In this study, fluorescence hyperspectral imaging (FHSI) was used for the rapid, non-destructive detection of fake, manmade eggs from real eggs. To identify fake eggs, protoporphyrin IX (PpIX)-a natural pigment present in real eggshells-was utilized as the main indicator due to its strong fluorescence emission effect. The fluorescence images of real and fake eggs were acquired using a line-scan-based FHSI system, and their fluorescence features were analyzed based on spectroscopic techniques. To improve the detection performance and accuracy, an optimal waveband combination was investigated with analysis of variance (ANOVA), and its fluorescence ratio images (588/645 nm) were created for visualization of the real eggs between two different egg groups. In addition, real and fake eggs were scanned using a one-waveband (645 nm) handheld fluorescence imager that can perform real-time scanning for on-site applications. Then, the results of the two methods were compared with one another. The outcome clearly shows that the newly developed FHSI system and the fluorescence handheld imager were both able to distinguish real eggs from fake eggs. Consequently, FHSI showed a better performance (clearer images) compared to the fluorescence handheld imager, and the outcome provided valuable information about the feasibility of using FHSI imaging with ANOVA for the discrimination of real and fake eggs.
Residual stress is generated in the structures as a result of irregular elastic-plastic deformation during fabrication processes such as welding, heat treatment, and mechanical processing. There are several factors attributed to the origin of residual stresses, tensile or compressive. The stresses can be determined by destructive ways or nondestructive ways using X-ray or neutron diffraction. Although X-ray diffraction is a well established technique, it is practically limited to near-surface stresses. Neutrons penetrate easily into most materials and neutron diffraction permits non-destructive evaluation of lattice strain within the bulk of large specimens because the radiation is more deeply penetrating for metallic engineering components. This paper presented application of neutron diffraction technique to the residual stress measurement using 20 mm thick welded stainless steel plate($100{\times}100 \textrm{mm}^2$)

The relationship between the EFBH (Equivalent Flat-Bottom Hole) size measured by non-destructive method and the actual size by destructive method in many rotors manufactured at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd. was investigated. In this investigation. "the Master Curve" compensating the differences between UT reported sizes and actual sizes of defects in our rotor forgings were obtainable. The applicability of this "Master Curve" as a way of calculating the actual defect size was also investigated. For the evaluation of rotor forgings, it is expected that this "Master Curve" may be used to determine the accurate actual sizes of defects.
For the structural integrity of large and complex structures such as railway vehicle, the in-field diagnosis of mechanical properties of the structures is needed, and especially, the mechanical characteristics of the weldment must be carefully evaluated. But, conventional standard testing methods having destructive procedures are not applicable to in-field assessment of mechanical property variations within weldment because they needs the limitations of specimen size and geometry. In this paper, to overcome this problems, the advanced indentation technique (AIS) is introduced for simple and non-destructive/in-field testing of weldment of industrial structures. This test measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation and fracture. First of all, flow properties such as yield strength, tensile strength and work hardening index can be evaluated through the analysis of the deformation behavior beneath the spherical indenter. Additionally, case studies of advanced indentation techniques are introduced.

To evaluate rock bolt integrity, destructive test such as pull-out test has been commonly carried out. This method is known as time consuming, expensive, and inaccurate procedure. To improve destructive method, non-destructive techniques using transmitted guided ultrasonic waves were suggested. Note for the transmission method, the source for the generation of ultrasonic waves should be installed during the rock bolt construction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reflection method using reflected guided ultrasonic waves to evaluate the integrity of the rock bolt grouted, and to compare the results evaluated by the reflection and transmission methods. The guided waves are generated by PZT element and received by AE sensor. The measured signals are analyzed by the wavelet transform. The results show that the energy velocities of guided ultrasonic waves increase with the defect ratio in both transmission and reflection method. The reflection method produces the lower velocity in all defect ratio. This research demonstrates that the reflection method may be suitable and easer method for the field tests.
The present study was conducted to develop the automatic analytical method for determining moisture, nicotine, reducing sugar and total nitrogen contents and color(L, a, b) value in domestic tobacco leaves using near infrared(NIR) spectroscopy. The results of multiple linear regression analysis between chemical and NIR data showed that NIR spectro-scopy can determine those quality components of tobacco samples in 30 seconds, non-destructively. The results using developed calibrations are summarized as follows; The standard error of prediction(SEP) for moisture, nicotine. total nitrogen, reducing sugar contents and color(L, a, b) value in domestic tobacco leaves was 0.28%, 0.25%, 0.07%, 0.75%, 1.25, 0.44 and 1.07, respectively. In addition, The possibility of developing the cheaper filter type NIR instrument, for quality evaluation in the procurement from leaf tobacco cultivators and process control was investigated.

