The possibility of microalgal nitrogen treatment was tested in wastewaters with a low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio. Chlorella kessleri was cultured in the two different artificial wastewaters with nitrate as a nitrogen source: one contained glucose for an organic carbon source and the other without organic carbon sources. The growth rates of the two cultures were almost identical when the aeration rate was over 1 vvm. These results suggest that microalgae could successfully remove nitrogen from wastewater, as far as the mass transfer of $CO_2$, was not limited. Nitrate was successfully reduced to below 2 mg $NO_3^-$-N/ml from the initial nitrate concentration of 140 mg $NO_3^-$-N/ml in 10 days, even in the wastewater with no organic carbon source. Similar results were obtained when ammonium was used as the sole nitrogen source instead of nitrate. Higher concentrations of nitrogen of 140, 280, 560 and 1,400 mg/ml were also tested and similar amounts of nitrogen were removed by algal cultures without showing any substrate inhibition.
In several leguminous plants such as acasia, arrowroot and bushclover, growth rate and contents of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the tissues and the variation in the culture media were determined. In water cultrue which was free of added nutrients, nitrogen was found to be largely in the form of nitrate(NO3-N). This NO3-N is believed to be the result of nitrification from NH4-N which was apparently released form the plants. From the studies of organ culture with root segments, the amount of nitrogen released and absorbed was found to be proportional to the amount added to the mediuim. Especially, in the N-plot, the amount of nitrogen absorbed by the tissue reached more than 90% of the amount supplied to the medium already in early stage. On the contrary, in the amount free plot, the amount of nitrogen released from the tissue was lower than the minimum level in the N-plot. The amount of total N and P in the cultured tissue was found to be influenced by the amount of nitrogen addedin the medium. However, the amount of K in the tissue was not related to the nitrogen level in the medium, but rather it was influenced by the amount of added potassium. These findings present little difference in the metabolic pattern among the three species plants studied, and suggest that the woody leguminous plants have some common features in tehir metabolic pattern.

The use of fly ash in construction materials is increasing worldwide due the various advantages of using it, such as to produce durable concrete, or to use less cement and thus lower carbon dioxide emissions. The quality of fly ash is often determined by loss on ignition value (LOI), where an upper limit of LOI is set in each country for quality control purpose. However, due to many reasons, production of high LOI fly ash is increasing that cannot be utilized in concrete, ending up in landfill. In this study, the effect of fly ash use in cementitious materials on nitrogen oxides adsorption is examined. In particular, the effect of using high LOI, and thus high carbon content fly ash on nitrogen oxides adsorption is investigated. The results suggest that the higher carbon content fly ash is related to higher nitrogen dioxide adsorption, although normal fly ash was also more effective in nitrogen dioxide adsorption than ordinary portland cement. Also, higher replacement rate of up to 40% of fly ash is beneficial for nitrogen dioxide adsorption. These results demonstrate that high carbon fly ash can be used as construction materials in an environmentally friendly way where strength requirement is low and where nitrogen oxides emissions are high.
Forest soils mixed with organic matters (green needle, flesh needle litter and needle litter in F layer of Pinus koraiensis, and green leaf of Quercus dentata and Q. variabilis) were incubated under a constant $30^{\circ}C({\pm}1)$ for 53 days to measure the changes of inorganic nitrogen and $CO_2$ evolution rate. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) In the early incubation period the amounts of total inorganic nitrogen in soils by mixture of organic matters decreased rapidly because of immobilization by microbial uptake, and thereafter their amounts increased with further incubation. 2) The rate of immobilization of organic nitrogen in mixed organic matters was the highest in green needle among green needle, flesh needle litter and needle litter in F layer of P. koraiensis, but lower than that of green leaf of Q. variabilis and Q. dentata. 3) The rates of $CO_2$ evolution from soils mixed with organic matters increased sharply in the early time, and then decreased slowly with increasing time. The order of the $CO_2$ evolution rate was green leaf of Q. variabilis > green leaf of Q. dentata > green needle of P. koraiensis > flesh needle litter of P. koraiensis > needle litter of P. koraiensis in F layer from the largest to the least. 4) Nitrate nitrogen concentrations showed a tendency to increase throughout incubation time, so that their concentrations after 53 days were higher than that of ammonium nitrogen.
