This study has been performed to investigate the effect of Al addition on High Temperature Gas Nitriding (HTGN) in 13%Cr-0.16%C stainless steel with different Al contents of 0.54%, 1.76% and 2.36%, respectively. HTGN treatment was carried out at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, 5 hrs and 10 hrs. Nitrogen-permeated surface layers showed round type carbides of $Cr_{23}C_6$ and needle type nitrides of AlN in the matrix of martensite, representing 600~700 Hv. And the thickness of the surface layer increased with increasing Al content and HTGN treatment time. The inner region that was not permeated nitrogen showed chromium carbides in the mixed phase of martensite and ferrite for the 0.53% Al alloyed steel, however chromium carbides in the matrix of ferrite single phase were shown for the steels with the addition of 1.76%Al and 2.36%Al, representing the hardness of ~200 Hv. During nitrogen permeation from surface to the interior, substitutional elements of Cr, Al and Si moved toward the surface and interstitial element of carbon also moved from interior to the surface. This movement of alloying elements leads high concentration of these elements at the outmost surface, subsequently the lowest peak of substitutional elements were shown in the vicinity of near surface. After showing the lowest peak, the high concentration region of Al and C were formed due to the continuous movement of Al toward the surface. The long discontinuous precipitates of $Cr_{23}C_6$ and AlN were formed along the outmost surface owing to the high concentration of these alloying elements.
This study has investigated the surface phase change, hardness variation, surface precipitates, nitrogen content and corrosion resistance in STS 431 (17Cr-2Ni-0.2C-0.01Nb) martensitic stainless steel after high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) treatment at the temperature range between $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$. The HTGN-treated surface layer appeared $Cr_2N$ of rod type, carbo-nitride of round type and fine precipitates in the austenite matrix. On the other hand the interior region where the nitrogen was not permeated, exhibited martensite phase. The surface hardness showed 250~590 HV, depending on the HTGN treatment conditions, while the interior martensitic phase represented 520 HV. The permeation depth of nitrogen increased with increasing the HTGN-treated temperature. The nitrogen concentration of the surface layer appeared approximately ~0.17% at $1100^{\circ}C$. On comparing the corrosion resistance between solution-annealed and HTGN-treated steels, the corrosion resistance of HTGN-treated steel was superior to that of solution-annealed specimens.
The effect of high temperature gas nitrding (HTGN) on the surface microstructure in pure Ti was investigated. Two phases of TiN and $Ti_2N$ appeared at the outmost surface, and the wide ${\alpha}$-Ti layer was formed at the next layer. On the other hand, the interior region, where the nitrogen was not permeated, exhibited ${\alpha}$'phase. The outmost surface of TiN and $Ti_2N$ showed the maximum hardness of 1000Hv, while the interior ${\alpha}$'phase was ${\sim}350$ Hv. The permeation depth of nitrogen increased with increasing the gas nitriding temperature and time. The nitrogen concentration of the surface layer seems to be over 12.7% at $1100^{\circ}C$.
In this work the preparation and characterization of a membrane containing a uniform mesoporous Titanium oxide top layer on a porous stainless steel substrate has been studied. The 316 L stainless steel substrate was prepared by powder metallurgy technique and modified by soaking-rolling and fast drying method. The mesoporous titania membrane was fabricated via the sol-gel method. Morphological studies were performed on both supported and unsupported membranes using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and field emission scanning microscope (FESEM). The membranes were also characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and $N_2$-adsorption / desorption measurement (BET analyses). It was revealed that a defect-free anatase membrane with a thickness of $1.6{\mu}m$ and 4.3 nm average pore size can be produced. In order to evaluate the performance of the supported membrane, single-gas permeation experiments were carried out at room temperature with nitrogen gas. The permeability coefficient of the fabricated membrane was $4{\times}10^{-8}\;lit\;s^{-1}\;Pa^{-1}\;cm^{-1}$.
${\gamma}-alumina$ membranes were prepared by sol-gel dip coating or pressurized coating of boehmite sols on slipcasted ${\gamma}-alumina$ support tubes. The particle size of sols synthesized via the modified Yoldas-method could be controlled below 5 mn according to the mole ratio of nitric acid/aluminumtri-sec-butoxide (0.07~1.0). The reproducible crack-free composite membranes were produced by the 2nd dip coating or the pressurized coating technique using very stable sols with the particle size of 45 nm. Nitrogen gas permeability through the top-layer in the composite membrane was about $70~55{\times}10^{-7}\;mol/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$. The thermal stability of the top layer was proved to be good enough upto the heat-treatment temperature of $500^{\circ}C$.
