  • A batch experiment was conducted to evaluate the removal capacity of welsh onion(Allium fistulosum L.), shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.) roots as an adsorbent for Ni and Pb in aqueous solution. One gram of the dried Allium root powder was reacted in 100ml of solution containing 10mg of each heavy metal and effects of metal concentration, pH, temperature, and size of adsorbent on the removal efficiency were evaluated. The results were as follows ; The amount of adsorption of heavy metal ions were higher with the smaller particles size of adsorbent. Garlic root was high adsorption capacity of Pb, especially. The higher concentration of heavy metal solution was, the more amount of adsorption of heavy metals was. The adsorption ratio was differed from a kind of heavy metal. As the temperature increased, the amount of adsorption of Ni and Pb by shallot and welsh onion were decreased. The amount of adsorption of Ni was high under alkali conditions but the amount of adsorption of Pb was high under neutral and acidity condition.

  • In order to examine the inhibition effect of other heavy metal ions on the removal of heavy metal ions by crab shell in aqueous solution, 10 heavy metal ions $(Cr^{3+},\;Cd^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Hg^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Mn^{2+],\;Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Pb^{2+})$ were used as single heavy metal ions and mixed heavy metal ions, respectively. In single heavy metal ions, $Pb^{2+},\;Cr^{3+},\;Cu^{2+}$ were well removed by crab shell, however, $Cd^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Mn^{2+}$ were not. The heavy metal removal increased as the increase of covalent index (Xm$^2$r), and the relationship classified heavy metal ions as 2 heavy metal groups $(Fe^{3+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\; Cr^{3+},\;Mn^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}\;group\;and\;Pb^{2+},\;Hg^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}\;group)$. In mixed heavy metal ions, the removals of $Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Pb^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}$ as 0.49 m㏖/g, regardless of the existence of other heavy metal ions, were similar to the result of single heavy metal ions experiment. The removals of $Mn^{2+},\;Cd^{2+},\;Ni^{2+}$ decreased as the existence of other heavy metal ions, however, the removal of $Zn^{2+},\;Cr^{3+},\;Hg^{2+}$ increased.

  • In this research, I carried out the adsorption and removal test of Pb, Ni, Co and Cu ions using organic substances spread out any where in the nature which can be obtained easily from our neighbor-such as Paulownia coreana, Pinus densiflora, Juniperus chinesis, Quercus dentata, Magnolia kobus, Platanus occidentalis, Gingko biloba, Diospyros kaki leaves. As the result of the research to find the best optional condition for the adsorption and removal, shows that the adsorption and removal ratio of Pb ion by a Paulownia coreana raw leaves is 99% at $70^{\circ}C$, those of Ni ion and Co ion by Magnolia kobus formalin treatment leaves are 79% at $70^{\circ}C$, 97% at $40^{\circ}C$ respectively. And that of Cu ion by Platanus occidentalis treatment leaves is 97% at $50^{\circ}C$ in mixed solution. As the result of comparing the removal ratio by raw leaves and formalin treatment leaves, the removal ratio of treatment is 30~90% more effective than raw leaves in most cases. And I concluded Pb > Cu > Co > Ni ion in multiple solution and Co > Ni > Cu >Pb ion in single solution after testing adsorption and removal ratio of mixed solution separately as time goes by. In general, the reactions were completed within first 5 minutes. The test result of measuring the hydrolysable tannin content of each leaf shows that an overcup Quercus dentata is 11.36%, a Diospyros kaki is 10.81% and the rest of them are 2.49~4.12% in raw leaves cases. In treatment leaves cases, an overcup Quercus dentata is 3.23% and the others are less than 1%.

  • We investigated the individual biosorption removal of lead, copper, and nickel ions from aqueous solutions using Chara sp. algae powder in a batch mode. The impact of several parameters, such as initial concentration of the metal ions, contacting time, sorbent dose, and pH on the removal efficiency, was investigated. The maximum removal efficiency at optimum conditions was found to be 98% for Pb(II) at pH = 4, 90% for Cu(II) at pH = 5, and 80% for Ni(II) at pH = 5. The isotherm study was done under the optimum conditions for each metal by applying the experimental results onto the well-known Freundlich and Langmuir models. The results show that the Langmuir is better in describing the isotherm adsorption of Pb(II) and Ni(II), while the Freundlich is a better fit in the case of Cu(II). Similarly, a kinetic study was performed by using the pseudo-first and second-order equations. Our results show that the pseudo-second-order is better in representing the kinetic adsorption of the three metal ions.

  • This study was initiated to quantitatively evaluate the effects of five heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni) on growth and P removal efficiencies of Pseudomonastaeanensis, known as the phosphorus accumulating microorganism. The heavy metals were added individually and with the binary mixture to the batch culturing system of Pseudomonastaeanensis. $IC_{50}$ and $EC_{50}$ were used to quantitatively evaluate their effects on the growth and phosphorus removal efficiency of Pseudomonas taeanensis in those treatments. Additionally, additive index value method was used to evaluate the interactive effects of heavy metals for Pseudomonas taeanensis in this study. As those heavy metals were singly added to Pseudomonastaeanensis, the greatest inhibitory effect on its growth and P removal efficiency was observed in Cd, whereas, the smallest effect was found in Ni. As the concentrations of all heavy metals added were gradually increased, its growth and P removal efficiency was correspondingly decreased. Specifically, $IC_{50}$ of Pseudomonas taeanensis for Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni were $0.44mg\;L^{-1}$, $5.12mg\;L^{-1}$, $7.46mg\;L^{-1}$, $8.37mg\;L^{-1}$ and $14.56mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The P removal efficiency of Pseudomonas taeanensis was 81.1%. $EC_{50}$ values of Pseudomonas taeanensis for Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni were $0.44mg\;L^{-1}$, $4.08mg\;L^{-1}$, $7.17mg\;L^{-1}$, $8.90mg\;L^{-1}$ and $11.26mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. In the binary treatments of heavy metals, the lowest $IC_{50}$ and $EC_{50}$ were found in the Cd + Cu treatment, whereas, the highest $IC_{50}$ and $EC_{50}$ were found in the Zn + Pb and Pb + Ni treatments, respectively. Most of the interactive effects for the binary mixture treatments of heavy metals were antagonistic. Based on the results obtained from this study, it appears that they could provide the basic information about the toxic effects of the respective individual and binary treatments of heavy metals on the growth and P removal efficiency of other phosphorus accumulating organisms.

