The vegetation pattern of Mt. Odae based on the soil humidity gradient showed 3 types: (1) the forest of Pinus densiflora under the mesic or xeric conditions of the low altitudinal area, (2) the forest of Acer including A. mono, A. pseudo-sieboldianum and Tilia amurensis under the submesic or subxeric conditions and (3) the forest of Quercus including Q. mongolica of the higher elevational area and Q. variabilis of the lower elevational area under the xeric condition. Water content, organic matter and total nitrogen of soil were relatively low in Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis communities while they were relatively high in Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Quercus mongolica communities. According to the result of cluster analysis based on similarity indices of the communities, the proposed successional sere in the forest vegetation of Mt. Odae was as follows. P. densiflora community $\longrightarrow$ P. densiflore + Q. mongolica community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + A. pseudo-sieboldianum community. P. densiflora community $\longrightarrow$ P. densiflora + Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + A. pseudo-sieboldianum community.
A significant fraction of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus released from sediment are utilized by primary production in the shallow water of coast and lake. The purpose of this study is to introduce the mechanism of nutrients release from sediment and to introduce the methods of the measurement of nutrient released from sediment. One approach is to calculate nutrients released from sediment by a concentration gradient between sediment pore waters and overlying water based on the Fick's law. The other approaches of measurement are the undisturbed sediment core experiments and measurement of nutrient released from sediment by the in situ chamber equipment.
The distribution of plant communities along the Bukhan Riverside in Chun-seong was studied by means of the methods fo Curtis and Pattern. The communities were arranged in a single-dimensioned ordination on the basis of the importance values of the persistent species. Leading dominant species, form the 'low' level to the 'high' levels of the ordination gradient, were Phalaris arundinacea, Salix gilgiana, Artemisia feddei, Zoysia japonica, Pennisetum japonicum, and Arundinella hirta. These species from a continuum from the river to the dry grassland depending upon available soil-moisture. Standing crops in terms of dry weight and the nitrogen content of the above-ground parts of these species showed a good relationship with gradients of available soil-moisture.
This paper is a study of recovery under load process of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). SFCL consists of five parallel-connected high-temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes additionally stabilized by stainless tape. Previously, HTS was heated by current pulse to simulate a short circuit in a power grid. During the cooling period, the current amplitude decreased to 23% or less of HTS critical current value, which is the simulation of network re-switching. When HTS with a polymer coating is cooled, temperature gradient on thermal insulation layer occurs, that prevents a boiling crisis and improves the heat sink into liquid nitrogen. Two samples are coated with a 30 ㎛ and 50 ㎛ polylactide (PLA) layers, reference sample has no polymer coating on it. Samples with a polymer coating show 3-5 times faster cooling than the reference one.
This study was conducted to clarify high yielding factors of F$_1$ hybrids in terms of the growth characteristics, canopy structure, nitrogen content and nitrogen profile in the canopy. Varieties used in this study were four hybrid rices showing different heterosis in grain yield and their parents. Varieties of Japonica were Reimei (maintainer), TP 681 and TP 1278(restorers), and F$_1$ (Reimei ms ${\times}$ TP 681, Reimei ms ${\times}$ TP 1278) hybrid rices. Those of Indica type were 1378 (maintainer), Milyang 46 and Suweon 287(restorers), and F$_1$ (1378 ms ${\times}$ Milyang 46, 1378 ms ${\times}$ Suweon 287) hybrid rices. High heterosis in F$_1$ hybrid rices were shown in panicles per hill and spikelets per panicle, being greatest in spikelets per panicle. Spikelets per square meter expressed even greater heterosis than those two yield components because of multiplicative effect of them. Heterosisof ripened concentration of leaf nitrogen and steeper gradient of leaf nitrogen in canopy strata but also better productive structure in favor of light interception seemed to have led to higher canopy photosynthesis of F$_1$ hybrids and subsequent higher partition of assimilates for leaf area expantion especially during vegetative growth stage. Higher dry matter production, resulting from these factors, during vegetative stage would have contributed to the production of greater number of spikelets per square meter, and consequently to higher grain yield in F$_1$ hybrids.
The aim of this study was to elucidate the changes in the microbial community and biochemical properties of a traditional sweet paste during fermentation. PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis showed that Aspergillus oryzae was the predominant species in the koji (the fungal mixture), and the majority of the fungi isolated belonged to two Zygosaccharomyces species in the mash. The bacterial DGGE profiles revealed the presence of Bacillus subtilis during fermentation, and Lactobacillus acidipiscis, Lactobacillus pubuzihii, Lactobacillus sp., Staphylococcus kloosi, and several uncultured bacteria were also detected in the mash after 14 days of main fermentation. Additionally, during main fermentation, amino-type nitrogen and total acid increased gradually to a maximum of $6.77{\pm}0.25g/kg$ and $19.10{\pm}0.58g/kg$ (30 days) respectively, and the concentration of reducing sugar increased to $337.41{\pm}3.99g/kg$ (7 days). The 180-day fermented sweet paste contained $261.46{\pm}19.49g/kg$ reducing sugar and its pH value remained at around 4.65. This study has used the PCR-DGGE technique to demonstrate the microbial community (including bacteria and fungi) in sweet paste and provides useful information (biochemical properties) about the assessment of the quality of sweet paste throughout fermentation.
The objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the delayed hydride cracking (DHC) of Zr-2.5Nb alloy. The DHC model has some defects: first, it cannot explain why the DHC velocity (DHCV) becomes constant regardless of an applied stress intensity factor, even though the stress gradient is affected by the applied stress intensity factor at the notch tip. Second, it cannot explain why the DHCV has a strong dependence on the method of approaching the test temperature by a cool-down or a heating-up, even under the same stress gradient, and third, it cannot predict any hydride size effect on the DHC velocity. The DHC tests were conducted on Zr-2.5Nb compact tension specimens with the test temperatures reached by a heating-up method and a cool-down method. Crack velocities were measured in hydrided specimens, which were cooled from solution-treatment temperatures at different rates by being furnace-cooled, water-quenched, and liquid nitrogen-quenched. The resulting hydride size, morphology, and distributions were examined by optical metallography. It was found that fast cooling rates, which produce very finely dispersed hydrides, result in higher crack growth rates. This different DHC behavior of the Zr-2.5Nb tube with the cooling rate after a homogenization treatment is due to the precipitation of the $\gamma$-hydrides only in the water-quenched Zr-2.5Nb tube. This experiment will provide supporting evidence that the terminal solid solubility of a dissolution (TSSD) of $\gamma$-hydrides is higher than that of $\delta$-hydrides.
The water quality improvement of golf course ponds, as representative stagnant stream channels, was evaluated by applying a biological activated carbon (BAC) process composed of four consecutive activated carbon reactors. The study was performed from autumn to winter in order to evaluate the feasibility of the BAC process under low temperature conditions. In the study, water quality of pond A (target pond) and pond B (reference pond) were monitored. Pond water was pumped into the BAC process, and was then returned to the pond after treatment. The optimal conditions were determined to be 2 hr of empty bed contact time (EBCT) at a temperature above $4^{\circ}C$, in which improvements of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) of pond A compared to pond B were 3.62%, 3.48% and 1.81%, respectively. On the other hand, as the temperature was below $4^{\circ}C$, some degree of water quality improvement was achieved even when EBCT were 1 or 0.5 hr, suggesting that the BAC process can be successfully applied for the improvement of pond water quality in winter months. The values of biomass concentration and microorganism activity in each condition were highest where 2 hr of EBCT was applied at a temperature above $4^{\circ}C$, but values were similar throughout all treatment conditions, and thus, adsorption is considered to be the dominant factor affecting process efficiency. From the denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis (DGGE) results, no significant differences were observed among the activated carbon reactors, suggesting that the number of reactors in the system could be decreased for a more compact application of the system.
We investigated the possibility of industrial application and economit process of high temperature fermentation by thermotolerant alcohol producing yeasts as previously reported. From the 20% glucose media, the RA-74-2 produced 11.8% (v/v) ethanol at $32^{\circ}C$ (0.5% inoculum) and 10.6% (v/v) ethanol at $40^{\circ}C$ (3% inoculum), respectively. Also, 11.3% (v/v) ethanol was produced for 96 hours in the temperature-gradient fermentation. These results suggest that the RA-74-2 could isuccessfully be applied to save the cooling water and energy in industrial scale without re-investment or modification of established fermentation systems. When potato starch was used as the substrate for the RA-74-2, high temperature fermentation above $40^{\circ}C$ was more appropriate for industrial utilization because organic nitrogen was not necessary to economical fermentation. As the naked barley media just prior to industrial inoculation, taken from the Poongkuk alcohol industry Co., were used, 9.6% (v/v) ethanol was produced at $40^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours in jar-fermentor scale (actually, 9.5-9.8% (v/v) ethanol was produced at 30~$32^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours in industrial scale). The ethanol productivity was increased by the high glucoamylase activity as well as the high metabolic ratio at $40^{\circ}C$ Therefore, if the thermotolerant yeast RA-74-2 would be used in industrial scale, we could obtain a high productivity and saving of the cooling water and energy. Meanwhile, the RA-912 produced 6%(v/v) ethanol in 10% glucose media at $45^{\circ}C$ and showed the less ethanol-tolerance compared with industrial strains. As the produced alcohol was recovered by the vacuum evaporator at $45^{\circ}C$ in 15% glucose media, the final fermentation ratio was enhanced (76% of theoretical yields). This suggest that a hyperproductive process could be achieved by a continuous input of the substrate and continuous recovery of the product under vacuum in high cell-density culture.
We investigated the tritrophic interactions associated with elevation and openness of dwarf bamboo (Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai) vegetation on Mt. Halla, Jeju Island. The interactions between dwarf bamboo plants and its consumers were investigated in four study sites with and without canopy along the elevation gradient. The ecological traits of dwarf bamboo included leaf area, water content, nitrogen content and carbon/nitrogen ratio. Arthropods were collected using a sweeping net and they were later divided into three different feeding guilds: herbivorous, omnivorous and predators. We found that the elevation and canopy openness on dwarf bamboo vegetation was positively related and as elevation increased and canopy opened, the bamboo densities and C/N ratio increased. However, the leaf area, water content and the N content decreased. The study sites with closed canopy indicated a relatively higher species richness of arthropods including insects. We concluded that the tritrophic interactions is closely related to the ecological characteristics of the dwarf bamboos, which is affected by elevation and canopy openness.
