Performance of MPS Bacterial Inoculation in Two Consecutive Growth of Maize Plants

  • Two successive in vitro experiments were carried out to examine the effect of MPS bacterial inoculation on growth, and nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation of maize plants under greenhouse condition in the same soil. There were four treatments, uninoculated control and three phosphate solubilizing bacterial inoculations, viz., Pseudomonas striata, Burkholderia cepacia and Serratia marcescens. The inoculated plants showed the higher plant height, total dry mass, nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation when compared to uninoculated control plants in both experiments. In the combined data analysis from two experiments, the plants inoculated with P. striata and B. cepacia showed significantly higher plant height, total dry mass and P accumulation when compared to S. marcescens inoculated plant and uninoculated control plants. The P. striata and B. cepacia inoculation enhanced total dry matter accumulation by 14% and phosphorus accumulation by 25% over the uninoculated control plants. The nitrogen and phosphorus concentration of maize plants were also increased due to MPS bacterial inoculation, however, the effect was not significant.

Influence of the Novel Urease Inhibitor Hydroquinone on Growing Lamb Nitrogen Utilization

  • Two in vivo experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of novel urease inhibitor hydroquinone (HQ) on ammonia release rate from urea hydrolysis, nitrogen balance, nutrient digestibility and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis. In Exp. 1, twelve crossbred cannulated lambs were randomly assigned within initial body weight block to one of four HQ treatments, which included 0 (control), 30, 60 or 80 mg HQ/kg DM intake. Ammonia concentration and pH of ruminal fluid were immediately measured at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after feeding. Increasing the dose of HQ tended (p<0.15) to linearly decrease NH3 formation. The ammonia peak concentration (2 h post-feeding) in animals receiving HQ was approximately one-half of that in animals not receiving HQ (p<0.01), and a relatively sustained ammonia release could be obtained at the dose of 30 or 60 mg HQ/kg DM. In Exp. 2, sixteen intact crossbred lambs (weight $40{\pm}0.8kg$) were used in a $2{\times}2$ factorial design experiment. The four rations consisting of soybean meal-based (SBM) or urea-based (Urea) nitrogen source with or without HQ (S1, S0, U1 and U0) were fed in digestion and N balance trials. Apparent digestibility of major nutrients except that of ADF was not affected by either nitrogen source or addition of HQ. Regardless of nitrogen source, supplementation of HQ significantly improved ADF digestibility (p<0.05). The various ration had no effects on N metabolism in the presence of HQ. There was significant difference between total purine derivatives (PD), estimated efficiency of microbial N synthesis (p<0.05) and urea-N excretion (p<0.01) in the urine for the SBM ration and for the Urea ration. However, HQ had little influence on efficiency of microbial N synthesis as proportion of daily intake of total tract digestible OM (p>0.05). No interactions between main nitrogen source and HQ were measured throughout the trial. Results of this study suggest that addition of HQ to ration may improve ADF digestion with having no negative effect on N metabolism and microbial protein production.

간략화된 활성슬러지 모델(ASM No. 1)을 이용한 유출수 중 암모니아성 질소의 제어에 관한 연구 (Control of $NH_4-N$ in Wastewater Treatment Effluent According to Simplified ASM No. 1)

  • 하폐수 처리에 대한 제어는 2가지의 장점을 가지고 있다. 유출수의 수질을 제어할 수 있다는 것과 하폐수 처리 비용의 절감이 그것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 부영양화의 원인물질로 잘 알려져 있는 암모니아성 질소를 제어함을 목적으로 한다. 제어는 간략화된 활성슬러지 모델 1(ASM No. 1)에 기초하고 있으며, 제어 방법은 다음과 같다. 우선, 유입수중 암모늄 농도를 측정하고, 간략화된 활성슬러지 모델 1(ASM No. 1)에 의하여 유출수 암모늄 농도가 1.0 mg/L가 아닐 경우 유출수의 암모늄 농도가 1.0 mg/L가 되도록 최적의 포기 시간을 산정하고 결정한다. 다음단계에서 유입수의 암모늄 농도를 교정한다. 이 과정은 계속적으로 반복되었다. 이와같은 방법에 의해 호기-무산소 조건을 반복하는 SBR 반응조가 한달간 제어되었다. 다음과 같은 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 유출수의 암모늄 농도는 $0.22\sim3.1$ mg/L 범위를 순회하였으며, 유출수 암모늄 농도의 평균값은 1.1 mg/L이었다. 본 연구에서 사용된 Adaptive control 방법은 암모늄의 유출수 농도를 제어하고 예측하는데 매우 효과적이었다.