  • Experimental investigation on the adsorption of heavy metal confounds as $Fe^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Cr^{6+}$ using chitosan was carried out. The adsorption of each component of heavy metal compounds was measured by Atomic Absorption apparatus. The range of optimum pH for the removal rates of heavy metal compounds was found pH 7.0~9.0. The maximum time for the removal rate of $Fe^{2+}$ was observed about 15 min. The maximum time for the removal raters of $Cu^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, and $Cr^{6+}$ was observed about 25 min. The adsorption rates of heavy metal compounds by chitosan have been found in the order of $Fe^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Mn^{2+}>Zn^{2+}>Ni^{2+}>Pb^{2+}>Cd^{2+}>Cr^{6+}$.

  • In this study, the effects of single and binary heavy metals toxicity on the growth and phosphorus removal ability of Bacillus sp.. known as be a phosphorus-removing microorganism, were quantitatively evaluated. Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni were used as heavy metals. As a result of analysis of variance of the half of inhibition concentration and half of effective concentration for each single heavy metal treatment group, the inhibitory effect on the growth of Bacillus sp. was Ni < Pb < Zn < Cu < Cd. And the inhibitory effect on phosphorus removal by Bacillus sp. was Ni < Pb < Zn < Cu < Cd. When analyzing the correlation between growth inhibition and phosphorus removal efficiency of a single heavy metal treatment group, a negative correlation was found (R2 = 0.815), and a positive correlation was found when the correlation between IC50 and EC50 was analyzed (R2 = 0.959). In all binary heavy metal treatment groups, the interaction was an antagonistic effect when evaluated using the additive toxicity index method. This paper is considered to be basic data on the toxic effects of heavy metals when phosphorus is removed using phosphorus removal microorganisms in wastewater.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was initiated to quantitatively evaluate the effects of five heavy metals on the growth and P removal efficiencies of Alcaligenes sp., known as the Phosphorus Accumulating Organisms (PAOs). It was cultivated in the batch system with five heavy metals, such as Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb and Ni, added in single and binary mixtures, respectively.METHODS AND RESULTS: IC50 (half of inhibition concentration of bacterial growth) and EC50 (half of effective concentration of phosphorus removal Efficiencies) were used to quantitatively evaluate the effects of heavy metals on the growth and phosphorus removal Efficiencies of Alcaligenes sp. In addition, Additive Index Value (A.I.V.) method was used to evaluate the interactive effects between Alcaligenes sp. and heavy metals. As a result, as the five heavy metals were singly added to Alcaligenes sp., the greatest inhibitory effects on the growth and P removal efficiencies of each bacteria was observed in the cadmium (Cd). In the binary mixture treatments of heavy metals, the treatments of lowest IC50 and EC50 were the Cd + Cu treatment. Based on the IC50 and EC50 of the binary mixtures of heavy metals treatments, most interactive effects between the heavy metals were found to be antagonistic.CONCLUSION: Based on the results obtained from this study, it appears that they could provide the basic information about the toxic effects of the respective treatments of single and binary mixtures of heavy metals on the growth and P removal efficiencies of Alcaligenes sp. through further study about the characterization of functional proteins involved in toxic effects of heavy metals.

  • This study was aimed at determining the changes in heavy metal removal efficiency at different acid concentrations in a micro-nanobubble soil washing system and pickling process that is used to dispose of heavy metals. For this purpose, the initial and final heavy metal concentrations were measured to calculate the heavy metal removal efficiency 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, and 120 min into the experiment. Soil contaminated by heavy metals and extracted from 0~15 cm below the surface of a vehicle junkyard in the city of U was used in the experiment. The extracted soil was air-dried for 24 h, after which a No. 10 (2 mm) was used as a filter to remove large particles and other substances from the soil as well as to even out the samples. As for the operating conditions, the air inflow rate in the micro-nano bubble soil washing system was fixed at 2 L/min,; with the concentration of hydrogen peroxide being adjusted to 5%, 10%, or 15%. The treatment lasted 120 min. The results showed that when the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was 5%, the efficiency of Zn removal was 27.4%, whereas those of Ni and Pb were 28.7% and 22.8%, respectively. When the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was 10%, the efficiency of Zn removal was 38.7%, whereas those of Ni and Pb were 42.6% and 28.6%, respectively. When the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was 15%, the efficiency of Zn removal was 49.7%, whereas those of Ni and Pb were 57.1% and 42.6%, respectively. Therefore, the efficiency of removal of all three heavy metals was the highest when the hydrogen peroxide concentration was 15%.
