  • This study aimed to develop a compact partial nitritation step by forming granules with high Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB) fraction using the Air-lift Granulation Reactor (AGR) and to evaluate the feasibility of treating reject water with high ammonium content by combination with the Anammox process. The partial nitritation using AGR was achieved at high nitrogen loading rate ($2.25{\pm}0.05kg\;N\;m-3\;d^{-1}$). The important factors for successful partial nitritation at high nitrogen loading rate were relatively high pH (7.5~8), resulting in high free ammonia concentration ($1{\sim}10mg\;FA\;L^{-1}$) and highly enriched AOB granules accounting for 25% of the total bacteria population in the reactor. After the establishment of stable partial nitritation, an effluent $NO_2{^-}-N/NH_4{^+}-N$ ratio of $1.2{\pm}0.05$ was achieved, which was then fed into the Anammox reactor. A high nitrogen removal rate of $2.0k\; N\;m^{-3}\;d^{-1}$ was successfully achieved in the Anammox reactor. By controlling the nitrogen loading rate at the partial nitritation using AGR, the influent concentration ratio ($NO_2{^-}-N/NH_4{^+}-N=1.2{\pm}0.05$) required for the Anammox was controlled, thereby minimizing the inhibition effect of residual nitrite.

  • Partial nitirification and denitrification process has been reported to be technically feasible and economically favorable, especially for wastewater treatment with high ammonium concentration or low Carbon/Nitrogen ratio. This research was performed to survey nitrite accumulation by nitritation in treating ADEPT effluent of piggery wastewater, which contains highly concentrated ammonia. To estimate the possibility of nitrite accumulation, DO concentration and SRT were investigated as key operational parameters. This result proved that nitritation to nitrite was steadily obtained under short sludge retention time. Oxygen limitation was proved to be just a subsidiary parameter. Energy efficiency of nitritation-denitritation process was higher than complete nitrification-denitrification because external carbon requirement for denitritation could be saved. Though the influent contained significant nonbiodegradable organic substrate, total nitrogen removal efficiency was more than 51% in nitritation-denitritation system.

  • As the effluent quality standard of the municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP) has been strengthened, the treatment of the recycle water containing high concentration of ammonium nitrogen has been considered as one of retrofit methods for upgrading the exising MWTPs. In this study, nitritation, economic nitrogen removal process, was induced by laboratory-scale reactor at the $35^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $10^{\circ}C$ temperature conditions using anaerobic digester supernatant. The stable nitritation was achieved over $20^{\circ}C$, but nitrification was induced at $10^{\circ}C$. It means that the nitritation was affected by SRT and temperature. SRT, demanded for nitritation, is changed according to the temperature. Therefore, it is considered that SRT and temperature are important factors in nitritation. Also, it is approved that inducing the ammonium nitrogen removal and the nitritation are more beneficial over $20^{\circ}C$. The conclusion of this study can be used for the important basic reference when nitritation process is applied for MWTPs.

  • Recently, interests to remove nitrogen in the nitritation process have increased because of its economical advantages, since it could be a short-cut process to save both oxygen for nitrification and carbon for denitrification compared to a typical nitrification. However, the kinetics related with the nitritation process has not yet been fully understood. Furthermore, many useful models which have been successfully used for wastewater treatment processes cannot be used to estimate effluent nitrite concentration for evaluating performance of the nitritation process, since the process rate equations and population of microorganisms for nitrogen removal in these models have been set up only for the condition of full nitrification. Therefore, the present study was conducted to estimate an effluent nitrite concentration in the nitritation process with a concept of enzymatic inhibition kinetics based on long-term laboratory experiments. Using a nonlinear least squares regression method, kinetic parameters were accurately determined. By setting up a process rate equation along with a mass balance equation of the nitrite-oxidizing step, an effluent nitrite concentration in the nitritation process was then successfully estimated.

  • The anaerobic digester supernatant (ADS) with high $NH_4-N$ concentration often results in a $NH_4-N$ overloading to the mainstream process of municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP). The nitrogen removal from the ADS is therefore important in order to achieve a stable mainstream process performance as well as to prevent $NH_4-N$ overloading due to ADS. Recently because of several advantages compared to the full nitrification, many works have shown interests in controlling the build-up of $NO_2-N$ in nitritation processes. The application of nitritation could save the aeration power compared to the full nitrification processes. In addition, the denitrification of $NO_2-N$ could reduce organic carbon requirements compared to the $NO_3-N$ denitrification. The purpose of this research was to find out the characteristics of the ADS nitritation and $NO_2-N$ accumulating factors from the laboratory reactor study. As a result based on the long-term laboratory experiment, it can be concluded that the degree of nitritation was closely related with the availability of alkalinity, free ammonia (FA), solid retention time (SRT) and solid concentration in the nitritation reactor.

