Determination of Microdosimetric Quantities of Several Neutron Calibration Fields at KAERI

  • The commercially available neutron survey meter, the REM500, which uses a tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) and the self-constructed TEPC were used to determine the microdosimetric quantities of several neutron calibration fields at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Microdosimetric spectra, absorbed dose, dose equivalent as well as quality factor were derived and compared with several neutron fields which were produced by using the shadow objects to make neutron scattered and being used as a kind of realistic neutron calibration fields at KAERI. The response of REM500 as a function of mean energy was evaluated with these neutron fields using the counts measured and the predetermined reference value. The response of the self-made TEPC and the REM500 was compared using one of the neutron calibration filelds of a $^{252}Cf$ source. The reference quantities of scattered neutron calibration fields were determined using a Bonner Sphere (BS). The value of frequency-mean lineal energy, dose-mean lineal energy and quality factor of two $^{252}Cf$ sources (unmoderated and $D_2O$ moderated) were determined to check the differences in the reference neutron fields between KAERI and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL, USA) and the results were in good agreement within 1%. It means that there is no big difference in dosimetric quantifies of neutron calibration fields of two laboratories.

  • The Pohang Neutron Facility based on an electron linac was constructed in order to construct the infrastructure for nuclear data production in Korea. It consists of a 100-MeV electron linac, a water-cooled Ta target, and an 11-m time-of-flight path. We measured the time-of-flight path length, the neutron energy spectra for different water levels inside the moderator, and the neutron total cross sections of polyethylene and copper by the transmission method.

상온 및 액체질소 온도에서 고속 중성자 조사된 원자로 압력 용기의 취화 현상에 관한 연구 (A Study on Embrittlement of Fast Neutron-irradiated Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels at Room- and Liquid Nitrogen-temperature)

  • 고속 중성자 조사한 원자로 압력 용기의 취하현상을 상온에서 X-선 회절 실험과 액체 질손 온도에서 M$\ "{o}$ssbauer 분광법으로 조사하였다. 시료의 중성자 조사량은 $10^{12},\;10^{13},\;10^{14},\;10^{15},\;10^{16},\;10^{17},\;10^{18}\;n/{\cal}cm^2$이다. X-선 회절 패턴에서 중성자 조사하지 않은 시료는 bcc 형태를 나타내었으나, 중성자 조사량이 $10^{17}\;n/{\cal}cm^2$ 이상인 시료에서는 bcc 구조가 사라지는 심각한 손상을 보였다. 모든 시료의 $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ 스펙트럼은 두개 혹은 그 이상의 sextet의 중첩을 보였다. 모든 $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ 스펙트럼은 본문에서는 3조의 sextet로 fitting 하였다. 이성질체 이동치와 사중극자 분열치는 거의 영에 가까운 값을 나타내었다. 액체 질소 온도에서 중성자 조사량이 $10^{17}\~10^{18}\;n/{\cal}cm^2$인 시료에서 S1 sextet의 초미세 자기장과 흡수 면적이 급격히 상승하는 현상을 관측하였으며, 상온에서 또한 이 현상을 관측하였다. 이는 중성자 조사에 의한 시료 내부의 $^{55}Mn$ 혹은 $^{56}Fe$$^{57}Fe$의 천이에 의한 $^{57}Fe$$M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ 핵종의 증가에 기인하는 것으로 추측된다.

비고용 V-Cu계 MA합금의 중성자 및 X선 회절에 의한 상분석 (Phase Analysis of Immiscible V-Cu MA Powders by Neutron and X-ray Diffraction)

  • The mechanical alloying (MA) effect in immiscible V-Cu system with positive heat of mixing was studied by not only the neutron and X-ray diffraction but also the analysis of DSC spectra. The total energy, ΔHt accumulated during MA for the mixture of $V_{50}$ $Cu_{50}$ / powders increased with milling time and approached the saturation value of 14 kJ/mol after 120 h of milling. It can be seen that the free energy difference between the amorphous phase and the pure V and Cu powders with an atomic ratio 5:5 is estimated to be 11 kJ/mol by Miedema et al. This is thermodynamically taken as one of the evidences for the amorphization. The structural changes of V-Cu MA powders were characterized by the X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. We take a full advantage of a negligibly small scattering length of the V atom in the neutron diffraction measurement. The neutron diffraction data definitely indicate that the amorphization proceeds gradually but incompletely even after 120 h of MA and bcc-Cu Bragg peaks appears after 60 h of MA.

GEANT4 characterization of the neutronic behavior of the active zone of the MEGAPIE spallation target

  • The increasing interest that GEANT4 is gaining nowadays, because of its special capabilities, prompted us to address its reliability in neutronic calculation for the realistic and complex spallation target MEGAPIE of the Paul Scherrer Institute of Switzerland. In this paper we have specifically addressed the neutronic characterization of the active zone of this target. Three physical quantities are evaluated: neutron flux spectra and total neutron fluxes on target's z-axis, and the neutron yield as a function of the target's altitude and radius. Comparison of the obtained results with those of the MCNPX reference code and some experimental measurements have confirmed the impact of the geometrical and proton beam models on the neutron fluxes. It has also allowed to reveal the intrinsic influence of the code type. The resulting differences reach a factor of ~2 for the beam model and 4-18% for the other parameters cumulated. The analysis of the neutron yield has led us to conclude that: 1) Increasing the productivity of the MEGAPIE target cannot be achieved simply by increasing the thickness of the target, if the irradiation parameters are not modified. 2) The size of the spallation area needs to be redefined more precisely.

