The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal of ammonium nitrogen by biological nitrification in raw water containing LAS using BAC. At batch teats, LAS removal by ozone followed the first order reaction, and the rate constants(k) by ozone dose 1, 3mg/min.L were $0.040min^{-1}$, $0.062min^{-1}$ respectively. Therefore, the more ozone was dosed, the higher LAS was removed The reaction between ozone and ammonium nitrogen also followed the first order, and rate constants(k) at pH7,8 and 9 were $8.9{\times}10^{-4}min-1$, $3.8{\times}10^{-3}min^{-1}$, and $2.9{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$ respectively at ozone dose of 3mg/min.L . Therefore, ammonium nitrogen was little removed by ozone under neutral pH of 7. The continuous flow apparatus had four sets composed of a ozone contacter and a GAC column. Through continuous filtration test for 50days, the following conclusions were derived; (1) LAS was removed 23%, 30% respectively by ozone dose 1, 3mg/L, and was not detected in all column effluents during the period of experiment. Therefore, it appeared that adsorption capacities of each column still remained. (2) Ammonium nitrogen concentration after ozone contact varied little in raw Water because pH of raw water was from 6 to 7, and was transfered to nitrite and nitrate within GAC columns as the result of staged nitrification. After 30days, nitrite was not detected in all column effluents due to biological equilbrium between nitro semonas and nitrobacter Average removals of ammonium nitrogen in each column after the lapse of 30days were the following; ${\cdot}$ column A (ozone dose 3mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): about 100% ${\cdot}$ column B (ozone dose 1mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): 91% ${\cdot}$ column C (ozone dose 3mg/L, EBCT 14.2min): about 100% ${\cdot}$ column D (ozone dose 0mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): 53% Though column A and C reached nitrification of about 100%, column C (longer EBCT than column A) was more stable than column A. (3) After backwash, nitrification reached steady state within 5 to 8 hours. Therefore, nitrification was not greatly affected by backwash. (4) According to the nitrification capacity in depth of column A, C, where 100% nitrification occured. LAS was removed within 20cm, while ammonium nitrogen required more depth to be removed by nitrification.

This study investigated the antimutagenic and anticancer effects of soybean sauce (kanjang) supplemented with deep sea water and Sea Tangle. The Ames test indicated that kanjang had no mutagenicity but it significantly inhibited mutations induced by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) and 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO). Kanjang (200 ug/plate) with supplementary deep sea water and Sea Tangle had approximately 90.9% and 62.0% inhibitory effect, respectively, against mutagenesis of TA100 induced by MNNG and 4NQO. There was 61.7% inhibition of mutagenesis induced by 4NQO against the TA98 strain. Kanjang inhibited growth of cell lines of human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep3B), human gastric carcinoma (AGS), human lung carcinoma (A549), and human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) in a concentration-dependent manner. Treatment with kanjang supplemented with 1.0 mg/mL deep sea water had cytotoxicities of 69.4% 70.5% 55.6% 82.1 % and 73.2% against HeLa, Hep3B, AGS, A549 and MCF-7 cells respectively. In contrast kanjang supplemented with 1 mg/mL deep sea water had only $10{\sim}40%$ cytotoxicity on normal human embryonal kidney cells (293). Kanjang supplemented with deep sea water significantly inhibited tumor growth in mice injected sarcoma-180 cells. In particular, kanjang supplemented with deep sea water (25 mg/kg) inhibited tumor cell activity by 40.9%.
The role of nitric oxide(NO) as neurotransmitter in non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) relaxation induced by electrical stimulation has been studied in circular muscle strips of the rabbit gastric fundus. In the presence of atropine and guanethidine, low frequency$(1{\sim}20\;Hz)$ and short trains (5s) of electrical stimulation induced the frequency-dependent relaxations which were not affected by adrenergic and cholinergic blockage, but abolished by tetrodotoxin, a nerve conductance blocker. L-NNA, a stereospecific inhibitor of NO biosynthesis, inhibited the relaxations induced by electrical stimulation but not affected the relaxation to exogenous NO. The effect of L-NNA was prevented by L-arginine, the precursor of the NO biosynthesis, but not by its enantiomer, D-arginine. Exogenous administration of NO$(10{\sim}100\;{\mu}M)$ caused the concentration-dependent relaxation which showed a similarity to those obtained with electrical stimulation. Hemoglobin, a NO scavenger, abolished the NO-induced relaxations and also markedly inhibited those evoked by electrical stimulation. Application of adenosine triphosphate$(1{\sim}10\;{\mu}M)$ induced concentration-independent contractions, but in high dose caused temporary contraction followed by relaxation which was not affected by L-NNA. Exogenous vasoactive intestinal polypeptide$(10{\sim}100\;nM)$ induced the concentration-dependent relaxation, while its effects were slower in onset and more persistent than those induced by short trains and low frequencies of electrical stimulation. Based on above results, it is suggested that NO is the principal neurotransmitter of NANC nerve at relaxation induced by short trains and low frequencies of electrical stimulation in the rabbit gastric fundus.
