  • In this paper, we studied about the dynamic behavior of a cracked rotating cantilever beam. The influences of a rotating angular velocity, the crack depth and the crack position on the dynamic behavior of a cracked cantilever beam have been studied by the numerical method. The equation of motion is derived by using the Lagrange's equation. The cracked cantilever beam is modeled by the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The lateral tip-displacement and the axial tip-deflection of a rotating cantilever beam is more sensitive to the rotating angular velocity than the depth and position of crack. Totally, as the crack depth is increased, the natural frequency of a rotating cantilever beam is decreased in the first and second mode of vibration. When the crack depth is constant, the natural frequencies of a rotating cantilever beam are proportional to the rotating angular velocity in the each direction.

  • Two kinds of experimental modal analyses have been performed on a radial tire for passenger car under fixed axle. One is the modal analysis to obtain three-dimensional modes of tire using accelerometers and the other is the one to identify cavity resonance frequency using a pressure sensor. From the first analysis, we have obtained three-dimensional natural modes and their decomposed 3-D modes in each direction, which make it possible to grasp the features of the modes that cannot be identified in the conventional 2-D modes and to classify the vibrationall modes into symmetric, non-symmetric, and antisymmetric modes in a simple way by using the experimental results. From the second experimental analysis, the cavity resonance frequency is found. Coomparing the results of the two analyses, we have Identified the three-dimensional mode of the cavity resonance. We also haute shown that natural frequencies of structural vibration depends on inflation Pressure while the cavity resonance does not.

  • The vibration and buckling characteristics of the capsule for fuel irradiation test are studied. The natural frequencies of the capsule in air and under water are obtained by modal testing and finite element (FE) analysis using ANSYS program, and accelerations with flow are measured to estimate the compatibility with the operation requirement of the HANARO reactor. The experimental fundamental frequencies of the capsule in the x and z direction are 8.5 Hz and 8.75 Hz in air, and 7.5 Hz and 7.75 Hz under water, respectively. The maximum amplitude of accelerations under the normal operating condition is measured as 11.0 m/s$^2$ that is within the allowable vibrational limit(18.99 m/s$^2$) of the reactor structure. Also, the maximum displacement at 100% flow is calculated as 0.13 mm which is not interference with other nearby structures. FE analysis results show that the natural frequencies are found to be similar to those of the modal testing when three supporting parts are considered as simply supported conditions. From the buckling analysis, when the loading tool is applied, the critical buckling load of the capsule is 233 N.

  • Presented in this dissertation is a new method of identifying the critical speed of rotor-bearing systems without actually reaching at the critical speed itself. Using the method, it is possible to calculate the critical speed by measuring a series of rotor responses at much lower rotating speeds away from and without reaching at the critical speed of the system. In the course of the procedures illustrated, not only the critical speed but also the damping ratio and the eccentricity of the system can be identified at the same time. Test rotor was tested on the Rotor Dynamics Test Facility at the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials. Korea, and the theory has been confirmed experimentally. The method can be adopted to monitor changes of the dynamic characteristics of critical rotating machinery before and after overhauls, repairs, exchanges of various parts, or to detect trends or direction of subtle changes in the dynamic characteristic parameters over a long periods of time.

  • In this study, the relationship between the shape of a passenger airbag and the possibility of injury is analyzed using the Taguchi method. The optimal shape combination is proposed for a design guideline that can reduce the possibility of injury to the dummy. The airbag FE model for analysis is obtained using a CAD system that can change the shape through several independent variables. The widths of the left / right, top / bottom, and back / forth direction of the airbag shape are set as the design factors, and the effect of the combination injury probability according to the shape is analyzed. The minimum geometric combinations are obtained using the orthogonal array method. The signal to noise ratio is calculated and the optimal shape combination is obtained through sensitivity analysis. The obtained optimal shape combination is compared with the possibility of injury of the initial airbag shape to confirm improved airbag performance.

