Present study aimed to investigate the radioprotective effects of propolis feeding on rat tissues damaged by X-ray irradiation. It was shown that the number of white blood cell in X-ray irradiated group supplemented with propolis increased as much to those of the control group and also the GOT activities among the blood components were decreased after propolis feeding. The mineral contents such as Mg, Fe, Ca, Mn, Cu, Mo, Ni, As in liver were increased as compared with those of the control group but maintained lower level than those of only irradiated groups, implying that the propolis feeding elevated the recovery capability of white blood cell effectively and propolis have a potential resistance to cell damage by X-ray. According to histological observations of the testis, intestine and liver tissues which are irradiated after feeding propolis, the numbers of damaged undifferentiated cells were decreased in testis and the shape of the goblet cells and inner and outer muscular layers in intestine were restored to the original state and the hepatocytes and interlobular veins were shown intact in liver, suggesting that propolis has a potential capacity to restore cell shapes or resist deformation of cell.

No matter how small amount of heavy metals it may be cause skin allergies through percutaneous adsorption when existing in cosmetic products as impurities. In order to develop a highly sensitive method for simultaneous determination of $Pb^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Cd^{2+},\;and\;Mn^{2+}$ in coloring agents and cosmetic products with rapidity and accuracy, we carried out the determination on ion chromatography. All of these metals are well separated through a bifunctional ion-exchange column(IonPac CS5A) and detected by post-column reaction and spectrophotometric detection. The calibration graphs are linear($r^2>0.999$) in the range $0.1{\sim}1000{\mu}g/mL$. Detection limits for 200 ${\mu}L$ of sample solution are at the level of ${\mu}g/L$, which is sufficient for judging whether the product is safe or not. The relative standard deviations(RSDs) of the retention time and the peak area are less than 0.21 and 1.24%, respectively. The recovery rates are $97{\sim}104%$. The new method was applied to analyze the amount of heavy metals which were contained in 22 cosmetic products and 11 coloring agents.
Mineralogical characteristics of Cu-Co ores from the Central African Copperbelt in the Democratic Repblic of Congo are studied using powder X-ray diffractometer, general area detector X-ray diffractometer, and electron proble microanalyzer. Black ores are mainly composed of heterogenite (cobalt oxide/hydroxide mineral) and malachite (copper carbonate mineral), whereas green ores are only composed of malachite. Heterogenite shows very bright white color under the reflected microscope, and belongs to 3R polytype, because it has d-spacings at $4.39{\AA}$ and $2.316{\AA}$. Since NiO and $Fe_20_3$ content of heterogenite are lower than those of 3R polytype from other localities, it cannot completely exclude the presence of 2H polytype in heterogenite from this study. Malachite is light grey color under the reflected microscope with approximate chemical formula of $Cu_{1.97}Co_{0.02}Fe^{2+}{_{0.01}}CO_3(OH)_2$. Heterogenite and malachite were probably formed at the supergene emichment stage, the last mineralization stage in the Central African Copperbelt. Cobalt seems to be much more emiched in the black supergene (oxy)hydroxide ore than those in the primary sulfide ore.

Burning rate of the matrix propellant($r_{sb}$) and burning rate along the metal wire($r_w$) were measured and analyzed for the HTPB/AP/Al propellant embedded with Ag wire($\phi$0.15mm) according to weight % of RDX(0~20%). Variation of burning rate increment ratio($r_w$/$r_{sb}$) and pressure exponent(n) was studied for the nitramine propellant having 10% RDX embedded with three kinds of metal(Ag, Cu, and Ni-Cr) of which diameter range is between 0.1~0.6mm. Maximum burning rate increment ratio of the nitramine propellant embedded with Ag wire($\phi$0.1mm) was 5.94 at $20^{\cire}C$, 1000 psia, 16.4% faster than that of HTPB/AP propellant, it is because that autoignition temperature of the nitramine propellant was higher than that of HTPB/AP propellant. Standard deviation of absolute ($r_{wc}$/$r_{we}$)/$r_{we}$ calculated by using new empiracal equation composed of four dimensionless groups, is 6.11% less than that calculated by using original empirical equation composed of three dimensionless group. The new empiracal equation is derived from Buckingham pi theorem using the parameters such as thermal diffusivity, melting temperature. wire diameter, propellant sample diameter, frame temperature, autoignition temperature and matrix burning rate which influence on $r_w$.

