  • Friction coefficient of SM45C steel was surprisingly reduced with $H_2S$ and $C_3H_8$ gas during plasma sulf-nitriding. During the plasma sulf-nitriding, 100-700 sccm of $H_2S$ gas and 100 sccm of $C_3H_8$ gas were added and working pressure and temperature were 2 torr, $500-550^{\circ}C$, respectively. As $H_2S$ gas amount increased over 500 sccm, flake-like structures were developed on top of the nitriding layer and grain size of the nitriding layer were about 100 nm. The friction coefficient for the sample treated plasma sulf-nitriding under $N_2-H_2S$ gas was 0.4 - 0.5. The structure became more finer and amorphous-like along with $N_2-H_2S-C_3H_8$ gas and the nano-sized surface microstructures resulted in high hardness and significantly low friction coefficient of 0.2.

  • A systematic investigation was made on the influence of processing parameters such as gas composition and treatment temperature on the surface characteristics of hardened layers of low temperature plasma nitrided 316L Austenitic Stainless Steel. Various nitriding processes were conducted by changing temperature ($370^{\circ}C$ to $430^{\circ}C$) and changing $N_2$ percentage (10% to 25%) for 15 hours in the glow discharge environment of a gas mixture of $N_2$ and $H_2$ in a plasma nitriding system. In this process a constant pressure of 4 Torr was maintained. Increasing nitriding temperature from $370^{\circ}C$ to $430^{\circ}C$, increases the thickness of S phase layer and the surface hardness, and also makes an improvement in corrosion resistance, irrespective of nitrogen percent. On the other hand, increasing nitrogen percent from 10% to 25% at $430^{\circ}C$ decreases corrosion resistance although it increases the surface hardness and the thickness of S phase layer. Therefore, optimized condition was selected as nitriding temperature of $430^{\circ}C$ with 10% nitrogen, as at this condition, the treated sample showed better corrosion resistance. Moreover to further increase the thickness of S phase layer and surface hardness without compromising the corrosion behavior, further research was conducted by fixing the $N_2$ content at 10% with introducing various amount of $CH_4$ content from 0% to 5% in the nitriding atmosphere. The best treatment condition was determined as 10% $N_2$ and 5% $CH_4$ content at $430^{\circ}C$, where the thickness of S phase layer of about $17{\mu}m$ and a surface hardness of $980HV_{0.1}$ were obtained (before treatment $250HV_{0.1}$ hardness). This specimen also showed much higher pitting potential, i.e. better corrosion resistance, than specimens treated at different process conditions and the untreated one.

  • The effect of time, temperature and gas composition on the case hardened thickness, hardness and nitride formation in the surface of ductile cast iron(GCD400) have been studied by micro-pulse plasma technique. Typically, external compound layer and internal diffusion layer which is much thicker than compound layer was observed in the nitride hardening of ductile cast iron. The relative amount kind of phases formed in the nitrided hardening changed with the change of nitriding conditions. Generally, only nitride phases such as $\gamma^'$($Fe_4N$), or $\varepsilon$($Fe_{2-3}N$) phases were detected in compound layer by XRD analysis. The thickness of compound layer increased with the increase of nitrogen content in the gas composition. The optimum nitriding temperature was obtained at $520^{\circ}C$. The nitrided hardening thickness parabolically with nitriding time(t) and thus, the case hardened layer(d) fits well with the typical parabolic equation ; d=kt. The material constant k for GCD400 nitrided at $520^{\circ}C$ was $0.04919\times10^3{\mu}m.hr^{-1/2}$.