The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is one of the most important food organisms in aquaculture. The resting eggs produced by mictic female rotifers are easily stored and hatched, making them useful as the starter for the mass culture of rotifers in marine larval culture. This study examined the optimum preservation method for resting eggs to ensure a high hatching rate. To produce resting eggs, the marine rotifer B. plicatilis was cultured with Nannochloris oculata (KMMCC 16). The resting eggs were harvested and cryopreserved using 5% and 10% methanol (MeOH), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and glycerol as cryoprotectant agents (CPAs). The cryopreservation comprised slow or rapid freezing and the resting eggs were stored for one month in liquid nitrogen ($-196^{\circ}C$). The resting eggs were also dried at different temperatures (30, 40, and $50^{\circ}C$) and for different times (1, 2, and 3 h). In general, the hatching rates of the resting eggs preserved with CPA were higher than those without CPA and the slow freezing method was better than the rapid freezing method. However, the optimum CPA concentration for the hatching rate of the resting eggs varied with the freezing method and kind of CPA, and the CPA also affected the viability of the resting eggs. Dried resting eggs had a high, rapid hatching rate over 80%. The moisture content of the resting eggs cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen affected the hatching rate. Drying at $30^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour resulted in a high hatching rate of the resting eggs. In conclusion, drying at $30^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and preservation in liquid nitrogen with the slow freezing method, without CPA, is recommended for a high hatching rate (ca. 95%) of rotifer resting eggs.

The objective of this study is to obtain the basic data for investigating the effects of organic reserves on winter survival or regrowth yield. Forage rape (Brassica napus L.) was sown by three seeding densities of 5, 15 and 25cm interval among plants on Sep. 1, 1994. Field-grown plants were sampled on the before wintering (Dec. 4) and on the wintering period (Jan. 16) to analyze the nitrogen and non-structural cahohydrate reserves. The rate of winter survival and regrowth yield were also measured in the spring of next year. The dry matter yields from the plots of 5, 15 and 25cm seeding interval were 1,270, 1.01 9 and 1,062 kg/lOa respectively, on the before wintering. The similar pattern wa5 observed in the crude protein yields affected by seeding density. On the before wintering, both of nitrogen and starch contents per plant significantly increased as the seeding density was lowered. Starch content was relatively higher than that of nitrogen in all plots. On the wintering period, the contents of nitrogen reserves were 6.5, 41.2 and 121.7 mglplant, those of starch reserves were 1.0, 5.4 and 185.1 mg/plant, respectively, in the plots of 5, 15 and 25cm seeding interval. Nitrogen reserves on the wintering period increased while starch reserves highly decreased in all plots comparing to the before wintering. 'lhe rates of winter survival were 10.2, 20.6 and 37.1%, and regrowth yields were 76, 96 and 178 kgD.M/ IOa, respectively, in the plots of 5, 15 and 25cm seeding interval. These results cleariy showed that seeding density have a close influence on the level of nitrogen and non-structurd cahohydrate reserves, and that the rate of winter survival and regrowth yield were controlled by reserves level on the wintering period.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of dietary cellulose levels on growth, nitrogen utilization, the retention time of diets in the digestive tract, and caecal microflora of 2-month-old Single Comb White Leghorn male chickens fed 3 purified diets that contained 0, 3.5% and 10% cellulose in equal amount of nutrients for 7 days. Body weight gain and nitrogen utilization were significantly higher (p<0.05), while total microflora counts in the caecal contents and retention time of the diet in the digestive tract were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the group fed 3.5% dietary cellulose compared with the group fed 10% dietary cellulose. Body weight gain, nitrogen utilization and retention time of the diet in the digestive tract decreased significantly while the total microflora count in the caecal contents increased significantly in the group fed 10% dietary cellulose compared to the group fed 0% dietary cellulose (p<0.05). Chickens fed 10% dietary cellulose had significantly increased counts of uric acid-degradative bacteria such as Peptococcaceae and Eubacterium, including Peptostreptococcus (p<0.05). The results suggest that cellulose in purified diets is an effective ingredient and the effects on growth, nitrogen utilization, caecal microflora counts and diet retention time in the digestive tract are dependent on the inclusion rate. Positive or negative effects of dietary cellulose are displayed by growth, nitrogen utilization, caecal microflora counts and retention time of the diet in the digestive tract. Positive effects were displayed when the inclusion rate is 3.5% and negative effects were displayed when that is greater than 3.5% of the diet, and the phenomenon is without reference to the age of the chickens.
