Purpose: In-situ water quality monitoring based on ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) is a promising technique because ISEs can be used directly in the medium to be tested, have a compact size, and are inexpensive. However, signal drift can be a major concern with on-line management systems because continuous immersion of the ISEs in water causes electrode degradation, affecting the stability, repeatability, and selectivity over time. In this study, a computer-based nitrate monitoring system including automatic electrode rinsing and calibration was developed to measure the nitrate concentration in water samples in real-time. Methods: The capabilities of two different types of poly(vinyl chloride) membrane-based ISEs, an electrode with a liquid filling and a carbon paste-based solid state electrode, were used in the monitoring system and evaluated on their sensitivities, selectivities, and durabilities. A feasibility test for the continuous detection of nitrate ions in water using the developed system was conducted using water samples obtained from various water sources. Results: Both prepared ISEs were capable of detecting low concentrations of nitrate in solution, i.e., 0.7 mg/L $NO_3-N$. Furthermore, the electrodes have the same order of selectivity for nitrate: $NO_3{^-}{\gg}HCO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $H_2PO_4{^-}$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$, and maintain their sensitivity by > 40 mV/decade over a period of 90 days. Conclusions: The use of an automated ISE-based nitrate measurement system that includes automatic electrode rinsing and two-point normalization proved to be feasible in measuring $NO_3-N$ in water samples obtained from different water sources. A one-to-one relationship between the levels of $NO_3-N$ measured with the ISEs and standard analytical instruments was obtained.

In order to remove both nitrate and sulfate present in the concentrate of RO(reverse osmosis) process, a combined bio-regeneration and ion-exchange(IX) system was studied. For this purpose, both denitrifying bacteria(DNB) and sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB) were simultaneously cultivated in a bio-reactor under anaerobic conditions. When the IX column containing a nitrate-selective A520E resin was fully exhausted by nitrate and sulfate, the IX column was bio-regenerated by pumping the supernatant of the bio-reactor, which contains MLSS concentration of $125{\pm}25mg/L$, at the flowrate of 360 BV/hr. Even though the nitrate-selective A520E resin was used, the breakthrough curves of ionic species showed that sulfate was exhausted earlier than nitrate. The reason for this result is due to the fact that the concentration of sulfate in RO concentrate was 36 to 48 times higher than nitrate. The bio-reactor was successfully operated at a volumetric loading rate of 0.6 g $COD/l{\cdot}d$, nitrate-N loading rate of 0.13 g $NO_3{^-}-N/l{\cdot}d$, and sulfate loading rate of 0.08 g $SO_4{^{2-}}/l{\cdot}d$. The removal rate of SCOD, nitrate-N, sulfate was 90, 100, and 85%, respectively. When the virgin resin was fully exhausted and consecutively bio-regenerated for 2 days, 81% of nitrate and 93% of sulfate were reduced. When the virgin resin was repeatedly used up to 4 cycles of service and bio-regeneration, the ion-exchange capacity of bio-regenerated resin decreased to 95, 91, 88, and 81% of virgin resin.
또한 NO$_{3}$$^{-}$/SO$_{3}$$^{2-}$ 농도비가 1.0 이하에서 NO$_{3}$$^{-}$의 흡착은 100%로 이루어졌으며, 반면 SO$_{3}$$^{2-}$ 은 20%흡착되었다.
Ion-exchange technology is one of the best for removing nitrate from drinking water. However, problems related to the disposal of spent brine from regeneration of exhausted resins must be overcome so that ion exchange can be applied more widely and economically, especially in small communities. In this background, a combined bio-regeneration and ion-exchange system was operated in order to prove that nitrate-laden resins could be bio-regenerated through direct contact with denitrifying bacteria. A nitrate-selective A520E resin was successfully regenerated by denitrifying bacteria. The bio-regeneration efficiency of nitrate-laden resins increased with the amount of flow passed through the ion-exchange column. When the fully exhausted resin was bio-regenerated for 5 days at the flowrate of 30 BV/hr and MLSS concentration of $125{\pm}25mg/L$, 97.5% of ion-exchange capacity was recovered. Measurement of nitrate concentrations in the column effluents also revealed that less than 5% of nitrate was eluted from the resin during 5 days of bio-regeneration. This result indicates that the main mechanism of bio-regeneration is the direct reduction of nitrate by denitrifying bacteria on the resin.
