  • The effect of heat treatment on torsion characteristics of high nitrogen steel wire has been studied by torsion test, tensile test, specific resistivity, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. After heat treatment at 600∼$700^{\circ}C$, torsion cycle was increased with increasing temperature. Especially, in case of high nitrogen steel wire heat teated at $650^{\circ}C$, torsion cycle was sharply increased. It is estimated that cold worked high nitrogen steel wire started to recrystallize and phase transform at 64$0^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere.

  • The effect of concentration of carbon and nitrogen sources on the sporulation and the life cycles of three strains of Zygosaccharomyces was investigated. The results are as follows: 1) The good sporulation of Zygosaccharomyces bisporus, delbruekii, and Z. steineri was obtained on solid medium containing 0 to 0.001% of nitrogen and 10 to 20% of glucose. The high content of nitrogen was detrimental to sporulation and asci were formed under 0.01% of nitrogen. 2) It is widely accepted that the life cycle of Zygosaccharomyces proceeds in the following way: Ascospore...Vegetative cells...Conjugation of vegetative cells...Sporulation...Ascopores But zygotes of Z. bisporus proceeded to vegetative cells when transfered to the suitable medium for vegetative reproduction, and then formed asci.

  • We developed a simple method to synthesis a nitrogen doped graphene, nitrogen plasma treated graphene (NPG) sheets thought nitrogen plasma etching of graphene oxide (GO). X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) study of NPG sheets treated at various plasma conditions reveal that N-doping is classified to 3 kinds of binding configurations. The nitrogen doping concentration is at least 1.5 at % and up to 3 at% with changing of ratio of nitrogen configuration in NPG. Our group demonstrate ultracapacitor with high capacity and extremely durable using a NPG sheets that are comparable to pristine graphene supercapacitor, and pseudocapacitor using polymer and metal oxide with redox reaction, capacitance that are three-times higher, and a cycle life that are extremely stable. We also realized flexible capacitor by using the paper electrode that are coated by NPG sheets. NPG paper capacitor presented almost same performance compare with NPG on a metal substrate, and durability is much more enhanced than that. To additionally explain that how different kind of atoms in graphene layers can act as the ion absorption sites, we simulated the binding energy between nitrogen in graphene layer and ions in electrolyte. Increasing the energy density and long cycle life of ultracapacitor will enable them to compete with batteries and conventional capacitors in number of applications.

  • In this study, we investigated the variations of the kinetic coefficients and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), N and P mass used for assimilation of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system with the variation of SRTs; SRTs of 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, 15.0 and 20.0 days were tested in one cycle of SBR operation to determine the optimum conditions for the operation of the SBR and estimate its COD, nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies. The SBR system was operated under the conditions as follows: an operation time of 6 hours per cycle, a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 hours, an influent COD loading of $0.4kg/m^3/day$, and an influent nitrogen loading of $0.068kgT-N/m^3/day$. The yield coefficient (Y) and decay rate coefficient ($k_d$) were estimated to be 0.4198 kgMLVSS/kgCOD and $0.0107day^{-1}$ by calculating the removal rate of substrate according to the variation of SRT. Considering total nitrogen amount removed by sludge waste process, eliminated by denitrification, and in clarified water effluent with reference to 150 mg/cycle of influent nitrogen amount, the percentage of nitrogen mass balance from the ratio of the nitrogen amount in effluent (N output) to that in influent (N input) for Runs 1~5 were 95.5, 97.0, 95.5, 99.5, and 95.5%, respectively, which is well accounted for, with mass balances close to 100%.

