The present study was carried out to evaluate the chemical properties of soil in relation to forest structure and composition at different altitudes (900-2,600 m asl) in a part of Western Himalaya. The composite soil samples were taken from three (viz. upper, middle and lower) depths. The soils of the whole study area were acidic in nature (pH=4.90-5.51). Contents of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Carbon (C) and soil organic matter (SOM) showed much fluctuation during different seasons of year. Nitrogen content showed significant positive correlations with altitude (r=0.924, p<0.05) and different community parameters like species diversity (r=0.892, p<0.01) and species richness (r=0.941, p<0.05). Phosphorus exhibited direct correlations with carbon (r=0.637) while weak negative correlations with different community parameters like species richness & diversity, total basal cover (TBC), density and canopy cover. Carbon content and hence SOM showed direct correlations with Nitrogen (r=0.821, p<0.01); Phosphorus (r=0.637, ns) and Potassium (r=0.540, ns). But no significant relationship was observed between K content and species richness (p=0.30, r=-0.504); between K content and species diversity (p=0.14, r=-0.672); between P content and species diversity (p=0.29, r=-0.513) and species richness (p=0.23, r=-0.575). Among the different soil nutrients, only N showed a significant positive correlation with altitude while all others exhibited negative (but non-significant) correlation with it. The study revealed that the chemical properties affect and are reciprocally affected by forest structure and composition and that N rich soils of higher altitudes are best for the growth and development of forests.
Fish meal grades SL1 and SL2 from Sardine (Sardinella longiceps) and NJ from Pink Perch (Nemipterus japonicas) were evaluated as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen in the medium for alkaline protease production by Bacillus pumilus MTCC 7514. The analysis of the fish meal suggests that the carbon and nitrogen contents in fish meal are sufficient to justify its choice as replacement for other nutrients. Protease production increased significantly (4,914 U/ml) in medium containing only fish meal, compared with the basal medium (2,646 U/ml). However, the elimination of inorganic salts from media reduced the protease productivity. In addition, all the three grades of fish meal yielded almost the same amounts of protease when employed as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Nevertheless, the best results were observed in fish meal SL1 medium. Furthermore, protease production was enhanced to 6,966 U/ml and 7,047 U/ml on scaling up from flask (4,914 U/ml) to 3.7 and 20 L fermenters, respectively, using fish meal (10 g/l). Similarly, the corresponding improvement in productivities over flask (102.38 U/ml/h) was 193.5 and 195.75 U/ml/h in 3.7 and 20 L fermenters, respectively. The crude protease was found to have dehairing ability in leather processing, which is bound to have great environmental benefits.
The biodegradation experiment, the TOD analysis and the element analysis for dispersant, Bunker-A oil and Bunker-B oil were conducted to study the biodegradation characteristics of a mixture of Bunker-A oil with dispersant and a mixture of Bunker-B oil with dispersant in the seawater. The results of biodegradation experiment showed 1mg of dispersant to be equivalent to 0.26 mg of $BOD_5$ and to 0.60 mg of $BOD_{20}$ in the natural seawater. The results of TOD analysis showed each 1 mg of dispersant, Bunker-A oil and Bunker-B oil to be equivalent to 2.37 mg, 2.94 mg and 2.74 mg of TOD, respectively. The results of element analysis showed carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphorus contents of dispersant to be $82.1\%,\;13.8\%,\;1.8\%\;and\;2.2\%$, respectively. Carbon and hydrogen contents of Bunker-A oil were found to be $73.3\%\;and\;13.5\%$, respectively, and carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of Bunker-B oil to be $80.4\%,\;12.3\%\;and\;0.7\%$, respectively. Accordingly, the detection of nitrogen and phosphorus in dispersant shows that dispersants should be used with caution in coastal waters, with relation to eutrophication. The biodegradability of dispersant expressed as the ratio of $BOD_5/TOD$ was found to be $11.0\%$. As the mix ratios of dispersant to Bunker-A oil (3 mg/l) and a mixture of Bunker-B oil (3mg/l) were changed from 1 : 10 to 5 : 10, the biodegradabilities of a mixture of Bunker-A oil with dispersant and Bunker-B oil with dispersant increased from $2.1\%\;to\;7.2\%$ and from $1.0\%\;to\;4.4\%$, respectively. Accordingly, the dispersant belongs to the organic matter group of middle-biodegradability while mixtures in the mix ratio range of $1:10\~5:10$ belong to the organic matter group of low-biodegradability. The deoxygenation rate constant $(K_1)$ and ultimate biochemical oxygen demand $(L_0)$ obtained from the biodegradation experiment and Thomas slope method were found to be 0.125/day and 2.487 mg/l for dispersant (4 mg/l), respectively. $K_1\;and\;L_0$, were found to be $0.079\~0.131/day$ and $0.318\~2.052\;mg/l$ for a mixture of Bunker-A oil with dispersant and to be $0.106\~0.371/day$ and $0.262\~1.106\;mg/l$ for a mixture of Bunker-B oil with dispersant, respectively, having $1:10\~5:10$ mix ratios of dispersant to Bunker-A oil and Bunker-B oil. The ultimate biochemical oxygen demands of the mixtures increased as the mix ratio of dispersant to Bunker-A, B oils changed from 1 : 10 to 5 : 10. This suggests that the more dispersants are applied to the sea for the cleanup of Bunker-A oil or Bunker-B oil, the more decreases the dissolved oxygen level in the seawater.