As soil nails support a ground by the friction between nails and soils being reinforced, the length of soil nails is important factor for a ground stability. Thus, the soil nail length has to be accurately evaluated in order to secure a ground stability. The goal of this study is to suggest the applicability of the non-destructive method as the basic research for the evaluation of the soil nail length. First, the elastic and electromagnetic waves are adopted to select an applicable method for the soil nails connected by the coupler. Test results show that while the ultrasonic waves are not detected due to the coupler, the electromagnetic waves are free for the influence of the coupler. Second, electromagnetic waves are measured for combined soil nails with the length of 1 m~15 m for the investigation of the characteristics of electromagnetic waves. The travel time of the electromagnetic wave increases with an increase in the soil nail length. In addition, the ground cable is used to apply the electromagnetic waves to pre-installed soil nails. Test results show that the travel time of the electromagnetic wave by using the ground cable increases with an increase in soil nail length. This study demonstrates that the electromagnetic wave may be a promising method for the evaluation of the soil nail length.
In non-destructive evaluation of free acid content in apples by near- infrared spectroscopy(NIRS), browning and heat treatment of squeezed apple juice affected to the accuracy but titrable alkali concentration did not. The free acid content in apples after harvest was able to determine using different apples in harvest time for calibration making. The result of MLR, multiple correlation coefficient(R) was 0.77 and standard error of prediction(SEP) was 0.03%. The free acid content in apples during storage was able to determine using calibration equation established with stored apples, R was 0.90 and SEP was ca. 0.04%. The prediction accuracy by LAIR was not sufficient for use of quantitative analysis of free acid content in apple, but classification of law and high level in acid content was supposed to be applicable.

This study proposed a new non-destructive evaluation method for concrete bridge deck deterioration using ground penetrating radar (GPR). To calculate dielectric constant of the concrete bridge deck, an extended common mid-point (XCMP) method was developed for a two-layered structure using an air-coupled GPR antenna setup. The deterioration conditions of the concrete bridge deck such as deterioration depth was evaluated based on the dielectric constant and surface-to-average dielectric constant ratio of the concrete bridge deck. A GPR field test was conducted on an old concrete bridge with asphalt concrete surfacing to validate the new evaluation method. The test results showed that the newly proposed method estimated pavement thickness and deterioration depth of the concrete deck in a reasonable level.
In this study, we developed a phosphor film screen that can be applied to radiographs during non-destructive testing using Gd2O2S:Tb phosphor compounds. The image uniformity of the fabricated phosphor screen film was analyzed by FE-SEM, RMS and RDS analysis. In addition, the tensile strength, elongation, and modulus of elasticity of the Gd2O2S:Tb phosphor screen were evaluated by measuring the stress-strain characteristic curve. As a result, it was evaluated that the RSD value had an excellent image uniformity within 10% of the evaluation criteria. In addition, as a result of evaluation of physical properties, the tensile strength was 1.1760 N/㎟, the tensile strength at break was 1.1515 N/㎟. These results suggest that the Gd2O2S:Tb phosphor screen fabricated using the room temperature gel-printing method could be applied to digital radiography detectors for radiography.
