  • In the study, Ni2+ (nickel) removal from synthetically prepared wastewater by electrocoagulation method, which is one of the electrochemical treatment processes, was investigated and parameters such as current density, pH, mixing speed, initial Ni2+ concentration, supporting electrolyte type and concentration were determined to determine Ni2+ removal efficiencies effects were studied. Experiment conditions during 30 minutes of electrolysis; the current density was determined as 0.95 mA/cm2, the initial pH of the wastewater was 6, the mixing speed was 150 rpm, and the initial nickel concentration was 250 mg/L. The Ni2+ removal efficiency was obtained as 75.99% under the determined experimental conditions, while the energy consumption was calculated as 3.15 kW-h/m3. In the experiments, it was observed that the type and concentration of the supporting electrolyte did not have a significant effect on the Ni2+ removal efficiency. In the trials where the effect of the support electrolyte concentration was examined, the Ni2+ removal efficiency was 75.99% in the wastewater environment without the supporting electrolyte, while the Ni2+ removal efficiency was 81.55% when 7.5 mmol/L NaCl was used after the 30-minute reaction, and the energy consumption was 2.15 kW-h/m3 obtained as. As a result of the studies, it was concluded that the electrocoagulation process can be applied in the treatment of wastewater containing Ni2+.

  • The heavy metal such as Nikel (Ni) in industrial wastewater is one of the major reasons of decreasing nitrification efficiency in municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs). In this study, laboratory scale reactors were operated in order to analyse of nitrification efficiency and improvement measures. As a result, nitrification efficiency during high Ni concentration (0.295 mg/L) was about 20%. However nitrification efficiency during low Ni concentration (0.114 mg/L) was over 70%. The changes of the micro-organism activity according to Ni concentration was investigated as being the major reason behind the gap of nitrification efficiency through analysing AUR and SNR. Increasing the HRT in high Ni concentration also increased the nitrification efficiency. Thus, maintenance of microorganisms and increasing the HRT in nitrification reactors suggests that measures taken to treat wastewater is positively correlated with high concentration of heavy metal.

  • A basic study on the recovery of heavy metals such as Zn, Ni, Cu and Fe ions from wastewater was carried out with the spent iron oxide catalyst, which was used in the Styrene Monomer(SM) production company. The heavy metals could be recovered more than 98% with the spent iron oxide catalyst. The alkaline components of the spent catalyst could be precipitated the metal ions of the wastewater as metal hydroxides at the higher pH 10.6 in Ni, pH 8.0 in Cu, pH 6.5 in Fe, pH 8.5 in Zn. But the metal ions are adsorbed physically on the surface of the spent catalyst in the range of the pH of the metal hydroxides and pH 3.0, which is the isoelectric point of the iron oxide catalyst.

  • Plating wastewater containing various heavy metals can be produced by several industries. Specifically, we focused on the removal of copper (Cu2+) and nickel (Ni+) ions from the plating wastewater because all these ions are strictly regulated when discharged into watershed in Korea. The application of both nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing copper and nickel ions to reduce fresh water consumption and environmental degradation was investigated. In this work, the removal of copper (Cu2+) and nickel (Ni+) ions from synthetic water was studied on pilot scale remove by before using two commercial nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis(RO) spiral-wound membrane modules (NE2521-90 and RE2521-FEN by Toray Chemical). The influence of main operating parameters such as feed concentration on the heavy metals rejection and permeate flux of both membranes, was investigated. Synthetic plating wastewater samples containing copper ($Cu^{2+}$) and nickel ($Ni^{2+}$) ions at various concentrations(1, 20, 100, 400 mg/L) were prepared and subjected to treatment by NF and RO in the pilot plant. The results showed that NF, RO process, with 98% and 99% removal for copper and nickel, respectively, could achieve high removal efficiency of the heavy metals.

  • Electrochemical ion exchange method is expected to be one of the most acceptable techniques for the separation of radioactive cations from nuclear wastewater. In this study a thin film of hexacyanoferrate on nickel surface was derivatized chemically in an aqueous potassium-ferricyanide solution. Electrochemical redox behavior of the nickel hexacyanoferrate(NiHCNFe) film electrode was investigated with the use of cyclic voltammetry potentiostated from -100 to 800 mV versus SCE. The electro-reduction characteristics of the NiHCNFe film were examined in the cobalt solutions. The NiHCNFe ion exchanger was more useful at lower concentration, lower temperature, and pH7 of the cobalt solution. The capacity loss of NiHCNFe was 0.018%/cycle that was less than the average loss of 2~3%/cycle of the convective organic exchanger. The 45~55% of the initial cobalt ions was electro-deposited on the NiHCNFe by using continuous recirculating reactor system. As a result, it was found that the electroactive NiHCNFe films showed better performance than the organic resins for the separation of cobalt ion from the aqueous solutions.