Chlorobium liimicola f. thiosulfatophilum NCIB 8327 was grown on modified Pfennig's medium using ammonium chloride. glutamine. glutamate, or dinitrogen gas as nitrogen sources. Except for the case of dinitrogen gas. the extent of gro\\1h was almost the s~me. The specific activity of glutamine synthetase in crude extracts is the highest in the cells which were grown on the medium containing glutamate. hut that of glutamate synthase is uniform for all four nitrogen sources. When the concentration of ammonium ions increases in the reaction mixture. the specific activity of glutamine synthetase in crude extract from the cells grown on glutamate decreases. hut that of glutamate dehydrogenase increases. whereas that of glutamate synthase remains unchanged. When the concentration of methionine sulfoximine increases, the activity of glutamine synthetases decreases rapidly. On the other hand. when the concentration of ammonium ions increases in the reaction mixture gradually. the activity of glutamine synthetase from the cells grown on higher concentration of ammonium ions less decreases. In the presence of light. the activity of glutamine synthetase increases. hut in the dark it decreases gradually. The production of hydrogen in intact cells depends on light. It is inhihited by adding ammonium ions. hut restores immediately hy adding methionine sulfoximine. The produclion of hydrogen in this strain can he mediated by nitrogenase only. and regulated hy glutamine synthetase.

In order to find out the decomposing factors of Sumithion in mineral diluents, the physical and chemical properties of the diluents such as talcs, bentonites, diatomaceous earth and other clay minerals was studied in relation to the decomposition rate of Sumithion in dust formulations. The total base, moisture adsorption capacity, pH, specific surface, water contents, active $Fe^{++}$, ignition loss and cation exchange capacity were analysed as the properties of mineral diluents, and these properties were correlated with the stability of Sumithion in dust formulations. And in hope of finding out the main factors among those properties of diluents, the decomposed products of Sumithion in dust formulations prepared with standard Sumithion were separated by the methods of column chromatography and investigated by thin layer chromatography. The following results were otbained; 1. The total base, moisture adsorption capacity, specific surface, water contents, active $Fe^{++}$ and cation exchange capacity of mineral diluents were found to be highly effective on the rate of decomposition of Sumithion in dust formulations. 2. Decomposed products of Sumithion in dust formulations were found to be dimethylphosphorothionate, 3-methyl-4-nitro phenol and its derivatives. And one fraction was not dissolved in n-hexane and ethylether, but was soluble in methylalcohol and ethylalcohol. 3. The moat highly correlated properties of diluents with the decomposition rate of Sumithion in dust were found to be the total base and water contents. 4. In regard to the kind of diluents, it was found that the rate of decomposition of Sumithion in dust formulations was higher in order of bentonite, diatomaceous earth, kaolin and talc.

Purified salt and several different types of sea salts showed comutagenicity in the presence of MNNG (N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine). However, the salts exhibited anti-cancer effects in HCT-116 human colon carcinoma cells and AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells. Sea salt showed less comutagenicity effects than purified salt. French sea salt (Salines de Guerande) and Korean sea salt I, which contained higher levels of minerals, showed less comutagenicity. In MTT assay, when HCT-116 and AGS cancer cells were treated with the salts, French sea salt (36% and 34%) and Korean sea salt I (35% and 33%) showed higher anticancer activities than Spanish sea salt (33% and 31%), Italian sea salt (29% and 27%), Korean sea salt II (22% and 22%), or purified salt (18% and 15%) at a salt concentration of 1%. French sea salt and Korean sea salt I also showed better anticancer activities than the other salt samples at a low concentration of 0.5% (p<0.05). Apoptosis related genes of Bax and Bcl-2 were regulated by the treatment of the salt in the colon cancer cells. French sea salt and Korean sea salt I especially increased Bax mRNA expression, but decreased Bcl-2 expression, indicating that they can induce apoptosis of the cancer cells. From the experimental results, sea salt showed better health functional effects than the purified salt, and French sea salt and Korean sea salt I which contained high levels of Ca, K, and Mg showed better effects.
