In this study, the effects of several factors such as initial nitrate concentration, C/N ratio, biomass amount and external carbon source on denitrification process were investigated using synthetic wastewater and sludge obtained from wastewater treatment facility. As a result, the condition of lower initial nitrate concentration was increased to the removal rate of nitrate than that of high concentration. The increases of C/N ratio and initial biomass amount were linearly enhanced the removal rate. The use of ethanol as external carbon source was shown the highest removal yield than that of others.
In the present work, the improvement of nitrate removal ability was investigated to resolve a eutrophication problem by using Ulmus davidiana (U. davidiana) bark generated from Gangwon province. When the initial pH of aqueous solution was adjusted to 3.5 in batch experiments, the removal efficiencies for 10 and 20 mg/L nitrate increased up to 43 and 37%, respectively. In addition, when U. davidiana bark of 1.0 g/100 mL was used for 8 h, the removal efficiency for 20 mg/L nitrate was 68%. Moreover, when reforming reaction of U. davidiana bark was performed under oxyfluorination conditions, the optimal ratio of partial pressure between fluorine and oxygen was 1 : 9 for an enhanced nitrate adsorption amount. When reformed U. davidiana bark was used for 8 h operation under the optimal oxyfluorination condition, removal efficiencies for 10, 20 and 40 mg/L nitrate were found to be 96, 95 and 59%, respectively. Collectively, these results suggest that our water treatment technology can be effectively utilized to treat high concentrations of nitrate in water bodies.
To investigate removal effects of nutrients in stormwater runoff by soil of riparian protection zone, soil column experiment was conducted for 20 months. Artificial stormwater runoff containing phosphate and nitrate was applied on the surface of soil column twice a week, and phosphate and nitrate concentrations were measured from the leached water. Soil of riparian protection zone reduced the released amount of infiltrated water to the surrounding water. After infiltration of 1m depth of soil column, average removal rates of phosphate and nitrate were 97.7 % and 74.7 %, respectively. As main mechanisms of phosphate are adsorption to soil particle and utilization by plants, periodical replacement of soil and harvesting of plant at the end of growing season are required. For the removal of nutrients in stormwater runoff by the soil layer, soil of riparian protection zone has higher hydraulic conductivity to infiltrate stormwater. Sandy soil having hydraulic conductivity of about $1{\times}10^{-2}cm/s$ range might be appropriate for this purpose.
To remove nitrate from wastewater, a novel bioelectrochemical denitrification system is introduced. In this proposed system, biological reactions are coupled with reactions on the electrode, whereby the electrons are transferred to the bacterial enzymes via a mediator as an electron carrier. The denitrification reaction was achieved with permeabilized Ochrobactrum anthropi SY509 containing denitrifying enzymes, such as nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, and nitrous oxide reductase, and methyl viologen was used as the mediator. The electron transfer from the electrode to the enzymes in the bacterial cells was confirmed using cyclic voltammetry. A high removal efficiency of nitrate was achieved when the bioelectrochemical system was used with the permeabilized cells. Furthermore, when the permeabilized cells were immobilized to a graphite felt electrode using a calcium alginate matrix containing graphite powder, a high removal efficiency was achieved (4.38 nmol/min mg cell) that was comparable to the result when using the free permeabilized cells.
A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate the nitrate removal from groundwater using Iron chloride(III) coated activated carbon (ICCAC). The breakthrough profiles of two ionic species, such as nitrate and sulfate showed that nitrate was selectively exchanged with chloride in ICCAC. The $FeCl_3$-coated activated carbon produced about 26 BV (Bed volume) of throughout when treating groundwater containing about $25\;mg/\iota\;of\;NO_3-N$. The regeneration of ICCAC with 1M KC1 was effective at a flow rate of 4 BV/hr. The ion exchange technology seems to be suitable technology for the treatment of small volumes of groundwater polluted by nitrate.
This research was investigated which denitrification of wastewater containing nitrate, using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket process. The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket process is also used for both artifical and industrial wastewater. Main ingredients investigated in the artifical and industrial wastewater experiment were the determination of optimum organism/nitrate ratios, nitrate removal efficiency by various hydrogen donor addition and characteristics of granular sludge and gas production in case of various hydrogen donor addition. From the experimental results the following conclusions were made: In case of adding methanol, ethanol and sodium acetate as hydrogen donor granular sludge was formed 50 days after seeding. Average diameter of granular sludge was 4.0 mm and settling velocity was 37 cm/min. Production rate of gas 3.3 L/d in case of adding methanol as hydrogen donor in wastewater containing 150mg/L nitrate. However adding ethanol and sodium acetate as hydrogen donor, gas production rate were 2.2-2.7L/d respectively. In case of adding methanol as hydrogen donor treatability of artifical wastewater contained 150mg/L as nitrate was about 93%. But in addition of sodium acetate in wastewater contained 40mg.L as nitrate, nitrate removal efficiency was 80%.