  • Continuous column adsorption experiments have been conducted fur artificial and actual wastewater which containing $Ni^{2+}$ by using manganese nodule as an adsorbent for the purpose of wastewater treatment along with an increased $Ni^{2+}$ recovery in the refining of manganese nodule. The adsorption features of $Ni^{2+}$ artificial wastewater were examined by taking the height of fixed bed, influent flow rate, and the initial concentration of adsorbate as the influential parameters. The adsorption capacity of manganese nodule and the rate constant for $Ni^{2+}$ adsorption were estimated employing Bohart-Adams equation. In addition, the variation of the adsorbed amount of adsorbate for each column according to the influent flow rate and the initial concentration of adsorbate was investigated based on the breakthrough curves fur each column. For serially connected columns, the adsorbed amount of $Ni^{2+}$ for each column was observed to increase gradually as the adsorption proceeded from the initial column to the final column. The variation of the breakthrough curve for actual wastewater with the height of fixed bed was not so significant as that for artificial wastewater, which was considered to be due to the high concentration of $Ni^{2+}$ in actual wastewater. Regarding the effect of the particle size of manganese nodule on adsorption, the adsorbed amount of adsorbate was found to somewhat increase as the particle size became smaller.

  • The purposes of this study were to evaluate the removal characteristics of COD, Ni, and P and to derive appropriate operating conditions for the plating wastewater according to NaOCl reaction time and pH operating conditions in the BPC unit process during the plating wastewater treatment process. As a results of evaluating the removal characteristics for raw wastewater by each BPC unit process, the removal efficiencies of COD, Ni and P in BPC 1-1 unit process were 72.8%, 99.1%, and 100.0%. Therefore, the proper reaction time of NaOCl was derived as 21.1 minutes. In order to maintain the +800 mV ORP and the reaction time of 20 minutes, the temporary injection and continuous injection of NaOCl in the BPC unit process were 13.7 mL and 18.7 mL, respectively. It was found that the temporary injection method of NaOCl reduced the chemical cost by 36.5% compared to the continuous injection method. Also, Ni showed the highest removal efficiency of 97.8% at pH 10.5. On the other hand, P showed a removal efficiency of 57.4% at pH 10.0.

  • The removal rate of heavy metals from the wastewater, the accumulation and translocation of heavy metals in plants after transplanting, and the responses of water celery growth with different wastewater treatments were investigated to determine the potential ability of green-remediation with hydroponic culture of water celery. The removal rate and translocation of Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb from different wastewater to plants were compared with cultivation periods after transplanting. The removal rate of heavy metals from wastewater was different with each treatment but increased with growing periods of water celery plants. The removal rate of Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb in Artificial solution, Artificial solution+EDTA, Munmark industrical wastewater, Jungsun minewater is ranged from 22 to 73%, from 28 to 100%, from 13 to 92% and from 41 to 100% at 6 days after transplanting, respectively. The translocations of Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb from roots to shoots in Artificial solution, Artificial solution+EDTA, Munmark industrical wastewater, Jungsun minewater are ranged from 14 to 28%. 8 to 30%. from 28 to 45% and from 2 to 15% at 12 days after transplanting, respectively. In plant growth responses, it appears to be inhibited the plant growth over all treatments excepts for Munmark industrial wastewater in these glowing periods. Therefore the water celery might play a useful role in phytoremediation to clean up wastewater contaminated with Cd, Cu, Ni or Pb.

  • This study evaluated the fertilizing value of struvite deposit recovered from swine wastewater in cultivating lettuce. Struvite deposit was compared to complex fertilizer, organic fertilizer and compost to evaluate the fertilizing effect of struvite deposit. Laboratory pot test showed that the struvite deposit better enhanced lettuce growth in comparison to commercial fertilizers. It was revealed that the growth rate of lettuce was simultaneously controlled by phosphorus (P) and magnesium (Mg). Moreover, nutrients such as nitrogen (N), P, K, calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were abundantly observed in the vegetable tissue of struvite pot. Meanwhile, struvite application led to the lower accumulation of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), chromium ($Cr^{6+}$) and nickel (Ni). In addition, no detection of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As) and nickel (Ni) in the lettuce tissue was observed in struvite application pots. The experimental results proved that the optimum struvite dosage for lettuce cultivation was 0.5 g struvite/kg soil. The column experiments clearly showed that ammonia nitrogen was more slowly released from struvite deposit than from complex fertilizer. Consequently, it was concluded that the struvite deposits recovered from swine wastewater were effective as a multi-nutrient fertilizer for lettuce cultivation.
