Comparison of a Microbiological Model Simulation with Microcosm Data

  • Using nitrogen as the limiting nutrient, the default version of a microplankton-detritus model linked chlorophyll concentration to the autotroph nitrogen. However, phosphorus dynamics were added to simulate the results of a microcosm experiment. Using standard parameter values with a single value of microheterotroph fraction in the microplankton taken from the observed range, the best simulation successfully captured the main features of the time-courses of chlorophyll and particulate organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, with root-mean-square error equivalent to 29% of particulate concentration. A standard version of microbiological model assumes complete internal cycling of nutrient elements; adding a term for ammonium and phosphate excretion by microheterotrophs did not significantly improve predictions. Relaxing the requirement for constant microheterotroph fraction resulted in an autotroph-heterotroph model AH, with dynamics resembling those of a Lotka-Volterra predator-prey system. AH fitted the microcosm data worse than did MP, justifying the suppression of Lotka-Volterra dynamics in MP. The paper concludes with a discussion of possible reasons for the success of the simple bulk dynamics of MP in simulating microplankton behaviour.

장기 배양법을 이용한 국내 하수처리장 유입 하수의 질소 성상 분석 (Analysis on Nitrogen Faction of Influent Sewage in Domestic STP Based on Long-term Incubation Method)

  • 현재 국내 하수처리장 방류수 질소 수질 기준 개정의 필요성에 대한 의견들이 지속적으로 제안되고 있다. 하지만, 명확한 근거 없이 기준이 강화될 경우 국내 하수처리장에 혼란을 야기할 것이 자명하다. 본 연구에서는 장기 배양법을 기반으로 용량 및 산업단지 연계 처리에 따른 국내 하수의 질소 성상을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 하수처리장에서 처리되기 어려운 질소 성분인 NBDDON는 1.0 ~ 1.9 mg/L 범위를 보였으며, 하수처리장 용량이 적을수록 DON 농도 & NBDDON/DON가 증가하였다. 또한 도시하수를 처리하는 하수처리장보다 산업단지 하수처리장의 NBDDON/DON 비가 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 향 후 국내 하수처리장 방류수 수질 기준 개선을 위한 중요한 기초 자료로 활용될 것이라 전망한다.

Comparisons of In vitro Nitrate Reduction, Methanogenesis, and Fermentation Acid Profile among Rumen Bacterial, Protozoal and Fungal Fractions

  • The objectives were to compare the ability of various rumen microbial fractions to reduce nitrate and to assess the effect of nitrate on in vitro fermentation characteristics. Physical and chemical methods were used to differentiate the rumen microbial population into the following fractions: whole rumen fluid (WRF), protozoa (Pr), bacteria (Ba), and fungi (Fu). The three nitrogen substrate treatments were as follows: no supplemental nitrogen source, nitrate or urea, with the latter two being isonitrogenous additions. The results showed that during 24 h incubation, WRF, Pr and Ba fractions had an ability to reduce nitrate, and the rate of nitrate disappearance for the Pr fraction was similar to the WRF fraction, while the Ba fraction needed an adaptation period of 12 h before rapid nitrate disappearance. The WRF fraction had the greatest methane ($CH_4$) production and the Pr fraction had the greatest prevailing $H_2$ concentration (p<0.05). Compared to the urea treatment, nitrate diminished net gas and $CH_4$ production during incubation (p<0.05), and ammonia-N ($NH_3$-N) concentration (p<0.01). Nitrate also increased acetate, decreased propionate and decreased butyrate molar proportions (p<0.05). The Pr fraction had the highest acetate to propionate ratio (p<0.05). The Pr fraction as well as the Ba fraction appears to have an important role in nitrate reduction. Nitrate did not consistently alter total VFA concentration, but it did shift the VFA profile to higher acetate, lower propionate and lower butyrate molar proportions, consistent with less $CH_4$ production by all microbial fractions.

