ZanF를 이용한 질산성 질소 환원 및 암모늄부산물 동시제거

  • Reduction of nitrate by zero valent iron (Fe$^{0}$ ) has been previously studied, but the proper treatment for the by-product of ammonium has not been reported. However, in terms of nitrogen contamination, ammonium may be regarded as another form of nitrogen contaminants since it can be oxidized to nitrate again under aerobic conditions. This study is focused on simultaneous removal of nitrate and its by-product of ammonium, with the ZanF (Zeolite anchored Fe), a product derived from zeolite modified by Fe(II) chloride followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Batch experiments were performed without buffer at two different pH condition with ZanF, iron filing, Fe(II)-sorbed zeolite, and pure zeolite to estimate the nitrate reduction and the ammonium production. At higher pH, removal rate of nitrate was reduced in both ZanF and iron filings. ZnF removed 60 % of nitrate at initial pH of 3.3 with no production of ammonium, while iron filing showed equivalent production of ammonium to the reduced amount of nitrate. In terms of nitrogen contamination, ZanF removed about 60 % and 40 % at initial pH of 3.3 and 6, respectively, while iron filing presented negligible removal against total nitrogen including nitrate and ammonium.

토양정보를 이용한 광역 지하수의 질산태 질소 오염 민감도 분포 분석 (Regional-Scale Evaluation of Groundwater Susceptibility to Nitrate Contamination Based on Soil Survey Information)

  • 비점오염제어에 있어서 상대적으로 지하수오염의 가능성이 높은 지역을 선별하고 주된 오염원을 파악하는 것은 그 기여도가 대단히 크다. 이 연구는 제주도를 연구지역으로 하였으며, 현재 가장 중요한 오염물질 중의 하나인 질산태 질소를 대상오염물질로 하였다. 기존 및 실제 조사에 의한 토양정보를 토대로 pedotransfer function과 수분이동 모델을 이용하여 토양통별로 산출된 질산태질소오염 민감도 지수를 통해 민감도분포도를 작성하였으며(semi process-based 법), 이를 실제 모니터링된 2,020개의 수질자료와 비교하였고 제안된 semi process-based 법은 기존의 전문가의 의견과 판단에 의존하거나 방대한 파라메터를 요구하는 기존방법들의 단점을 극복하고 충분한 지형적 해상력을 제공하였을 뿐만 아니라, 알려진 질산태 질소 모니터링 자료와도 대부분 잘 부합하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻어진 결과들은 오염민감성이 높은 지역을 우선 선정하여 주의와 관리대책을 세우는 동시에 주요한 오염원을 파악함으로써 지하수자원을 합리적이고 효율적으로 보호하는데 있어서 유용한 수단이 될 것으로 판단되었다.

서울 S지역에서 발생한 영아 메트헤모글로빈혈증 1례의 원인구명을 위한 역학조사 (Epidemiologic Investigation to Identify the Cause of an Infant Methemoglobinemia)

  • Epidemiologic investigation was conducted on January, 1993 in Seoul to identify the cause of an infant methemoglobinemia. Field investigation of the area of outbreak, survey of household and family members, analysis of ground water, and blood tests of involved family members were performed. Following results were obtained On analyzing the quality of the ground water on patient's household high levels of nitrate was found indicating contamination of water as the cause of a methemoglobinemia outbreak. On analysing the quality of the ground waters on seven other places within the neighborhood five were contaminated by nitrate in concentration that exceeded the permissible limit implying presence nearby source of contamination. Sources of contamination were thought to be originating from human waste in conventional bathroom facilities, chicken manure used in nearby orchards and plant fields or fertilizers. But the results of water analysis with presence of bacteria or E.coli, concentration of potassium, phosphate and the past history of diarrhea among family members, chicken manure suggested the most possible source of contamination. To evaluate the health status of members in the neighborhood past history was reviewed revealing no prior existence of patient with cyanosis and 65 people in the neighborhood had normal levels of methemoglobin concentration in their blood. Conclusively, the ground water on patient's household was contaminated with nitrate and despite provision of adequate water supply, family members of the patient along with their distrust in the water supply system had used ground water as their source of drinking water resulting of methemoglobinemia. Many suburban area of Seoul and country side thought to be having similar problems concerning contaminated ground water supply and dormant outbreak of patients as a result of the drinking of the contaminated water. Epidemiologic investigation and water analysis of ground waters are advised.

복잡한 지형에서 발생하는 지하수의 질산태 질소 오염원 평가 (Contamination Source Assessment of Groundwater Nitrate in a Complex Terrain)

  • 토지이용에서 보았을 때 제주도는 해안을 따라 넓게 분포하는 밭과 과수원의 화학비료와, 중산간 지대 방목지의 가축분뇨 및 산발적으로 존재하는 주거지역의 생활하수에 의한 질산태 질소 오염이 추정되었다. 질소동위원소 분석이 이들 오염원들을 구분하기 위하여 사용되었으며, 주요 오염원인 요소, 유안, 축분정화조, 축분유기질 비료에 대해 측정된 $\delta^{15}N$ 값을 토대로 화학비료에 의한 오염은 5‰ 이하, 생활하수 혹은 가축분뇨에 의한 오염은 10‰ 이상으로 기준을 정하였다. 제주도 전역에 걸친 33개 관정의 질산태 질소 동위원소 분석결과는 대부분의 관정이 화학비료에 의해 오염되었으며, 일부 관정이 가축분뇨와 생활하수에 의해 영향받았음을 나타내었다. 이러한 결과는 질소동위원소분석이 토지이용분류로는 판별하기 어려운 오염원 추정에 매우 유용한 수단이 될 수 있음을 나타낸다. 특히 좁은 지역에서 토지이용이 다양하게 이루어 지고 있는 경우에 중요한 오염원 추정 수단이 될 수 있음을 경기, 강원 지역의 지하수 분석을 통해 확인할 수 있었으며, 또한 두 가지 이상의 오염원이 동시에 작용할 수 있고 그 기여도가 시기별로 달라질 수 있음을 확인하였다.

