  • Recently, the interest is increased rapidly about the New Hanok as contemporary house. This research analyze the characteristics of New Hanok is built since 2000. The result are as followings. First, many contemporary architects used only the roofing tiles and traditional Hanok elevation design as the design vocabulary of New Hanok. In future, the design vocabulary of New Hanok must be developed variously. Secondly, the construction of New Hanok is possible from the land of minimum $100m^2$ in a city can be found. Thirdly, as a result of having analyzed at the form and the spatial side, it has been analyzed that New Hanok can be divided into 3 types in the form side, which is 'the transfiguration of format', 'the motive borrowing of traditional elements', 'the vertical extension and reconstruction'. In the spatial side, it has been analyzed that New Hanok can be divided into 3 types, which is 'the center of Madang', 'the integration of circulation', 'the transfiguration of design principle'. • The purpose of this study is to provide the method of saving the construction cost per unit area of the New Hanok using the inner space of a roof as a floor space with a structural modification of it's roof. The proportion of a roof of the Traditional Hanok accounts for about a half of it's elevation, so it is an essential element of it. But, compare to the whole construction cost of the Traditional Hanok, it costs over a half of expenses to build it. Recently, at the traditional building type, it is found that the inner space of a roof of it is used as a floor space with a structural modification of it's roof. It can be divided into two types, the storage type and the living type. The New Hanok at downtown can accommodate various new lifestyle, so the length of it's Yangtong is longer than that of the Traditional Hanok. When we adjust the proportion of the traditional Hanok to the New Hanok, the height of the column and the roof of the New Hanok becomes also higher than those of the traditional Hanok. So, using the upper part of the column and the roof of the New Hanok, we can make the inner space of a roof of the New Hanok as a floor space -like a bed room, tea room, personal work space and a storage- vertically connect with the 1st floor as the main living area. As a result, it is expected to save the unit construction cost of the New Hanok and has an extensity of space when we build the New Hanok at downtown.

  • Since the recent Hanok boom in Korea, Contemporary Hanok has been evolving in terms of structure, space, form, etc. To get a comprehensive understanding of the diversified Contemporary Hanok, this paper aims at its type classification by analyzing architects' designs since 2000. The criteria for the classification are two: (1) renovation [Re] or new construction [New]; and (2) degree of Contemporary Hanok's deviation from the traditional Hanok's standard - maintaining the traditional form [Main]; changing space within the traditional form [Space]; changing the traditional frame [Frame]; and juxtaposing the traditional and the modern [Combi]. From the two criteria, this paper deduced eight types of Contemporary Hanok, named respectively: Re-Main, New-Main, Re-Space, New-Space, Re-Frame, New-Frame, Re-Combi, and New-Combi, and studied their cases. It can be argued that various aspects of Contemporary Hanok and their critical meanings were well-investigated through this type classification and case-studies.

  • Developing the modern design of Hanok and providing support for the commercialization model development in recent years propelled by the New Hanok Support Strategies of the central government in conjunction with the New Hanok revitalization related projects reflecting local goverments. New Hanok revitalization, the rekindling and revaluing of human behaviors and interests in local goverments following the social and cultural changes of the past decades, has emeraged as an increasingly traditional area of concerning in New Hanok planning. In this paper we attempt to this discussion by describing recent projects in New Hanok revitalization in Jeollanam-do Province. Therefore, this study aims to examine the classification of compound knowledges based multidimensional relationship by using Self-Organizing Maps (SOM). SOM is an unsupervised learning neural network model for the analysis of high-dimensional input data. By using SOM, we were able to create a cluster map reflecting the characteristics of the New Hanok. In this case the pattern of the preference data was easily understood by visual analysis. Liking for compound knowledge deduced from this data was classified into 8 categories according to the compound knowledge properties of New Hanok. As a result, a systematic approach for analysis the characteristics of individual family and living environment of New Hanoks and 10 space usage patterns the changes in some aspects of New Hanok.
