  • The goal of neuropsychological tests is to identify the neuropsychological dysfunction in psychiatric disorders such as organic mental disorders and schizophrenia, to develop the exe-cutive and monitor treatment plan and to make a cognitive rehabilitation program. Also, it will provide a more useful information that neurpsychological tests will be applied to neurotic out-patients in combination with conventional psychological test. However, many researches should be performed to further clarify the usefulness of neuropsychological test in neurosis.

  • In recently the gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) has been known to induce the otolaryngologic manifestations. Pharyngeal neurosis is a disease which we could have not found the cause frequently. So we have studied the relation between the pharyngeal neurosis and the GERD among 50 patients who were diagnosed as pharyngeal neurosis after esophagogram and laryngoscopic examination. We performed esophageal manometry and 24hour double-probe pH-metry and then compared with normal control group(n=30). The results are as follows 1 Among 50 patients, 12(24%) patients were diagnosed as GERD by DeMeester scoring. 2. In esophageal manometry, the upper and lower esophageal sphincter between the patients and the control group have no significant difference(p>0.05) and 9 among 50 pateints showed abnormal peristaltic movement in esophageal body contraction. 3. In 24hour double-probe pH-metry, the esophageal probe showed that in GERD group(n= 12) the number of reflux episode, episodes greater than 5 minutes and the percentage of time

  • Objectives: This study was aimed to investigate the emotional state and personality characteristics of alopecia aerata patient and to determine whether these characteristics are similar with those of neurotic patient. Methods : 20 alopecia aerata patients, 20 neurotic patients, and 20 normal healthy controls were studied. Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), State and Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) and Korean standardized edition of Catell's 16 Personality factors Questionnaire(16PF) were used for assessment. Results: 1) Total score of BDI was higher in neurosis group than alopecia aerata group and normal control group(p<0.05). Inspire of statistical non-significance, total score of in alopecia aerata group was higher than normal control group. 2) Total scores of state anxiety and trait anxiety in alopecia aerata and neurosis group were significantly higher than normal control group(p<0.001). 3) In first-stratum source traits of 16PF, normal control group was significantly higher than alopecia aerata group and neurosis group in B-factor(intelligence) and C-factor(ego-strength)(p<0.05). Alopecia aerata group and neurosis group were significantly higher than normal control group in O-factor(guilt-proneness) and $Q_4-factor(tension,\;anxiety)$(p<0.001). 4) In second-stratum source traits of 16PF, alopecia aerata group and neurosis group were significantly higher than normal control group in ANX-factor(anxiety)(p<0.05). Conclusions : These results suggest that emotional state and personality characterstics of patients with alopecia aerata are a distinguishable different to compare with normal control, and are very similar with those of neurotic patients. The authors propose that psychiatric management in patient with alopecia aerata will be more benificial.

  • The study investigated whether the characteristics of human figures in Kinetic Family Drawing showed significant differences according to the drawer's personality (neurosis, intellectual openness, friendliness, extroversion, sincerity). The participants of this study were 340 high-school girls. The Five Factors Personality Test was conducted to assess personality factors and the Kinetic Family Drawing Test was used to obtain data on drawing characteristics. The data were analyzed using Chi-square. The results of this study are as follows: First, there were significant differences in ten subcategories such as face, countenance, eyes, mouth, inclusion of body. hands, posture, erasure, exertion of pressure on the paper, and lines, according to the degree of neurosis. Second, there were significant differences in countenance, eyes, posture, exertion of pressure on the paper, and lines according to the degree of extroversion. Third, there were significant differences in face, countenance, eyes, and posture, according to the degree of openness. Fourth, there were significant differences in erasure and lines according to the degree of friendliness Fifth, there were significant differences in countenance and posture according to the degree of sincerity. This study proved that among the personality factors, neurosis is most highly related with characteristics of persons drawn in the Kinetic Family I)lawing, whereas countenance and posture in the drawing were highly indicative of personality factors.

  • Samuel Beckett's literary sympathies with underdogs enslaved to authoritative figures, found in his earliest plays, continued in a more or less subdued form in his later plays: Not I is a good case in point thematizing a social authority psychologically embedded within a subject. The incessant bouts of self-defense, or confessional, which Mouth carries out on a dark stage is directed to an inner authority. In Civilization and Its Discontents (1931), Freud's diagnosis for individuals torn between the opposite calls of a social order-- which he called, by turns, civil society, civilization, and culture--and of individual freedom was a "neurosis." What Not I dramatizes seems to be this state of neurosis suffered by a subject bound to the contradictory calls of an internal social authority, which forces Mouth to carry on a confessional till she obtains a symbolically/linguistically viable social title of "I," and of her individualistic denial of the position("what?..who?..no!.. she!.."). Mouth's ordeal on stage does not signify the psychological pressure of the social system, with its disciplinary measures of guilt, justice, and punishment, triumphs over individualistic irregularities and abnormalities, for her "maddened" confession will never see its closure. The opposite psychological forces at work inside Mouth, who is both "in" and "out[side]" "this world," will keep engaging in an eternal battle. In a way, she is a perfect parable about us humans living within a system, "discontent" and hung between the contradictory calls of individualism and social collectiveness.

  • Heracles has been adored as one of the bravest mythical heroes all times and all places because it was thought that he protected his people and lands from invasion, plunder, or enslavement. However, I argue Heracles should be criticized as a war machine of violence and murder. War is homicide itself, which means humans kill humans, unlike other violent and sensual animals such as dogs, apes or pigs. It is ironically ambivalent to celebrate an excellent hero in homicide in this age of nuclear weapons. This irony leads to S. Freud's 'Death instinct' or Malcolm Potts's 'war genes'. Unlike Freud, Malcolm Potts insists that humans' war genes can be changed into peace genes because they were just remains of Stone Age. According to Apollodoros' myth or Euripides' tragedies, he was mad enough to kill his own sons and wife after he had murdered the king Lycos in Thebes. Though Rene Girard says that his madness was derived from contagion of violence and blood, I think that his madness came from horrible experiences of cruel wars as well as Hera's maltreatment in his childhood. It will be demonstrated to be war neurosis, that is, PTSD(Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). In a different way from the modern media in which Heracles is being glorified as a purest macho and war machine, his old myths show the ambivalence of his violence and murder, and his daily misfortunes owing to his madness. In this sense, his myth is a kind of warning to the humans not to kill each other, or to stop wars.

  • The styloid process is a slender, cylindrical bony outgrowth located immediately in front of the stylomastoid foramen and fused to the inferior aspect of the temporal bone. The elongated styloid process is not so frequent and the styloid syndrome is a dull, nagging pain in the oropharynx, often referred to the ear and the mastoid region. The symptoms are secondary stimulation of the nerves and vessels which pass close to the tip of the process. The clinical diagnosis is certain if the elongated styloid process is palpated through the tonsillar area. Radiologic investigation give information about the length of the styloid process and medial angulation. The treatment of choice is surgical shortening of the process. Recently, the authors experienced a case of elongated styloid syndrome misdiagnosed as pharyngeal neurosis in a 28 year-old male patient.