The two-step gas nitriding was adopted to increase the depth of surface hardening in 3%Cr-Mo-V steel. The two-step gas nitriding consisted of Step I; $520^{\circ}C{\times}20\;hrs$ and Step II; $550^{\circ}{\times}70\;hrs$. The layer of two-step gas nitriding showed better uniformity and deeper nitriding layer than one-step gas-nitriding layer. The maximum surface hardness showed the value of 850 Hv. The maximum depth of nitrogen permeation showed $750\;{\mu}m$ (350 Hv). X-ray diffraction analysis showed that compound layer was mainly consisted of CrN and $\varepsilon-Fe_3N$ phases. These phases were presumed contributing to surface hardening and wear resistance. However, the corrosion resistance of gas-nitrided Cr-Mo-V steel were not improved in the solution of 1 N HCl and NaOH. Therefore, it is necessary that the continuous study for improvement of corrosion resistance hereafter.
Olefins are industrially important materials used for the synthesis of various petrochemicals. During the polymerization process, unreacted olefin monomers are discharged together with a large amount of nitrogen. For economic benefits, these olefin gases should be efficiently separated from nitrogen. In this study, a poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (PGM) comb-like copolymer was synthesized and 4,4'-diaminoazobenzene (DAAB) was introduced to the copolymer to prepare a cross-linked membrane for C3H6/N2 separation. PGM and DAAB were readily reacted at room temperature through an epoxide-amine reaction without additional thermal treatment. PGM-based membrane, which is a glassy polymer, showed a faster permeation of N2 compared to C3H6. The pristine PGM membrane exhibited the N2 permeability of 0.12 barrer and the high N2/C3H6 selectivity of 32.4. As DAAB was introduced as a cross-linker, the thermal stability of the membrane was significantly improved, which was confirmed by TGA result. The N2/C3H6 selectivity was decreased at 1 wt% of DAAB content, but the N2 permeability increased by approximately 4.7 times. We analyzed N2/C3H6 gas separation properties through a glassy polymer-based membrane, which has not been widely studied. Also, we proposed that thermal stability of the membrane can be greatly improved by the cross-linking method.

In this research, hollow fiber membranes were used in order to investigate to permeation and selectivity of the $CH_4$ and $N_2$. Polyimide and polyethersulfone hollow fiber membrane were prepared by the dry-wet phase inversion method and the module was manufactured by fabricating fibers after surface coating with silicone elastomer. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies showed that the produced fibers typically had an asymmetric structure. The permeance of $CH_4$ and $N_2$ were increased with pressure and temperature. However, the selectivity was decreased with increasing temperature. The permeances of $CH_4$ and $N_2$ were decreased with increasing the air gap and the effect of post-treatment on membrane showed the increase in permeance up to 3.2~7.0 times.
A strain GP32 which produces a highly viscous extracellular polysaccharide was conducted with soil samples and identified as Pseudomonas species. The culture flask conditions for the production of extracellular polysaccharide by Pseudomonas sp. GP32 were investigated. The most suitable carbon and nitrogen source for extracellular polysaccharide production were galactose and (NH4)2SO4. The optimum carbon/nitrogen ratio for the production of extracellular polysaccharide was around 50. The optimum pH and temperature for extracellular polysaccharide production was 7.5 and 32℃, respectively. In batch fermentation using a jar fermentor, the highest extracellular polysaccharide content (15.7 g/l) was obtained after 70 hr of cultivation. The extracellular polysaccharide produced by Pseudomonas sp. GP32 (designated Biopol32) was purified by ethanol precipitation, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) precipitation, and gel permeation chromatography. Biopol32, which has an estimated molecular weight of over 3×107 datons, is a novel polysaccharide derived from sugar components consisting of galactose, glucose, gulcouronic acid and galactouronic acid in an approximate molar ratio of 1.85 : 3.24 : 1.00 : 1.42. The solution of Biopol32 showed non-Newtonian characteristics. The viscosity of Biopol32 exhibited appeared to be higher at all concentration compared to that of zooglan from Zoogloea ramigera. An analysis of the flocculating efficiency of Biopol32 in industry wastewater (food, textile, and paper wastewater) revealed chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction rates 58.4-67.3% and suspended solid (SS) removal rates 82.6-91.3%. Based on these results, Biopol32 is a possible candidate for industrial applications such as wastewater treatment.
