An Improvement of the Characteristics of Pasted Cadmium Electrodes by Electrolytes in Ni/Cd Battery (Ni/Cd 전지에서 전해액에 의한 페이스트식 카드뮴 전극 특성 향상)

  • The morphology changes of cadmium hydroxide into ${\gamma}$ phase by eletrolytes were carried out to improve the high rate charge and discharge efficiency of pasted cadmium electrodes. KOH solutions with different concentrations of NaOH were used as eletrolytes. It was found that the utilization of active material of cadmium electrode was the best in an electrolyte with 1.82 M NaOH. The amount of ${\gamma}-Cd(OH)_2$ increased in proportion to the concentration of NaOH. The surface area measurement showed that an active material which contained mainly ${\gamma}-Cd(OH)_2$ had a higher specific surface area than an active material of ${\beta}-Cd(OH)_2$. In a sealed cell, the discharge capacity was improved at high rate charge and discharge (1.0 C, 2.0 C) by using an electrolyte with NaOH. Furthermore, these improved performances were maintained up to 500 cycles at 1.0 C rate charge and discharge cycles.

Dispersion of Toxic Elements in the Area Covered with Uranium-Bearing Black Shales in Korea (함(含)우라늄 흑색(黑色)세일 분포지역(分布地域)에서의 유독성원소(有毒性元素)들의 분산(分散)에 관한 지구화학적(地球化學的) 연구(硏究))

  • Surficial dispersion patterns of heavy metals and toxic elements (U, Mo, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Co, Cr, V, Ni, Pb, and Cd) were investigated in the Dukpyungri, Goesan area covered with low grade uranium-bearing black shales. Maximum abundance of U in the black shale was 455ppm. Radioactivity was counted at a maximum of 7cps in black shales, and was less than 0.5cps in shales, slates, and oil shales of the control areas. Enrichment of Mo, V, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in black shales is particularly characteristic compared with shales, slates, and oil shales of the control areas, whereas contents of Mn, Cr, Co, and Th in all rock samples tend to be almost similar. Residual top soils (0~15cm depth) over black shales show high contents of Mo, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, and V in comparison with the control areas. Contents of trace elements in subsoils (15~30cm depth) were higher about one and half times than those in topsoils. Average contents of Mo, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and V in garden soil and playground soil of an elementary school in Dukpyungri, Goesan area, were high about two to fifteen times compared with the control areas. Contents of trace elements in stream sediments were higher from two to eight times than those in residual soils. Sodium, AI, K, V, Cr, and Fe were more enriched in the roots of pine than in the twigs of pine. Contents of Li, AI, V, Ni, Cd, Fe, and Co were higher in the roots of azalea than in the twigs of azalea. Enrichment of P, Ca, and Mg was remarkable in the twigs of both pine and azalea. Biological absorption coefficients for essential elements (Zn, P, Mn, Ca and K)tend to be high, whereas those for the non-essential elements.(Ba, Ti, V, and Mo) and toxic elements(Cr, Co, Pb and Ni) be low. Less mobile elements (Pd, Cd, and Co) tend to show anomalies with higher contrast than more mobile elements(Mo, V, Zn, Cu and Ni) in the area covered with black shales.

  • We investigated the distribution of organic matter and trace metals in surface sediment from Tonyeong coast. To determine the status of trace metal pollution, we also conducted an ecological risk assessment. Relatively high concentration of TN (total nitrogen), TOC (total organic carbon), and AVS (acid volatile sulfide) was found in surface sediment located in the narrow channel (site 35-38). Spatial distribution of Cd, Cr, Ni, Co, Hg, and Zn in surface sediment was similar and high Cu concentrations were found in narrow channel. The assessment of heavy metal pollution was derived using the Enrichment factors (EF).   • In order to investigate the characteristics of dustfall at eight sites in Pusan, the dustfal1 samples were collected with dust jar method from May to September 1995, and Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were analyzed, The main results of this study are summarized as follows; 1) The total mean value of dustfall was 11.30 ton/$^{\circ}C$/month. 2) The maximum and minimum values of dustfall were industrial and resident area respectively, 3) The dustfall showed the general trend in order as May>Jun>September>July. 4) The general trend of the heavymetals in dustfall was in order as Fe>Cu>Zn>Pb>Ni>Cd>Cr>Mn any the concentrations of heavymetals had different tendencies according to sources of Pollutant meterials. 5) The Concentrations of Fe, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd and Cr in industrial area and Mn, Pb and Zn in traffic area were high. The concentrations of heavymetals in residence area and unpolluted area were generally low. 6) Cr, Cu and Cd were influenced by the steel industry and the metal products plant and Zn was influenced by the automobiles. Mn, Fe and Ni were influenced by the soil as wet as artificial outlet. 7) The correlation between the total amount of dustfall and the concentrations of the heavymetals by month was high and the correlation between the heavymetals of the same origin was high.