  • It has been investigated that the ion nitriding effects of a STD61 steel in various time conditions of 3 to 9 hours, and the microstructure of compound and diffusion layers of the ion nitrided specimen for 6 hours and subsequently reheated for 1 hour at various temperatures of $400{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ As the nitriding time increased, the thickness of compound and diffusion layers was increased, but the hardness of surface was not considerably increased (Max Hv=1045 at 9hrs). Some of the nitrogen was denitrided out of the surfac and diffused into the core, and also the oxides ($Fe_3O_4$, $Fe_2O_3$) were formed on the surface of the specimen during reheating. The compound layer was partially decomposed at about $600^{\circ}C$ but the diffusion layer was increased up to $800^{\circ}C$. With increasing reheated temperture, the hardness of the surface was decreased, whereas the hardness depth of diffusion layer (0.25mm) was increased up to $600^{\circ}C$ more than that of ion nitrided (0.18mm). The blend-heat treated STD61 steel by ion nitriding is therefore expected to hold on the characteristics of ion nitriding up to $600^{\circ}C$.

  • The characteristics of corrosion resistance for the surface of ductile cast iron(GCD40) by plasma nitriding process have been studied in terms of electrochemical polarization behaviors including corrosion potential($E_{corr}$), anodic polarization trends, polarization resistance($R_p$), and also have been studied microstructures, hardness and specific wear of nitrided layer Nitrided layer showed an enhanced hardness values in all the plasma nitriding condition investigated. In the result of wear test, specific wear of nitrided specimens were much decreased than that of non-treated specimens. In the results of XRD, ${\gamma}'phase\;and\;{\varepsilon}$ phase were detected in nitrided surface. And it was found that ${\varepsilon}$ phase was decreased and ${\gamma}'phase$ was increased respectively, as the nitriding time became longer. In the test of corrosion resistance, natural potentials in all the nitrided specimens were towards noble directions than in the case of non-treated specimens. The measurement of electrode potentials revealed that corrosion resistivity of plasma nitrided specimens were higher than in the case of the non-treated specimens.

  • In this study, the effects of nitriding methods and times on the fatigue strength of SACM 645 steel were investigated. The rotary bending tests were carried out to obtain and compare the fatigue strengths of plasma ion nitrided specimens and gas nitride specimen. The 70 hr. gas nitrided specimen had the highest fatigue strength of 1.05$\times$$10^3$ MPa over the 40 hr., 70 hr. and 90 hr. plasma ion nitrided specimens, which had the fatigue strength of 3.48$\times$$10^2$, 4.57$\times$$10^2$ and 4.64$\times$$10^2$ respectively. Also, the microhardness tests were conducted to measure the effective case depths. The plasma ion nitrided specimens showed much higher surface hardness values than the gas nitrided specimen overall.

  • The improved properties of surface layer can be achieved by so-called "new salt bath nitriding(NSBN)", which has been developed by a domestic company. This process based upon modified traditional salt bath nitriding process, increased hardenability with minimum toughness deterioration. This process also offers not only less white layer surfaces but also more eco-friendly one. That is, NSBN is the new eco-friendly surface treatment technology removing harmful $CN^-$ and toxic gas. According to the research of applying NSBN to Cr-Mo-V steel which has been used in defense industry, showed the improved result of wear resistance and surface hardening than non-coated condition. In further, we expect NSBN to curtail expenses and productivity improvement applied to the various defense industry parts.

  • Effect of pre-treatment on the gas nitriding process of austenitic stainless steels has been investigated and the following results were obtained. Minimum pre-treatment time was decreased to 5min with increasing treatment temperature from $200^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. Surface activation effect by the pre-treatment was maintained in the air up to holding time of 64hr, judging from the analysis result of gas nitrided specimens. The Depth of nitrided layer of STS 304 and 316 stainless steels were ranged from $5{\mu}m$ to $90{\mu}m$ at $440^{\circ}C{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction intensity for austenitic stainless steels were increases as nitriding temperature from $440^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$.

  • This study has been carried out to the low temperature plasma nitriding treatment on the mechanical properties of stainless steel at temperature range between $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that there was precipitated to free CrN matrix below $400^{\circ}C$ and there was precipitated S-phase of STS 316L, ${\varepsilon}$-phase of STS 409L and ${\alpha}N$-phase of STS 420J2. STS 316L has formed relatively abundant CrN phase and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ phase at $500^{\circ}C$, alternatively STS 409L and STS 420J2 were more deeply nitrided than STS 316L at $500^{\circ}C$.
