We fabricated Ni and Ni-W alloys for use as a substrate in YBCO coated conductor applications and evaluated the effect of W in Ni on texture, microstructure and surface morphology, and hardness of substrate. Pure Ni, Ni-2 at.%W, and Ni-5at.%W alloy substrates were prepared by plasma arc melting, cold rolling, and the recrystallization heat treatment at various temperature (700- 130$0^{\circ}C$). It was observed that Ni-W alloy substrates had stronger cube texture and maintained it at higher annealing temperature, compared to pure Ni substrate : The full-width at half- maximums of in-plane texture was 13.40$^{\circ}$ for Ni substrate and 4.42$^{\circ}$-5.57$^{\circ}$ for Ni-W substrate annealed at 100$0^{\circ}C$. In addition, it was observed that the Ni-W substrate had smaller grain size, shallower boundary depth, and higher hardness, compared to those of pure Ni substrate.
Thermal sprayed Ni-Cr alloy coating on the carbon steel was carried out erosion-corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion test in the marine environment. The erosion-corrosion behavior and electrochemical corrosion characteristics of substrate(SS400) and thermal sprayed Ni-Cr coating was investigated. The erosion-corrosion control efficiency of Ni-Cr coating to substrate was also estimated quantitatively. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The weight loss rate of Ni-Cr coating layer by the erosion-corrosion compared with substrate was smaller. With the lapse of time, the weight loss rate of substrate was linearly increased in $25{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ solution, but that of Ni-Cr coating became stable. 2) The corrosion potential of substrate became less noble than that of Ni-Cr coating layer, and the corrosion current density of Ni-Cr coating became lower than that of substrate. 3) The control efficiency of erosion-corrosion of Ni-Cr coating compared to substrate became more dull than that of corrosion in $25{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and $5000{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ solution.
In order to investigate the possibility of Ni-Al based intermetallics coating onto aluminum substrate, the coating process for induction heating has been evaluated by microscopically analyzing the intermetallic layers coated at temperatures lower than the melting temperature of aluminum. The coating layers were divided into two parts with different microstructure along the depth. Hard $NiAl_3$ layer was found at lower parts of the coatings near the interface with aluminum substrate. This layer was formed by the diffusion of aluminum atoms from the substrate into the coating layer across the interface during the induction heating. Meanwhile, at the upper parts of the coating near the surface, a large amount of un-reacted Ni was still remained and surrounded by several Ni-Al based intermetallic compounds, such as $Ni_3Al$, NiAl and $Ni_2Al_3$ formed by the lattice diffusion.

The oxidation resistance of the diffusion aluminide bond coat (BC) is compromised largely by interdiffusion (ID) effects on coated turbine blades of aeroengines. The present study is designed to understand the influence of ID on βNiAl coatings or BC. In this regard, nickel substrate and CMSX-4 superalloy are deposited. In total, four sets of BCs are developed, i.e. pure βNiAl (on Ni substrate), simple βNiAl (on CMSX-4 substrate), Zr-βNiAl (on CMSX-4 substrate) and Pt-βNiAl (on CMSX-4 substrate). The main aim of this study is to understand the interdiffusion of Al, Zr and Pt during preparation and oxidation. In addition, the beneficial effects of both Zr and platinum are assessed. Pure βNiAl and simple βNiAl show Ni-out-diffusion, whereas for platinum inward diffusion to the substrate is noticed under vacuum treatment. Interestingly, Zr-βNiAl shows the least ID in all BCs and exhibit stability under both vacuum and oxidation treatments. However, its spallation resistance is slightly lower than that of Pt-βNiAl BC. All BCs show similar oxide growth trends, except for Zr-βNiAl, which exhibits two-stage oxidations, i.e. transient and steady-state. Moreover, it is suggested that the localized spallation in all BCs is caused by βNiAl - γ'-Ni3Al transformation.
Ni-base self-fluxing alloy powder particles were flame sprayed onto the SS400 mild steel substrate surface. The effects of both substrate temperature and spraying distance on the splat behavior of sprayed particles were examined. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) In the splat behavior of Ni-base self-fulxing alloy particles sprayed onto the SS400 mild steel substrate, splashing was observed under the room temperature condition. On the contrary, it showed circular plate pattern in the substrate temperature range over 373K. 2) It was cleared that there was close relationship between mechanical properties of coating layer and splat behavior of sprayed particles. 3) From the experimental results, optimum spraying conditions showed excellent mechanical properties in the case of Ni-base self fluxing alloy sprayed onto the SS400 mild substrate were 473K of substrate temperature and 250mm of spraying distance.