Many researchers have increased the loading level of electrodes to improve the energy density of secondary batteries. In this study, high-loading NCM523 (LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2) positive electrode is manufactured using a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder, not the conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) binder, which has been commonly used in lithium-ion batteries. Through the kneading process using PTFE suspension, not the conventional slurry process using PVdF solution in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), thick electrodes with high loading are easily manufactured. When the PTFE and PVdF-based electrodes are prepared at a loading level of 5.0 mAh/cm2, respectively, the PTFE-based electrode shows better cycle performance and rate capability than those of PVdF-based electrodes. The electrode manufactured by the kneading process using a PTFE binder has high electrode porosity due to insufficient roll-press, but the porosity can be lowered by high temperature roll-press over 120℃. However, there is no significant difference in cycle performance according to the roll press temperature. In addition, the cycle performance of the high loading electrode is slightly improved by increasing the content of the conductive material. Overall, the PTFE binder can improve the performance of the high loading electrode, but additional solutions will be needed.
Acid mine drainage(AMD) treatment is classified as both passive and active treatment. During the treatment, about 5,000 tons of neutralization sludge is generated as a by-product per year in Korea. This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of sludge generated from physico·chemical treatment processes as an active treatment from 5 different sources (D, H, S, T, Y) and the possibility of the sludges being recycled. The sludges have a pH range of 5.86 ~ pH 7.89, and a water content range of 51% ~ 82%. Most of particle sizes were less than 25 ㎛. In analysis of inorganic elements, the concentration of Al, Fe, and Mn were between 1,189 mg/kg ~ 129,344 mg/kg, 106,132 mg/kg ~ 338,011 mg/kg, and 3,472 mg/kg ~ 11,743 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of As and Zn in sludge-T, Cd in sludge-D, Ni in sludge-H, Zn in sludge-S, and Cd in sludge-Y exceeded the soil contamination standards of Korea. The results from 2 separate kinds of leaching test, the Korea Standard Leaching Test(KSLT) and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP), showed that all the sludges met the Korea groundwater standards. From the XRD and SEM-EDS analysis, the peaks of calcite and quartz were found in the sludges. The sludge also had a high proportion of Fe and O, and the majority of the composition was amorphous iron hydroxide.

The composite electroplating is accomplished by adding inert materials during the electroplating. Permalloy is the term for Ni-Fe alloy and it is used for industrial applications due to its high magnetic permeability, surface wear resistance, corrosion protection. Microhardness for microdevices is enhanced after composite coating and it increases the life cycle. However, the hydroxyl group on the silica makes their surface susceptible to moisture and it causes the silica nanoparticles to be agglomerated in the aqueous solution. The agglomeration problem causes poor dispersion which eventually interrupts uniform deposition of silica nanoparticles. In this study, the dispersion of silica nanoparticles in the permalloy electroplated layer is reported with variation of additives and current densities. The optimum current density was 20 $mA/cm^2$ and the silica content was 9 at% at $50^{\circ}C$. The amount of silica nanopowder codeposition and surface morphologies were influenced with variation of additives. In the bath, smooth surface morphology and relatively high contents of silica nanopowder codeposition were obtained with addition of sodium lauryl sulfate.
This study analyzed precipitation environment, heavy metal concentration, mineral composition, and spectral characteristics associated with heavy metal concentration and mineral composition for the reddish brown precipitates occurred in the drainage of Dogye mining station. The pH of the reddish brown precipitates ranges from 7.59 to 7.94 resulting neutral. XRF analysis reveals that the precipitates has high Fe concentration, and contaminated with Ni, Cu, and Zn. Dolomite, calcite, goethite, magnetite, kaolinite, pyrophyllite, quartz and aluminum isopropoxide were identified based on XRD analysis. As a result of spectral analysis associated with heavy metal contamination, visible reflectance increases and infrared reflectance decreases with a increase in heavy metal concentration. The spectral characteristics of the reddish brown precipitates is turned out to be manifested by goethite, magnetite, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and aluminum isopropoxide.
A bacterial strain capable of synthesizing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) with an unusual pattern of monomer units was isolated from activated sludge using the enrichment culture technique. The organism, identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa P-5, produced polyesters consisting of 3-hydroxyvalerate and medium-chain-length (MCL) 3-hydroxyalkanoate monomer units when $C_{-odd}$ alkanoic acids such as nonanoic acid and heptanoic acid were fed as the sole carbon source. Solvent fractionation experiments using chloroform and hexane revealed that the 3-hydroxyalkanoate monomer units in these polyesters were copolymerized. The molar concentration of 3-hydroxyvalerate in the polyesters produced were significantly elevated up to 26 mol% by adding 1.0 g/L valeric acid as the cosubstrate. These copolyesters were sticky with low degrees of crystallinity. The PHA synthase genes were cloned, and the deduced amino acid sequences were determined. P. aeruginosa P-5 possessed genes encoding MCL-PHA synthases (PhaC1 and PhaC2) but lacked the short-chain-length PHA synthase gene, suggesting that the MCL-PHA synthases from P. aeruginosa P-5 are uniquely active for polymerizing (R)-3-hydroxyvaleryl-CoA as well as MCL (R)-3-hydroxyacyl-CoAs.
The contamination of a suite of heavy metals were evaluated in water and sediments of urban stream, Tancheon down the stream. Tancheon is a urban stream which goes all the way across the urban area where various pollution sources are present. The sixteen study sites from seven different areas were designated down the stream. The heavy metal levels of the streams were detected in the order of Zn>Cu>Ni>Pb>Cd>Cr>Sb. There was a difference in the relative order of the concentration ranking in lake sediments. There is a trend that the heavy metal levels are higher at the sites where the construction causes inflow of soil particles to stream. Toxicity tests using pore-water in sediments were conducted for samples collected in some study sites, and pore-water in one site was proven to be toxic to Japanes medaka (Oryzias latipes). The reason may be the fecal pollution rather than heavy metal effect. Strong odor was detected in the sediment whose pore-water samples showed ecotoxicity. We did not observed the increasing concentration of heavy metals down to stream since the soil texture varied in the stream area of our study. Further study is needed to find quantitative relations between the level of contamination and its eco-effect.
