  • This paper presents a result of performance evaluation fur non-contact scanning probe microscopy with respect to the vibration characteristics of cantilevers with tips. One of the current issues of the scanning probe microscopy technology is to increase the measurement speed, which is closely tied with the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. The primary concern in this research is to investigate the relation between the maximum possible speed of non-contact scanning probe microscopy and the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. First, the finite element analysis is made fur the vibration characteristics of various cantilevers in use. The computed natural frequencies of the cantilevers are in good agreement with measured ones. Then, each cantilever is tested with topographic measurement for a standard sample with the scanning speed changed. The performances of cantilevers are analyzed along with the natural frequencies of cantilevers. Experiments are also performed to test the effects of how to attach cantilevers in the piezo-electric actuator. Finally, measurement sensitivity has been analyzed to enhance the performance of scanning probe microscopy.

  • In this paper, forward Zero Voltage Switching Multi Resonant Converter(ZVS MRC) for non-contact charging energy transmission is reposed. The forward ZVS MRC is effective in adsorbing parasitic element as well as minimizing the switching loss. That can accommodate very high frequency. So forward ZVC MRC is applied to non-contact charging energy transmission. Used converter has saperatable transformer and synchronous rectifiers. Coupling coefficient(k), leakage inductance, coupling inductance and resonant frequency are observed for the air gap. By using the observed value, this circuit is designed and implemented. This proposed circuit is simulated by the PSPICE and experimented. The voltage stress of a main switch and the output power of the converter are measured. This paper show that is compatible for non-contact charging energy transmission.

  • This study has investigated the 3-D deflection characteristics of a flexible plate levitated by non-contact grippers using SPIV method. The measuring instrument consisted of a flexible plate located under four non-contact grippers and two cameras at the bottom of a transparent acrylic plate. Measurements were made on two materials (PVC and PC) for the plate with 50×50 cm2 area and 1 mm thickness. The deflection characteristics and flatness vary depending on the plate material, the gripper position and the air flow supplied to the gripper. For the material of PVC, the overall defection is convex. As the gripper position goes outward from the plate center, the upmost bending point also moves to the outside of the plate with the flatness increasing. However, the air flow rate does not affect the deflection pattern except for the small increase of flatness. For the material of PC, the shape of deflection changes from convex to concave as the gripper position goes out. The flatness is the highest at the point of transition from convex to concave, but the air flowrate has little effect on the flatness.

  • This study was performed to investigate the influence of lateral guidance pattern and chewing pattern on masticatory muscle activity and occlusal contact pattern. Twenty-five patients with temporomandibular disorders and thirty students without temporomandibular disorders were selected for this study. Electromyographic examination and occlusal contact examination were performed simultaneously with Bio-Pak System (Bioresearch Inc.,U.S.A.) and T-Scan System(Tekscan Co., USA). The obtained results were as follows : 1. The EMG activity of masseter and anterior temporal muscle in patient group with canine guidance was higher than with non-canine guidance. but there was no significant difference (p>0.05). 2. The EMG activity of anterior temporal muscle in normal group with non-canine guidance was higher at preferred chewing side than at opposite side (p<0.05). 3. The EMG activity of masseter muscle was higher in normal group than in patient group (p<0.05). 4. The number of occlusal contact in patient group with canine guidance was higher than with non-canine guidance, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05). 5. The occlusal contact force at preferred chewing side was higher in patient group than in normal group(p<0.05).

  • Assurance of the objectivity and reproducibility is a major key point in wrinkle measurement used for evaluating the degree of skin aging. The measurement of relief is quickly converted to a non-contact method, of which tools or instruments do not come in contact with skin directly, to minimize the artificial effects which influence the shape or depth of the relief. Here, we showed how wrinkle measurement techniques have been changed briefly and compared PRIMOS and replica method in the point of view of measurement principle and features, the former is non-contact fringe projection tool and the latter is contact type of the method.

  • Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare sight-threatening corneal infection, often reporting from contact lens wearers. An asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected Thai male without history of contact lens use complained foreign body sensation at his left eye during motorbike riding. He had neither specific keratitis symptoms nor common drugs responding, which contributed to delayed diagnosis. By corneal re-scraping, Acanthamoeba-like cysts were detected by calcofluor white staining and agar culture. The etiological agent obtained from the culture was molecularly confirmed by Acanthamoeba spp.-specific PCR, followed by DNA sequencing. The results from BLAST and phylogenetic analysis based on the DNA sequences, revealed that the pathogen was Acanthamoeba T4, the major genotype most frequently reported from clinical isolates. The infection was successfully treated with polyhexamethylene biguanide resulting in corneal scar. This appears the first reported AK case from a non-contact lens wearer with HIV infection in Thailand. Although AK is sporadic in developing countries, a role of free-living Acanthamoeba as an opportunistic pathogen should not be neglected. The report would increase awareness of AK, especially in the case presenting unspecific keratitis symptoms without clinical response to empirical antimicrobial therapy.