  • An experimental study of biofilm nitritation system for high-strength ammonium wastewater has been carried out to examine the temperature effect on different organic and solid concentration. Operating temperature varied from $35^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The influent N concentration of identical three reactors was adjusted to about $300mg\;NH_4-N/L$. A control unit fed with a synthetic wastewater, while the others were fed with reject water which is consisted of the supernatant of both digester and thickener. The results indicated that nitrite accumulation was stable in temperature range of $35^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$. However, nitritation was significantly reduced at below $20^{\circ}C$. Free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) were major inhibitors to the nitrite oxidizer for nitrite accumulation in lower temperature. From the estimation of temperature coefficient (${\Theta}$) of biofilm and suspended nitritation system, biofilm nitritation system could absorb the negative temperature effect compared with suspended nitritation system.

  • Preparing for the Standards for Effluents which will be strengthen from 2012, many ways like remodellings and repairs of sewage treatment plant (STP) are considered. The treatment of the recycle water from the sludge treatment process contains high-strength organic compounds and nitrogen is considered as alternative. In the treatment of high-strength nitrogen, nitritation has more economic advantages than nitrification. In this study, lab-scale reactor was operated at the $35^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ conditions using effluent of anaerobic digester to investigate the nitrogen removal by nitritation. Long-term stable nitritation was achieved at the $35^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ but $10^{\circ}C$. In the stable nitritation states, nitrite conversion was higher at the high temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ than the room temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. Also shorter solid retention time (SRT) was needed to induce high nitrite conversion at the high temperature of $35^{\circ}C$. It was showed that temperature and SRT are important factors to induce nitritation.

  • BNR process is an effective method to remove high strength nitrogen included in wastewater and piggery wastewater. There have been many former studies about the induction of nitritation which have many advantages than full nitrification and the impacting factors on nitritation. Especially, it is reported that organic matter has a relation with nitritation. In this study, laboratory sacle reactor was operated using effluent of anaerobic digester, piggery wastewater and anaerobic digester effluent of piggery wastewater. After analyzing the operating results, the impact of organic matter on nitritation was analyzed by classified COD fractions. It was showed that nitritation is affected by organic matter especially by Ss. In conclusion, organic matter should be managed not just as a single gross parameter but in a classified form.

  • Objectives: Organic matter and nitrogen were removed using the EGSB process, a high-rate anaerobic process, in combination with a nitritation-denitritation process, in order to ensure the stable treatment of seafood processing wastewater. Methods: The upflow velocity of an EGGS reactor was operated at 10 m/hr for maximal organics removal efficiency. For removal of nitrogen from seafood processing wastewater a nitritation-denitriation process was applied Results: The efficiency of the EGSB process showed that it has an 80% or more organic matter (CODcr) removal efficiency with an HRT of six hours or more at influent loadings of 17.34 kgCOD/$m^3$/day or less. The methane product for TCODcr removal was 0.23-0.38 $m^3CH_4$/kgCODrem., which was similar to the theoretical generation of STP-state methane, 0.35 $m^3CH_4$/kgTCODrem. In the nitritation-denitritation process, the nitritation conversion rate to $NH_4^+$-N concentration was 82% to 87%, 72% to 81% and 64% to 69% when HRT was 24 hr, 21 hr and 18 hr, respectively. In the denitritation process, the ratio of SCOD consumption to NOx-N removal ranged from 2.347 to 2.587. It was 2.472 on average. Conclusions: The optimal HRT for stable processing of seafood processing wastewater is six hours or more. The ratio of nitrite to total NOx-N was 82% to 96%, which indicates that nitrite accounts for the largest portion of the product.

  • As the seriousness of water pollution resulted from nitrogen is being magnified, research has been conducted to reduce nitrogen in sewage as well as wastewater. Particularly research on innovative nitrogen removal methods that are based on the reaction of nitritation and are economically feasible and eco-friendly has been receiving attention. However, research on the applicability and efficiency of the methods based on the reaction of nitritation has not been completely done yet. Accordingly, the current study has analyzed the characteristics of sewage flowing into municipal wastewater treatment plants, primary clarifier supernatant, recycled water, and livestock wastewater and also operated a laboratory-level reactor. The result shows that recycled water and livestock wastewater contain higher-concentration nitrogen than other kinds of sewage, so they increase nitrogen loading in the water treatment line. And the result of operating a reactor shows that because of ammonium nitrogen low concentration, sewage and primary clarifier supernatant do not induce the reaction of nitritation. Also, there exist differences in the conditions of retention time inducing the reaction of nitritation by the types of sewage, and this seems to be attributed to organic compound and ammonium nitrogen concentration. Among the kinds of sewage inducing the reaction of nitritation, anaerobic digester supernatant indicates the highest efficiency.