  • The present study has been conducted to analytically investigate the thermal control performance of variable conductance heat pipe(YCHP) with axial grooves. The condenser port of the YCHP is occupied by a inert gas in which the concentration of gas is varied with the operation temperature and the heat transport capacity is thus varied with the operating temperature due to the variation of inert gas concentration. In this study, numerical evaluation for the thermal control of the YCHP with axial grooves is made from the 1st order diffusion model that considers the diffusive expansion of inert gas by concentration gradient. Ammonia is used as a working fluid and Nitrogen as a control gas in the Aluminum tube. As a result, the thermal performance of YCHP based on diffusion model has been compared with that of YCHP from flat front model. Additionally, it is found that the concentration of inert gas is distributed in the condenser region of YCHP with axial grooves.

Enhanced nitrogen removal from high-strength ammonia containing wastewater using a membrane aerated bioreactor (MABR)

  • This study evaluated the performance of a membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) for nitrogen removal from a high-strength ammonia nitrogen-containing wastewater. The experimental setup consisted of four compartments that are sequentially anaerobic and aerobic to achieve complete nitrogen removal. The last compartment of the reactor setup contained a membrane bioreactor (MBR) to reduce sludge production in the system and to obtain a better-quality effluent. Continuous experiment over a period of 47 days showed that MABR exhibited excellent NH4+-N removal efficiency (99.5%) compared to the control setup without MABR (56.5%). The final effluent NH4+-N concentration obtained in the MABR was 2.99±1.56 mg/L. In contrast to NH4+-N removal, comparable TOC removal values in the MABR and the control reactor (99.2% and 99.3%, respectively) showed that air supply through MABR is much more critical for denitrification than for organic removal. Further study to understand the effect of air supply rate and holding pressure on NH4+-N removal in MABR revealed that an increase in both these parameters positively impacted reactor performance. These parameters are related to oxygen supply to the biofilm formed over the membrane surface, which in turn influenced NH4+-N removal in MABR. Among the two different strategies to control biofilm over the membrane surface, results showed that scouring for a duration of 10 min on a weekly basis, along with mixing air supply, could be an effective method.

  • 질소 고정능이 있는 Nostoc pruniforme를 재료로, 3종의 유기물, glucose, oxalic, 및 ethanol을 N-free medium과 NO$^{[-993]}$ riched medium에 처리해 주었을 때 다음과 같은 효과를 얻었다. 1)N-free medium과 NO$^{[-993]}$ riched medium에서 위의 유기물 모두가 질소 고정과정의 energy원으로서 또는 substrate로서의 유효한 결과를 얻었다. 3)oxalic acid를 처리한 실험에서는NO$^{[-993]}$ richedmedium의 경우 고농도 처리구에서 질소고정량이 많았고 N-free medium은 그 반대의 결과였다. 4)비교구인 control의 질소 고정량은 일예를 제회하고는 전반적으로 고농도 처리구와 저농도 처리구의 중간에 위치했다.

Effect of feeding garlic leaves on rumen fermentation, methane emission, plasma glucose kinetics, and nitrogen utilization in sheep

  • Background: Garlic and its constituents are reported to have been effective in reducing methane emission and also influence glucose metabolism in body; however, studies in ruminants using garlic leaves are scarce. Garlic leaves contain similar compounds as garlic bulbs, but are discarded in field after garlic bulb harvest. We speculate that feeding garlic leaves might show similar effect as garlic constituents in sheep and could be potential animal feed supplement. Thus, we examined the effect of freeze dried garlic leaves (FDGL) on rumen fermentation, methane emission, plasma glucose kinetics and nitrogen utilization in sheep. Methods: Six sheep were fed Control diet (mixed hay and concentrate (60:40)) or FDGL diet (Control diet supplemented with FDGL at 2.5 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$ of sheep) using a crossover design. Methane gas emission was measured using open-circuit respiratory chamber. Plasma glucose turnover rate was measured using isotope dilution technique of [$U-^{13}C$]glucose. Rumen fluid, feces and urine were collected to measure rumen fermentation characteristics and nitrogen utilization. Result: No significant difference in rumen fermentation parameters was noticed except for rumen ammonia tended to be higher (0.05 < P < 0.1) in FDGL diet. Methane emission per kg dry matter ingested and methane emission per kg dry matter digested were lower (P < 0.05) in FDGL diet. Plasma glucose concentration was similar between diets and plasma glucose turnover rate tended to be higher in FDGL diet (0.05 < P < 0.1). Nitrogen retention was higher (P < 0.05) and microbial nitrogen supply tended to be higher (0.05 < P < 0.1) in FDGL diet. Conclusion: FDGL diet did not impair rumen fermentation, improved nitrogen retention; while absence of significant results in reduction of methane emission, glucose turnover rate and microbial nitrogen supply, further studies at higher dose would be necessary to conclude the merit of FDGL as supplement in ruminant feedstuff.