  • The adsorption and separation behaviors of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions using a poly-dibenzo-18-crown-6 were investigated in aqueous solution. The adsorption degree(E) and distribution ratio(D) of alkali, alkaline earth metal ions were Li(I)$t_R$) of metal ions were affected by the adsorption degree(E) and distribution ratio(D). This results showed good separation efficiency of K(I), Sr(II), Ag(I) and Pb(II) from the mixed metal solution.

Concentration of Heavy Metals in Seawater, Fish, and Shellfish at Lake Shihwa (시화호 내 수질 및 어패류의 중금속 분포 연구)

  • This study aims to determine the pollution levels of nine kinds of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in Lake Shihwa, which is susceptible to the inflow of pollutants, and the levels of heavy metal exposure in its fish and shellfish. Shihwa Lake's water quality did not exceed the short-term standard for protection of marine ecosystems, but concentrations of As, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Zn exceeded the long-term standard for protection of a marine ecosystem. In comparison to findings in prior research, performed in 2010, levels of Cr, Ni, As, and Zn are now 4.1 times lower. However, when compared to Saemangeum Lake, the environment is similar to that of Lake Shihwa, Cu, Ni, Hg, Mn, and Zn were 244.4 times higher. The levels of Pb, Cd, and Hg in fish's muscles did not exceed the average values set by the marine safety standard. However, when compared to the fish from the Korean coast, the levels of heavy metals were 9.7 times higher, on average. The levels of heavy metals in fish's livers were on average 26.8 times higher than in the muscles. In the case of shellfish, the levels of Pb, Cd, and Hg did not exceed the standard values, but in comparison to the shellfish from the south coast, the levels of heavy metals were 6.2 times higher on average. In particular, Mn (153.5 times higher) from fish and Cd (14.7 times higher) from shellfish were found in high amounts, indicating a concerning level of these specific heavy metals.

  • In this study, the adsorption efficiency of mixed heavy metals from an aqueous solution was examined using bentonite. The physical and chemical properties of bentonite was analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Further, heavy metal adsorption was characterized using Freundlich and Langmuir equations. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to the Langmuir model for bentonite. The adsorption uptake of heavy metals was high and followed the order $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $$Zn^{2+}{\sim_=}Ni^{2+}$$. The results also showed that adsorption uptake slightly increased as increasing pH from 6 to 10. The bentonite surface was observed viay SEM and FT-IR; Si-O and Si-O-Al were found to be the main functional groups by FT-IR analysis. From these results, the adsorption mechanisms of heavy metal were not only surface adsorption and ion exchange, but also surface precipitation. Thus, bentonite could be a useful adsorbent for treating heavy metal in aqueous solution.

  • The effects of Cu and Sb on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Sn-Sb-Cu-Ni-Cd whitemetal were investigated. Any compound phase was not observed in the whitemetal with 0.05 wt% Cu, while as the Cu content was increased, star- or needle-like $Cu_6Sn_5$ phases were found. The tensile strength gradually increased with Cu up to 5 % and then remained almost constant with Cu content above 5 %, while the hardness continuously increased with Cu content because of the increased hard $Cu_6Sn_5$ phases. As the Sb content increased, SbSn cuboids were present as well as $Cu_6Sn_5$. The tensile steength and hardness continuously increased and the elongation decreased with Sb content.

  • The three-dimensional metal complex inclusion compound $Cd(pn)Ni(CN)_4{\cdot}0.5NO_2C_6H_5$(pn: 1,2-diaminopropane=propylenediamine) crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group, $Pn2_1$a, (a=13.868(5), b=26.591(4), c=7.840(1)${\AA}$, V=2891(1)${\AA}^3$, Z=4), R=0.054 for 2800 independent reflections. The host structure of the inclusion compound appears the same one(T-type) of inclusion compound with branched aliphatic-guest molecule. The nitrobenzeneguest molecule attains the stable position in the nodal channel of T-type by placing the polar nitro group between the pn-amino groups at the node and the bulky aromatic ring in the antinodal zone of the channel. The substituted aromatic guest molecule is accommodated in the host structure of metal complex $Cd(pn)Ni(CN)_4$ with channel cavity.

  • Waste can be utilized as secondary or alternative fuel. Solid recovered fuel (SRF) and dried sewage sludge were combusted to investigate heavy metal emissions from their combusiton in this study. Content of copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) of coal, SRF and dried sewage sludge were determined, respectively. Concentrations of these heavy metals in the combustion flue gas were also determined. As a result, emissions of gas-phase Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Zn, Pb and As compounds were found to be little. However, a significant amount of gas-phase Hg was emitted from combustion of coal, SRF and dried sewage sludge. While SRF showed a high mercury oxidation percentage in its combustion flue gas, dried sewage sludge showed a high level of gaseous mercury emission.
