Conceptual application methodology of 22.9㎸ HTS cable in metropolitan city of Republic of Korea

  • As the power demand has increased and power industry deregulation has progressed, the transmission and distribution system will have more complicated problems by the influence of investment reduction and NIMBY phenomena for overall power system. It is expected that the route length per MW demand will reduce gradually from 0.6[C-km/MW] to 0.53 [C-km/MW] in 2010. This comes up to a real serious problem of system planning and operational viewpoints. HTS technologies related to power system have properties to solve these complex transmission and distribution constraints, especially for metropolitan area, in the future. As the HTS technology has developed, the HTS cable technology can be the most effective alternative to solve the future expected power network constraints. This paper describes the application methodology of developing 22.9㎸ HTS cable by CAST for practical distribution system. 22.9㎸ HTS cable under development with step-by-step application methodology can substitute the existing and planning conventional 154㎸ cable. If this scheme is applied, part of downtown 154㎸ substation of metropolitan city such as Seoul can be changed into 22.9㎸ switching station. It can give great economic, environmental and additional benefits to all of the concerned authorities.

  • Nuclear energy is considerably cheap and clean compared to other fossil fuels. Yet, there are rising safety concerns of nuclear power plants including the possibility of radiation releasing nuclear accidents. In light of the Fukushima nuclear crisis in 2011, Japan has been re-evaluating their existing energy policies and increasing the share of alternative energy. This paper first tracks the major historical changes of energy policy in Japan by time period. Next, energy security, reignited concerns and alternative energy are covered to examine Japan's energy security situation and its transition after the Fukushima disaster. Lastly, a short survey based on thematic analysis was conducted in South Korea and Japan to understand the public awareness of nuclear. This paper postulates that the case of Fukushima will contribute to establish and operate a safe-future nuclear program in South Korea, given that the country is not only geographically neighbouring Japan but also the world's fourth largest producer of nuclear energy.

  • Korean urban traditional housing abandoned by the social apathy promptly disappearing form our sight, or ruining. It tells that the strategies we are using today are impossible to fulfill socio-economic needs of residents here. So it needed to find out the strategies which can change this place better to live in. Consolidating the street parking lots fer cars can be one of the important solutions to the area. By using cul-de-sac, after setting up small unit of communities, we will have chance to have a small public space, and at the same time it can help to set up our tradition of people's intimacy inside the community. Most people have their own cars, and the need of parking lots becomes more serious. So, a meeting place like public well in the past must replace parking lots. On the other hand, it is important to re-consolidate existing land to obtain appropriate land size for other uses. Today, the use of private space (house, private lots, etc..)and public space(streets, local offices) is very important. NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) attitude should also be reconsidered. All these negative social aspects come from negative social relationship, thus we should consider them with care and deep understandings. The traditional housing of Korea should not be abandoned as slum, but this should be transformed in terms of the conservation since it is superior in its ecological and energy conservation aspect.

Merits of this Group Homes far the Elderly with Dementia Recognized by Middle and Upper Class Families, and Potential Obstacles to its Introduction in Korea (중산층 이상 가족이 인식하는 치매노인 그룹흠의 장점과 국내 도입의 문제점)

  • middle and upper class families, and examine obstacles to their introduction in Korea. Since a few large-scale facilities for the elderly with dementia have been provided for only low-income families free of charge, the necessity of group homes for middle and upper class families willing to pay for such services has become an issue recently in order to lessen the burden on families, as well as to promote the well-being of the dementia victims themselves. The survey was conducted by questionnaires collected from 577 respondents from middle and upper class families. The results of the survey were as follows: The merits of the group homes were 1)decreasing loneliness of the elderly, 2)providing active and stimulating environments allowing for participation everyday life activities, and 3)lessening the emotional and physical burden on the caring families. Potential obstacles to its introduction in Korea were 1)the difficulty of finding sites to build the group home because of the negative perception of people with disabilities and a NIMBY(Not In My Back Yard) reaction to the construction of it and 2)the economic burden on the caring family. Surprisingly, the guilt factor associated with sending the parents into group homes was not considered as a big obstacle. Referring to results of this study, it is asserted that group homes for the elderly with dementia would be embraced throughout the country if Koreans could have the chance to understand what group homes are.

