  • Assessment of the dynamics properties, like damping, dynamic stiffness and resonance sharpness is essential for the development of a robust system, specifically for the reduction of a traction motor noise. A practical method for identifying dynamic characteristics of a traction motor hosing for an electric vehicle is proposed. Assembling using interference fit of the components of the motor is attributed to the main cause of strong nonlinearity. It is well known that nonlinearity of a structure makes it difficult to assess damping properties or dynamic characteristics of the system. This research presents a practical damping or dynamic stiffness identifying procedures for a nonlinear system according to the boundary condition between assembled components. Based on the simple idea that impact forces of modal tests are highly affected on the condition of the hammer tip, Auto Power Spectrum of the impact forces are used to assess the assembling condition and dynamic characteristics of the system, especially, damping of the system.

  • Fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm is a most usually technique for medical image segmentation. But conventional FCM fails to perform well enough on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data with the noise and intensity inhomogeneity (IIH). In the paper, we propose a Gamma correction conditional FCM algorithm with spatial information (GcsFCM) to solve this problem. Firstly, the pre-processing, Gamma correction, is introduced to enhance the details of images. Secondly, the spatial information is introduced to reduce the effect of noise. Then we introduce the effective neighborhood mechanism into the local space information to improve the robustness for the noise and inhomogeneity. And the mechanism describes the degree of participation in generating local membership values and building clusters. Finally, the adjustment mechanism and the spatial information are combined into the weighted membership function. Experimental results on four image volumes with noise and IIH indicate that the proposed GcsFCM algorithm is more effective and robust to noise and IIH than the FCM, sFCM and csFCM algorithms.

  • A single channel VAD (Voice Activity Detection) algorithm for nonstationary noise environment is proposed in this paper. Threshold values of the feature parameter for VAD decision are updated adaptively based on estimates of means and standard deviations of past non-speech frames. The feature parameter, SPD-TE (Spectral Power Difference-Teager Energy), is obtained by applying the Teager energy to the WPD (Wavelet Packet Decomposition) coefficients. It was reported previously that the SPD-TE is robust to noise as a feature for VAD. Experimental results by using TIMIT speech and NOISEX-92 noise databases show that decision accuracy of the proposed algorithm is comparable to several typical VAD algorithms including standards for SNR values ranging from 10 to -10 dB.

  • This paper presents a new approach to noise estimation to improve speech enhancement in non-stationary noisy environments. The proposed method combines the two separate noise power estimates provided by the minimum statistics (MS) for speech presence and soft decision (SD) for speech absence in accordance with SAP (Speech Absence Probability) on a separate frequency bin. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the subjective test under various noise environments and yields better results compared with the conventional MS or SD-based schemes.

  • Distress data, IRI, etc. are important factors in the evaluation of pavement condition. Recently, the need to consider tire-pavement noise in PMS (pavement management system) is raised. Generally, tire-pavement noise highly depends on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information to predict tire-pavement noise. Measurement of MPD (Mean Profile Depth) by using PLP (Portable Laser Profiler) provide very fast. The texture characteristics by means of MPD can be in a short time. hence, It can be a good alternative to give noise information, if MPD and tire-pavement noise have robust relationship. In this study, MPD and tire-pavement noise were simultaneously collected on the number of asphalt section to evaluate the tire-pavement noise due to the pavement texture characteristics. A set of statistical analysis was performed to propose relationship between tire-pavement noise and MPD for asphalt concrete pavement.

  • In this work, the minimum statistics (MS) algorithm is combined with the codebook driven short-term predictor parameter estimation (CDSTP) to design a speech enhancement algorithm that is robust against various background noise environments. The MS algorithm functions well for the stationary noise but relatively not for the non-stationary noise. The CDSTP works efficiently for the non-stationary noise, but not for the noise that was not considered in the training stage. Thus, we propose to combine CDSTP and MS. Compared with the single use of MS and CDSTP, the proposed method produces better perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) score, and especially works excellent for the mixed background noise between stationary and non-stationary noises.

  • In this paper, we compare the performance of IS-OFDM(interference suppressing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) system with that of the conventional OFDM system. Each parallel branch symbol of IS-OFDM is multiplied by the orthogonal sequence and distributed into all sub-carriers. Then, each sub-carrier transmits information composed of the symbol components of all parallel branches in the given frame. The structure of IS-OFDM shows the frequency diversity characteristic. Therefore, IS-OFDM can be robust to the narrowband interference. BER performances are found in the narrow-band interference and a harmonic noise channels. When JSR(Jamming to signal ratio) increases from -10 dB to +10 dB in the constant interference bandwidth, IS-OFDM outperforms the conventional OFDM and the BER difference between IS-OFDM and OFDM is reduced as JSR increases. Also, the similar properly can be shown when interference bandwidth increases at the constant JSR. In the harmonic noise channel, we can find the good performance of IS-OFDM when the h-rate(harmonic noise bandwidth to signal bandwidth ratio) increases from 0.01 to 0.8. So, simulation results show that the IS-OFDM is more robust to the interference than the conventional OFDM.

  • In this paper, we tried to realize a next generation MILES detection system which is robust to optical noise using a narrow band interference optical filter. Applying a narrow band interference optical filter which has the wavelength range of 895~915nm to the LASER wavelength of 900nm, we could obtain detection characteristics robust to strong optical noise which can be occurred in street battles. However, the MILES detection system has the blind range of detection in the incident angle range of $30^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$. To solve this problem we proposed a method of incident angle scatter using refractors. Applying a concave meniscus lens refractor which has diopter of 5.4 to the MILES detection system, we could eliminate the blind angle of detection.

  • By comparing two images, which are captured with the same scene at different time, we can detect a set of outliers, such as occluding objects due to moving vehicles. To reduce the influence from the different intensity properties of the images, an intensity compensation scheme, which is based on the polynomial regression model, is employed. For an accurate detection of outliers alleviating the influence from a set of outliers, a simple technique that reruns the regression is employed. In this paper, an algorithm that iteratively reruns the regression is theoretically analyzed by observing the convergence property of the estimates of the noise variance. Using a correction constant for the estimate of the noise variance is proposed. The correction enables the detection algorithm robust to the choice of thresholds for selecting outliers. Numerical analysis using both synthetic and Teal images are also shown in this paper to show the robust performance of the detection algorithm.
