A Waterborne Outbreak and Detection of Cryptosporidium Oocysts in Drinking Water of an Older High-Rise Apartment Complex in Seoul

  • From May to June 2012, a waterborne outbreak of 124 cases of cryptosporidiosis occurred in the plumbing system of an older high-rise apartment complex in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The residents of this apartment complex had symptoms of watery diarrhea and vomiting. Tap water samples in the apartment complex and its adjacent buildings were collected and tested for 57 parameters under the Korean Drinking Water Standards and for additional 11 microbiological parameters. The microbiological parameters included total colony counts, Clostridium perfringens, Enterococcus, fecal streptococcus, Salmonella, Shigella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Cryptosporidium oocysts, Giardia cysts, total culturable virus, and Norovirus. While the tap water samples of the adjacent buildings complied with the Korean Drinking Water Standards for all parameters, fecal bacteria and Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in the tap water samples of the outbreak apartment complex. It turned out that the agent of the disease was Cryptosporidium parvum. The drinking water was polluted with sewage from a septic tank in the apartment complex. To remove C. parvum oocysts, we conducted physical processes of cleaning the water storage tanks, flushing the indoor pipes, and replacing old pipes with new ones. Finally we restored the clean drinking water to the apartment complex after identification of no oocysts.

Comparing the actual heating energy with calculated energy by the amended standard building energy rating system for apartment buildings (건축물에너지효율등급 평가프로그램에 의한 공동주택 난방에너지 소요량과 실제 사용량 비교)

  • Purpose: Since September 1st, 2013, subjects of the evaluation have been expanded, and the evaluation standard has been detailed to enable Building energy rating system for all buildings. Accordingly, the new evaluation program (ECO2) has been developed, and therefore, apartment applied after September 1st, 2013 were evaluated with the new evaluation program. Therefore, this research suggests the improvement plan to figure out reasons for the evaluation result calculation and to calculate the evaluation results close to the actual energy usage by analyzing and comparing primary energy consumption as a result of the new evaluation program (ECO2) and actual heating energy usage on the same building. Method: When comparing evaluation results of the new evaluation program (ECO2) and actual heating energy usage, the tendency was similar but different. Also when comparing seasonally, the tendency was similar, but the different between actual heating energy usage and primary energy consumption during winter is greater than during spring or fall, and when comparing seasonal electric usage, heating alternatives were used through increased electrical usage during winter compared to during spring or fall. Result: Therefore, when evaluating apartment with the new program (ECO2) in the future, evaluation items relevant to the use of heating alternatives should be added, and the modification factor should be added according to the region. Based on the evaluation results of the research and actual energy usage, the Modification factors of the central part and the southern part were calculated respectively as 0.5 and 0.8.

  • Identification of damage of structures has recently received considerable attention in the light of maintenance and safety assessment under service loads. In buildings, the current techniques of safety assessment largely depend on partial experiments such as visual inspection, destructive and nondestructive tests which lead to overconsumption of time and cost as well as higher labor intensity. Therefore, a new trial for safety assessment is urgently needed today. In this respect, the vibration characteristics of buildings have been applied steadily to obtain a damage index of the whole building, but it cannot be established as a practical method until now. This study is aimed at investigating the application of damage identification methods using vibration characteristics of building. Numerical tests are performed on a apartment building. From the test results, it is observed that severity and location of damage can be estimated with a relatively small error by using natural frequency and mode shape data.

  • An infiltration was realized as an important part of ventilation to change fresh air with contaminated air in a house. In this study, it was measured the infiltration in new apartment buildings according to Seasons, height etc. We measured the infiltration by using tracer gas method and did for 24hours. To quantify the infiltration, Sulfur Hexafluoride($SF_6$) gas was used. The Constant Concentration was conducted during experimental process and the concentration of the gas was measured with a gas monitor. In the results of the measurement, the infiltration were appeared over 0.6 ACH in winter and about 0.2 ACH in summer and autumn. Also the infiltration were measured more highly at high and low stories than middle stories in winter.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide new design techniques for designers to design energy saving balcony in the apartment house using solar energy passively. These design techniques are examined with some samples of foreign buildings used solar energy passively. To classify these design techniques, this study sorts out the energy saving design elements from the preliminary studies. The results of this study show how to apply each design technique to the design of balcony in the apartment house and present a classification table of these techniques. Finally, this study suggests a design solution which can be applied in the design of balcony in existing apartment house.

