A Study on the performance test of Water mist system as a fire extinguish system for Ships (선박용 미분무수 소화설비의 성능평가연구)

  • Developed and conducted a performance test of the Water mist system that is satisfied with the requirement of a fire test requiring Class 3 Engine Mock-up exceeding net volume $3,000m^3$ as per IMO's MSC/Circ. 668 Appendix B(Test method for fire testing equivalent water-based fire-extinguishing systems for machinery spaces of category A and cargo pump rooms).Even though fuel atomizing was continued for 15 sec. after stopping of the system according to the test method relating to the atomizing fire type, no fire was reignited. This result shows the excellence of the system. There was no damage to the contents of the system after the test.

An Experimental Study on Piping Feasibility of PE Compound Pipe for Fire Protection Service (PE 이종강관의 소방용 배관 적용성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, to determine whether it is possible to apply Polyethylene (PE) compound pipe, which was developed to solve the problem caused by the corrosion of the fire protection piping currently in usein water based fire extinguishing systems, we performed an actual mockup fire test. Since no test standard was available related to the developed compound pipe, we compared and analyzed domestic and international technical materials and test standards and selected suitable fire test standards to evaluate the performance of the PE compound pipe. we applied two fire test standards to the PE compound pipe, viz. those for CPVC and metallic pipes, and conducted a total of 6 experiments to evaluate its performance. According to the results of the first and second fire tests based on the test standard for the CPVC pipe, neither the fitting nor the piping was damaged or deformed and no leakage was observed in the pressure test, which was performed for 5 minutes. For the fire test based on the metallic pipe test standard, a total of 4 experiments were conducted. The first two experiments were conducted to simulate the wet piping system. In the results of this fire test, neither leakage nor rupture was observed from the PE compound pipe and no damage was caused, such as the secession of the PE material. However, in the next two experiments, which simulated the dry system, the PE compound pipe suffered damage and rupture, including deformation before the fire fighting water was discharged. Therefore, we found that the piping performance of the PE compound pipe did not undergo any deterioration, including fusion, deformation, or damage, in the wet piping system simulated fire test.

  • Actual fire test under a laboratory and fire simulation by using computer are considered into main methodology in order to estimate and predict fire size of railway train. Even if practical fire size could be obtained from the full-model railway car test such as a large scale cone-calorimeter test, it is not always possible and realistic due to that expensive cost and attendant dangers could in no way be negligible. In this point of view, fire simulation analysis method based on the computational fluid dynamics could be proposed as an alternative and it seems to be also efficient and reasonable. However, simulation results have to be verified and validated in accordance with the proper procedure including comparing analysis with the actual fire test. In this paper, fire load and growth aspect was investigated through the room corner test (ISO 9705) for the mock-up model of the actual railway car. Then, it was compared with the output data derived from the simulation by using Pyrolysis Model of the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator, by NIST) for the exact same domain and condition corresponding with pre-performed room-corner test. This preliminary verified and validated fire modeling method could enhance the reliability of output data derived from the fire simulation under the similar domain and condition.

  • Many kinds of fire-stop sealants have been used for joint sealing, cable penetration part sealing and fireproof structure finishing etc in building sectors which need water-proofing and fire-stop properties. But, fire-stop sealant itself has no specific industry standards in Korea even though there are so many required properties for the application. So, in this study, for the evaluation, we adopted and applied UL standard 94(UL 94) which is commonly used for the fire retardant testing in inflammable materials like plastics and rubbers in electronics industry. In this study, we demonstrated fire resistance properties of each fire-stop sealants which varied with different formulation, thickness and origins available in Korea. Overall, fire stop sealant had better fire resistance performance than normal construction sealant. And the thicker the material, the better the fire resistance performance was. Because there is no national or industry guideline for fire stop sealant itself, each sealant products showed different level of performances under UL94 desigation. Even certain product had very poor fire proof propeties although it claims it can be used for the application.

  • A study developing the dry powder fire extinguishing system inside the simulated machinery spaces of small boats was performed. Fire tests were conducted inside the compartments having volumes 2.9, 4.5, $8m^3$ respectively. The openings and fans were established on the walls of the compartments. Diesel oil was used for the test fuel, In addition fire extinguishing nozzles using dry powder were installed downward at ceiling and horizontally at the wall or conner. All fires in the test were extinguished under system activation and there was no reignition.

  • The reduced scale fire test provides basic data but it is not enough to analysis real fire problem directly because there is no exact analogy theory between a real fire and the reduced scale model. Therefore, we have developed the 10 MW large scale calorimeter in order to real scale fire test. This advanced large scale calorimeter used for physical properties such as a heat release rate, based upon consumption of $O_2$ method. Using the heptane pool fire, we carried out the calibration in order to evaluation for heat release rate. It is approve that this facility has the reliability and it is capable of applying to the advance fire research in the future.

  • In this paper, we developed a breather valve with a water mist system for use near an oil storage tank. Our process applied a water mist system to the flame arrester to evaluate the fire suppression characteristics. For the fire suppression evaluation of the water mist system, we evaluated the angle of the nozzle, fire suppression, spray particle size, flashback, fire suppression time, and fire suppression test of antifreeze. Through the fire suppression test, the best fire suppression nozzle used an angle of $140^{\circ}$, and the flashback phenomenon of flame arrester did not occur. The fire suppression time of water mist system time was within three seconds, and the antifreeze was no problem with the fire suppression.

A Study on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Ability Using Nitrogen and Novec Mixtures Gas (질소와 노벡 혼합가스를 이용한 청정소화약제의 소화성능에 관한 연구)

  • In the course of increasing in human and material damage caused by fire, it is an important research field to develop clean extinguishing agent which does no harm to global environment as well as has a good extinguishing efficiency. This research is a basic step to develop a new clean extinguishing agent. In order to get a satisfactory result, we tested fire extinguishing ability using nitrogen and Novec mixtures gas which are inert gas and new clean extinguishing agent. We used Cup Burner Test made by international standard ISO-14520 regulations of gaseous extinguishing agent ability test, and the fuels used in the test are n-heptane, methanol, ethanol, iso-propanol and 1-butanol. The experimental results of flame extinguishing concentration are n-heptane 6.54%, methanol 8.47%, ethanol 6.98%, isopropanol 6.10% and butanol 6.54% by pure Novec agent. So the finding is that a new clean agent, Novec has an efficient extinguishing ability in a state of gas. Also, in a test as to mixtures gas of nitrogen and Novec, it has a good result for minimum oxygen concentration is under 16%.

  • In this study, tests were conducted to establish a fire engine of relay waterproof and utilization in order to maintain the pressure in a situation that require high-pressure water-resistant such as a high-rise building fire, etc. As a result of test on the change of a relay waterproof pressure, the measurement result with the hydrant intake of a fire engine opened has reduced approximately 20 % compared to the measurement result with the hydrant intake closed. Similar efficiency showed in the test result that change the pressure of 2 fire engines respectively to use them more efficiently at a fire fighting activity site. A fire engine operation and utilization is proposed based on this study result in order to cope effectively with a fire site requiring high-pressure stream in a high-rise building fire, etc. by using a fire engine held at present because there is no fire pump with high-pressure stream ability arranged at the fire station and there is no regulation on high-pressure fire-fighting pumps in a type approval and verification technology criterion for a fire engine.