We fabricated Ni-substrate for YBCO coated conductors and evaluated the effects of pressing and annealing temperature and time on texture. Ni substrate was fabricated by powder metallurgy technique and compacts were prepared by applying uniaxial or isostatic pressure. The texture of substrate made by applying cold isostatic pressure (CIP) was stronger than that by uniaxial pressure which we attribute to the fact that the CIP method provided higher density and more uniform density distribution. It was observed that the substrate annealed at 400 C showed both retained texture and recrystallized texture. On the other hand, the texture of substrate significantly improved at annealing temperature above 500 C, forming strong 4-fold symmetry, [111] II ND texture, and FWHM of 9∼10 . It is to be noted that the degree of texture was almost independent of annealing temperature (500∼1000 C) and annealing time(1∼54 min, at 1000 C). EBSD and AFM analysis indicated that 99% of grain boundaries was low angle grain boundary and RMS was approximately 3 nm, respectively. Development of strong cube texture and high fraction of low angle grain boundary of Ni-substrate made by powder metallurgy technique in our study is considered to be suitable for the application of YBCO coated conductors.
Adhesion strength of electroless-plated Ni, Ni-P and Cu deposites on alumina substrate has been studied. Grain boundary spaces produced on the substrate surface by etching treatment provided anchoring sites for enhancing the adhesion strength. Adhesion strengths of Ni-P and Ni deposit were higher than that of Cu deposit, because of higher initial nucleation rates than the latter. The electroless-plated Ni-P and Ni underlayer improved the adhesion strength of the Cu deposit. In could be attributed to the enhanced adhesion between the substrate and those underlayers as well as the satisfactory adhesion between Cu deposits and those underlayers. Heat treatment was also conducted in order to enhance the adhesion strength of Cu layer. The strength was enhanced by about 19% when the treatment was conducted at $150^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The enhancement was attributed to relief of internal stress and release of hydrogen.
Thermal sprayed Cu-Ni alloy coating on the carbon steel was carried out impingement erosion-corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion test in the marine environment. The impingement erosion-corrosion behavior and electrochemical corrosion characteristics of substrate(SS400) and thermal sprayed Cu-Ni coating was investigated, and the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating to substrate was estimated quantitatively. Main results obtained are as follows : 1) The weight loss rate of Cu-Ni coating layer by the impingement erosion-corrosion compared with substrate was smaller in high specific resistance solution than in low specific resistance solution. 2) The corrosion potential of Cu-Ni coating layer spray coating in the marine environment became more noble than that of substrate. 3) With the lapse of time, corrosion current density of Cu-Ni coating layer became stable, but that of substrate was increased. 4) As the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating layer in the marine environment was over 90%, its anti-corrosion characteristics was excellent.
Three different kinds of substrate used in this study : bare Cu substrate, Ni-P/Cu substrate with a Ni-P layer thickness of $5\mu\textrm{m},$ and Au/Ni-P/Cu substrate with the Ni-P and Au layers of $0.15\mu\textrm{m}$ and $5\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness respectively. The wettability of various Sn-base solders was affected by the substrate metal finish used, i.e., nickel, gold and copper. On the Au/Ni-F/Cu substrate, Sn-base solders wet better than any of the other substrate metal finishes tested. The interfacial reaction between various substrate and Sn-base solder was investigated at $70^{\circ}C,$$100^{\circ}C,$$120^{\circ}C,$$150^{\circ}C,$$170^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ for reaction times ranging from 0 day to 60 day. Intermetallic phases was formed along a Sn-base solder/ various substrate interface during solid-state aging. The apparent activation energy for growth of Sn-Ag/Cu, Sn-Ag-Bi/Cu, and Sn-Bi/Cu couples were 65.4, 88.6, and 127.9 Kj/mol, respectively. After isothermal aging, the fracture surface shoved various characteristics depending on aging temperature and time, and the types of BGA pad.
