  • A new mathematical model to predict the beam pointing instability of a nonconservative two-body satellite system in spinning injection mode has been developed by using Newton-Euler and projection methods. Since the on-axis and null axis of the omni antenna with toroidal pattern beam form a right angle, wobbling of the antenna on-axis is measured by determining the Euler angles which represent the orientation of the satellite's spin axis. Because of the complexity of the system which is a time varying, nonstationary, nonlinear dynamical system, a numerical method is used for the analysis. Computer simulation results present the effects of the mass distribution and internal mass motion on the antenna beam pointing.

  • Thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena of piezolaminated plates are numerically investigated by applying a cylindrical arc-length scheme to Newton-Raphson method. Based on the layerwise displacement theory and von-Karman strain-displacement relationships, nonlinear finite element formulations are derived for thermopiezoelastic composite plates. From the static and dynamic viewpoint, nonlinear thermopiezoelastic behavior and vibration characteristics are studied for symmetric and eccentric structural models with various piezoelectric actuation modes. Present results show the possibility to enhance the performance of thermal structures using piezoelectric actuators and report new phenomena, namely thermopiezoelastic snapping, induced by the excessive piezoelectric actuation in the active suppression of thermally buckled large deflection of piezolaminated plates.

  • The present paper examines the thermal and flow characteristics of a parallel flow heat exchanger and investigates the effects of the parameters on thermal performance by defining the flow nonuniformity. Thermal performance of a parallel flow heat exchanger is maximized by the optimization using Newton's searching method. The flow nonuniformity is chosen as an object function. The parameters such as the locations of separator, inlet, and outlet are expected to have a large influence on thermal performance of a parallel flow heat exchanger. The effect of these parameters are quantified by flow nonuniformity. The results show that the optimal locations of inlet and outlet are 19.73 mm and 10.9 mm, respectively. It is also shown that the heat transfer increases by 7.6% and the pressure drop decreases by 4.7%, compared to the reference model.

  • The effect of flow distribution on thermal and flow performance of a parallel flow heat exchanger has been numerically investigated. The flow distribution has been altered by varying the geometrica l parameters that included the locations of the separators, and the inlet/outlet of the heat exchanger. Flow nonuniformities along paths of the heat exchanger, which were believed to be dominantly influential to the thermal performance, have been observed to eventually optimize the design of the heat exchanger. The optimization has been accomplished by minimizing the flow nonuniformity that served as an object function when the Newton's searching method was applied. It was found that the heat transfer of the optimized model increased approximately 7.6%, and the pressure drop decreased 4.7%, compared to those of the base model of the heat exchanger.

  • Nonlinear equations of structures are generally solved numerically by the iterative solution of linear equations. However, this iterative procedure diverges when the tangent stiffness is ill-conditioned which occurs near limit points. In other words, a major challenge with simple iterative methods is failure caused by a singular or near singular Jacobian matrix. In this paper, using the Newton-Raphson algorithm based on Davidenko's equations, the iterations can traverse the limit point without difficulty. It is argued that the propose algorithm may be both more computationally efficient and more robust compared to the other algorithm when tracing path through severe nonlinearities such as those associated with structural collapse. Two frames are analyzed using the proposed algorithm and the results are compared with the previous methods. The ability of the proposed method, particularly for tracing the limit points, is demonstrated by those numerical examples.

  • This paper analyze the steady state performance of a self-acting air lubricated slider bearing in hard disk/head system. Modified Reynolds' equation is derived from the steady state compressible Navier-Stokes equation, under slip-flow conditions. Finite difference technique and numerical procedure are described by using Newton-Raphson iteration method to slove the non-linear equations. These techniques are applied to conventional slider bearings and the effects of molecular mean free path(MMFP) for a recording surface of hard disk are shown. The calculation procedure developed here, wide applicabilities in practical head design procedures, and converges rapidly.

  • An automatic mesh generation system with unstructured quadrilateral elements on trimmed NURBS surfaces has been developed.. In this paper, NURBS surface geometries in the IGES format have been used to represent model shape. NURBS surface is represented as parametric surface. So each surface could be mapped to a 2D parametric plane through the parametric domain. And then meshes with quadrilateral elements are constructed in this plane. Finally, the constructed meshes are mapped back to the original 3D surface through the parametric domain. In this paper, projection plane, quasi-expanded plane and parametric Plane are used as 2D mesh generation plane. For mapping 3D surface to parametric domain, Newton-Rhapson Method is employed. For unstructured mesh generation with quadrilateral elements on 2D plane, a domain decomposition algorithm using loop operators has been employed. Sample meshes are represented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper presents a graphical windows-based program for the education and training for novel network reduction. The object of developed simulator is to provide users with a simple and useable tool for gaining an intuitive feel for power system analysis. The developed simulator consists of the main module (MMI,GUI), the location marginal price module (LMP), the clustering module and network reduction module. Each module has a separate graphical and interactive interfacing window. The developed simulator needs with the PSS/E input data format, generator cost function, location information. Line admittances of reduced network was determined by using the power flow method(Newton-Raphson). So line flow of reduced network is almost same to original power system. Results of reduced network are compared on the window in the tabular format. Therefore, the developed simulator can be utilized as a useful tool for effective education and training for power system analysis.

  • This paper presents a numerical method to analyze the electromechanical-coupled field in the spindle motor of a computer hard drive and investigates dynamic response due to the electromechanical excitation, i.e. unbalanced magnetic force and centrifugal force for the rotational asymmetric motor. Magnetic field is calculated from Maxwells equation and voltage equation by introducing nonlinear time-dependent finite element analysis. Mechanical motion of rotor is calculated by solving Newton-Euler equation. Electromechanical excitation and dynamic response are characterized by analyzing the free response of a rotating rotor and Fourier analysis of the excitation force and resulting vibration of a rotor. It shows that centrifugal force produces the unbalanced magnetic force even in the rotational symmetric motor. It also shows that resonance produces quite considerable vibration even when the high excitation frequency with small amplitude matches with the natural frequency of the spindle motor.
