  • It is important to secure illumination for the driver's safety because the tunnel is a space for changing brightness quickly, and lighting fixtures of the tunnel have consumed a lot of electric lighting energy for operating in both the daytime and at night. This study aims to evaluate daylighting performance of Mirror Reflector System for luminous environment improvement of tunnel space by using RADIANCE simulation program. The results of simulation show that illuminance of bar type is higher than illuminance of pole type at 20 m from the tunnel entrance.

  • The phototaxis of common carp Cyprinus carpio was studied tinder laboratory conditions to find out distributional pattern of the fish under light gradient and to find the light intensity which causes the maximum gathering rate. The optimum light intensities were determined, The fish tended to escape from tile light source when the light intensity was stronger or weaker than a certain optimum value. The mean illumination intensity which caused the maximum gathering rate was 3.813lux (2.99-4.76 lux) in the daytime and 6.292 lux (5.0-7.89 lux) at night. The gathering rate of the fish could be divided into two types: reflex gathering rate and equilibrium gathering rate. The reflex gathering rate appeared quickly soon after lighting and gradually changed as time elapsed, while the equilibrium gathering rate was almost always constant.

  • This study investigated the actual condition focusing on the lighting environment which is a major element in aspect of indoor environment of a public library and assessed user satisfaction. Research results are as follows: Firstly, numbers of lighting fixtures per dimension of a reading room in a public library were inconsistent due to the lack of definite regulations, which was found to have negative effect on night time illuminance. Secondly, it was assessed that illuminance between the day time influenced by natural lighting and in the nighttime without natural lighting has more than 10-fold difference. Therefore, such a condition is judged to be inappropriate for lighting environment of a reading room where users spend a long time studying and thus, it is considered that an appropriate measures should be taken. Thirdly, as the survey result on users' satisfaction with lighting environment was revealed to be lesser than 3 points, lighting plan in consideration of its users should be progressed.

  • There is substantial evidence from earlier researches that older adults have difficult seeing under low illumination and at night, even in the absence of ocular diseases. During human aging, there is a rampant decrease in rod/cone-meditated adaptation which is caused by delayed rhodopsin regeneration and pigment depletion. This calls for a need to develop appropriate visual gadgets to effectively aid the aging generation. Our research culminates its approach from Pattanaik's model by making extensions to temporal visual filtering, thereby simulating a reduction of visual response which comes with age. Our filtering model paves way and lays a foundation for future research to develop a more effective adaptation model that may be further used in developing visual content adaptation aids and guidelines in MPEG 21 environment. We demonstrate our visual model using a High Dynamic Range image and the experiment results are in conversant with the psychophysical data from previous vision researches.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for recovering the colors of objects from multiple near-infrared (near-IR) images. The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) color coordinates of objects are recovered from a series of gray images captured under multiple spectral near-IR illuminations using polynomial regression. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is tested experimentally by using 24 color patches of the Color Rendition Chart. The experimental apparatus is composed of a monochrome digital camera without an IR cut-off filter and a custom-designed LED illuminator emitting multiple spectral near-IR illuminations, with peak wavelengths near the red edge of the visible band, namely at 700, 740, 780, and 860 nm. The average color difference between the original and the recovered colors for all 24 patches was found to be 11.1. However, if some particular patches with high value are disregarded, the average color difference is reduced to 4.2, and this value is within the acceptability tolerance for complex image on the display.

  • In this paper, a low power of safety oriented sidewalk block was implemented using dimming technology using LED and illuminance sensor to prevent glare by high - intensity light source and prevent night traffic accident. The dimming system of this paper used a light bulb color with less fatigue to prevent glare and consumed 6.10Wh power. Also, it is confirmed that the power saving is about 56.9% when compared with the existing system.

  • With the development of autonomous vehicle, there has been active research on advanced driver assistance system for road marking detection using vision sensor and 3D Laser scanner. However, vision sensor has the weak points that detection is difficult in situations involving severe illumination variance, such as at night, inside a tunnel or in a shaded area; and that processing time is long because of a large amount of data from both vision sensor and 3D Laser scanner. Accordingly, this paper proposes a road marking detection and classification method using single 2D Laser scanner. This method road marking detection and classification based on accumulation distance data and intensity data acquired through 2D Laser scanner. Experiments using a real autonomous vehicle in a real environment showed that calculation time decreased in comparison with 3D Laser scanner-based method, thus demonstrating the possibility of road marking type classification using single 2D Laser scanner.

  • Leaf movements in nyctinastic plants are produced by changes in the turgor of extensor and flexor cells, collectively called motor cells, in opposing regions of the leaf movement organ, the pulvinus. In Samanea saman, a tropical tree of the legume family, extensor cells shrink and flexor cells swell to bend the pulvinus and fold the leaf at night, whereas extensor cells swell and flexor cells shrink to straighten the pulvinus and extend the leaf in the daytime. These changes are caused by ion fluxes primarily of potassium and chloride, across the plasma membrane of the motor cells. These ion fluxes are regulated by exogenous light signals and an endogenous biolgical clock. Inward-directed K$^+$ channels are closed in extensor and open in flexor cells in the dark period, while these channels are open in extensor and closed in flexor cells in the light period. Blue light opens the closed K$^+$ channels in extensor and closes the open them in flexor cells during darkness. Illumination of red light followed by darkness induces to open the closed K$^+$ channels in flexor and to close the open K$^+$ channels in extensor cells in the light. The dynamics of K$^+$ channels in motor cells that are controlled by light signals are consistent with the behavior of the pulvini in intact plants. Therefore, these cell types are an attractive model system to elucidate regulations of ion transports and their signal transduction pathways in plants. This review is focused on light-controlled ion movements and regulatory mechanisms involved in phosphoinositide signaling in leaf movements in nyctinastic plants.