일본 서남부 가고시마 와카미코 해저 열수환경에서 형성된 2:1 점토광물 내 암모늄 거동 및 질소동위원소 특성 (Ammonium Behavior and Nitrogen Isotope Characteristics of 2:1 Clay Minerals from Submarine Hydrothermal System in the Wakamiko Crater of Kagoshima Bay, Southwestern Japan)

  • 함암모늄 2:1 점토광물 내 암모늄 거동과 질소동위원소 특성을 살펴보기 위해 일본 남서부 해저 와카미코 화구(Wakamiko crater) 내 열수가 분출하는 두 지점에서 퇴적물 코어를 채취하여 스멕타이트로 대표되는 점토입자를 추출하였다. 점토입자 내 무기탄소 제거 후 순차적인 유기물 분해과정에서 감소하는 탄소-질소 비에 근거하여 무기질소 함량을 추정한 결과, 전질소에 대한 무기질소 비율은 SES 지점(Core#1093MG: av. 11.5%)에 비해 SWS 지점 (Core#1094MR: av. 18.2%)에서 높은 경향을 보였다. 후자에서 높은 광물 결정도를 보인 점은 상대적으로 진전된 광물화와 함께 교환성 암모늄이 비교환성 암모늄으로 전환된 결과로 해석된다. 단계적인 점토입자 내 교환성 암모늄의 제거과정에서 나타난 질소동위원소 조성 변화(SES 지점: Core#1093MG: -4.4 ~ +0.2 ‰, av. -2.4 ‰; SWS 지점: Core#1094MR: -0.7 ~ +3.0 ‰, av. +1.5 ‰)로부터 심부 마그마에서 비롯된 열류 및 열수에 의한 국부적인 온도변화는 함암모늄 2:1 점토광물의 형성에 관여한 유체 내 용존 암모늄과 암모니아 사이에서 질소동위원소 분별을 야기했을 것이다.

  • The flammability limit and the flame instability of nitrogen-diluted LPG fuel was experimentally studied on a co-flow flame configuration. The combustion reaction of nitrogen-diluted hydrocarbon with air could be interpreted as the equivalent reaction of pure fuel with nitrogen-diluted air. Nitrogen-diluted LPG with nitrogen up to 90 % of nitrogen mole fraction in fuel, which is close to the flammability limit, could form a co-flow flame. Various parameters such as laminar or turbulent flame, the existence of diffusion flame with pure fuel, air temperature could affect the limit of flame formation.

GLEDITSIAE SPINA 에탄올 추출물 및 분획물이 산화적 스트레스와 human LDL 산화억제에 미치는 영향 (Preventive Effects of GLEDITSIAE SPINA Ethanol Extracts and its Fraction on Oxidative Stress and Human LDL Oxidation)

  • GLEDITSIAE SPINA (GS) has been used as folk remedies traditionally for treatment of antiphlogistic and antifebrile agents. An ethanol extract and its fraction of GS were assessed to determine the mechanism of its antioxidant activity. Also, inhibitory effect of extract from GS and its fraction measuring the inhibitory effect on $Cu^{2+}$-induced human low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. GS ethanol extract and its fraction exhibited a concentration-dependent reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) scavenging activities, including trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), OPPH radical, superoxide anion, hydroxyl radicals, peroxynitrite and nitric oxide, using different assay systems. Furthermore, the GS ethanol extract and its fraction showed dose-dependent protection of LDL oxidation induced by $CuSO_4$. In addition, the GS ethanol extract and its fraction were characterized as containing a high amount of total phenolics. These results suggest that GS ethanol extract and its fraction might be helpful for preventing oxidative stress and protecting LDL oxidation.

  • Austenite precipitation behavior was studied with solidification rates and alloying contents, N and Cr, in duplex stainless steels by directional solidification. Directional solidification experiments were carried out with solidification rates, $1{\sim}100mm/s$, and N and Cr contents, $0{\sim}0.27wt.%,\;25{\sim}28wt.%$ respectively, in a duplex stainless steel, CD4MCU. As the solidification rate increases, the dendrite spacing reduced and the austenite phase in the ferrite matrix became finer. The volume fraction of austenite phase increased and its shape went to be round with increasing nitrogen contents in duplex stainless alloys. The Cr alloying element, even though it is a ferrite former, showed to enhance the nitrogen solubility in the alloy and caused the austenite round and finer. Also, Cr was supposed to decrease the austenite volume fraction, but it increased the austenite slightly due to increasing nitrogen solubility during solidification.