Solubilization of wasted sludge using high voltage impulse technique (고전압 임펄스 기술을 활용한 슬러지 가용화)

  • Several disposal processes for waste sludge from wastewater treatment plants such as landfill, ocean dump, incineration, reuse as fuels or fertilizers are practiced. However, ocean dumping is prohibited by international treat. New constructions of landfill sites or incineration facilities are limited by NIMBY and reuse processes are still suffering from low energy yield. Therefore, development of alternative processes for sludge disposal are currently needed. In this study, alternative technique for sludge solubilization using HVI (high voltage impulse) was suggested and verified experimentally. Sludge solubilization was carried out for 90 minutes using HVI discharge with peak voltage of 16 kV and pulse duration for 40 microsecond. About 3~9 % of MLSS and MLVSS concentration were reduced, but the soluble COD, TN, TP of the sludge increased to 372 %, 56 % and 102 % respectively. It indicates that the flocs and/or cells of the sludge were damaged by HVI. These resulted in flocs-disintegration and cells-lysis, which means the internal matters were bursted out of the flocs as well as the cells. Thus, electrical conductivity in bulk solution was increased. All of the results verified that the HVI could be used as an alternative technique for sludge solubilization processes.

  • Waste to Energy Plant were recognized as hateful facilities, and there were many conflicts in the location due to social problems such as the NIMBY phenomenon due to problems such as damage to property in the surrounding area, odor, and image loss. Problems such as air pollution and odor are solved by the development of advanced prevention facilities such as electric dust collectors, wet cleaning systems, semi-dry reaction towers, bag filters, and catalyst towers (SCR: Selective Catalytic Reduction), and air recycling facilities in waste storage tanks. However, it is being avoided because of the perception that it is an incinerator. To resolve these conflicts, the government installs and operates resident convenience facilities to compensate residents near resource recovery facilities, provides green space and improves the environment, and supports heating expenses in accordance with the 「Waste Treatment Facility Support Act」. The purpose of this study is to derive implications through the analysis of domestic and overseas case studies for resident convenience facilities and environment improvement for the promotion of local communities in resource recovery facilities and use them as basic data for community promotion and environmental improvement when installing resource recovery facilities in the future.

Study on solubilization of sewage sludge with electrolysis (전기분해 활용 하수슬러지 가용화 연구)

  • 하수처리장에서 발생하는 유기성 슬러지는 대부분 해양투기에 의해 처분되고 나머지는 매립, 소각, 퇴비화 등으로 처분된다. 그러나 런던협약 '96 의정서' 발효에 의해 2012년부터 해양투기가 금지되고, 매립장 및 소각장의 신규건설은 님비(NIMBY) 현상에 의해 제한받기 때문에 효과적인 슬러지 처분 및 가용화 방법이 요구되고 있다. 현재 초음파[1]나 열처리[2], 오존[3,4], 미생물 처리[5,6] 등 물리, 화학, 생물학적 처리방안이 연구되고 있으나 이러한 방법들은 에너지 과소비, 2차 오염물질 발생에 따른 처리비용 증가 등의 단점을 가지고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 기존의 연구 방법을 보안하고자 전기분해를 활용하여 슬러지 가용화를 시도함으로써 슬러지 발생을 저감시킬 수 있는 방법을 연구하였다. 본 실험에서는 전기분해를 위해 제작된 불용성 전극은 Titanium에 Iridium을 코팅하여 제작하였고, 최대 20V까지 전압을 고정시키고 시간에 따라 변화되는 전류와 전기전도도, pH 값을 관찰하였다. 실험에 사용된 활성슬러지는 3개월간 합성폐수로 순응화 시킨 후에 시료로 사용하였다. 전기분해에 의해 처리된 활성슬러지의 여액을 분석한 결과 SCOD, TN, TP 농도가 각각 510%, 9%, 106% 증가하였다. 이는 전기분해에 의해 미생물의 세포벽이 파괴되어 세포 내 물질들이 세포 외부로 용출되어 미생물들의 이용이 가능한 상태로 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 국내 하 폐수의 낮은 C/N비 때문에 무산소조에 메탄올 같은 외부 탄소원을 공급하는 대신에 별도의 탄소원 공급 없이 가용화 된 슬러지를 반송시킴으로써 슬러지 저감에 따른 폐기 비용과 운전비용의 절감을 기대할 수 있어, 근본적인 슬러지 발생을 저감시킬 수 있는 해결책이라 할 수 있다.