Aureobasidium pullulans에 의한 플루란 생산에서 pH와 질소원의 영향 (Effects of pH and Nitrogen sources on the Pullulan Production by Aureobasidium pullulans)

  • 본 연구에서는 질소원의 종류와 농도 그리고 pH가 플루란 생산에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. A Aureobasidium pullulans에 의한 플루란 생산시 가장 좋은 질소원으로는 수율 62%를 얻은 peptone 이었고, 최적 질소원 농도는 유기질소원의 경우 탄 소원/질소의 비가 50j0.15N이었고 그 이상에서는 저해가 일어났다. 훈합질소원 I, II, III을 사용하 였을 때 각각 29.1, 27.4, 26.5g/L의 플루란 생산량 을 보였다. 그러므로, 혼합 질소원을 잘 이용하면 플 루란을 효과적으로 생산할 수 있었다. pH를 조절하 지 않을 때가 pH를 일정하게 할 때보다는 플루란 수율이 높았다. 또, 유가식배양시 탄소원과 질소원을 함께 공급하였을 때가 질소원만을 공급하였을 때 더 큰 플루란 수율을 보였다.

중앙차선 버스 정류장과 주변지역의 대기오염 특성 비교 (Comparison of Air Pollution Characteristics in the Center Lane-Bus Stop and the Surrounding Areas)

  • The use of bus stop in the center lane has reduced the emissions of exhaust gas on the road due to the improvement of the traffic speed but has caused a health problem for the citizens who are waiting for the bus in the platform, and thus the air pollution control of bus stop in the center lane is emerging as a more important part. This study was conducted to investigate the air pollution degree for the center lane-bus stops in four regions using mobile air measuring vehicle, and to evaluate the characteristics of air pollution by comparing with the data measured at the urban air monitoring site close to the bus stops. In addition, the correlation analysis was performed to analyze the impact to neighboring region by vehicle exhaust gas. The regional mean concentration of nitrogen dioxide in the center lane-bus stops ranged from 0.025 to 0.043 ppm which shows from 2.5 times to 5.3 times higher than the values of urban air monitoring site selected as a control group. The regional mean concentration of ozone in the center lane-bus stops ranged from 0.023 to 0.034 ppm which shows from 3% to 28% lower than the values of urban air monitoring site selected as a control group. The concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and ozone for the sampling regions did not exceed one hour-air quality environmental standard (0.1 ppm). The mean concentration of particulate matter for four center lane-bus stops was $28{\mu}g/m^3$ which shows about 27% higher than the values of urban air monitoring site selected as a control group, and that of particulate matter did not exceed one day-air quality environmental standard ($100{\mu}g/m^3$). In the results of correlation analysis between data from center lane-bus stops and data from urban air monitoring sites, the correlation coefficient (r) of nitrogen dioxide was relatively low as 0.316 to 0.416, and the correlation coefficient was high as the distance was close and vice versa. However, the correlation coefficient of ozone ranged from 0.167 to 0.658 and the correlation coefficient was high as the distance was far and vice versa.

알케인계 단일 연료 액적의 Soot 생성 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Soot Formation Characteristics of Alkane-based Single Fuel Droplet)

  • The soot formation characteristics of various alkane-based single fuel droplets were studied in this work. Also, This study was performed to provide the database of the soot behavior and formation of alkane-based single fuel droplet. The experimental conditions were set to 1.0 atm of ambient pressure ($P_{amb}$), 21% of oxygen concentration ($O_2$) and 79% of nitrogen concentration ($N_2$). Combustion and soot formation of single fuel droplet was visualized by visualization system with high speed camera. At the same time, ambient pressure, oxygen concentration and nitrogen concentration were maintained by ambient condition control system. Soot formation characteristics was analyzed and compared on the basis of intensity ratio ($I/I_0$) of background image. The results of toluene fuel droplet showed the largest soot generation. Soot volume fraction ($f_v$) was almost the same under the identical fuel types regardless of various initial droplet diameter ($d_0$) since thermophoretic flux was not much changed under the same ambient conditions.
