  • Structural acoustic modification method based on the structural mobility analysis is applied to reduce the structure-borne noise radiated from hard disk drive system. Sound intensity techniques and ODS(Operational Deflection Shape) techniques are also used in order to provide the structural acoustic information for the mobility modification. The sound intensity is for the acoustic visualization of the noise source locations, and the ODS is for the visualization of the vibration pattern and its dynamic characteristics of the noise sources. Using visualization information of sound and vibration, local structural input mobility is reduced in the frequency band of interest by designing asymmetrical wave-stringer structure in the wave-number domain as well as frequency domain. The overall sound pressure level is reduced by 4dB and its controlled sound power radiated from the disk drive is proved to under 2.8Bel in idle-spinning mode and 3.1 Bel in random-seeking mode, which are the lowest noise levels in the hard disk drive industry.

  • The Beta-ray absorption method (BAM) gives a good solution for measuring the mass concentration of atmospheric particles(PM10 and PM2.5). To determine particular matters (PM) concentration, a ratio of the number of detected beta-ray intensity passing through the clean filter and the dust-sampled filter is used. These intensity data measured in air pollution monitoring such as PM10 and PM2.5 usually contained the additive noise(thermal noise, power supply noise and etc.). Therefore, the estimation performance of mass concentration can be deteriorated by these noises. In this paper, we present a new noise reduction method that is essentially required to develope an automatic continuous PM monitoring system using beta-ray absorption method. By combining the block data averaging technique and curve fitting, in the proposed method, the additive noise can be reduced in the measured data. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, computer simulations were performed with computer generated signals as the input.

  • In speech recognition under a noisy environment, it is necessary to construct a system which reduces the noise and enhances the speech. Then it is effective to imitate the human auditory system which has an excellent analytical spectrum mechanism for speech enhancement. Accordingly, this paper proposes an adaptive method using the auditory mechanism which is called lateral inhibition. This method first estimates the noise intensity by neural network, then adaptively adjusts both the coefficients of the lateral inhibition and the adjusting coefficient of amplitude component according to the noise intensity for each input frame. It is confirmed that the proposed method is effective for speech degraded by white noise, colored noise, and road noise based on the spectral distortion measurement.

  • The identification of power flow in dynamically loaded structures Is essential in the analysis of structure-borne noise. However there are no general purpose tools to estimate powers flow. To make matters worse. It is very difficult to measure it. The power flow can be formulated in terms of balance forces(ELFORCE) at each element and velocities at the associated node obtained with MSC/NASTHAN. In this paper the procedure which is consist of the computations of the balance forces of al1 elements and the velocities at all nodes using MSC/NASTRAN. The calculations of the power f1ow at each element using PCL(PATRAN Command Language) and the Preparation of post -processes is set UP.

  • The sidewall of the HEMU-400x consists of two parts. One is the multi-layered structure including aluminium extruded panel and the other is the double glazed window. When the train runs in a tunnel, the equivalent sound insulation performance of the side wall significantly influences the internal noise levels. In aspect of the sound insulation strategy, it is important to make two parts have similar performance. In this study, the intensity sound transmission loss (ITL) is measured on the specimens of the two parts. Mass law deviation (MLD) is considered in order to compare the sound insulation performance of the two parts in respect of the weight. Contribution of each part to the sound insulation is analyzed and the sound insulation strategy is investigated to reduce the interior noise.

  • During one revolution of a gear, the intensity of the gear-meshing noise or vibration will vary, depending upon the run-out in the pitch diameter of the gear. Here noise can be produced bu excentricity of the shaft with respect to the base circle and by pitch errors. According to the noise generated is clearly dependent on the force and the amount of energy expended in elastically straining the machine member. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the analysis of the noise and technical reduction of gear noise for machine tool.

  • Compressor is a major noise source of air-conditioner. Especially, its low frequency band noise below 1000㎐ is very important because it will not be attenuated by passing through the cover panel and heat exchanger in air-conditioner. The factors affecting the low frequency band noise are studied by geometric similarity along with several experiments, and the low frequency noise is closely related with the discharge holes of muffler as well as the cavity of lower shell. • A mental task combined with noise background is an effective model of laboratory stress for study of psychophysiology of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The intensity of the background noise significantly affects both a subjective evaluation of experienced stress level during test and the physiological responses associated with mental load in noisy environments. Providing tests of similar difficulties we manipulated the background noise intensity as a main factor influencing a psychophysiological outcome and the analyzed reactivity along withe the noise intensity dimension. The goal of this study was to identify the patterns of ANS responses and the relevant subjective stress scores during performance of word recognition tasks on the background of white noise (WN) of the different intensities (55, 70 and 85 dB). Subjects were 27 college students (19-24 years old). BIOPAC, Grass Neurodata System and AcqKnowlwdge 3.5 software were used to record ECG, PPG, SCL, skin temperature, and respiration. Experimental manipulations were effective in producing subjective and physiological responses usually associated with stress. The results suggested that the following potential autonomic mechanisms might be involved in the mediation of the observed physiological responses: A sympathetic activation with parasympathetic withdrawal during mild 55 and 70dB noise (featured by similar profiles) and simultaneous activation of sympathetic and parasympathetic systems during intense 85dB WN. The parasympathetic activation in this case might be a compensatory effect directed to prevent sympathetic domination and to maintain optimal arousal state for the successful performance on mental stress task. It should be mentioned that obtained results partially support Gellhorn's (1960; 1970) "tuning phenomenon" as a possible mechanism underlying stress response.