  • Most of the ethyl alcohol consumed by humans is oxidized to acetaldehyde in the liver by the cytoplasmic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) system. For this ADH-catalyzed oxidation of alcohol, $NAD^+$ is required as the coenzyme and $NAD^+$becomes reduced to NADH. As the $NAD^+$becomes depleted and NADH accumulates, alcohol oxidation is reduced. For continued alcohol oxidation, the accumulated NADH must be quickly reoxidized to $NAD^+$, and it is this reoxidation of NADH to $NAD^+$that is known to be the rate-limiting step in the overall oxidation rate of alcohol The reoxidation of NADH to $NAD^+$is catalyzed by lactate dehydrogenase in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes, with pyruvate being utilized as the substrate. The pyruvate may be supplied from alanine as a result of amino acid metabolism via the urea cycle. Also, glutamine is thought to help with the supply of pyruvate indirectly, and to activate the urea cycle by producing $NH_3$. Thus, in the present study, we have examined the effects of alanine and glutamine on the alcohol oxidation rate. We utilized isolated perfused liver tissue in a system where media containing alanine and glutamine was circulated. Our results showed that when alanine (5.0mM) was added to the glucose-free infusion media, the alcohol oxidation rate was increased by 130%. Furthermore, when both glutamine and alanine were added together to the infusion media, the alcohol oxidation rate increased by as much as 190%, and the rate of urea nitrogen production increased by up to 200%. The addition of glutamine (5.0mM) alone to the infusion media did not accelerate the alcohol oxidation rate. The increases in the rates of alcohol oxidation and urea nitrogen production through the addition of alanine and glutamine indicate that these amino acids have contributed to the enhanced supply of pyruvate through the urea cycle. Based on these results, it is concluded that the dietary supplementation of alanine and glutamine could contribute to increased alcohol detoxification through the urea cycle, by enhancing the supply of pyruvate and $NAD^+$to ensure accelerated rates of alcohol oxidation.

  • The objective of this study was to establish the optimal system operating strategies for nitrogen and phosphorus removal through model simulation system built for advanced wastewater treatment targeting on simultaneous temporal/special phase isolation BNR process. The simulation system was built with unit process modules using object modules in GPS-X code. The system was well verified by field experiment data. Simulation study was carried out to investigate performance response to design and operation parameters, i.e. hydraulic retention time (HRT), solids retention time (SRT), and cycle time. The process operated at HRTs of 10~15 hours, longer SRTs, and cycle time of 2 hours showed optimal removal of nitrogen. The HRTs of 10~15 hours, SRTs of 20~25 days, and longer cycle time was optimal for phosphorus removal. Both simulation and field studies showed that optimal operating strategies satisfying both the best nitrogen and phosphorus removals include HRTs ranged 10~15 hours, SRTs ranged 20~25 days, and cycle times of 4~8 hours. The simulation system with modularization of generalized components in BNR processes was, therefore, believed to be a powerful tool for establishing optimal strategies of advanced wastewater treatment.

  • The duck-rice forming system is increasingly spread up throughout Korea since 1992. It is discussed the rice field, rice quality, weed and pest management in the duck-rice weeding system compared to conventional farming system. Moreover the optimizing duck population, system management and fertilizer application rate were reported. Energy input and output by duck-rice farming system were carefully compared with those of low input sustainable paddy field and conventional farming paddy field. To find out the environmentally sound function of duck-rice system, the total nitrogen in paddy soil and paddy water, and nitrogen cycle in paddy rice cultivation system were analysed. finally the input and output were calculated, and ecological characteristic were determined in terms of nitrogen balance, labor input, animal input, renewable energy input, turnover of soil organic matter, energy loss, non-renewable indirect and direct energy input. It was concluded duck-rice weeding system could be recommended in terms of net only environmentally sound, but also farmer's income. But there are still some research needs for successful adaption of duck-rice farming to investigate to determine the optimal population of duck in rice paddy field unit, release time of duckling, duck management after release, and strategy for duck marketing and duck processing.

  • Variation of HAZ toughness of Ti-containing steel with nitrogen content was investigated and interpreted in terms of its microstructure and the amount of soluble nitrogen present. The amounts of Ti and Al combined in TiN and AlN, respectively, in HAZ at $1400^{\circ}C$ peak temperature were less than those in base plate; 55~88% in TiN and 21~28% in AlN, indicating the dissolution of nitrifies in HAZ. The calculated amounts of soluble nitrogen using the thermodynamic analysis showed a good agreement with the measured values in other experiment. Therefore, the analysis can be used to estimate the amount of soluble nitrogen in HAZ. Simulated HAZ toughness was influenced not only by its microstructure but also by the amount of soluble nitrogen present after the formation of BN during the cooling cycle of welding. It showed maximum value when the nitrogen content is in stoichiometric ratio with titanium content, showing that soluble nitrogen in HAZ is detrimental to its toughness.