The objective of this study lies in identifying the applicability of zeolite for the removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. To this end, the author tracked adsorption variations as seen with the adsorption removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. As a result, it was indicated that the maximum adsorption of zeolite acting on the adsorption removal of ammonium nitrogen would reach 120mg/g (weight of ammonium nitrogen divided by that of zeolite), and that Langmuir adsorption isotherm explained the adsorption of ammonium and nitrate nitrogens better than Freundlich adsorption isotherm. This means that zeolite makes ion exchanges with adsorbate for unilayer adsorption. It was also indicated that the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen with varying pH would be higher in the order of pH7 > pH5 > pH9 > pH3.
This research focused on the solid and nitrate removal efficiency in a solid digestion-denitrification column. The 20 L up-flow column consisted of 18 L acrylic column with 2 L down-comer inlet tube located in the middle. In the first part, the wastewater with high suspended solids from the Tilapia fish tank was applied into the sedimentation unit at 5 variable flow rates i.e., 11.25, 25.71, 60, 105.88 and 360 L/h. The results indicated that the flow rate of 11.25 L/h (0.57 m/h) gave the highest solid removal efficiency of $72.72%{\pm}8.24%$. However, the total suspended solids removal was highest at 360 L/h (18.13 m/h). In the second part, methanol was added as an external organic carbon source for denitrification process in a hybrid column containing settled solids. The COD:N ratios of 0.5:1, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1 and 6:1 were investigated and compared with control without methanol addition. This experiment was operated at the HRT of 1 h with 450 L wastewater from recirculating aquaculture pond containing 100 mg-N/L sodium nitrate. The results indicated that the COD:N ratio of 3:1 gave the highest nitrate removal efficiency of $33.32%{\pm}21.18%$ with the denitrification rate of 5,102.88 mg-N/day.

A new wastewater treatment system was developed to remove nitrate nitrogen and phosphorus in synthetic wastewater through electrochemical treatment. Higher removal efficiencies of nitrate nitrogen were obtained as the current density increased. Higher nitrate removal efficiencies were obtained when the switching interval was 1 min. The total phosphorus removal rate according to the current density was found to be over 90% without being greatly affected by the change in current density and interval, and the total removal rate increased with increasing switching time (1 min interval). On the other hand, COD was not treated by electrochemical treatment, but rather increased as the electrode eluted. Also, the consumption rate of the electrode was smaller as the switching interval was shorter. Finally, removal efficiencies of 98.1% of nitrate and 90% of phosphorus were obtained through electrochemical treatment (current density $50mA/cm^2$, switching interval 1 min, flow rate 540 mL/min).

Utilization of organic waste as a renewable energy source is promising for sustainability and mitigation of climate change. Pyrolysis converts organic waste to gas, oil, and biochar by incomplete biomass combustion. Biochar is widely used as a soil conditioner and adsorbent. Biochar adsorbs/desorbs metals and ions depending on the soil environment and condition to act as a nutrient buffer in soils. Biochar is also regarded as a carbon storage by fixation of organic carbon. Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) are strictly controlled in many wastewater treatment plants because it causes eutrophication in water bodies. P and N is removed by biological and chemical methods in wastewater treatment plants and transferred to sludge for disposal. On the other hand, P is an irreplaceable essential element for all living organisms and its resource (phosphate rock) is estimated about 100 years of economical mining. Therefore, P and N recovery from waste and wastewater is a critical issue for sustainable human society. For the purpose, intensive researches have been carried out to remove and recover P and N from waste and wastewater. Previous studies have shown that biochars can adsorb and desorbed phosphates implying that biochars could be a complementary fertilizer. However, most of the conventional biochar have limited capacity to adsorb phosphates and nitrate. Recent studies have focused on biochar impregnated with metal salts to improve phosphates and nitrate adsorption by synthesizing biochars with novel structures and surface properties. Metal salts and metal oxides have been used for the surface modification of biochars. If P removal is the only concern, P adsorption kinetics and capacity are the only important factors. If both of P and N removal and the application of recovery are concerned, however, P and N desorption characteristics and bioavailability are also critical factors to be considered. Most of the researches on impregnated biochars have focused on P removal efficiency and kinetics. In this study, coffee waste is thermally treated to produce biochar and it was impregnated with Mg/Al to enhance phosphates and nitrate adsorption/desorption and P bioavailability to increase its value as a fertilizer. Kinetics of phosphates and nitrate adsorption/desorption and bioavailability analysis were carried out to estimate its potential as a P and N removal adsorbent in wasewater and a fertilizer in soil.