  • Optical image stabilization is a technique to compensate the image blurring caused by some vibrations of camera at the exposure time. Pitching and yawing of camera are sensitive to the image quality so they are usually compensated by optical image stabilization. Corresponding pitching and yawing of a camera, a lens or the image sensor is translated in two-axis direction and then the optical path of camera is adjusted. In this paper, two-axis OIS actuator for mobile camera module is suggested and designed. The actuator is a voice-coil actuator that uses the electromagnetic force of voice-coil to make compensation motions. And ball bearing is used to reduce friction force. Magnetic attractive force between magnets and yokes acts as a preload and magnet springs. Prototype actuator is fabricated to measure the friction force and to verify the feasibility of the OIS actuator with ball bearing. At last, the actuator is improved in consideration of driving force and friction force. Design of experiments is used for designing the actuator.

  • The objective of this study is to review the current stare of earthquake simulation techniques using the shaking table and check the reliability. One degree-of-freedom(d.o.f.)and three d.o.f. aluminium shear models were used and 4m$\times$4m 6 d.o.f. shaking table was excitated in one horizontal direction to simulate 1940 El centro earthquake accelerogram (NS component). When the acceleration history of shaking table is compared to the desired one, it can be found that the overall histories are very similar, but that the lower frequency range (0~2 Hz) of the actual excitation has generally lower amplitude than that of the desired in fourier transform amplitude. Free vibration and white noise tests have shown almost the same values for natural frequencies, but shown quite different values for damping ratios, that is, 1.37% in case of r\free vibration test vs 14.76% in case of white noise test. The time histories of story shear versus story drift show the globally linear elastic behaviors. But the elliptical shape of the histories with one of the axis being the stiffness of the story implies the effect of viscous damping.

  • A high resolution algorithm is presented for resolving multiple narrowband plane waves that are incident on an equispaced linear array. To overcome the deleterious effects due to coherent sources, a number of noise-eigenvector-based approaches have been proposed for narrowband signal processing. For differing reasons, each f these methods provide a less than satisfactory resolution of the coherency problem. The proposed algorithm makes use of fundamental property possessed by those eigenvectors of the spatial covariance matrix that are associated with eigenvalues that are larger than the sensor noise level. This property is then used to solve the incoherent and coherent sources incident on an equispaced linear array. Simulation results are shown to illustrate the high resolution performance achieved with this new approach relative to that obtained with MUSIC and spatial smoothed MUSIC.

  • Pattern Recognition is one of the fundamental areas of computer vision. The recognition of patterns with varying size and severe defects is especially important. However, it is known that the conventional algorithms such as GHT or structural approaches have limitations in speed and accuracy. In this paper, in order to avoid above-mentioned problems, we propose a new recognition algorithm which exploits the histogram of contour directions and the sampled spot matching method. While the former provides little influence against size variation, the latter has strong immunity to noise and defects. We applied those proposed algorithms for the recognition of numbers extracted from the car number plates and shapes of aircraft. Experimental result shows that it is possible to solve above-mentioned problems by complementary uses of those two suggested algorithms. The contour directional histogram method resulted in high-speed of average 0.013 sec/char and 0.1 sec/aircraft-image on IBM-386. The accuracy of recognition is as high as 99%. Sampled spot matching method has less speed than the former one, however, it showed fairly strong immunity to noise and defects.

  • Edge in images appears when a great difference shows up in light and shade between pixels and includes data of the subject's size, location direction and etc. The edge is generally detected by the methods such as Sobel, Roberts, Laplacian, LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) and etc. However, in AWGN(additive white Gaussian noise) added images, quality of the edge becomes slightly uncertain. Therefore, this paper proposed edge detection algorithm using modified mask of weighting to improve the quality of the existing methods. And in order to verify the performance efficiency of the proposed method, processed image and PFOM(Pratt's figure of merit) has been used as valuation standard for a comparison with the existing methods.
