section loaded in torsion. The rods are made of concentric longitudinal layers of individual thickness and material properties. A delamination crack is located arbitrary between layers. Thus, the internal and external crack arms have circular and ring-shaped cross-sections, respectively. The layers exhibit continuous material inhomogeneity in radial direction. Besides, the material has non-linear elastic behavior. The delamination is analyzed in terms of the strain energy release rate. General solution to the strain energy release rate is derived by considering the energy balance. The solution is applied to analyze the delamination of cantilever rod. For verification, the strain energy release rate is derived also by considering the complementary strain energy.

  • The conventional non-dig underground structure building method which made an appearance to reduce the social and environmental costs and maximize the efficiency of the social overhead capital facilities could not help being uneconomical because of many problems such as unnecessary excessive excavation, water leakage, obstacle interference, difficulty of curvilinear application and connection complexity between propelled and injected bodies due to indiscriminate application of small and large circular steel pipes without consideration of the site conditions. The T.S.T.M, in which a protruded square tube is applied as a propulsion and injection body in a design that considered site conditions such as ground condition, depth of soil and live load, was able to be economical as it solved the problems of water resistance, minimization of obstacle interference and curvilinearity, and we can see that it can be applied to all grounds by utilizing or complementing the target ground in terms of engineering. Also in configuring the transverse section, it is possible to not only secure excellent structural safety but also implement all of the above engineering characteristics not only in the square cross section but also in the arch cross section, so it was possible to build structures on any section or ground, and we could confirm the LCC reduction effect and the VE effect.

  • In this work, thermo-elastic stability behavior of laminated cross-ply elliptical cylindrical shells subjected to uniform temperature rise is studied employing the finite element approach based on higher-order theory that accounts for the transverse shear and transverse normal deformations, and nonlinear in-plane displacement approximations through the thickness with slope discontinuity at the layer interfaces. The combined influence of higher-order shear deformation, shell geometry and non-circularity on the prebuckling thermal stress distribution and critical temperature parameter of laminated elliptical cylindrical shells is examined.

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of non-circular arches with non-uniform cross-section, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are derived and solved numerically to obtain frequencies. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated for the prime parabolic arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. Three general taper types for rectangular section are considered. A wide range of arch rise to span length ratios, slenderness ratios, and section ratios are considered. The agreement with results determined by means of a finite element method is good from an engineering viewpoint.

  • For the successful design of nuclear reactor, it is very important to investigate thermal-hydraulic characteristics of fuel rod bundle. Fluid flow and heat transfer in the non-circular cross-section of nuclear fuel rod bundle are different from those found in common circular tube. And complex three dimensional flow including secondary and vortex flow, is formed around the bundles. The purpose of this research is to examine how geometries and flow conditions affect heat transfer in fuel rod bundle. Design data for nuclear fuel rod bundle and structure are surveyed, and $3{\times}3$ sub-channel model is adopted in this study. Computational results are compared with the heat transfer data measured by naphthalene sublimation method, and numerical analysis and evaluation are performed at various design conditions and flow conditions.

  • The differential equations governing the free vibrations of stepped horizontally circular curved beams with circular cross-section are derived and solved numerically. In numerical method, the Runge-Kutta and Determinant Search methods are used for computing the natural frequencies and mode shapes. Frequencies and mode shapes are reported as the functions of non-dimensional system parameters. The numerical method developed herein for computing frequencies and mode shapes are efficient and reliable.

  • This paper focuses on large deflection static behavior of edge cracked simple supported beams subjected to a non-follower transversal point load at the midpoint of the beam by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. The cross section of the beam is circular. The cracked beam is modeled as an assembly of two sub-beams connected through a massless elastic rotational spring. It is known that large deflection problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. The considered highly nonlinear problem is solved considering full geometric non-linearity by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. There is no restriction on the magnitudes of deflections and rotations in contradistinction to von-Karman strain displacement relations of the beam. The beams considered in numerical examples are made of Aluminum. In the study, the effects of the location of crack and the depth of the crack on the non-linear static response of the beam are investigated in detail. The relationships between deflections, end rotational angles, end constraint forces, deflection configuration, Cauchy stresses of the edge-cracked beams and load rising are illustrated in detail in nonlinear case. Also, the difference between the geometrically linear and nonlinear analysis of edge-cracked beam is investigated in detail.
