The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility on the detection of dental composite delamination using a lock-in thermography method. Amplitude and phase images of detected thermal signals were analyzed according to the lock-in frequencies. At a lock-in frequency of 0.05 Hz, the ligament thickness of 0.5 mm in the specimen exhibited the highest amplitude contrast between defective area and sound area. For ligament thicknesses of 1 mm and 1.5 mm, delamination detection was possible at 0.025 Hz and 0.01 Hz through the amplitude differences. At lock-in frequencies of 0.006 Hz and 0.01 Hz, ligament thickness 0.5 mm exhibited the highest phase contrast. For ligament thicknesses of 1 mm and 1.5 mm, the phase contrast exhibited possible detection of delamination at 0.006-0.1 Hz.
In this study, tests and finite element analyses were performed regarding compression after impact strength for laminated composite structures of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic widely used in structural materials. Two lay-up sequences of composite laminates were selected as test specimens and four impact energy conditions were applied respectively. Impact and compressive strength tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM standards. Impact damages in test specimens were analyzed by using non-destructive inspection method of C-Scan, and compression after impact strengths were calculated with compressive test results. Progressive failure analysis method that can progressively simulate damages and fractures of fiber/matrix/lamina/laminate level was used for impact and compressive strength analyses. All analysis results including contact force, deflection, impact damages, compressive strengths, etc. were compared to test results, and the validity of analysis method was verified.

Guided waves have shown a great potential for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. In contrast to traditional non-destructive testing (NDT) methodologies, a key element of SHM approaches is the high process of automation. The monitoring system should decide autonomously whether the host structure is intact or not. A basic requirement for the realization of such a system is that the sensors are permanently installed on the host structure. Thus, baseline measurements become available that can be used for diagnostic purposes, i.e., damage detection, localization, etc. This paper contributes to guided wave-based inspection in anisotropic materials for SHM purposes. Therefore, computational strategies are described for both, the solution of the complex equations for wave propagation analysis in composite materials based on exact elasticity theory and the popular global matrix method, as well as the underlying equations of two active damage localization algorithms for anisotropic structures. The result of the global matrix method is an angular and frequency dependent wave velocity characteristic that is used subsequently in the localization procedures. Numerical simulations and experimental investigations through time-delay measurements are carried out in order to validate the proposed theoretical model. An exemplary case study including the calculation of dispersion curves and damage localization is conducted on an exemplary unidirectional composite structure where the ultrasonic signals processed in the localization step are simulated with the spectral element method. The proposed study demonstrates the capabilities of the proposed algorithms for accurate damage localization in anisotropic structures.
We made a study of 3-D migration which could precisely image data of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) applied to NDT (Non-Destructive Test) field for the inspection of structural safety. In this study, we obtained 3-D migrated images of important targets in structuresurvey (e.g. steel pipes, cracks) by using 3-D Kirchhoff prestack depth migration scheme developed for seismic data processing. For a concrete model consisting of steel pipe and void, the targets have been well defined with opposite amplitude according to the parameters of the targets. And migrated images using Parallel-Broadside array (XX configuration) have shown higher resolution than those using Perpendicular-Broadside array (YY configuration) when steel pipes had different sizes. Therefore, it is required to analyze the migrated image of XX configuration as well as that of general YY configuration in order to get more accurate information. As the last stage, we chose a model including two steel pipes which cross each other. The upper pipe has been resolved clearly but the lower has been imaged bigger than the model size due to the high conductivity of the upper steel.
A steam generator (boiler) in thermal power plants, consisting of more than 30,000 parts and components, can lead to the plant shutdown with damage to even the small part of the components; esp., like weld failures on boiler tubes. Consequently it is greatly demanded to improve the quality of the weld on the boiler tube for the stable operation of the power plants. Because of the feature of the welding, which is done past by melting the work pieces and adding a filler material that cools to become a strong coalescence, there is a great possibility that weld failures take place. As a result, it is regulated to make a non-destructive testing, like radiography test, to detect defects and flaws in the weld. The current film radiography test provides a lower image quality exceeding 2.0% of a basic quality level for a penetrameter, it is very likely to fail to detect micro defect. As a result, the prevention for the boiler tube failure has not been made effectively. In this study, computed radiography technology has been applied as a digital radiography test to the boiler tube weld, and Se-75 radiation source was used to improve the image quality, instead of Ir-192 source. As a result of this study, it is proven to save the time and cost for test and to enhance the quality level of penetrameter penetrating image, which enables to upgrade the quality of radiography test to the boiler tube weld.
High temperature and pressure materials in power plant are degraded by creep damage, if they are exposed to constant loads for long times, which occurs in the load bearing structures of pressurized components operating at elevated temperatures. Many conventional measurement techniques such as replica method, electric resistance method, and hardness test method for measuring creep damage have been used. So far, the replica method is mainly used for the Inspection of High temperature and pressure components. This technique is, however, restricted to applications at the surface of the testpieces and cannot be used to material inside. In this paper, ultrasonic evaluation for the detection of creep damage in the form of cavaties on grain boundaries or integranular microcracks are carried out. And the absolute measuring method of quantitative ultrasonic velocity technique for Cr-Mo material degradation is analyzed. As a result of ultrasonic tests for crept specimens, we find that the sound velocity is decreased as the increase of creep life fraction$({\Phi}_c)$ and also, confirmed that hardness is decreased as the increase of creep life fraction$({\Phi}_c)$ but the coefficient of ultrasonic attenuation is increased as the increase of creep life fraction$({\Phi}_c)$. Finally based on the result in this paper, it can be recognized that the ultrasonic techniques using velocities and attenuation coefficient factor are very useful non-destructive methods to evaluate the degree of material degradation in fossile power plants.

