  • Assessing the effect of forest fires and measuring the gas concentration around a fire has received little attention. Therefore, the concentrations of various gases in areas surrounding a fire need to be measured by the development of a suitable device. Unlike conventional portable devices, the AQS (Air Quality System) proposed in this paper is a portable instrument that measures five types of gases simultaneously, including CO, CO2, NOx, VOCs, and NH3, and has high durability through sensor protection algorithms. A PC-based program with an AQS connection was developed to monitor the real-time changes in the gas concentration. The reliability of the developed device was proven through a comparison of the results with other commercial gas analyzers. Measurements of the concentration due to indoor and outdoor fires were performed around a fire area to review the applicability and the predicted results were obtained.

  • In this paper, the fine dust (PM10) and ultrafine dust (PM2.5) measurement platforms are designed to be mobile and fixed using oneM2M, the international standard for IoT. The fine dust measurement platform is composed and designed with a fine dust measurement device, agent, oneM2M platform, oneM2M IPE, and monitoring system. The main difference between mobile and fixed is that the mobile uses the MQTT protocol for interconnection between devices and services without blind spots based on LTE connection, and the fixed uses the LoRaWAN protocol with low power and wide communication range. Not only fine dust, but also temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and noise data related to daily life were collected. The collected sensor values were managed using the common API provided by oneM2M through the agent and oneM2M IPE, and it was designed into four resource types: AE and container. Six functions of operability, flexibility, convenience, safety, reusability, and scalability were analyzed through the fine dust measurement platform design.

  • Recently, drones have been widely used to solve environmental problems such as environmental protection and natural disaster monitoring. This study focuses on the problem of the search altitude of drones when using drones to search for air pollution in order to maintain the urban air environment. In particular, when exploring air pollution in cities using drones, various experiments are conducted to determine the appropriate search altitude for each air pollution source and each communication module. Through the experiment, the maximum measurable altitude for the most common air pollutants, such as CO (carbon monoxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide), O3 (ozone), and P10, P2.5 (fine dust), was identified, and the effective search altitude for each air pollution source was determined. As a result of the experiment, three types of drone search altitudes including legally measurable altitudes were suggested. The communication module measurable altitude was 60m to 120m depending on the communication module, and the effective measurable altitude was analyzed from 10m to 100m.

  • The adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) as a vehicle fuel is a common phenomenon as it is accelerating worldwide. Increasing number of CNG driven vehicles around the world has jumped up from one million in 1996 to five million in 2006. CNG as a vehicle fuel is very popular to the end users because of its clean-burning properties and cost effective solution compared to other alternative fuels like diesel and gasoline. The use of CNG as a fuel reduces vehicular emission that is consisted of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), oxides of nitrogen ($NO_x$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) etc. This research highlights the characteristics of CNG vehicles, CNG arrangement in the vehicles, CNG fueling procedures and most importantly the environmental and economic factors that are highly considered as cost effective solution for the flexibility of using CNG in the automobiles.

  • Waste three-way catalysts were remanufactured by ultrasonic wave treatment followed by active component re-impregnation and the catalytic activities and surface properties of remanufactured catalysts were measured at various remanufacturing conditions. In case of the catalyst prepared by ultrasonic wave cleaning, the optimal period for elimination of surface contaminants from the waste catalyst was found to be about 5 minutes. The proper re-impregnation amounts of the active components for the best catalytic performance were investigated and the catalytic performance tests were also carried out with various temperature for the total hydrocarbon (THC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) conversions. The experimental results showed that the catalytic performances of the remanufactured catalysts were recovered almost the same level as those of the fresh catalyst except those of the NOx conversion.