Nitrogen removal with the combined SHARON (Single reactor system for high ammonium removal over nitrite)ANAMMOX (Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) process using the effluent of ADEPT (Anaerobic digestion elutriated phased treatment) slurry reactor with very low C/N ratio for piggery waste treatment was investigated. For the preceding SHARON reactor, ammonium nitrogen loading and removal rate were $0.97kg\;NH_4-N/m^3_{reactor}/day$ and $0.68kg\;NH_4-N/m^3_{reactor}/day$ respectively. In steady state, bicarbonate alkalinity consumption for ammonium nitrogen converted to $NO_2-N$ or $NO_3-N$ was 8.4 gram per gram ammonium nitrogen. The successive ANAMMOX reactor was fed with the effluent from SHARON reactor. The loading and removal rate of the soluble nitrogen defined as the sum total of $NH_4-N$, $NO_2-N$ and $NO_3-N$ in ANAMMOX reactor were $1.36kg\;soluble\;N/m^3_{reactor}/day$ and $0.7kg\;soluble\;N/m^3_{reactor}/day$, respectively. The average $NO_2-N/NH_4-N$ removal ratio by ANAMMOX was 2.41. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis verified that Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis were dominate, which means that they played an important role of nitrogen removal in ANAMMOX reactor.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of nitrogen removal using autotrophic microorganism in the Membrane-Attached Biofilm Reactor (MABR). The treatment system consists of an aerobic MABR (R1) for nitrification and an anaerobic MABR (R2) for hydrogenotrophic denitrification. Oxygen and hydrogen were supplied through the lumen of hollow-fiber membranes as electron acceptor and donor, respectively. In phase Ι, simultaneous organic carbon removal and nitrification were carried out successfully in R1. In phase II, to develop the biofilm on the hollow-fiber membrane surface and to acclimate the microbial community to autotrophic condition, R1 and R2 were operated independently. The MABRs, R1 and R2 were connected in series continuously in phase III and operated at HRT of 8 hr or 4 hr with $NH_4{^+}-N$ concentration of influent, from 150 to 200 mgN/L. The total nitrogen removal efficiency reached the maximum value of 99% at the volumetric nitrogen loading rate of $1.20kgN/m^3{\cdot}d$ in the combined MABR system with R1 and R2. The results in this study demonstrated that the combined MABR system could operate effectively for the removal of nitrogen in wastewater not containing organic materials and can be used stably as a high rate nitrogen removal technology.

This experiment was carried out to study the effect of pure mineral nitrogen fertilizing on dry matter yield of grassland and the advisable mineral nitrogen amounts in long duration under practical conditions at the "Federal Institute for Agriculture in the Alps" in Austria. The application rates were 0, 30, 60,90 and 120 kg N/ha/cut, the cutting regimes 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-cuts/year. In order to explain the nitrogen-profitability were determined that 1 kg pure mineral nitrogen have to produce 8 - 16 kg DM/kg N in dependence on cutting regimes and requiring of nitrogen efficiencies. The results were as follows: 1. With only PK-fertilizaing average dry matter yields from 4.0 to 7.6 tons per ha and year were obtained. 2. Within all applied cutting regimes 60 kg min. Nlhalgrowth have proved to be the most efficient application rate witn 13 - 24 kg DM/kg N in dependent of cutting regimes. Comapred with only PK-treatment the DM yields increased by 3.9 - 4.7 t/ ha nad year. 3. By the sigmaformed process of Input-Output curve the highest marginal yield (the "most efficient" Ndressing rate) per ha and year was calculated: 152 kg N at 3-cut regimes, 204 kg N at 4-cut regimes, 220 kg N at 5-cut regimes and 240 kg N/ha/year at 6-cut regimes. 4. With required efficiencies of 16 and 12 kg DM/kg N 240 - 300 kg N per ha and year respectively would have to be applied at 3-cut regimes; with required efficiencies of 12 and 10 kg DM/kg N at 4-cut regimes the appropriate figures ranged from 320 to 420 kg N/ha and year, at 5- and 6-cut regimes and efficiencies of 10 and 8 kg DM/kg N results of 360 - 460 kg N and 380 - 500 kg N respectively were obtained. 5. At the relatively dry location Piber the highest dressing rates were needed in order to obtain the efficiencies from 8 to 16 kg DM/kg N, about 30 - 60 kg N/ha/year more than at the relatively moist location Admont.ist location Admont.