The antimutagenic mechanism of cinnamaldeyde on mutagenesis induced by 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide(4-NQO) and N-metyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) was investigated in various DNA repair-deficient strains, E. coli B/r and K-12 series. Cinnamaldehyde did not show any effects not only on the $\beta$-galactosidase activities of GW1060 and GW1103(recA441) which synthesizes $\beta$-galactosidase consitutively at 41$^{\circ}C$ but also on that of GW1107[lexA51 (Def)] in which the SOS response always occur. These results suggest that cinnamaldehyde dose not change the function of RecA which positively controls the SOS response as well as not acting as the repressor like LexA. In addition, no inhibitory effect of cinnamaldehyde was observed on the growth of Trp+ revertant and the delay of viable cell growth was also not found by adding cinnamaldehyde. Despite the decrease in the number of revertants, a significant increase in survival of 4-NQO treated cells was observed in E. coli WP2s(uvrA), ZA159($\Delta$uvrB) and TK603(uvrA). But these effects disappeared in excision-proficient strain WP2(uvrA+) and lexA-deficient strains(CM561 and CM611). The enhancement of survival was not found in WP67(uvrA polA) deficient in polymerase I which ligates the gap between complementary DNA. From the above results, we assume that cinnamaldehyde might show antimutagenic effect by enhancing an error-free recombinational repair system.
Rates of the reaction for p-nitro benzyl chloride, benzyl chloride and p-methyl benzyl chloride with pyridine in methanol solvent have been measured by an electric conductivity method at 40$^{\circ}$C and 50$^{\circ}$C under various pressures (1∼2000bar). Pseudo first-order rate constants and second-order rate constants were determined. Rates of these reactions were increased in the order p-NO$_2$ < p-H < p-CH$_3$ and increased with temperature, pressure and concentration of pyridine. From those rate constants, the activation parameters were evaluated. The activation volume and the activation compressibility coefficient are both negative values, but the activation enthalpy is positive and the activation entropy is large negative value. From the evaluation of the ground state and transition state which was resulted from substituents and pressure, it was found that this reaction proceeds through S$_N$2 reaction, and S$_N$2 fashion is slightly disappeared as pressure increases.
Endothelin-1 (ET-1 ), a novel and potent vasoconstrictor in blood vessel, is known to have some functions in the rat central nervous system (CNS), In order to investigate the central functions of ET-1 , ET-1 was administered to the periaqueductal gray area (PAC) of anesthetized rats to induce barrel rolling and increase the arterial blood pressure (ABP). ET-1 had a modulatory effect on central cardiovascular and behavioral control. The selective N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist MK-801 (3${u}m/ol/kg$, i.p.) blocked the ET-1 induced responses, and both the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-NAME (N-nitro-L-arginine mIThyl-ester 1 nmol/rat) and the nitric oxide (NO) scavenger hemoglobin (15 nmol/rat) had similar effects in redtAcing the IT-1 (10 pmol/rat)-induced behavioral changes and ABP elevation. However, NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP 10${u}g$, 1${u}g/rat$) decreased the ET-1 induced ABP elevation, and recovered the ET-1 -induced barrel rolling effect that was reduced by MK-801. These results suggest that ET-1 might have neuromodulatory functions such as ABP elevation and barrel rolling induction in the PAG of the rats via the NMDA receptor and NO.

Background: Depression is one of the most commonly diagnosed neuropsychiatric diseases, but the underlying mechanism and medicine are not well-known. Although Panax ginseng has been reported to exert protective effects in various neurological studies, little information is available regarding its antidepressant effects. Methods: Here, we examined the antidepressant effect and underlying mechanism of P. ginseng extract (PGE) in a chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced depression model in mice. Results: Oral administration of PGE for 14 d decreased immobility (depression-like behaviors) time in forced swim and tail suspended tests after CRS induction, which corresponded with attenuation of the levels of serum adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone, as well as attenuated c-Fos expression in the amygdala. PGE enhanced messenger RNA expression level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor but ameliorated microglial activation and neuroinflammation (the level of messenger RNA and protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase) in the amygdala of mice after CRS induction. Interestingly, 14-d treatment with celecoxib, a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, and $N_{\omega}$-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride, a selective inducible nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, attenuated depression-like behaviors after CRS induction. Additionally, PGE inhibited the upregulation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2 related factor 2 and heme oxygenase-1 pathways. Conclusion: Taken together, our findings suggest that PGE exerts antidepressant-like effect of CRS-induced depression by antineuroinflammatory and antioxidant (nuclear factor erythroid 2 related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 activation) activities by inhibiting the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis mechanism. Further studies are needed to evaluate the potential of components of P. ginseng as an alternative treatment of depression, including clinical trial evaluation.