We examined the chemical properties of mixed media and the yield of Pleurotus pulmonarius using bag culture (1 kg) and also evaluated their relationship. The yield of mushrooms in the first flush appeared to be correlated with total nitrogen content. The highest yield of mushroom in the first flush occurred when the nitrogen content of the media was 1.12 %; however, when the nitrogen content was lower or higher than 1.1 %, the yield decreased. The yield of mushrooms in the second flush was highly correlated with various chemical properties including total nitrogen, total carbon, and C/N ratio; for example, higher nitrogen and carbon content produced a higher yield in the second flush. Therefore, when cultivating bottle culture, the nitrogen content of the media should be approximately 1.1 %, such that most mushrooms are harvested in the first flush. Additionally, when cultivating bag culture for harvesting two or more times, it is advantageous to have higher nitrogen and carbon contents in the media than the amount required for bottle culture media.
Basic informations for direct somatic embryo formation in Rehmannja glutinosa Lib. were obtained in 500ml erlenmyer flask. The ratio of ammonium to nitrate nitrogen of 825(mg/l) : 1900(mg/l) was proper condition for somatic embryo formation from stem and petiole explants and 3% sucrose was the most effective carbon source. Full strength MS medium with 2mg/l BA was better than LS medium for somatic embryogenesis. The initial pH 5.7 of medium(full strength MS with 2.0mg/l BA and 0.1mg/l NAA) was good for embryo production. Potassium ion was taken up rapidly within 2 weeks. while $Ca^{++}$ and $Mg^{++}$ ion contents were almost constant during culture period. Sucrose hydrolysis occurred throughout the culture, while glucose and fructose were absorbed simultaneously from the third week of culture.
Effects of resin contents, number of carbonization, graphitization, sliding speed, and oxidation on friction and wear behavior of carbon/carbon composite materials were investigated. Friction and wear tests were carried out under various sliding conditions. An experimental setup was designed and built in the laboratory. Stainless steel disks were used as the counterface material. Friction coefficient, emperature, and wear factor were measured with a data acquisition system. Wear surfaces were observed by the scanning electron microscope. It has been shown that the average friction coefficient was increased with the sliding speed in the range of 1.43~6.10 m/s, but it as decreased in the range of 6.10~17.35 m/s. Specimens prepared by different numbers of carbonization. showed variations in friction coefficient and friction coefficient of the graphitized specimen was the highest. Friction coefficients depended on contribution of the plowing and adhesive components. As the number of carbonization was increased, wear factor was reduced. Wear factor of the graphitized specimens dropped further. In the case of graphitized specimens, sliding speed had a large influence on wear behavior. When the tribological experiments were conducted in nitrogen atmosphere, the wear factor was decreased to two thirds of the wear factor obtained in air. It is obvious that the difference was affected by oxidation. Results of friction and wear tests were applied to a neural network system based on the backpropagation algorithm. A neural network may be a valuable tool for prediction of tribological behavior of the carbon/carbon composite material if ample data are present.