  • This study was conducted in seven metropolitan cities in south korea containing Seoul and Busan etc and used DevC++ language program in the process to get datas of the distance ratio between apartment houses by the length of time accepting sunshine during the day time. Basically by inputting information such as a certain date, longitude, latitude etc, it was possible to get outputs of the length of shadow. This study obtained the data from the model experiment and computer programs which analysis of the sunshine environment. As mentioned above, by analysing relations between sunshine-ralated laws in each cities and those influential factors, it is possible to suggest the fundamental data of distance ratio between apartment houses when designing a new building with more optimized way.

  • The sale price of apartment buildings is a key factor in the success or failure of apartment projects, and the factors that affect the sale price of apartments vary widely, including location, environmental factors, and economic conditions. Existing methods of predicting the sale price do not reflect the nonlinear characteristics of apartment prices, which are determined by the complex impact factors of reality, because statistical analysis is conducted under the assumption of a linear model. To improve these problems, a new analysis technique is needed to predict apartment sales prices by complex nonlinear influencing factors. Using machine learning techniques that have recently attracted attention in the field of engineering, it is possible to predict the sale price reflecting the complexity of various factors. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a basic study for the development of a machine learning-based prediction model for apartment sale prices.

  • In general, post-installed dowel bars are used as a shear connector to ensure the composite actions between new slabs and existing slabs in an apartment remodelling constructions expecially for enlarging the interior space outward the existing buildings. But, it has not been checked that the connection performance between existing and new slab is satisfactory not only for the structural safety condition but also the for serviceability and dwelling requirements. In this research, an experimental works were presented to evaluate the load transfer capacity for the planar joints between existing and new slab. The existing slabs were obtained from the existing apartment housing which will be demolished, and were retrofitted with carbon fiber plate. Test results showed that the planar joints with post-installed dowel bars behaved in full composite modes until ultimate capacity of test specimens, so sufficient ultimate and serviceability performance are confirmed.

  • Bearing wall system was used extensively in most multi-residential apartment buildings in Korea. However, bearing wall apartments have the lack of architectural plan flexibility, remodelling-incompatible, causing serious economic losses in terms of construction waste. Recently, many researchers have studied the use of Rahmen structure as a potential alternative. The beam-column connection in the paper for long-life apartment housing forms connection of a Rahmen structure utilizing the advantages of steel and reinforced concrete. In addition, reduction of cast-in place concrete and construction schedule is expected by using precast concrete. Reduction effect of quantity decreased construction costs and $CO_2$ emission of key construction materials. However, verifying the feasibility of new construction method entails numerous challenges. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to analyze the construction feasibility of sleeve, coupler, and pressure welding connections for long-life apartment building structure. A 3D modeling software was used to perform the analysis, and a real scale model was created to verify the results of construction feasibility. By verifying the construction feasibility of beam-column connections, this study will contribute to the efficient application of these methods on construction sites.

  • The domestic construction industry in the last 30 to 40 years has accumulated a large stock of buildings that are quickly and there physical age is quickly becoming apparent. Contemporary changes in architecture are fueling changes driven by the increased demand for these new services and facilities. The cost of energy and raw materials are on the rise, and dealing with the waist generated from the creation of new buildings is an emerging problem in the industry today. Thus, building remodeling has emerged as an alternative do to its increased efficiency regarding material usage. The participation of users in the development stages of a remodeling project is essential to its effective implementation in projects. The BIM model used for the design process of building remodeling is the most effective way, due to the increased efficiency gained in many areas. This study will examine a pilot project where a BIM based process was used in the remodeling of an apartment.
