  • In the present study, the materials, sizes, and designs of blind eye patch products of skin-adhesive type and glass-attachment type currently available in the market will be analyzed and ergonomically appropriate blind eye patches will be developed. Although these skin-adhesive type eye patches were easy to use, they had shortcomings such as skin troubles due to the adhesive used on the weak and sensitive skin of children and the fact that eyebrows are pulled out and the skin is irritated when the eye patches are detached after being attached. The non-adhesive type eye patches were blind patches to be worn by putting into glasses. These products were made using diverse materials such as neoprene, non-woven fabrics, and felt and showed differences in tactile impressions and irritation to the skin depending on material characteristics. In addition, most products were efficient in blocking light with three-dimensional oval designs comprising darts. In the present study, blind eye patches were designed to reduce skin troubles by using sweat-absorbing and quick-drying functional materials with soft tactile impressions. In addition, to increase the effect to block light and the degree of tight contact with the skin when the blind eye patches are worn compared to existing eye patch designs, the sides of the wings of the blind eye patches were widened, glass frame fixing plates were added, and the darts were made to be curved thereby making an ergonomic design reflecting the shape of the face. The non-adhesive type blind eye patches developed in the present study are considered to enhance the wearing sensation with the use of the material without skin irritation but with cushioning feelings and the ergonomic design reflecting the contour of the face.

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the treatment effect of PEG soln which is a common dimensional stabilizer to green log. sawing panel etc, on bonding product including plywood widely-used in secondary processing unit. The 30% concentration of aqueous PEG soln. with molecular weight of 400, 1.000 and 4,000 were prepared respectively, and also dipping the veneer in the PEG soln. spreading the PEG soln. on veneer and mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive were allowed. Then the ratio of PEG impregnation on veneer, the adhesive strength of plywood were epitomized as follows: The ratio of impregnation by PEG 4,000 at dipping condition was highest. while that by PEG 400 at same condition was lowest. However, the effect of PEG molecular weight on the ratio of impregnation at spreading condition did not occur. 2. The adhesive strength was great in the order of 4,000>400>1,000 in molecular weight of PEG at dipping and spreading conditions. In case of mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive, the adhesive strength was great in the order of 400>1,000>4,000 in molecular weight of PEG. Throughout three treatment conditions, PEG 400 was relatively favourable with about 10kg/$cm^2$ dry strength. 3. The adhesive strength was great 10 the order of spreading >dipping >mixing condition. 4. Although adhesive strength with the 30% concentration of aqueous PEG soln. was decreased by 35% and over, compared to control (non-treatment) adhesive strength, all types of PEG treatment except mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive exceeded the standard dry strength for common use panel. 7.5kg/$cm^2$. 5. In warm water-proof test, the adhesive strengths by all PEG treatment conditions were less than the standard wet strength, 7.5kg cot, and also delamination of glue line occured mostly in mixing in the PEG soln. in the adhesive condition.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the curing and adhesive behavior of asphalt emulsions including polymer-modified emulsions for chip seals and fog seals. METHODS : For the laboratory testing, the evaporation test, the bitumen bond strength (BBS) test, and the Vialit test are used. Also, the rolling ball test and the damping test are employed to evaluate the curing properties of the fog seal emulsions. In order to conduct all the tests in controled condition, all test procedures are performed in the environmental chamber. The CRS-2L and the SBS CRS-2P emulsions are used as a polymer-modified emulsion, and then unmodified emulsion, the CRS-2, is compared for the evaluation of chip seal performance. For the fog seal performance evaluation, two types of polymer-modified emulsions (FPME-1 and FPME-2) and one of unmodified emulsion, the CSS-1H, are employed. All the tests are performed at different curing times and temperatures. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Overall, PMEs show better curing and adhesive behavior than non-PMEs regardless of treatments types. Especially, the curing and adhesive behavior of PMEs is much better than non-PMEs before 120 minutes of curing time. Since all the test results indicate that after 120 minutes of curing time the curing adhesive behavior of emulsions, the early curing time, i.e., 120 minutes, plays an important role in the performance of chip seals and fog seals.

  • As a part of abating the formaldehyde emission of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesive by lowering formaldehyde to urea (F/U) mole ratio, this study was conducted to investigate properties of UF resin adhesive with different F/U mole ratios. UF resin adhesives were synthesized at different F/U mole ratios of 1.6, 1.4, 1.2, and 1.0. Properties of UF resin adhesives measured were non-volatile solids content, pH level, viscosity, water tolerance, specific gravity, gel time and free formaldehyde content. In addition, a linear relationship between non-volatile solids content and sucrose concentration measured by a refractometer was established for a faster determination of the non-volatile solids content of UF resin. As F/U mole ratio was lowered, non-volatile solids content, pH, specific gravity, water tolerance, and gel time increased while free formaldehyde content and viscosity were decreased. These results suggested that the amount of free formaldehyde strongly affected the reactivity of UF resin. Lowering F/U mole ratio of UF resin as a way of abating formaldehyde emission consequently requires improving its reactivity.

  • An experiment, aimed at finding out the adhesive condition when adhesive non-woven fabrics for padding cloths are used for padding cloths of blouse, has been conducted. Materials used were three different kinds-scoured, sanforized, and permanent pressed- of combined fabrics of polyester and cotton. As for padding cloth material, mixed spinning nonwoven fabrics of polyster and viscose rayon have been used. Adhesive conditions were made each at $120^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$, respectively, and adhesive time has been limited to 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 seconds each. External appearance as well as quality have been watched through washing experiment. In case of 12$0^{\circ}C$, all experimental materials were separated at the seventh washing and as for $140^{\circ}C$, all but the material which has been attached on scoured cloth for 40 seconds were separated. In case of 20 seconds only permanent pressed cloth and sanforized cloth were separated. At 30 and 40 seconds, the adhesive conditions have been maintained up to the seventh washing. In case of 5 seconds $180^{\circ}C$it was not turned yellow, but all were separated. In case of 10, 20, 30 and 40 seconds, at above temperature all were turned yellow in the adhesive process. Therefore, the adhesive power could be said strong enough, though it was not very practical. In this experiment, the lower the temperature of iron is, the longer time it has to be touched. At higher temperature however, relatively short time makesn it possible for adhesion and depending upon the finishing methode of cloth, there is slight difference in adhesive power. As a result, the best adhesive condition for all experimental materials is $160^{\circ}C$of iron temperature, and the time of adhesion is between 30 and 40 seconds.
