  • Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) method using hard x-ray at 5.46 keV was applied to study assembly of Ni and Ni oxide nano structures formed on a Si3N4 membrane. Density distribution of Ni nano-particles was obtained quantitatively with about 15 nm lateral resolution by reconstructing images from the speckle diffraction pattern. In addition, reconstructed images of nickel oxide particles indicated that Ni atoms diffuse out during the oxidation process leaving pores inside the nickel oxide crust. Furthermore, we recognize that really weak phase object, less than 5 nm thickness of Ni residues, can be reconstructed due to the reference particles. We achieved quantitative information of nanometer sized materials and demonstrate the effect of reference particles by using hard x-ray coherent diffractive imaging method.

  • The recent extensive research of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures such as nanowires (NWs) and nanotubes (NTs) has been the driving force to fabricate new kinds of nanoscale devices in electronics, optics and bioengineering. We attempt to produce silicon oxide nanowires (SiOxNWs) in a simple way without complicate deposition process, gaseous Si containing precursors, or starting material of $SiO_2$. Nickel (Ni) nanoparticles (NPs) were applied on Si wafer and thermally treated in a furnace. The temperature in the furnace was kept in the ranges between 900 and $1,100^{\circ}C$ and a mixture of nitrogen ($N_2$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) flowed through the furnace. The SiOxNWs had widths ranging from 100 to 200 nm with length extending up to ~10 ${\mu}m$ and their structure was amorphous. Ni NPs were acted as catalysts. Since there were no other Si materials introduced into the furnace, the Si wafer was the only Si sources for the growth of SiOxNWs. When the Si wafer with deposition of Ni NPs was heated, the liquid Ni-Si alloy droplets were formed. The droplets as the nucleation sites induce an initiation of the growth of SiOxNWs and absorb oxygen easily. As the droplets became supersaturated, the SiOxNWs were grown, by the reaction between Si and O and continuously dissolving Si and O onto NPs. Photoluminescence (PL) showed that blue emission spectrum was centered at the wavelength of 450 nm (2.76 eV). The details of growth mechanism of SiOxNWs and the effect of Ni NPs on the formation of SiOxNWs will be presented.

  • Nickel oxide was deposited on mesoporous silica by atomic layer deposition (ALD) consisting of sequential exposures to Ni(cp)2 and $H_2O$. NiO/silica samples were characterized by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The flow-type reactor was used to measure activity of NiO/silica catalyst for catalytic combustion of toluene. The activity of NiO/silica catalyst was evaluated in terms of toluene removal efficiency and selectivity to $CO_2$ and compared with those of bare nickel oxide nanoparticles. In order to investigate influence of reaction temperature on combustion aspect, the catalytic combustion experiments were carried out at various temperatures. We show that both bare and supported NiO can be efficient catalysts for total oxidation of toluene at a temperature as low as $250^{\circ}C$.

  • This experimental study investigates the replacement of conventional Portland cement and sand with non-sintered cement and ferro-nickel slag to formulate eco-friendly cement mortar. The examination aimed to understand the strength properties of non-sintered cement mortar using ferro-nickel slag as fine aggregate by classifying mortar production types, fine aggregates, and curing methodologies. From flexural and compressive strength tests, it was observed that non-sintered cement mortars, incorporating ferro-nickel slag as fine aggregate, exhibited superior strength when compared to both plain mortar and steam-cured non-sintered mortar. This increased strength is attributed to the influence of the particle size, density, and absorption capabilities of the ferro-nickel slag. Furthermore, X-ray Diffraction(XRD) analyses of the mortars verified the presence of MgO, a component of ferro-nickel slag, in the form of a composite oxide. This finding substantiates the consistent strength manifestation of non-sintered cement mortars utilizing ferro-nickel slag as a fine aggregate.

  • $MnO_2$, a metal oxide used as an electrode material in electrochemical capacitors (EDLCs), has been applied in binary oxide and conducting polymer hybrid electrodes to increase their stability and capacitance. We developed a method for electrodepositing Mn-Ni oxide/PANI, Mn-Ni oxide/PEDOT, and Mn-Ni-Ru oxide/PEDOT films on carbon paper in a single step using a mixed bath. Mn-Ni oxide/PEDOT and Mn-Ni-Ru oxide/PEDOT electrodes used in an electro-osmotic pump (EOP) have shown better efficiency compared to Mn-Ni oxide and Mn-Ni oxide/PANI electrodes through testing in water as a pumping solution. EOP using a Mn-Ni-Ru oxide/PEDOT electrode was also tested in a 0.5 mM $Li_2SO_4$ solution as a pumping solution to confirm the effect of the $Li^+$ insertion/de-insertion reaction of Ruthenium oxide on the EOP. Experimental results show that the flow rate increases with the increase in current in a 0.5 mM $Li_2SO_4$ solution compared to that obtained when water was used as a pumping solution.

  • The conductive transparent film is prepared by spraying thin salt solution. In stannic chloride solution as a base solution, various dopants such as Al, Co, Cu and Ni were dissolved respectively as a chloride state and then the films were made by spraying solutions on hot glass plates. The properties of them were compared with those of the stannic salt single component film. The films doped with copper oxide and nickle oxide were improved by decreasing their sheet resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity. In comparison with the sheet resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity of stannic oxide single component film, being 2.5 K ohm/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and -1650ppm/$^{\circ}C$ respectively, its values of the film containing 15 mol % of copper oxide and formed at 40$0^{\circ}C$ were 2.5K ohm/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and -920ppm/$^{\circ}C$ respectively. The film containing 15 mol % of nickel oxide and formed at 50$0^{\circ}C$ has shown its sheet resistivity and temperature coefficient 0.7 K ohm/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and -940ppm/$^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • The contact resistance between organic semiconductor and source-drain electrode in Bottom Contact Organic Thin-Film Transistors (BCOTFTs) can be effectively reduced by metal oxide/molybdenum double layer structure; metal oxide layers including nickel oxide (NiOx/Mo) and moly oxide(MoOx) under molybdenum work as a high performance carrier injection layer. Step profiles of source-drain electrode can be easily achieved by simultaneous etching of the double layers using the difference etching rate between metal oxides and metal layers.

  • Temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) is used to characterize coke species deposited on commercial nickel catalyst, C11-PR during propane pre-reforming. Propane pre-reforming performed under various condition, S/C from 1.5 to 2.5 and temperature from $350^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$. There are three kinds of coke species detected by TPO: (i) reactive coke, (ii) coke deposited on metal site and (iii) coke deposited on acid support. Coke deposited on metal and support are minimized although reactive coke is generated at temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ and S/C of 2.0. Reactive coke is expected to remove easily below temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Therefore, optimized pre-reforming condition for propane is $400^{\circ}C$ and S/C of 2.0.

  • The dissolution characteristic of metal shows the different tendency according to the applied electrical potential, the kind of electrolyte and pH value, etc. In the micro electrochemical machining (ECM), unfavorable oxide/passive layer formation and overall corrosion of electrodes must be prevented. The anodic polarization curve of nickel has distinct three dissolution regions, i.e. two active regions and the transpassive dissolution region. In this paper, the stable electrode potentials of workpiece and tool were determined in sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid solution, respectively. In each solution, different machining property was shown and possible electrochemical reactions were discussed. On the basis of this experiment, the methodology to obtain the proper electrode potential was suggested.
