  • Objectives : This study investigates the association between weather conditions and the rate of no-shows at an academic medical center. Methods : Electronic data regarding medical appointments atover the course ofone academic year (2016.03~2017.02) were used for analysis. Characteristics of weather conditions and the daily number of no-shows were compared by Chi-square test. A logistic regression was run to determine if certain aspects of weather affected the rate of no-shows. Results : The results reveal an overall no-show rate of 6.8% that appears to vary in accordance with specific weather conditions. Lower average temperatures, in particular, corresponded with a higher rate of no-show patients. This may indicate that o-show rates in autumn and winter can be expected to exceed those during spring. Conclusions : This study investigates the association between no-show patients and weather conditions, and offers suggestions for augmenting this loss. One recommendation is to begin conducting investigations nationwide in order to provide more useful information.

  • The beauty industry has evolved into a highly competitive service sector, expanding alongside economic growth. Nail art, in particular, has witnessed a remarkable surge in popularity. To efficiently manage individual time, nail salons have adopted reservation systems. However, the issue of no-shows, where customers fail to keep their appointments, has emerged as a significant societal and economic concern. This study seeks to identify and address the root causes of no-shows in nail salons, providing essential data for the industry. A comprehensive survey was conducted, involving 476 customers from nail salons in the Daejeon and Chungcheong regions. Survey responses were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 software. Results revealed that a change of mind was the primary reason for no-shows. This underscores the importance of promoting reservation awareness among both businesses and consumers. To mitigate no-shows, suggestions included implementing non-refundable reservation deposits and imposing cancellation fees. Notably, the beauty industry currently lacks systematic regulations concerning no-shows, highlighting the necessity for future research aimed at developing reservation-related guidelines and standards.

  • In order to maximize the efficiency and the quality of care in a hospital, hospitals in general operate by appointments. Patient no-shows or missed appointments waste the time of staffs who prepare for appointments, deprive patients of needed care, and increase burden on clinic capacity. The purpose of this study is to examine the importance and significance of factors that affect patient no-shows. The actual data of 50,000 outpatient appointments is compiled and analyzed from a VAMC in the United States with aims to identify the factors that contribute to outpatient no-shows and to draw meaningful implications. Random forest along with logistic regression analysis identify the factors affecting no-shows; appointment leadtime, show-up rate, travel distance, no-show rate in previous period, patient age, severity, complexity of disease, chronic pain, depression, drug dependence. The appointment leadtime, show-up rate, travel distance and previous no-show rate can be improved by enhancing SMS pre-notification and by improving afterwards telephone counseling. For other factors, it needs to study on the service differentiation with the characteristics of each patient group.

  • This study focuses on analyzing no-shows associated with patients' clinical characteristics described by diagnoses in their medical data. A dataset of 7,055 patient-records from a Veterans hospital in the United States was used to test if there is difference on no-shows along with each patient's diagnosed diseases and the number of diagnoses. Patients with mental diseases such as drug dependence abuse and major depression, and chronic diseases such as hypertension are more likely to no-show. In comparisons with the number of diagnoses, the no-show decreases as the number of diagnoses increases up to four and doesn't change significantly afterwards. We provide managerial insights on clinical operations problems from statistical analysis. We believe that our results can be used to develop appropriate solutions on no-shows in clinics.

  • The distribution and changes of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) are analyzed using the satellite measurements data from GOME (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment) and SCIMACHY (SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY). We produced global maps of tropospheric $NO_2$ for 4 seasons using GOME measurements from January 1997 to June 2003. The global distribution shows high values in regions with dense population and high industrialization. Tropospheric $NO_2$ shows obvious seasonal changes depending on its emission and lifetime. Based on the good agreement between two instruments in the time period of overlapping measurements (January 2003-June2003), we linked SClAMACHY data to the GOME time series. The combined time series over the past decade indicate that $NO_2$ 1evels over China are rapidly increasing while those over Europe are decreasing. We also discussed potential application of spaceborne instruments in detecting and characterizing long-distance transport of $NO_2$.

  • Effect of ethene on the $DeNO_X$ conversion process in a simulated diesel engine operating conditions was investigated experimentally and theoretically. With the addition of even a small amount of ethene the NO to $NO_2$ conversion enhances greatly. The energy required to convert one NO molecule is 27 eV with 250 ppm ethene added, while 137 eV without ethene at 473 K. The effect of energy density, temperature, and the initial concentrations of ethene and oxygen are also discussed and the results show that the increase of the mentioned parameters lead to the promotion of NO oxidation. A kinetic model used in this study shows good agreement with the experimental result. Byproducts like formaldehyde ($CH_2$ 0) and methyl nitrite ($CH_3$ ONO) predicted by model calculation are broken up into CO and $H_2O$ eventually when high energy is delivered to the gas mixture. Sensitivity analysis shows that the main reactions of NO oxidation when ethene is added we: $HO_2+ NO \arrow NO_2 + OH, RO_2 + NO \arrow NO_2 + RO$, where R is a hydrocarbon radical. Also the direct oxidizing reaction of NO with O cannot be neglected.

  • This study is a part of project of urea-SCR system development for an in-use medium duty diesel engine. This study shows the effect of ammonia oxidation catalyst and SCR volume on $NO_X$ reduction performance. When AOC(Ammonia Oxidation Catalyst) is not used, the urea injection should be controlled accurately to prevent $NH_3$ slip. However, it is found that the accurate $NH_3$ slip control is not easy without AOC in real engine operating conditions, because $NH_3$ and $NO_X$ reaction characteristics change with many factors such as exhaust gas temperature and $NH_3$ absorbance on SCR. SCR volume is also one of important design parameters. This study shows that $NO_X$ reduction efficiency increases with increase of SCR volume especially at high space velocity and low exhaust gas temperature conditions. Additionally, this paper shows the emissions of EURO-2 medium duty diesel engine can be improved to the level of EURO-5 with a DPF and urea-SCR system.

  • Marine traffic safety of the Vung Tau Waterway, from port limit to Ganh Rai Gulf, plays a crucial role in the economic development of the important triangular economic zone in the south of Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Province, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. This paper uses the IWRAP Mk2 program to assess marine traffic safety and shows that in the area there are three parts of fairway have highest risk of collision (from buoys No. 8-9 to buoys No. 1-2 of the Song Dinh fairway; from buoy No. 0 to buoys No. 8-9 and from buoys No. 6-9 to buoys No. 8-9A of the Sai Gon-Vung Tau fairway) and the two areas have highest risk of grounding (the Vung Tau coastline from Ganh Hao to Sao Mai and an area in the Ganh Rai Gulf). In addition, the result of a questionnaire survey on a group of Pilots shows that wind, current and rain/fog have considerable negative effect to ship handling of large vessels in this area. This paper's results will be used in the further research to discover solutions for improving marine traffic safety in the Vung Tau Waterway.
