Steady and physiological flows of a Newtonian fluid and blood in the abdominal gorta/iliac artery bifurcation are numerically simulated to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Distributions of velocity, pressure, and wall shear stress in the bifurcated arterial vessel model are calculated to investigate the differences of flow characteristics between steady and physiological flows and to compare flow characteristics of blood with that of a Newtonian fluid For the given Reynolds number the flow characteristics of physiological flows for a Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated arterial vessel are quite different from thcse of steady flows. No flow separation or flow reversal in the bifurcated region appears downstream of a stenosis during the acceleration phase. However, during the deceleration phase the flow exhibits flow separation in the outer walls of daugtlter branches, which extends to the entire wall region.

Considerable interest has evolved in the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in channels of noncircular cross section in compact heat exchanges. Analytical solution was developed for prediction of the flow rate and maximum velocity in steady laminar flow of any incompressible, time-independent non-Newtonian fluids in straight closed and open channels of arbitrary, but axially unchanging cross section. The geometric parameters and function of shear describing the behavior of the fluid model were evaluated for fluid flow among a bundle of rods arranged in triangular and square array. Numerical values of dimensionless maximum velocities, mean velocities, pressure-drop-flow parameters and friction factors were evaluated as a function of porosity and pitch-to-radius ratio.
Considering the role of viscosity in the hemorheology, the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid are important in the pulsatile blood flows. Stenosis, with an abnormal narrowing of the vessel, contributes to block blood flows to downstream tissue and lead to plaque rupture. Therefore, systematic analysis of blood flow around stenosed vessels is crucial. In this study, non-Newtonian behaviors of blood analog fluids around the micro-stenosis with 60 % severity in diameter of $500{\mu}m$ was examined by using CFX under the pulsatile flow conditions with the period of 10 s. Viscosity information of two non-Newtonian fluids were obtained by fitting the value of normal blood and highly viscous blood. As the Newtonian fluid, the water at room temperature was used. During the pulsatile phase, wall shear stress (WSS) is highly oscillated. In addition, high viscous solution gives rise to increases the variation in the WSS around the micro-stenosis. Highly oscillating WSS enhance increasing tendency of plaque instability or rupture and damage of the tissue layer. These results, related to the influence on the damage to the endothelium or stenotic lesion, may help clinicians understand relevant mechanisms.

This study concerns the characteristics of helical flow in a concentric and eccentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52 and 0.9, whose outer cylinders are stationary and inner ones are rotating. Pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for fully developed flows of water and 0.2% aqueous of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), respectively, when the inner cylinder rotates at the speed of 0-500 rpm. The effect of rotation on the skin friction is significantly dependent on the flow regime. In all flow regimes, the skin friction coefficient is increased by the inner cylinder rotation. The change of skin friction coefficient corresponding to the variation of rotating speed is large for the laminar flow regime, whereas it becomes smaller as Re increases for the transitional flow regime and, then, it gradually approach to zero for the turbulent flow regime.
Interaction of blood flow and leaflet behavior in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve was investigated using computational analysis. Blood flows of a Newtonian fluid and a non-Newtonian fluid with Carreau model were modeled as pulsatile, laminar, and incompressible. A finite volume computational fluid dynamics code and a finite element structure dynamics code were used concurrently to solve the flow and structure equations, respectively, where the two equations were strongly coupled. Physiologic ventricular and aortic pressure waveforms were used as flow boundary conditions. Flow fields, leaflet behaviors, and shear stresses with time were obtained for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid cases. At the fully opened phase three jets through the leaflets were found and large vortices were present in the sinus area. At the very final stage of the closing phase, the angular velocity of the leaflet was enormously large. Large shear stress was found on leaflet tips and in the orifice region between two leaflets at the final stage of closing phase. This method using fluid-structure interaction turned out to be a useful tool to analyze the different designs of existing and future bileaflet valves.
The drop formation dynamics of a shear thinning, elastic, yield stress ($\tau_o$) fluid (Carbopol 980 (poly(acrylic acid)) dispersions) in silicone oil has been investigated in a flow-focusing microfluidic channel. The rheological character of each solution investigated varied from Netwonian-like through to highly non-Newtonian and was varied by changing the degree of neutralization along the poly (acrylic acid) backbone. We have observed that the drop size of these non-Newtonian fluids (regardless of the degree of neutralisation) showed bimodal behaviour. At first we observed increases in drop size with increasing viscosity ratio (viscosity ratio=viscosity of dispersed phase (DP)/viscosity of continuous phase (CP)) at low flowrates of the continuous phases, and thereafter, decreasing drop sizes as the flow rate of the CP increases past a critical value. Only at the onset of pinching and during the high extensional deformation during pinch-off of a drop are any differences in the non-Newtonian characteristics of these fluids, that is extents of shear thinning, elasticity and yield stress ($\tau_o$), apparent. Changes in these break-off dynamics resulted in the observed differences in the number and size distribution of secondary drops during pinch-off for both fluid classes, Newtonian-like and non-Newtonian fluids. In the case of the Newtonian-like drops, a secondary drop was generated by the onset of necking and breakup at both ends of the filament, akin to end-pinching behavior. This pinch-off behavior was observed to be unaffected by changes in viscosity ratio, over the range explored. Meanwhile, in the case of the non-Newtonian solutions, discrete differences in behaviour were observed, believed to be attributable to each of the non-Newtonian properties of shear thinning, elasticity and yield stress. The presence of a yield stress ($\tau_o$), when coupled with slow flow rates or low viscosities of the CP, reduced the drop size compared to the Newtonian-like Carbopol dispersions of much lower viscosity. The presence of shear thinning resulted in a rapid necking event post onset, a decrease in primary droplet size and, in some cases, an increase in the rate of drop production. The presence of elasticity during the extensional flow imposed by the necking event allowed for the extended maintenance of the filament, as observed previously for dilute solutions of linear polymers during drop break-up.
Characteristics of the pulsatile flow in a 3-dimensional elastic blood vessel are investigated to understand the blood flow phenomena in the human body arteries. In this study, a model for the elastic blood vessel is proposed. The finite volume prediction is used to analyse the pulsatile flow in the elastic blood vessel. Variations of the pressure, velocity and wall shear stress of the pulsatile flow in the elastic blood vessel are obtained. The magnitudes of the velocity waveforms in the elastic blood vessel model are larger than those in the rigid blood vessel model. The wall shear stresses on the elastic vessel vary with the blood vessel motions. Amplitude indices of the wall shear stress for blood in the elastic blood vessel are $4\sim5$ times larger than those of the Newtonian fluid. As the phase angle increased, point of the phase angle is are moved forward and the wall shear stresses are increased for blood and the Newtonian fluid.
Numerical Calculations for dimensionless pressure drop (friction factor times Reynolds number) have been obtained for fully developed laminar flow of MPL(Modified Power Law) fluid in isosceles triangle pipes. The solutions are valid for Pseudoplastic fluids over a wide range from Newtonian behavior at low shear rates through transition region to power law behavior at higher shear rates. The analysis identified a dimensionless shear rate parameter which for a given set of operating conditions specifies where in the shear rate range a particular system is operating, i.e., Newtonian, transition or power law region. The numerical calculation data of the dimensionless pressure drop for the Newtonian and power law regions are compared with previously published asymptotic results presenting within 0.16 % in Newtonian region and 2.98 % in power law region.
