  • The interaction of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) with zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) methods. In order to study the surface chemistry of NH4OH/Zry-4 system, the binding energies of N1s, O1s and Zr3d electrons were monitored. The N1s peak intensity was remarkably increased by following cycles of Ar+ sputtering of NH4OH dosed Zry-4 surface at room temperature. Because the nitrogen stayed under the subsurface region was diffused out onto the Zry-4 surface after oxygen concentration was decreased. These could be occurred after the surface oxygen was diffused into the bulk or desorbed out from the surface until Ar+ fluence was 6.0 × 1016 Ar+/cm2 then the surface was relatively atomic deficient state. The O1s peak intensity was decreased by stepwise Ar+ sputtering. After many cycles of Ar+ sputtering, the peak intensities of Zr3d peaks did not change much but the shape of the peak clearly did change. This implies that the oxidation state of zirconium was changed during stepwise Ar+ sputtering of NH4OH/Zry-4. The Zr3d peak intensity of zirconium nitride (ZrNx) increased as the intensity of N1s (from zirconium nitride) increased but the Zr3d peak intensity of zirconium oxide (ZrOx) decreased due to the depopulation of the oxygen species on the surface region. We also observed that the peak intensity of Zr4+ was nearly same after Ar+ sputtering processes but the peak intensity of metallic zirconium increased compared to that of before the sputtering process was performed.

  • As a replacement for activated carbon, biochar was synthesized and used for the adsorptive removal of formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide. Biochar was produced from the fast pyrolysis of the red marine macro alga, Pyropia tenera. The P. tenera char was then activated with steam, ammonia and KOH to alter its characteristics. The adsorption of formaldehyde, which is one of the main indoor air pollutants, onto the seaweed char was performed using 1-ppm formaldehyde and the char was activated using a range of methods. The char activated with both the KOH and ammonia treatments showed the highest adsorptive removal efficiency, followed by KOH-treated char, ammonia-treated char, steam-treated char, and non-activated char. The removal of 1000-ppm NO over untreated char, KOH-treated char, and activated carbon was also tested. While the untreated char exhibited little activity, the KOH-treated char removed 80% of the NO at 50℃, which was an even higher NO removal efficiency than that achieved by activated carbon.

  • This research makes a new attempt to apply the activated seawater by electrolysis in the development of two-stage wet scrubber system to control the exhaust gas of large marine diesel engines. First, with using only seawater that is naturally alkaline (pH typically around 8.1). the $SO_2\;and\;SO_3$ are absorbed by relatively high solubility compared to other components of exhaust pollutants, and PM (Particulate Matter) is removed through direct contact with sprayed seawater droplets. Besides, the electrolyzed alkaline seawater by electrolysis, which contains mainly NaOH together with alkali metal ions $(i.e.\;Na^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+})$, is used as the absorption medium of NOx and $CO_2$. Especially, to increase NOx absorption rate into the alkaline seawater. nitric oxide (NO) is adequately oxidized to nitrogen dioxide $(NO_2)$ in the acidic seawater, which means both volume fractions are adjusted to identical proportion. The results found that the strong acidic seawater was a valid oxidizer from NO to $NO_2$ and the strong alkaline seawater was effective in $CO_2$ absorption In the scrubber test, the SOx reduction of nearly $100\%$ could be achieved and also led to a sufficientPM reduction. Hence, the author believes that applying seawater and its electrolyte would bring the marine air pollution control system to an economical measure. Additionally it is well known that NOx and SOx concentration has a considerable influence on the $N_2O$ emission of green house gas. Although the $N_2O$ concentration exhausted from diesel engines is not as high, the green house gas effect is around 300 times greater than an equivalent volume of $CO_2$. Therefore, we investigated the $N_2O$ removal efficiency with using the electrolyzed seawater too. Finally this research would also plan to treat the effluent by applying electro-dialysis and electro-flotation technique s in the future.

  • A diesel engine works in high compression ratio due to injection of diesel fuel after compression of air. Therefore the engine has a high thermal efficiency, while nitrogen oxide is produced a lot in high flame temperature regions. In order to solve the problem this study HHO gas is added into the intake air of the industrial diesel engine. The test conditions are loads of 0%, 50% and 100% and engine speeds of 700 to 1900 rpm. The results show the maximum torque and pressure is increased, fuel consumption, smoke and CO emissions are decreased and NOx emission is remained at same level.

  • This study was investigated to determine the combustion characteristics, decomposition efficiency, and the flue gas concentrations after combustion in the high temperature reactor($1,250{\sim}1,400^{\circ}C$, 1 atm) for the liquid wastes(waste oil and waste solvent) generated from the industrial complex. The concentration of nitrogen oxide(NOx) is decreased and the synthetic gas is increased when the mass ratio of $O_2$/waste is about 1.53 because the reaction condition was changed to reduction state. And BTEXs(benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) are decomposed more than 99.99%. If the highly concentrated liquid waste (waste oil and waste solvent) is treated under the operating conditions suggested by this study, our treatment method for the liquid waste was found to be proper because of the contaminants emission concentration is very low. In addition, the synthetic gas after combustion can be used as an alternative fuel.