Lab-scale Electrodialysis(ED) system with different membranes combined with before or after pyroma process were carried out to remove nitrate from two pickling acid wastewater containing high concentrations of $NO_3\;^-$(${\approx}$150,000 mg/L) and F($({\approx}$ 160,000 mg/L) and some heavy metals(Fe, Ti, and Cr). The ED system before Pyroma process(Sample A) was not successful in $NO_3\;^-$ removal due to cation membrane fouling by the heavy metals, whereas, in the ED system after Pyroma process(Sample B), about 98% of nitrate was removed because of relatively low $NO_3\;^-$ concentration (about 30,000 mg/L) and no heavy metals. Mono-selective membranes(CIMS/ACS) in ED system have no selectivity for nitrate compared to divalent-selective membranes(CMX/AMX). The operation time for nitrate removal time decreased with increasing the applied voltage from 10V to 15V with no difference in the nitrate removal rate between both voltages. Nitrate adsorption of a strong-base anion exchange resin of $Cl\;^-$ type was also conducted. The Freundlich model($R^2$ > 0.996) was fitted better than Langmuir mode($R^2$ > 0.984) to the adsorption data. The maximum adsorption capacity ($Q^0$) was 492 mg/g for Sample A and 111 mg/g for Sample B due to the difference in initial nitrate concentrations between the two wastewater samples. In the regeneration of ion exchange resins, the nitrate removal rate in the pickling acid wastewater decreased as the adsorption step was repeated because certain amount of adsorbed $NO_3\;^-$ remained in the resins in spite of several desorption steps for regeneration. In conclusion, the optimum system configuration to treat pickling acid wastewater from stainless-steel industry is the multi-processes of the Pyroma-Electrodialysis-Ion exchange.
For the determination of polluant NOx in ambient air, nitrate ion-selective electrode(ISE) was made. To comparison of NOx in each method, the nitrate-ISE, NEBA, Orion electrode were used to determinee NOx in ambient air. In this work, the concentration of NOx in ambient air was average 0.06ppm. The results were good agreement with those obtained by each method within a relative error of 3%, Absorbing efficiency of nitrogen oxides in ambient air was good for Alkali solution. The determination of nitrogen oxides in ambient air using the Aliquat 336N-PVC membrane electrode was one of the useful method. The best characteristics of the Aliquat 336N-PVC me,mbrane electrode were obtained with the ion-exchanger concentration level of 6.5-9.1 percent by weight. The optimal membrane composition, was 9.09wt.% of ion-exchanger, 30.95wt.% of PVC, 60.6wt.% of plasticizer (DBP), and 0.5mm of thickness. Under the above condition, the electrode approached the Nernstian slope most closely, and the linear response ranges produced the best results.
The present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of selective $ET_A$ receptor antagonist, ambrisentan on hyperhomocysteinemia-induced experimental vascular dementia. L-methionine was administered for 8 weeks to induce hyperhomocysteinemia and associated vascular dementia in male rats. Ambrisentan was administered to L-methionine-treated effect rats for 4 weeks (starting from $5^{th}$ to $8^{th}$ week of L-methionine treatment). On $52^{nd}$ day onward, the animals were exposed to the Morris water maze (MWM) for testing their learning and memory abilities. Vascular endothelial function, serum nitrite/nitrate levels, brain thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), brain reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, and brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were also measured. L-methionine-treated animals showed significant learning and memory impairment, endothelial dysfunction, decrease in/serum nitrite/nitrate and brain GSH levels along with an increase in brain TBARS levels and AChE activity. Ambrisentan significantly improved hyperhomocysteinemia-induced impairment of learning, memory, endothelial dysfunction, and changes in various biochemical parameters. These effects were comparable to that of donepezil serving as positive control. It is concluded that ambrisentan, a selective $ET_A$ receptor antagonist may be considered as a potential pharmacological agent for the management of hyperhomocysteinemia-induced vascular dementia.
The perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate ion-selective PVC membrance electrode for measuring hazardous anion in waste water were developed by incorporating the quaternary ammonium salts as active material. Ion-selective characteristics in waste water were studied by the useful pH range, the selective coefficients to various interfering anions, and the stability of electrode potential. DBP was best as a plasticizer. The effect of the membrane thickness on the electrode characteristics was improved with decreasing the membrane thickness, but below the optimum membrane thickness the electrode exhibited an inverse trend. The electrode potential of perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate electrode with TDDA, as active material, was stable within the pH range 4-11, 3-12, and 4-10 repectively. And the long-term potential stability of these electrodes were 3.0, 3.5, and 3.5 months respectively. The order of the selectivity coefficients was as shown below ; $ClO_4{^-}$ > $SCN^-$ > $I^-$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Br^-$ > $CN^-$ > $F^-$ > $Cl^-$ > $Ac^-$ > $H_2PO_4{^-}$, $SO_4{^-}$.