Research on the optimization method for PGNAA system design based on Signal-to-Noise Ratio evaluation

  • In this research, for improving the measurement performance of Prompt Gamma-ray Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) set-up, a new optimization method for set-up design was proposed and investigated. At first, the calculation method for Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) was proposed. Since the SNR could be calculated and quantified accurately, the SNR was chosen as the evaluation parameter in the new optimization method. For discussing the feasibility of the SNR optimization method, two kinds of PGNAA set-ups were designed in the MCNP code, based on the SNR optimization method and the previous signal optimization method, respectively. Meanwhile, the single element spectra analysis method was proposed, and the analysis effect of single element spectra as well as element sensitivity were used for comparing the measurement performance. Since the simulation results showed the better measurement performance of set-up designed by SNR optimization method, the experimental set-ups were built for the further testing, finally demonstrating the feasibility of the SNR optimization method for PGNAA setup design.

DT 중성자 발생기에 의한 중성자 검출기 반응도 조사 (Investigation of Response of Several Neutron Surveymeters by a DT Neutron Generator)

  • 국내 교정기관 또는 표준기관은 중성자 검출기의 교정을 위해 비감속 및 중수감속 $^{252}Cf$ 선원과 $^{241}AmBe$ 선원을 사용하고 있다. 이런 선원들로 교정된 중성자 검출기를 이용하여 입자가속기와 같이 속중성자가 다량 존재하는 시설을 선량평가할 때, 그 정확도가 떨어지게 된다. 그 이유는, 대부분의 중성자 검출기는 열중성자에 민감하게 반응하므로 수 MeV 이상의 에너지를 가지는 속중성자장에 대한 선량당량 반응도는 부정확하다. 또한 높은 에너지의 중성자는 열중성자보다 선량기여정도가 훨씬 크기 때문이다. 이와 같은 이유로, 기존의 교정용 기준 중성자장이 아닌 수 MeV 이상의 속중성자가 존재하는 중성자장에서도 검출기를 교정할 필요가 있다. DT 중성자 발생기, 흑연집합체 그리고 폴리에틸렌 중성자 집속체를 사용하여 속중성자의 선속분율이 서로 다른 중성자장을 제작하였고, 이 중성자장에서 중성자 검출기의 선량당량 반응도를 측정하였다. 시험결과에 의하면, 속중성자 선속분율과 중성자 검출기의 종류에 따라 중성자 검출기의 반응도는 많은 차이를 보였다. 이러한 반응도 차이는 선량당량의 과대 및 과소평가를 의미하므로, 검출기가 사용되는 시설환경과 유사한 중성자장에서 반응도 교정이 필요함을 확인하였다.

  • Energy-resolved neutron imaging is an effective way to investigate the internal structure and residual stress of materials. Different sample sizes have varying requirements for the detector's imaging field of view (FOV) and spatial resolution. Therefore, a dual-mode energy-resolved neutron imaging detector was developed, which mainly consisted of a neutron scintillator screen, a mirror, imaging lenses, and a time-stamping optical fast camera. This detector could operate in a large FOV mode or a high spatial resolution mode. To evaluate the performance of the detector, the neutron wavelength spectra and the multiple spatial resolution tests were conducted at CSNS. The results demonstrated that the detector accurately measured the neutron wavelength spectra selected by a bandwidth chopper. The best spatial resolution was about 20 ㎛ in high spatial resolution mode after event reconstruction, and a FOV of 45.0 mm × 45.0 mm was obtained in large FOV mode. The feasibility was validated to change the spatial resolution and FOV by replacing the scintillator screen and adjusting the lens magnification.

중성자 조사한 ZnO 박막에 생성된 헥전환 불순물들fH 대한 연구 (A Study on Transmuted Impurity Atoms formed in Neukon-Irradiated ZnO Thin films)

  • Transmuted impurity atoms formed in neutron-irradiated ZnO thin films were theoretically identified first and then experimentally confirmed by Photoluminescence (PL). ZnO thin films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy were irradiated by neutron beam at room temperature. Among eight isotropes naturely exiting in ZnO films, only $^{64}Zn$, $^{68}Zn$, $^{70}Zn$ and $^{18}O$ were expected to transmute into $^{65}Cu$, $^{69}Ga$, $^{71}Ga$ and $^{19}F$, respectively. The concentrations of these transmuted atoms were estimated by considering natural abundance, neutron fluence, and neutron cross section. The neutron-irradiated ZnO thin films were characterized by PL. In the PL spectra of these ZnO thin film, the Cu-related PL peaks were seen, but the Ga- or F-associated PL peaks were absent. This observation demonstrates the existence of $^{65}Cu$ in the ZnO. In this paper, emission mechanism of Cu impurities wil1 be described and the reason for the absence of the Ga- or F-associated PL peaks will be discussed.