  • Disinfection of microorganisms using UV light is widely used in the field of water supply and wastewater treatment plant, In spite of high germicidal effect and relatively clean by-product, UV disinfection has fundamental defeat that is accumulation of fouling materials at the interface of water and lamp sleeve. Non-contact type of UV photoreactor which can avoid this fouling generation was developed and the experimental performance evaluation of the system was carried out in this study. Log inactivation rate of E. coli was selected as a disinfection index. The concentration of E. coli of second clarifier effluent was $8.2{\times}10^1-8.2{\times}10^3$ colony per mL and was well inactivated by the non-contact type of UV photoreactor. Under the UV intensity condition of $2.1-2.5mW/cm^2$, E. coli removal rate was observed in the range of 54 - 95% when the HRT was increased from 10 to 52 seconds. Experimental results showed that log inactivation of E. coli was proportional to UV dosage and $200mJ/cm^2$ of UV dose is expected for the 2.0 log inactivation of E. coli from the second clarifier effluent. Between the two parameters of UV intensity and contact time which are consist of UV dose, UV intensity was 4 times more effective than contact time.

  • There is a growing demand for non-contact current measurements for efficient use of electrical power and energy saving. In this study, I propose a non-contact current sensor using LC resonance by a resonance circuit composed of a sensor coil and 2 coupling coils for enabling a wireless measurement. The inductance of the sensor coil, which could be changed by applied current, causes the change of resonance frequency of the resonance circuit. A pair of magnet was attached to the ferrite core to apply a bias magnetic field that enabled the determination of the current direction. We obtained an output voltage change of 18 V with the current of -3~3 A. But, the output was nonlinear. In order to realize the non-contact current measuring method proposed in the present study, there is a need for a strict investigation of linearity and resolution for the future study.

  • MLCC is key parts of many electronic products and mixer is used to make MLCC. Currently, non-contact mixer is increasingly used due to its many merits. In case of large capacity non-contact mixer, function of driving gear is important. In this study, therefore, in order to reduce manufacturing cost through optimal design of driving gear of large capacity non-contact mixer, study on shape optimization of driving gear without excessive design modification was performed. As the results, because safety factors of modification model were decreased about 3.0 ~ 3.5 times compared with those of model with robust design, the possibility for saving manufacturing cost was confirmed.

  • These studies were carried out to develop non-contact thermometer to take easily the body temperature of domestic animals instead of taking rectal temperature. For the studies, 86 cattle, 57 horses, 72 pigs, 43 goats, and 42 dogs were used and body parts as neck, flank, axilla, lateral abdomen, gluteus, inguinal region, or jugular groove were chosen for taking temperature according to different species. Two types of commercial non-contact thermometers were used to take the temperature of certain body part and at the same time the rectal temperature using digital thermo-meter was taken to compare the difference of temperature between rectum and certain body part. The difference of mean temperature in cattle between rectum and axilla and flank were 0.52 and $2.41^{\circ}C$, respectively, using non-contact thermometer I, whereas $3.02^{\circ}C$ between rectum and flank using thermometer II. The difference of mean temperature in horses between rectum and axilla, gluteus, and jugular groove were 0.52, 1.49, and $0.26^{\circ}C$, respectively, using thermometer I, whereas 2.28 ane $0.92^{\circ}C$ between rectum and gluteus or jugular groove using thermometer II. The difference of mean temperature in swine between rectum and flank, inguinal region, and neck were 1.23, 0.21, and $0.8^{\circ}C$, respectively, using thermometer I, whereas 1.42, 0.711, and $1.25^{\circ}C$ using thermometer II The difference of mean temperature in goats between rectum and lateral abdomen and inguinal region were 1.02 and $0.12^{\circ}C$, respectively, using thermometer I, whereas 1.96 and $1.01^{\circ}C$ using thermometer II. The difference of mean temperature in dogs between rectum and lateral abdomen, inguinal region, and neck were 3.26, 0.24, and $2.37^{\circ}C$, respectively, using thermometer I, whereas 3.45, 0.56, and $2.61^{\circ}C$ using thermometer II.
