  • The chemisorption effect of CO on the Ni/Cu(001) surface was investigated using LEED(Low Energy Electron Diffraction) and EELS(Electron Energy Loss Spectrscopy0 under the UHV conditions. after mounting the Cu(001) single crystal in the UHV chamber (base pressure 1$\times$10-10Torr), a clean surface was obtained after a few cycles of repeated Ar+ ion sputtering and annealing at about 40$0^{\circ}C$. The epitaxial thin Ni films were formed on the Cu(001) by evaporation from 99.999% Ni block. The pseudomorphic growth and the orderness of the thin Ni films were monitored by c(2$^{\circ}C$2) LEED pattern. CO adlayers on Ni epitaxial thin films were prepared by dosing pure CO has through a leak valve. After CO adsorpton at room temperature, two pairs of peaks were observed by EELS, whose relative intensities are changed as the film thickness is varied and time is elapsed. These two pair of peaks are likely related to different bonding sites (-top and bridge sites) of C-Ni as well as C-O vibration. Experimental results and qualitative interpretation of the spectra wille be discussed. The possibility of using EELS in combination with probe species (CO) to investigate the nature of thin film growth is mentioned. We will report the experimental result of O2 dosage on Ni film and interaction of CO and O2.

  • To improve the efficiency of water splitting systems for hydrogen production, the high overvoltages of electrochemical reactions caused by catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER, Oxygen Evolution Reaction) must be reduced. Among them, LDH (Layered Double Hydroxide) compounds containing transition metal such as Ni, are attracting attention as catalyst materials that can replace precious metals such as platinum that are currently used. In this study, nickel foam, an inexpensive metallic porous material, was used as a support, and NiCo LDH (Layered Double Hydroxide) nanocrystals were synthesized through a hydrothermal synthesis process. In addition, changes in the shape, crystal structure, and water decomposition characteristics of the Mo-doped NiCo LDH nanocrystal samples synthesized by doping Mo to improve OER properties were observed.

  • In order to fabricate magnetoresistive sensor, Fe-Ni and Co-Ni alleys were evaporated on the slide glass and the silicon wafers. Saturation magnetic induction($B_{s}$), coercive field strength($H_{c}$) and magnetoresistance were measured for fabricated samples. The evaporated Fe-Ni thin films show that the saturation magnetic induction was 0.65 T, and coercive field strength was 0.379 A/cm, and this value was changed to 0.370 A/cm(//), 0.390 A/cm(${\bot}$), respectively after magnetic annealing. For the measurement of coercive field strength, magnetizing frequency of 1 kHz was used. For the fabricated sensor element, the change of magnetoresistance (${\Delta}R/R$) was excessively unstable due to oxidation in the process of fabrication. The evaporated Co-Ni alloy thin films show that saturation magnetic induction was 0.66 T, and coercive field strengthes were 5.895 A/cm(//), 5.898 A/cm(${\bot}$), respectively, after magnetic annelaing. The change of magnetoresistance(${\Delta}R/R$) was $3.6{\sim}3.7%$ of which value was excessively stable to room temperature. Fe-Ni thin film could have many problems due to large affinity in the process of fabrication of magnetoresistance sensor, but Co-Ni thin film could be a suitable material for fabrication of magnetoresistance sensor, because of its small affinity and definite magnetoresistance effects.

  • Using $Na_2CO_3$ and $MeSO_4$ (Me = Ni, Co and Mn) as starting materials, the precursor of $[Ni_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}]CO_3$ has been synthesized by carbonate co-precipitation. The precursor was mixed with $Li_2CO_3$, and calcined at 750, 850, and$950^{\circ}C$ in air. Effect of calcinations temperature on characteristics of $Li[Ni_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}]O_2$ cathode materials was investigated. The structure and characteristics of $Li[Ni_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}]O_2$ were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical measurements. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that the intensity ratio of $I_{(003)}/I_{(104)}$ increased and the R-factor ratio decreased with the increase of calcinations temperature. And Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) result show that the primary particle size increased. Especially, the $Li[Ni_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}]O_2$ calcined at $950^{\circ}C$ for 24 H shows excellent electrochemical performances with reversible specific capacity of $165.3mAhg^{-1}$ [cut-off voltage 2.5~4.3 V, 0.1 C($17mAhg^{-1}$)] and good capacity retention of 95.4% after 50th charge/discharge cycles[cut-off voltage 2.5~4.3 V, 1 C($170mAhg^{-1}$)].

