  • The Electromagnetic Interference(EMI) generating from corona discharge of transformer area can interference the digital Instrument and Control(I&C) systems located nearby transformers. When the potential gradient of the electric field around the conductor is high enough to form a conductive region but not high enough to cause electrical breakdown to nearby objects, the EMI of corona discharge emits with the conducted and radiated noise and it interferences the signals of the I&C systems. Since digital I&C systems have an efficiency and competitive price, the analog I&C systems have been upgraded and displaced with the digital I&C systems but which have less EMI Immunity. There was no assessment to I&C systems by EMI generating corona discharge nearby transformers. When the safety-related I&C systems are installed in plants, the verification of equipment EMI should be done not in site-specific test but in test facilities. There are the need to do the site-specific EMI evaluation of corona discharge nearby transformers. This paper assesses the margin between plant emission limits and the highest composite plant emission of corona. When the non safety-related I&C systems are placed in transformer area, it suggests the appropriate radiated susceptibility level to EMI of corona discharge.

  • Providing a voice alarm to drivers approaching a work zone could be an effective alternative to mitigate the potential safety problems of the work zone. This study conceived a voice alarm with a direction sound speaker and a field test was conducted that evaluated the feasibility of the voice alarm at a highway work zone. During the field study, we carried out on-site driver surveys to obtain drivers' perception and preference, collected approaching speeds, and measured sound level during the off-peak 2-hour for two days, respectively. The results showed that while the voice alarm has the potential to be an effective tool in improving safety, the alternative appeared to have the negative effect of noise. Further refinement to a voice alarm with a directional speaker is required to improve feasibility, and the results are expected to be utilized as basic data useful for the refinement.

  • Since the detection probability is critically dependent on the target strength (TS) in active sonar and on the radiated noise level (RNL) in passive sonar, the acoustic materials for echo reduction (ER) and transmission loss (TL) are widely used for the stealth of underwater targets. In this paper, a measurement system based on the small water tank, for the frequency range of greater than 30 kHz, is developed and verified using reference targets. In order to design the water tank and the geometry of test samples, a program is developed to calculate the arrival time of interfering signals due to the reflection from water tank walls and also due to the diffraction from the edge of the test samples. Considering all the interfering signals, an optimal experimental configuration for water tank and test samples is designed and used throughout the experiment. Next, the signal processing algorithms to estimate ER and TL are developed based on the measured propagation loss reflecting the geometric spreading characteristics of the transducer. Finally, a set of reference targets such as aluminium plate and perfectly reflecting plate are used in a small water tank to verify the developed measurement system.

  • The M-algorithm for decoding convolutional codes can significantly reduce the complexity of the Viterbi algorithm by tracking a fixed number of survivor paths in each level of the decoding trellis. It is an easily-implementable algorithm suited for real-time processing of high-speed data. The algorithm, however, generates a sequence of catastrophic errors when the correct path is not included in the set of survivor paths. In this paper, the performance of the M-algorithm obtained from using various decoding complexity levels, frame lengths, and code constraint lengths is presented. The performance gain is quantified when the algorithm is used in conjunction with codes of increased constraint length. In particular, it is demonstrated the gain from the increased code free distance overcompensates the loss from the correct path being excluded from the survivors, when the frame length is short to moderate. Using 64 survivor paths, the signal-to-noise ratio gain obtained by increasing the constraint length from K=7 to K=9, 11, 15 is respectively 0.6, 0.75, and 08dB, when the frame of length L=100 has the frame error rate of 0.01%.

  • The foramen of Huschke (FH) or foramen tympanicum is a persistent bony defect connecting the external auditory canal (EAC) to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). It arises from an incomplete ossification of the tympanic part of the temporal bone that persists after the age of 5. If a herniation exists in the TMJ, otological symptoms may occur. An 80-year-old female patient complained of noise in her left TMJ and otorrhea in her left ear. On her cone beam computed tomography images, there were only degenerative joint disease signs on her left mandibular condyle. However, her computed tomography images revealed that the soft tissue of the TMJ herniate into the EAC. Additional examination was planned for the further evaluation. But the patient no longer visited the hospital due to her systemic health status, and symptoms disappeared spontaneously without any treatments. Usually this type of herniation is very rare, but years of mechanical stress from mastication may result in weakening and widening of the foramen with age. Therefore, although FH is usually congenital, sometimes it may be acquired in the elderly. The treatment plan should be determined in consideration of the patient's symptom level and the patient's general health status. If the clinical symptoms are not severe, no treatment is required.