지하수 수질측정망 자료를 활용한 시간적 오염도 추이변화 분석 (Temporal Trend Analysis of Contamination using Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network Data)

  • Korea Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network is a database of annual groundwater quality survey results to prevent groundwater pollution. We estimated contamination index (CI) values for each type of land use, and analyzed temporal trends of pollutant concentration data in the Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network from 2001 to 2009. Among the pollutants considered in the database, the concentrations of nitrate and chloride were higher than their standards. In the case of nitrate, recreation parks, golf courses and general waste dumping regions showed increasing trends according to linear regression analysis, whereas industrial complexes and residential regions of urgan and recreation parks showed increasing trends in the chloride concentration data. According to multiple variable linear regression analysis, EC, pH and topography were major factors influencing CI values. These results suggest that groundwater with a high CI value and increasing trend is vulnerable for potential contamination, which requires more careful groundwater pollution control.

제주도 관정 공벽 내 오염물질 유입 구간 탐지 및 차단 사례 (Case for Detection and Prevention of Inflow Section for Contaminant through Annular Space in Borehole, Jeju Island)

  • Most wells developed in Jeju island before the enactment of the Groundwater Management Ordinance in 2002 are vulnerable to aquifer contamination due to inflow of upper groundwater having the high concentration of nitrate nitrogen, likely due to incomplete grouting in upper section of the wells. Although these wells require entire reinstallation, it is often necessary to rehabilitate the existing wells due to various constraints. Therefore, to identified the inflow section of contaminants, the thermal level sensor (TLS) technique was firstly applied for three wells, which enables to monitor temperature variations in every 50 cm depth. Then, the grouting material was injected to the upper section to prevent the inflow of upper contaminated groundwater into the entire aquifer. By applying TLS technique, it was found that the temperature deviations in the upper groundwater inflow section decreased sharply. Moreover, both the change in the concentration of nitrate nitrogen in the rainy/dry seasons and the average concentrations were found to decrease rapidly after grouting material injection. Consequently, the application of TLS proposed in the study turned out to be appropriate to prevent aquifer contamination.

The redox state is a key parameter to control the nitrate contamination which is related to nitrification or denitrification processes. 지하수중의 질산성질소 제거를 위한 영가철 충진 복극전해조의 현장적용에 관한 연구 (Removal of Nitrate in Groundwater by Bipolar ZVI Packed Bed Electrolytic Cell at Field Pilot)

  • Nitrate contamination of groundwater is a common problem throughout intensive agriculture areas (non-point source pollution). Current processes (e.g. ion exchange and membrane separation) for nitrate removal have various disadvantages. The objective of this study was to evaluate electrochemical method such as electroreduction using bipolar ZVI packed bed electrolytic cell to remove nitrate from groundwater at field pilot. In addition ammonia stripping tower continuously removed up to 77.0% of ammonia. Bipolar ZVI packed bed electrolytic cell also removed E.coli. In the field pilot experiment for groundwater in 'I' city (average nitrate 30~35 mg N/L, pH 6.4), maximum 99.9% removal of nitrate was achieved in the applied 600 V.

  • In the present study, several groundwater vulnerability assessment methods were applied to an agricultural area of Gumma in Korea. For the groundwater intrinsic vulnerability assessment, the performance of DRASTIC, SINTACS and GOD models was compared and an ensemble approach was suggested. M-DRASTIC and multi-linear regression (MLR) models were applied for the groundwater specific vulnerability assessment to nitrate of the study site. The correlation coefficient between the nitrate concentration and M-DRASTIC index was as low as 0.24. The result of the MLR model showed that the correlation coefficient is 0.62 and the areal extents of livestock farming and upland field are most influential factors for the nitrate contamination of groundwater in the study site.

  • Facilities for low impact development (LID) or groundwater recharge have the high potential spreading groundwater nitrate contamination because of the rapid infiltration. This study was initiated to remove nitrate from the waters using agricultural byproducts as organic sources for denitrification during infiltration. As the first step of this purpose, we experimentally tested the denitrifying efficiency of 4 organic materials (pine tree woodchips, cherry leaves, rice straws, and rice hulls) and tried to identify the key factors controlling the efficiency. For this study, we precisely investigated the change of chemical reactions during the experiment by analyzing various geochemical parameters. The result shows that the denitrification efficiency is not simply linked to the availability of the easily decomposable contents in the organic matter. It is found that avoiding the severe pH decrease due to the CO2 generation is the essence to derive the efficient denitrifying conditions when organic matters were used.