오일-질소가스 혼합유체를 이용한 고온 오일플러싱 시스템 공정설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Process Design of Hot Oil Flushing System Using Oil-Nitrogen Gas Mixing Fluid)

  • 본 연구에서는 해양플랜트설비 건조 현장에서 사용되고 있는 기존 고온 오일 플러싱 장비에 대한 성능개선을 위해 기존의 플러싱 장치에 사용되던 오일에 질소가스를 혼합한 고온 오일 플러싱 시스템에 대하여 국제표준화기구 코드(ISO code)를 기준으로 이론적 연구를 수행하였다. 연구를 위해 오일-질소가스 혼합유체 플러싱 시스템 공정을 설계 후 청정성능에 영향을 주는 혼합유체의 혼합비율, 온도, 레이놀즈수 및 액상분율 등에 대한 공정모사 결과도 분석하였다. 그 결과 관 직경과 가스상의 체적분률이 일정한 상태에서 혼합유체의 체적유량이 증가될수록 수평 유압배관 입출구의 액상분율 차이 ${\Delta}{\alpha}_L$ 값은 증가하게 되고 배관길이 방향의 위치에 따라 오일과 질소가스 기포 사이의 상분포가 달라짐을 확인했다. 이러한 상분포의 변화는 오일-질소가스 혼합유체 플러싱 시스템의 청정성능에도 커다란 영향을 줄 것으로 예상된다.

초고진공 UBM 스퍼터링으로 제조된 라멜라 구조 TaN 박막의 연구 (Lamellar Structured TaN Thin Films by UHV UBM Sputtering)

  • The effect of crystal orientation and microstructure on the mechanical properties of $TaN_x$ was investigated. $TaN_x$ films were grown on $SiO_2$ substrates by ultrahigh vacuum unbalanced magnetron sputter deposition in mixed $Ar/N_2$ discharges at 20 mTorr (2.67 Pa) and at $350^{\circ}C$. Unlike the Ti-N system, in which TiN is the terminal phase, a large number of N-rich phases in the Ta-N system could lead to layers which had nano-sized lamella structure of coherent cubic and hexagonal phases, with a correct choice of nitrogen fraction in the sputtering mixture and ion irradiation energy during growth. The preferred orientations and the micro-structure of $TaN_x$ layers were controlled by varing incident ion energy $E_i\;(=30eV\~50eV)$ and nitrogen fractions $f_{N2}\;(=0.1\~0.15)$. $TaN_x$ layers were grown on (0002)-Ti underlayer as a crystallographic template in order to relieve the stress on the films. The structure of the $TaN_x$ film transformed from Bl-NaCl $\delta-TaN_x$ to lamellar structured Bl-NaCl $\delta-TaN_x$ + hexagonal $\varepsilon-TaN_x$ or Bl-NaCl $\delta-TaN_x$ + hexagonal $\gamma-TaN_x$ with increasing the ion energy at the same nitrogen fraction $f_{N2}$. The hardness of the films also increased by the structural change. At the nitrogen fraction of $0.1\~0.125$, the structure of the $TaN_x$ films was changed from $\delta-TaN_x\;+\;\varepsilon-TaN_x\;to\;\delta-TaN_x\;+\;\gamma-TaN_x$ with increasing the ion energy. However, at the nitrogen fraction of 0.15 the film structure did not change from $\delta-TaN_x\;+\;\varepsilon-TaN_x$ over the whole range of the applied ion energy. The hardness increased significantly from 21.1 GPa to 45.5 GPa with increasing the ion energy.

Optimizing the Performance of Three-Dimensional Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Supercapacitors by Regulating the Nitrogen Doping Concentration

  • Nitrogen-doped graphene was synthesized by a hydrothermal method using graphene oxide (GO) as the raw material, urea as the reducing agent and nitrogen as the dopant. The morphology, structure, composition and electrochemical properties of the samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, electrical conductivity and electrochemical tests. The results show that urea can effectively reduce GO and achieve nitrogen doping under the hydrothermal conditions. By adjusting the mass ratio of raw materials to dopants, the graphene with different nitrogen doping contents can be obtained; the nitrogen content range is from 5.28~6.08% (atomic fraction percentage).When the ratio of dopant to urea is 1:30, the nitrogen doping content reaches a maximum of 6.08%.The supercapacitor performance test shows that the nitrogen content prepared by the ratio of 6.08% is the best at 0.1 A·g-1. The specific capacitance is 95.2 F·g-1.