There exist many types of pipe and component fatigue through vibrations, thermal fatigues or shifting. In some cases of thermal stratification/thermal fatigue, pipes & components are receiving thermal stress by means of material expansion and shrinkage by continuous thermal repetitive variation. Small cracks initially occur on the inside surface by thermal stress. These cracks grow in depth the pipe wall and finally come to a rupture. Pipe parts of susceptibility to thermal stratification and thermal fatigue are now being examined by conventional UT(ultrasonic test) as volumetric examination. It is difficult to fully satisfy the code & standards requirements because 3" weldolet weldments of RCS 16" pipe to 3" branch connection lines have complex structural shape. To solve the problems of conventional UT examination, we made a realistic mock-up and UT calibration block. We performed a simulation of phased array UT utilizing CIVA as NDE(Non-Destructive Examination) simulation software. Also we designed phased array UT transducer and wedge, optimal frequency by using simulation data. We performed phased array UT experiment through mock-up including artificial flaws(notch). The phased array UT technique is finally developed to improve the reliability of ultrasonic test at RCS 16" pipe to 3" branch connection weld.

Every object emits some energy from its surface. The emission energy forms surface heat distribution which we can capture by using an infrared thermal imager. The infrared thermal image may include valuable information regarding to the subsurface anomaly of the object. Since a thermal image reflects surface clutter and subsurface anomaly, we have difficulty in extracting the information on the subsurface anomaly only with thermal images taken under a wavelength. Thus, we use visible wavelength images of the object surface to remove exterior clutter. We, therefore in this paper, visualize the infrared image for overlaying it with a visible wavelength image. First, we make an interpolated image from two ordinary images taken from both sides of an infrared sensor. Next, we overlay the intermediate image with an infrared image taken from the infrared camera. The technique suggested in this paper can be utilized for analyzing the infrared images on non-destructive inspection against disaster and for safety.

Unlike other non-destructive inspection method, AE Structural defects that are likely to grow in the operation status can be detected, and the advantage of being due to the continuous monitoring of large structures has been widely used to evaluate the stability. AE sensor used to detect sound wave that occurs between 20kHz to 20MHz. and Sound wave result may vary depending on sensor's sensitivity. In this paper, Tensile test conducted on STS 304 and SS400, and tries to detect the crack signal. In tensile test, specimens were conducted using different sensor sensitivity to the same tensile test condition. The crack signal parameters divided into 4 types of communities by conducting cluster analysis. It was demonstrated that crack signal of two sensor is not different by statistical analysis of null hypotheses. Based on the results, waveform of this tension test is crack signal.
The three-year inspection of 20 tree stumps in the fire prevention area around the wooden building confirmed that termite colonies had been rapidly spread. In particular, four buildings among thirty one wooden buildings of Songgwang-sa temple were infected by the termite, indicating that the habitate of termite has been spread across the fire prevention area over the temple area. However, a non-destructive microwave diagnosis showed that internal damages have been progressed until now, suggesting a high risk to the building. These results suggest that the fire prevention area should be properly maintained to have harmful element controlled. Therefore, effective methods are required to eliminate tree stumps or wood materials used to establish fire prevention area near wooden buildings.