A Study on the Space Plan of Charnel House Connected with Community Space (커뮤니티 공간을 연계한 봉안당(奉安堂) 공간계획에 관한 연구)

  • Because the hatred and phenomenon of NIMBY for charnel house become an issue, it is the actual condition that charnel facilities are not activated in urban. The purpose of this study Is to examine the space plan of charnel house that introduces the community concept; and then shows the way of interior design for charnel house connected with community space. The following researches are drawn based upon the purpose First, the present conditions and general functions of charnel house are considered closely and revised funeral policy that affects the organization of interior space in charnel house is analysed. Second, the case study for chanel house is limited to the indoor types among the existing researches for charnel house plan. Four charnel houses where were built after 2000 are selected for building standard of space organization in charnel house connected with community facility. Third, the concept and function of community space are considered and the space which can accommodate in charnel house is investigated. Fourth, the concept and organizational framework model of charnel house connected with community facility as a intermediate area In urban Indicate. Fifth, the concrete interior plan for charnel house connected with community space is proposed on the design case of charnel house that are located in urban area. The result of this study is expected to reduce a complicated matter with local residents and to have a correct understanding of charnel house in the future as the existing charnel facilities that have financial difficulty should make a remodeling plan including the community space that give mutual connection to area.

  • As the local self-government are stabilized and the environmental value is becoming more important among local residents, the occurrence of the anti-movements against waste treatment facilities is getting more frequent. Opposing to build the reuse facilities of wastes takes place because of concerning of health and hygiene, as well as matters of unclear policy making process. However, these facilities must be built in somewhere for the convenience and profit of the public. The NIMBY phenomenon against reuse facilities of wastes could be a burden for the city operation system, and it could worsen citizens' quality of life in the long run. In these lights, reuse and recycling facilities of wastes in East region are necessary facilities improving citizens' quality of life and enhancing the growth of cities in the region. However, there have been concerning of deforestation during the construction process of the facilities. The landscape design presented here for these facilities considers the features of the environmental ecosystem and tries to establish a plan to preserve the natural environment of the City of Ichon. This paper presents methods minimizing adverse effects of the facilities on the existing environments and promoting the city image with integrating culture, tourism, landscape and environment of the city. The landscape design makes efforts to harmonize natural environments in the site, human activities and culture. Well-being park was aimed to lead healthy and energetic outdoor activities of local residents. Ecological park was aimed to enhance the ecological functions of the forests and restore the valley ecology. Culture park was aimed to capture the city identity by creating a place that contains all the variety of meanings of the City of Ichon.

A Basic Study on development of Recycling-Industrial Park to Promote Recycling (재활용촉진수단으로서 산업단지조성에 관한 기초연구)

  • The aim of this study is to provide basic concept for recycling-industrial park, such as necessity of recycling industry, role of park, construction scheme, etc, in metropolitan area. For this study, questionnaire survey, examination of regulations and walk over survey on industrial parks were conducted. In metropolitan area, recycling industry made incomes of 445 billion won per year and supplied work place for 44 thousand persons. Based on present status and questionnaire analysis, waste recyclers had difficulties in securing factory site, impending the term of contract, NIMBY and proper treating a lot of solid wastes and wastewater, and construction of recycling-industrial park was supposed to be a tool to overcome those problems faced to waste recyclers. By considering the availability of existing industrial park, constraints of constructing new park in metropolitan area, potential recycling amounts and low opinion of moving in to parks, it is reasonable that Inchon-kanghwa district or Seoul adjacent district is potential sites, area for recycling-industrial park are within 640 thousand Pyong, and plastic recyclers are main invited item.