  • Coal gasification is a process of incomplete coal combustion to produce a syngas composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. It is one of methods to utilize coal cleanly because the process does not emits nitrogen oxides or sulfur oxides and particulate matters. In addition, chemicals can be produced using syngas. Coal gasification is classified as IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle), Plasma coal gasification and UCG (Underground Coal Gasification). Recently, WGS (Water Gas Shift) reactor and carbon capture system have been combined to gasifier to produce hydrogen from coal. In this study, the coal gasification and method of hydrogen production from syngas was summarized, and the hydrogen production from coal gasification project was investigated.

  • Background: Injury is one of the major health problems in South Korea. Few studies have evaluated both intentional and unintentional injury when investigating the association between exposure to air pollutants and injury. Objectives: We aimed to explore the association between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and years of life lost (YLLs) due to injury. Methods: Data on daily YLLs for 2002~2019 were obtained from the the Death Statistics Database of the Korean National Statistical Office. This study estimated short-term exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <10 ㎛ (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 ㎛ (PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3). This time series study was conducted using a generalized additive model (GAM) assuming a Gaussian distribution. We also evaluated a delayed effect of ambient air pollution by constructing a lag structure up to seven days. The best-fitting lag was selected based on smallest generalized cross validation (GCV) value. To explore effect modification by intentionality of injury (i.e., intentional injury [self-harm, assault] and unintentional injury), we conducted stratified subgroup analyses. Additionally, we stratified unintentional injury by mechanism (traffic accident, fall, etc.). Results: During the study period, the average daily YLLs due to injury was 307.5 years. In the intentional injury, YLLs due to self-harm and assault showed positive association with air pollutants. In the unintentional injury, YLLs due to fall, electric current, fire and poisoning showed positive association with air pollutants, whereas YLLs due to traffic accident, mechanical force and drowning/submersion showed negative associations with air pollutants. Conclusions: Injury is recognized as preventable, and effective strategies to create a safe society are important. Therefore, we need to establish strategies to prevent injury and consider air pollutants in this regard.

  • Purpose: The identification and quantification of indoor airborne contaminants, including bio-aerosols, particulates, and gaseous contaminants, are crucial for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality for hospital operating rooms (ORs). Laparoscopic surgery has become widely accepted for various surgical procedures due to its rapid recovery rate and the low risk associated with small incisions compared to conventional open surgery. The objective of this study is to investigate the indoor air quality in hospital ORs and to identify indoor airborne contaminants generated during laparoscopic surgery. Methods: Measurements of an indoor environment, including temperature, humidity and air quality, were performed in an OR before and during a laparoscopic surgery. Indoor airborne contaminants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), suspended indoor particles, and airborne bacteria, were measured simultaneously. Results: The study determined that the concentrations of indoor air particles and airborne bacteria increased during the surgery but were within acceptable levels. However, the concentration of CO2, reached a high level of 1,791 ppm due to the CO2 gas required for maintaining the pneumoperitoneum during the surgery. Implications: The results emphasized the use of ventilation and filtration in a laparoscopic surgery room to lower the concentration of filterable and non-filterable contaminants.

  • As a carbon-free, green growth alternative, internal and external interest in hydrogen energy and technology is growing. Hydrogen was added to co-axial methane, methane-propane, and methane-propane-ethane diffusion flames, which are the main ingredients of LNG, to evaluate its effect on flame formation and combustion products. The variation in combustion products produced by adding hydrogen gradually to diffusion pyrolysis at room temperature and normal pressure conditions was observed experimentally by using a gas analyzer, and the shape of diffusion pyrolysis was observed step by step using a digital camera. The experimental results showed that the production volume of nitrogen oxides tended to increase and became close to linear as hydrogen was added to the diffusion pyrotechnic. This is because the relatively high temperature of heat insulation and fast combustion speed of hydrogen facilitated the production of thermal NOx. On the other hand, CO2 production tended to decrease as hydrogen was added to reduce the overall carbon ratio contained in the mixed diffusion flame of methane, methane-propane, and methane-ethane-propane. This means that the mixed fuel use of LNG-hydrogen in ships may potentially reduce emissions of CO2, a greenhouse gas.
