  • In this study, an experimental study is performed to understand the effect of spalling on the structural behavior of fire damaged steel reinforced high strength concrete (SRHSC) columns, and the test results of temperature distributions and the displacements at elevated temperature are analyzed. Toward this goal, three long columns are tested to investigate the effect of various test parameters on structural behavior during the fire, and twelve short columns are tested to investigate residual strength and stiffness after the fire. The test parameters are mixture ratios of polypropylene fiber (0 and 0.1 vol.%), magnitudes of applied loads (concentric loads and eccentric loads), and the time period of exposure to fire (0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes). The experimental results show that there is significant effect of loading on the structural behaviors of columns under fire. The loaded concrete columns result more explosive spalling than the unloaded columns under fire. In particular, eccentrically loaded columns are severely spalled. The temperature distributions of the concrete are not affected by the loading state if there is no spalling. However, the loading state affects the temperature distributions when there is spalling occurred. In addition, it is found that polypropylene fiber prevents spalling of both loaded and unloaded columns under fire. From these experimental findings, an equation of predicting residual load capacity of the fire damaged column is proposed.

  • Pulse tube refrigerator, which has no moving parts at its cold section, is attractive fer obtaining higher reliability, simpler construction and lower vibration than Stilting refrigerator or Gifford-McMahon refrigerator. Commonly used means to achieve optimum performance of Stilting type pulse tube refrigerator is an inertance tube. The use of inertance tube is a simple way to generate the phase shift needed to make pulse tube refrigerator operate as efficiently as Stilting refrigerator. In this study, the performance of the inertance pulse tube refrigerator (IPTR) was investigated experimentally. An in-line type IPTR consists of a linear compressor with two reciprocating pistons driven by linear motors, which makes pressure waves, a regenerator a pulse tube with the inertance tube, and a reservoir, The dynamic pressures (the compressor, pulse tube, reservior) and the temperature at the cold heat exchanger are measured to explore the dependence of the inertance tube on the performance of the IPTR. The experimental results show the dependency of cool-down characteristics, no-load temperature and amplitude of the pressures on the length and diameter of the inertance tube.

  • Using the solenoid driven gas injection valve, Hydrogen fuel supply system was made. It was attached to a single cylinder research engine and intake port injection type hydrogen fueled S.I. engine was constructed. Engine performance, emission characteristics, and abnormal combustion were studied through the engine test performed with the variations of fuel-air equivalence ratio and spark timing. Compared with gasoline, hydrogen burns so fast that cylinder peak pressure and temperature are higher and NO is emitted more at full load condition. IN the case of intake port injection type engine, COVimep becomes lower due to the well-mixing of air and fuel, and engine output is lower owing to the low volumetric efficiency. As fuel-air equivalence ratio goes up, the combustion speed increases, and COVimep decreases. NO emission peaks slightly lean of stoichiometric. As spark timing advances and fuel-air equivalence ratio goes up, the cylinder peak pressure and temperature become higher, so abnormal combustions take place easily.

  • The increasing automobiles continue to cause air-pollution problem s worse than ever. In fact, many automobile research are involved in how to reduce exhaust emissions effectively specially in $NO_X$ and PM to comply with stringent emission standards, Euro V. This research emphasized on the development of continuous regeneration DPF technology which was one of promising removing technology of particulate matters because of its comparability and high applicability. In addition, this research discussed on some design points of view through correlation study by com paring the experimental data with computational results by the introduction of commercial codes such as CFD-ACE+ and KIVA-3V. The numerical simulation on the performance of continuous regeneration DPF apparatus and corresponding emission characteristics has been predicted well enough and verified with experimental results. The pressure and average temperatures are decreased to about 2.6% and 1.4% respectively under a full engine load condition mainly due to back pressures raised by diesel particulate filter. Pressure, temperature and heat releasing rates tend to decrease specially at higher engine load, but they are not affected at lower engine load regions.

  • Forest fire simulation tests were performed with polymer and porcelain insulators at GOCHANG Power Testing Center. These tests consisted of open flames causing a temperature rise of up to $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ measured at the insulator surfaces. Mechanical and electrical characteristics such as the specific mechanical load, the low frequency dry flashover voltage and the impulse flashover voltage were analyzed for the polymer insulators before, during and after the simulation tests and then compared to the porcelain insulators. At the end of the fire simulation tests, there was no detrimental deterioration of any of the insulators. All the insulators passed the KEPCO specification criteria. This study showed that the forest fire simulation had no impact on the polymer insulators.

  • In this paper, a speed sensorless control for an ultrasonic motor (USM) using a neural network (NN) is presented. In the proposed method, rotor speed is estimated by a three-layer NN which adapts nonlinearities associated with load torque and motor temperature into control. The intrinsic properties of a USM, such as high torque for low speeds, high static torque, compact size, etc., offer great advantages for industrial applications. However, the speed property of a USM has strong nonlinear properties associated with motor temperature and load torque, which make accurate speed control difficult. These properties are considered in designing a control method through the application of mathematical models. In these strategies, a detailed speed model of the USM is required which makes actual applications impractical. In the proposed method, a three-layer NN estimates the speed of the USM from the drive frequency, the root mean square value of input voltage and the surface temperature of the USM, where no mechanical speed sensor is needed. The NN speed based estimator enables inclusion of variations in driving conditions due to input signals of the NN involved during the driving state of the USM. The disuse of sensors offers many advantages on both the cost and maintenance front. Moreover, the model free sensorless control method offers practical controller construction within a small number of parameters. To validate the proposed speed sensorless control method for a USM, experiments have been executed under several conditions.

  • In this study, the flow and combustion characteristics of flat flame burner with twirler were investigated. There are several factors that define the characteristics of burner. Among them, the experiments was focused on swirl effect by four types of twirler in terms of flow structure, distribution of temperature and emission characteristics. In PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) experiment, the less of swirl number, axial flow is dominant at the center. As swirl number increases, the flow develops along the burner tile and backward flow becomes stronger at center. From the combustion characteristics, as long as combustion load increases, blow-off limit was improved. But at the higher swirl number, the limit is decreased. At swirl number 0, the temperature is shown typical distribution of long flame burner. but swirl number increases, the temperature distribution is uniform in front of round tile. Therefore, the temperature distribution is coincided with flow structure. As excess air ratio increases, NO concentrations are high. But high swirl number gives rise to become low NO concentrations. The flame characteristics are comprised in wrinkled laminar-flame regime according to turbulence Reynolds number(Rel) and Damkohler number(Da).

  • In order to study the reasonable design thermal loads, the steel box girder bridge specimen which have no concrete slab was manufactured with the real size dimension. The temperature data were measured for 5 month at the 18 thermo gauges which were attached according to height. The temperature differences between the top and bottom flange in steel box girder specimen were calculated and the temperature gradient models were proposed by the probabilistic method. This proposed model showed a correlation of approximately 97% when compared with the similar model of Euro Code. Thus, the temperature gradient models which were suggested in this study may be used as the basis data in calculating the design load temperature.