  • $NiFe/Co/Al_2O_3/Co/IrMn$ tunneling junctions were grown on (100)Si wafer and their spin-valve tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) was studied. The tunneling junctions were grown by using a 5-gun RF/DC magnetron sputter. $Al_2O_3$ barrier layer was formed by exposing Al layer to oxygen atmosphere at 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours. Strong exchange coupling interaction is observed between the ferromagnetic Co and the antiferromagnetic IrMn of Co/IrMn bilayer when IrMn is 100$\AA$ thick. $NiFe(183\;{\AA})/Co(17\;{\AA})/Al_2O_3(16\;{\AA})/Co(100\;{\AA})/IrMn(100\;{\AA})$ tunneling junction shows best TMR ratio of about 10% in the applied magnetic field range of $\pm$20 Oe. The TMR ratio is improved about 23% and electrical resistance is decreased about 34% when annealed at 200 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in magnetic field of 330 Oe, parallel to the bottom electrode. With increasing the active area of junction the TMR ratio increases while electrical resistance decreases.

  • CuNi alloy films are deposited by co-sputtering of dual targets (Cu and Ni, respectively). Effects of the co-sputtering conditions, such as powers applied to the targets, deposition pressures, and substrate temperatures, on the structural and electrical properties of deposited films are systematically investigated. The composition ratio of Ni/Cu is almost linearly decreased by increasing the DC power applied to the Cu target from 25.6 W to 69.7 W with the RF power applied to the Ni target unchanged(140 W). it is noted that the chamber pressure during deposition and the film thickness give rise to a change of the Ni/Cu ratio within the films deposited. The former may be due to a higher sputtering yield of Cu atom and the latter due to the re-sputtering phenomenon of Cu atoms on the surface of deposited film. The film deposited at higher pressures or at lower substrate temperatures have a smaller crystallite size, a higher electrical resistivity, and much more voids. This may be attributed to a lower surface mobility of sputtered atoms over the substrate.

  • It is necessary to develop soft magnetic layer with high saturation magnetization 4 $\pi{M}_s$ and in-plane magnetic anisotropy field Hk for soft magnetic underlayer of perpendicular magnetic recording media with high signal to noise ratio. Fe-Co-B layer with high 4 $\pi$Ms of about 23 kG deposited on Ni-Fe and Ni-Fe/Si seedlayer exhibited very high in-plane magnetic anisotropy filed Hk of about 280 and 380 Oe, respectively, In-plane XRD studies clarified that the lattice spacing of planes along the easy axis direction was longer than that along the hard axis direction in the Fe-Co-B layers with high Hk. These results indicate that high Hk of Fe-Co-B/Ni-Fe and Fe-Co-B/[Ni-Fe/si] layers were resulted from magnetoelastic anisotropy owing to a residual stress. Moreover, the high Hk in the Fe-Co-B/Ni-Fe layer was maintained until 30$0^{\circ}C$ annealing temperature.

  • This study investigated the magnetic properties and frequency dispersion of complex permeability of Ni-Zn-Co ferrites used for magnetic shielding in near field communication (NFC) system. The sintered specimens of $(Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3})_{1-x}Co_xFe_2O_4$ composition were prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The coercive force and saturation magnetization were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer. The complex permeability was measured by RF impedance analyzer in the range of 1 MHz~1.8 GHz. The coercive force increased and saturation magnetization decreased with increasing the Co substitution. The real and imaginary parts of complex permeability decreased and the resonance frequency increased with Co substitution, which was attributed to the increase in crystal anisotropy field and reduction in saturation magnetization. The effect of Co substitution could be found in reducing the magnetic loss to nearly zero at the operating frequency of NFC (13.56 MHz).

  • Diamond films which have high hardness and thermal conductivity can be used to improve the performance of WC-Co as a cutting tool material. However, it is difficult to get such coatings of good uniformity and adhesiveness due to the surface characteristics of WC-Co. To get better coatings, some techniques, such as the surface treatment of substrate or the formation of interlayer between substrate and diamond film, have been tried. In the present work, the nickel interlayer is formed onto WC-Co by electroless Ni-P plating, which is introduced as a new method, and then diamond film is deposited on the interlayer. Formation and uniformity of three layers, i.e., substrate, electroless plate, and diamond film, and the adhesiveness of interlayers were studied. To investigate the effects of pretreatment on electroless plating, two different methods such as acid treatment and diamond powder treatment were used. The effects of heat treatment of the electroless plated surface on adhesiveness between the substrate and the interlayer were examined. It was found that as the temperature increases, the Ni crystals grow and then result in improved adhesiveness. Diamond film coatings of pure diamond phase were obtained at $800^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that the heat treated electroless Ni-P plating can be effectively used as a interlayer between WC-Co substrate and diamond film.

  • The codeposition behavior of WC particles from an additive-free nickel sulfate and sulfamate solution has been investigated. Electroplating of Ni/WC composites was carried out at different current density with variation of WC particle size. The Guglielmi adsorption mechanism is applied to the electroplating of the fine WC in Ni matrix. The contents of WC in Ni composite coating were increased both by increasing current density and WC concentration in the bath. The hardness of Ni/WC composite coating at low current density is higher than that at high current density since finer WC particles dispersed through the coating. The codeposition behaviors of Co coated WC particles were also investigated. Conducting layer of particles promoted the codeposition behavior of Ni/WC-Co composite coatings.