  • This paper describes the design and development of a transmit receiver module(TRM) for mounting on X-band SAR of the NEXTSat-2. The TRM generates the chirp signal with required bandwidth through the DDS in X-band and performs frequency conversion, combination for the signal to transmit and be received and frequency synthesis. Tx path of the TRM produces signals of total 28 bandwidths up to 96.8 MHz and has output signal level of more than + 9.37 dBm. Rx path of the TRM has minimum noise figure of 15.7 dB. The measurement results show that required requirements are satisfied. The TRM is installed on the NEXTSat-2 flight model(FM), launched by KSLV-II(Nuri) on May 23, 2023 and currently operational.

  • A rapid, sensitive analytical method for glucuronolactone in beverages was developed and validated using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-ESI-MS/MS). To determine the optimum analytical conditions for glucuronolactone, three different kinds of HILIC columns and two mobile phases with different pH values were examined. An amide-bonded stationary phase with a pH 9 acetonitrile-rich mobile phase was the best condition in terms of column retention, ESI-MS/MS response area, and signal-to-noise ratio. After extraction, glucuronolactone was separated through the HILIC amide column and detected by negative ESI-MS/MS in selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode. Nine energy drinks sold in Korea were spiked with glucuronolactone at a concentration of 5 ng/mL; the Monster $Energy^{TM}$ sample showed the smallest peak area and its signal-to-noise ratio was used for method validation. Good linearity was obtained in the concentration range from 20 to 1500 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient > 0.998. The developed method had a limit of detection (LOD) of 6 ng/mL and a limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 20 ng/mL. The recovery of this method at concentration of 20, 100, 500, and 1000 ng/mL was 96.3%-99.2% with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 1.6%-14.0%. A reproducibility precision assessment at concentration of 100 and 500 ng/mL was carried out among three laboratories. The recovery of that evaluation was 95.1%-102.3% with RSD of 2.7%-7.0%. An analysis of variance indicated that there was no difference between the recovery results of the three laboratories at the 5% significance level. The validated method is applicable to inspecting beverages adulterated with glucuronolactone in Korea.

  • The methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorpha has been extensively studied as a model organism for methanol metabolism and peroxisome biogenesis. Recently, this yeast has also attracted attention as a promising host organism for recombinant protein production. Here, we describe the fabrication and evaluation of a DNA chip spotted with 382 open reading frames (ORFs) of H. polymorpha. Each ORF was PCR-amplified using gene-specific primer sets, of which the forward primers had 5'-aminolink. The PCR products were printed in duplicate onto the aldehyde-coated slide glasses to link only the coding strands to the surface of the slide via covalent coupling between amine and aldehyde groups. With the partial genome DNA chip, we compared efficiency of direct and indirect cDNA target labeling methods, and found that the indirect method, using fluorescent-labeled dendrimers, generated a higher hybridization signal-to-noise ratio than the direct method, using cDNA targets labeled by incorporation of fluorescence-labeled nucIeotides during reverse transcription. In addition, to assess the quality of this DNA chip, we analyzed the expression profiles of H. polymorpha cells grown on different carbon sources, such as glucose and methanol, and also those of cells treated with the superoxidegenerating drug, menadione. The profiles obtained showed a high-level induction of a set of ORFs involved in methanol metabolism and oxidative stress response in the presence of methanol and menadione, respectively. The results demonstrate the sensitivity and reliability of our arrays to analyze global gene expression changes of H. polymorpha under defined environmental conditions.

  • As the Concept "how environmental friendly" becomes more and more important in road construction. However, so far there is no estimation method. Environmental friendly concept can be incorporated at the plan level in order to influence decision making, and support policies that affect environment. The overall goal of this study was to develop environmental friendly concept measures for the national highway and to develop a methodology to implement a more environmental friendly concept. The research identified 8 performance measures through a project analysis that could address environmental impact assessment system's ten strategic goals - Topography, Wildlife, hydrology, landuse, air quality, water quality, soil, waste, noise, landscape. The qualitatively and quantitatively evaluation approach was selected as the decision support framework and performance measure were investigated using the AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) and pilot corridor for a 10 section and calculate the index values. The methodology was applied to a pilot corridor comprised of a 120km section of national highway in korea. The methodology made it possible to identify the specific performance measures that need improvement to enhance the overall environmental friendly concept. It is fairly intuitive, based on readily available data, and is easy to apply. It provides a powerful tool for government to assess the relative environmental friendly conceptof their transportation corridors now and in the future. It allows for comparisons within a corridor and with other corridors and identifies the improvements needed to enhance the environmental friendly concept.