The object of this study was to analyze influence which Black locust afforestation affected to soil, to research change of soil environment of Black locust planted stand and adjacent stands through comparative analyzing physichemical property of soil of them. It was investigated that the soil texture of Black locust planted stand and the adjacent stands was mostly SL. and LS. According to this result I could know that transformation of soil texture by vegetation easily happened because transformation soil texture results from the parent rock. I could ascertain that difference existed between Black locust planted stand and the other stands in soil pH and Carbon content of planted stand of Black locust pH, contents of Available $P_2O_5$ Carbon, Total Nitrogen. In other words, pH and Carbon content of Black locust planted stand were lower than that of Oak forest, higher than that of Pine forest. These results showed that Black locust was which fix nitrogen. I could infer that Black locust afforestation made forest soil fertilized. In soil of Black locust planted stand and the adjacent stands, statistical value appeared highly in pH and existed in content of Carbon, Total nitrogen, too. And high interrelationship appeared in the order of pH, C/N Ratio, CEC, Total nitrogen content was in each stands. I suppose that the trespassing extent of Black locust to Oak forest and Pine forest which are adjacent to planted stand of Black locust is different because of low pH, lackness of Available $P_2O_5$ Carbon, and what not.

High-performance of an electric double layer capacitance (EDLC) electrode was prepared by the amino-fluorination of activated carbon by using $NF_3$ gas. The pore structure and surface chemistry were investigated based on the specific capacitance of EDLC. The amino-fluorination of activated carbon introduced functional groups of nitrogen and fluorine which are beneficial for the specific capacitance of EDLC without the change of pore structures. The E-NF100AC electrode, which has nitrogen and fluorine functional groups less than 1 at%, showed the highly improved specific capacitance of 528 (${\pm}9$) F/g at 2 mV/s showing 122% improved value when comparing with that of non-functionalized E-RAC electrodes. Whereas, the E-NF200AC electrode, which has nitrogen and fluorine functional groups over 1 at%, showed the decreased specific capacitance because of perfluorinated introduction. So, it is concluded that the proper contents of nitrogen and fluorine groups improved the specific capacitance of EDLC.

This is the research to prepare a purification program for relatively less polluted stream by using phytoremediation. We calculated a treatment amount of nutrients followed by growth of Helianthus annuus (a kind of sunflower), setting up the plant reactor in the hothouse. Moreover, to investigate a field applicability, we could find increased contents of nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen in plants by setting up a H. annuus planted artificial floating island in an irrigation canal. When we changed the dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN) concentration of the influent from 28.5 to 199.2 mg/l and the dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP) concentration of the influent from 13.3 to 25.4 mg/l, growth disorder has not appeared though it is much higher than the criterion of water for irrigation. In this case, the removal rate of DIN was $81.7\sim98.6%$, and that of DIP was $81.9\sim98.4%$ in 3 days stay on average. It has appeared that the efficient hydraulic retention time(HRT) was 48 hours. The following contents of nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen of H. annuus appeared in the artificial floating island: nitrogen was $3.2\sim7.8%$ in the trunk and $3.0\sim6.3%$ in the root. Carbon was $40.1\sim57.7%$ in the trunk and $43.4\sim53.8%$ in the root.
To evaluate the primary production and nutrient uptake of macrophytes in Lake Paldang, this study investigate the vegetation areas of six dominant aquatic plants including Typha angustifolia, Zizania latifolia, Phragmites australis, Trapa japonica, Nelumbo nucifera and Savinia natans, and contents of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus of each macrophyte. Total vegetation area of six dominant aquatic plants was 1.37 $km^2$. Among them, Typha angustifolia was the most wide-distributed species which occupied the 46.7% of total vegetation area. Littoral zone of South Han river had the largest vegetation area with 0.458 $km^2$, and North Han river, Kyungan river and confluence area in the order named. The results of the contents of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus of macrophytes showed that the carbon contents of emergent macrophytes was higher than that of other life-forms. The nitrogen content of Salvinia natans, free-floating macrophyte was highest and that of Typha angustifolia, emergent macrophyte was lowest. The phosphorus content of Trapa japonica showed the highest content of phosphorus among six macrophytes and emergent macrophytes such as Zizania latifolia and Phragmites australis showed lower contents of phosphorus than other life-forms. The annual net primary production of macrophytes in Lake Paldang, 2004, was calculated as 758.4 ton C $yr^{-1}$ and the annual net nitrogen and phosphorus uptake of macrophyte was 16,921 kg $yr^{-1}$ and 1,841.0 kg P $yr^{-1}$ respectively. Comparing the total budget of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in Lake Paldang, the amount of primary production and nutrient uptake by macrophytes take a small portion in total budget implying macrophytes do not play an important role in budget of matters in river-type lake, Lake Paldang.