  • $Fe_2O_3$ is one of the most important metal oxides for gas sensing applications because of its low cost and high stability. It is well-known that the shape, size, and phase of $Fe_2O_3$ have a significant influence on its sensing properties. Many reports are available in the literature on the use of $Fe_2O_3$-based sensors for detecting gases, such as $NO_2$, $NH_3$, $H_2S$, $H_2$, and CO. In this paper, we investigated the gas-sensing performance of a Pt-doped ${\varepsilon}$-phase $Fe_2O_3$ gas sensor. Pt-doped $Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles were synthesized by a Sol-Gel method. Platinum, known as a catalytic material, was used for improving gas-sensing performance in this research. The gas-response measurement at $300^{\circ}C$ showed that $Fe_2O_3$ gas sensors doped with 3%Pt are selective for $NO_2$ gas and exhibita maximum response of 21.23%. The gas-sensing properties proved that $Fe_2O_3$ could be used as a gas sensor for nitrogen dioxide.

  • $\beta$-Sialon is synthesized by carbo-thermal reduction and nitriding (CTRN) method, using the Fly ash from power plant. $\beta$-Siaion is synthesized at $1,450^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, and sintered at $1,550 ^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in nitrogen atmosphere. The XRD analytical results show that the sintered $\beta$-Sialon contains $SiO_2$ and $FeSi_{x}$ of inter-metallic compound. The sintered $\beta$-Sialon is stable against the oxidation at the temperature of 1,31$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours. The weight of the sample increases rapidly by oxidation reaction at $1,360^{\circ}C$. The oxide scale is consisted with mullite phase when it is oxidized at the temperature of $1,360 ^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours.

  • Explosion range and explosion characteristics of by product gas from carbon black manufacturing process were studied. About 75% of the by product gas were composed with water vapour and nitrogen. And the combustible component in the gas were hydrogen, methane, acetylene and carbon mono-oxide. Because of the combustible components in the by product gas there are explosion hazards in the gas handling process. Explosion range of the gas by experiment was from 17.1% to 70.7% and the value has considerable difference with the calculated value from Lechatelier law. Explosion pressure of the gas was $5.4kg/cm^2$ and the average explosion pressure rise rate was $39.2kg/cm^2/s$. Based on the experimental result we can expect that a explosion or fire accident during the handling the gas can make a severe loss, therefore there should be a explosion prevention or protection measures in the gas handling process.

  • Automotive manufacturers have recently developed various technologies for improving fuel economy and satisfying enhanced emission regulations. The ultra-lean direct injection engine is a promising technology because it has the advantage of improving thermal efficiency through the deliberate control of ignition. A conventional LPG engine has been redesigned to an ultra-lean-burn LPG direct injection engine in order to adopt combustion system of ultra-lean-burn. This study is aimed at investigating the effect of a change in the compression ratio on the performance and emission characteristics of a lean-burn LPG engine. The fuel consumption, heat release rate, combustion pressure, and emission characteristics are estimated depending on changing the effect of compression ratio. When the compression ratio is increased, it is difficult to improve the fuel consumption owing to an unstable combustion state, but the total hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions are reduced.

  • N-nitrosamines, which are classified as carcinogens by IARC and US EPA, can be easily found in various foods. They are reaction products between nitrogen oxide and secondary amines, but can also be generated during fermentation. Ever since the 1960s, when nitrite, used as a preservative in processed meats, was suspected to generate N-nitrosamines, the usage of the food additive has been debated. However, the benefit of nitrite in food supply could not be ignored and the risk-benefit analysis has become a key issue in the use of the additive. For a risk analysis, an accurate estimation of the hazardous material is necessary; therefore, analytical methods for nitrosamines have continuously evolved from the 1950s. Solid supported liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extractions have replaced the distillation for the clean-up steps, and tandem mass spectrometry is employed for higher selectivity and sensitivity. In the present study, for a better estimation of N-nitrosamine intake, the total diet study samples were prepared for the N-nitrosamines analysis. In order to obtain the most sensitive results, a partial preparation procedure was developed and modified for different food matrices. Among seven N-nitrosamines (N-nitrosodimethylamine, N-nitrosomethylethylamine, N-nitrosodiethylamine, N-nitrosodibutylamine, N-nitrosopiperidine, N-nitrosopyrrolidine, and N-nitrosomorpholine) analyzed in the present study, N-nitrosodiethylamine has shown the highest detection rate in agricultural foods, while N-nitrosodimethylamine has appeared most frequently in livestock and fishery food products. The concentration of N-nitrosodimethylamine was the highest in seasoning.
