  • A feasibility study has been conducted regarding the application of waste coffee grounds as an adsorbent for the treatment of nickel ion containing wastewater. The major variables which considered to influence the adsorbability of nickel ion were its initial concentration, reaction temperature, pH, and coexisting ion. The specific surface area of coffee grounds used in the experiment was found to be ca. $39.67m^2/g$, which suggesting its potential applicability as an adsorbent due to its relatively high surface area. In the experimental conditions, more than 90% of the initial amount of nickel ion was shown to adsorb within 15 minutes and equilibrium in adsorption was attained after 3 hours. The adsorption behavior of nickel ion was well explained by Freundlich model and kinetics study showed that the adsorption reaction was second-order. Adsorption was reduced with temperature and its change of enthalpy in standard state was estimated to be -807.05 kJ/mol. Arrhenius equation was employed for the calculation of the activation energy of adsorption and nickel ion was observed to adsorb on coffee grounds exoentropically based on thermodynamic estimations. As pH rose, the adsorption of nickel ion was diminished presumably due to the formation of cuboidal complex with hydroxide ion and the coexistence of cadmium ion was found to decrease the amount of nickel ion adsorption, which was proportional to the concentration of cadmium ion.

  • The geometry structures of hexa-coordinated [NiLX]X complexes ($X=Cl^-,\;Br^-,\;I^-$) {L = 8,9,18,19-tetrahydro-7H,17H-dibenzo[f,o] [1,5,9,13]dioxadiaza cyclohexadecine-8,18-diol} are optimized by density functional theory (DFT) using B3LYP/LANL2DZ. The calculated geometric parameters are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. Calculation results about these complexes show that dipole moment decreases, and the energy levels of HOMOs descend from iodo-complex to chloro-complex. The energy levels of HOMOs descend gently from iodo-complex to chloro-complex, while the energy levels of LUMOs in the present complexes are almost similar; therefore the energy gapes between HOMOs and LUMOs increased from iodo-complex to chloro-complex.

  • The synthesis and properties of 2,13-bis(3'-pyridylmethyl) $(L^3)$, 2,13-bis(4'-pyridylmethyl) $(L^4)$, and 2,13-bis(phenylmethyl) $(L^5)$ derivatives of 5,16-dimethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatrcyclo$[16.4.0.^{1.18}0^{7.12}]$docosane are reported. The 3- or 4-pyridylmethyl groups of $[ML^3](ClO_4)_2\;or\;[ML^4](ClO_4)_2$ (M = Ni(Ⅱ) or Cu(Ⅱ)) are not involved in coordination, and the coordination geometry (square-planar) and ligand field strength of the complexes are quite similar to those of $[ML^5](ClO_4)_2$, bearing two phenylmethyl pendant arms. However, the complex formation reactions of $L^3\;and\;L^4$ are strongly influenced by the pyridyl groups, which can interact with a proton or metal ion outside the macrocyclic ring. The macrocycle $L^5$ exhibits a high copper(Ⅱ) ion selectivity against nickel(Ⅱ) ion; the ligand readily reacts with copper(Ⅱ) ion to form $[CuL^5]^{2+}$ but does not react with hydrated nickel(Ⅱ) ion in methanol solutions. On the other hand, $L^3\;and\;L^4$ form their copper(Ⅱ) and nickel(Ⅱ) complexes under a similar condition, without showing any considerable metal ion selectivity. The ligands $L^3\;and\;L^4$ react with copper(Ⅱ) ion more rapidly than does $L^5$ at pH 6.4. At pH 5.0, however, the reaction rate of the former macrocycles is slower than that of the latter. The effects of the 3- or 4-pyridylmethyl pendant arms on the complex formation reaction of $L^3\;and\;L^4$ are discussed.

  • Exposure to soluble nickel compound produces toxic effects on immune system, but the mechanism of action remains to be elucidated. Differential gene expression was studied to understand the potential molecular mechanism responsible for acute toxicity induced by nickel acetate in spleen cells. We exposed mouse spleen cells to nickel acetate with a nontoxic dose ($40{\mu}M$) and then extracted total RNA at 6 h and 12 h after exposure. The RNA was hybridized onto 10K mouse oligonucleotide microarrays, and data were analyzed using GeneSpring 7.1. Nickel had a modest effects on expression of many genes, in the range of 1.3-3 fold. The expression profile showed time-dependent changes in expression levels of differentially expressed genes, including some important genes related to cell cycle, apoptosis and DNA repair. In hierarchical cluster analysis of duplicate experiments, 111 genes were screened out. Out of these, 44 genes showing time- dependent up-regulation (>1.5 fold) and 38 genes showing down-regulation (>1.5 fold) at all time points were chosen for further analysis. The change in the expression of three genes (GPX1, GADD45B and FAIM) after nickel treatment was validated using RT-PCR. As a rule, a number of genes appear to be coordinately regulated between cell survival and cell death from nickel toxicity. In conclusion, changes in the gene profile in the spleen after nickel treatment are complex and genes with diverse functions are modulated. These findings will be contributed to the understanding of the complicated biological effects of nickel.

  • For the fabrication of the circuits, contact or terminal areas are usually coated with nickel and gold. Usually, diluted palladium solution is applied to initiate electroless nickel plating on the copper circuits. However, the trace amounts of palladium remains on the resin and it causes the extraneous deposition. We confirmed that selectivity was greatly improved by the treatment with the strong reducing agents such as SBH or DMAB. Bondability was greatly influenced by the contents of phosphorus in the deposited nickel. Stabilizers in the electroless gold plating were also influenced the bonding strength. The baths containing cupferron or potassium nickel cyanide as a stabilizer showed superior bondability. The gold deposits having strong orientation with Au(220) and Au(311) showed good bond ability.

  • New unsymmetrical ($\alpha$-Diimine)nickel(II) catalysts having different pendent groups at the ortho positions on aromatic rings were synthesized and subjected to propylene polymerizations with MAO (methylaluminoxane). Structural analyses of the resulting polypropylenes by $^1H\;and\;^{13}C\;NMR$ showed that the ortho substituents on aromatic rings of ($\alpha$-diimine)nickel(II) catalyst affected significantly the polypropylene microstructure. While $C_s$ symmetric catalyst afforded a syndiotactic polypropylene (rr triad content=66%) due to the syndiospecific chain end control, $C_1$ symmetric catalysts produced much less stereoregular polypropylenes (rr triads content <50%), presumably because of collision of the isospecific site control with the syndiospecific chain end control.

  • The protonation constants of the 14-membered tetraaza macrocycles A(3,14-dimethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatricyclo$[l6.4.0^{1,18}.0^{7,12}]$docosane) and B(2,3,6,13,14,17-hexamethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatric yclo-[l6.4.$0^{1,18}.0^{7,12}$]docosane) were measured by potentiometry. The formation constants of each of these ligands with copper(II) and nickel(II) were determined by an out-of-cell spectrophotometric method. The results indicate that the per-N-methylated macrocycle B exhibits much higher selectivity for complex formation with copper(II) over nickel(II) ion than A and other related 14-membered tetraaza macrocycles. The effects of the N-and C-substituents on the basicity and the metal ion selectivity of the ligands are discussed. The synthesis and properties of copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes of B are also described.
