  • In this paper, we proposed a learning algorithm for the neuro-fuzzy modeling using a learning rule to adapt clustering. The proposed algorithm includes the data partition, assigning the rule into the process of partition, and optimizing the parameters using predetermined threshold value in self-constructing algorithm. In order to improve the clustering, the learning method of neuro-fuzzy model is extended and the learning scheme has been modified such that the learning of overall model is extended based on the error-derivative learning. The effect of the proposed method is presented using simulation compare with previous ones.

  • Objective : The water extract of Seokchangpowonji-san (SWS) has traditionally been used for treatment of dementia in oriental medicine. However, little is known about the mechanism by which the water extract of SWS rescues cells from neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease. Methods & Results: This study was designed to investigate the protective mechanisms of SWS on $\beta-amyloid$ or $H_2O_2$-induced$ cytotoxicity in neuro 2A cells. $H_2O_2$ markedly decreased the viability of neuro 2A cells, which was characterized by apparent apoptotic features such as membrane blebbing as well as fragmentation of genomic DNA and nuclei. However, the water extract of SWS significantly reduced $H_2O_2-induced$ cell death and apoptotic characteristics through reduction of intracellular peroxide generation. Also, the. extract prevented the mitochondrial dysfunction including the disruption of mitochondria membrane permeability transition (MPT) and the modulation in expression of Bcl-2 family proteins in $H_2O_2treated$ neuro 2A cells. Furthermore, pretreatment with SWS inhibited the activation of caspase-3, and in turn, degradation of ICAD/DFF45 was completely abolished in $H_2O_2-treated$ cells. Conclusion: Taken together, the data suggest that the protective effects of the water extract of SWS against $\beta-amyloid$ induced oxidative injuries may be achieved through modulation of mitochondrial dysfunction.

  • Number of elderly patients requiring nerve blocks have been increasing in recent years. We had two elderly patients who suffered stroke one day and three days after lumbar facet joint block and lumbar single epidural block respectively. Both patients due to their advanced age had potential risk factor to suffer one or more of the following; stroke, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Due to our experience with these patients, we suggested the following: (1) Nerve blocks should be reconsidered for elderly patient who posesses a potential risk factor to suffer a stroke. (2) Prior to invasive block administration of mild sedatives or analgesics may provide beneficial effects for patients with hypertension. (3) Adequately informed consent must be fully discussed time of consultation with patient scheduled for nerve block especially for elderly and risky patient.

  • Dodam formula (Dodam) has been used for neurodegenerative disease in Oriental medicine. Dodam is capable of protecting diverse kinds of cells from damage caused by a variety of toxic stimuli. In the present study, we investigated the underlying protective mechanism of Dodam on rotenone-induced cytotoxicity in rat neuroblastoma Neuro-2A cells. Treatment with Neuro-2A cells with rotenone caused the loss of cell viability, and condensation and fragmentation of nuclei, which was associated with the elevation of ROS level, and lipid peroxidation, the increase in Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. Rotenone induced mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by mitochondrial membrane potential loss and cytochrome-c release. These phenotypes induced by rotenone were reversed by pretreatment with Dodam. Our results suggested that major features of rotenone-induced neurotoxicity are partially mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, and that Dodam markedly protects Neuro-2A cells from oxidative injury. These data indicated that Dodam might provide a useful therapeutic strategy in treatment of the neurodegenerative diseases caused by oxidative injuries.

  • Objective: The water extract of Chilgi-tang (CGT) has been traditionally used in treatment of heart diseases caused by stress in Oriental Medicine. However, little is known about the mechanism by which CGT rescues neuronal cells from injury damage. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of CGT on Neuro-2A cells by glucose deprivation-induced cell death. Methods: We investigated how cell death induced by glucose deprivation was associated with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Result: The CGT treatment prior to glucose deprivation insult significantly reduced the number of cell deaths and the glucose deprivation-induced increase in ROS. Nitric oxide (NO) was also attenuated by CGT treatment. In addition, we demonstrated that the anti-cell death effect of CGT was blocked by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) activation. Finally, pretreatment of cells with a hemin, HO-1 inducer, reduced glucose deprivation-induced cell death. In contrast, pretreatment of cells with a ZnPP, HO-1 activity inhibitor, attenuated CGT-induced inhibition of cell death. Conclusions: These findings indicate that ROS plays an important role in glucose deprivation-induced cell death and that CGT may prevent glucose deprivation-induced cell death by inhibiting the ROS generation through HO-1 activation in Neuro-2A cells.

  • The negative output elementary Luo converter is a newly developed DC-DC converter. Due to the time-varying and switching nature of the above converter, its dynamic behavior becomes highly non-linear. Conventional controllers are incapable of providing good dynamic performance for such a converter and, hence, a neural network is utilized as a controller in this work. The performance of the chosen Luo converter using PI versus neuro controls is compared under load and line disturbances using MATLAB and TMS320F2407 DSP. The results validate the superiority of the developed neuro controller.

  • A 72-year-old female patient was presented complaining of unbearable abdominal pain in the upper left quadrant at our hospital. Two weeks earlier she had developed a vesicular eruption on the right C3 dermatome and 1 week earlier she had experienced a vesicular eruption on the left T11 dermatome. Her medical history was unremarkable. She had suffered from severe abdominal pain in the upper left quadrant for 10 days and the mild pain in the right shoulder region for 20 days. The pain in the upper left quadrant had increased and was unresponsive to drugs prescribed by the local clinic. And we performed T11 root block with 0.5% lidocaine 5 ml and dexametasone 5 mg, and thoracic epidural blockade on 1st hospital day under diagnosis of herpes zoster infection. Her VAS were improved from 10 to 2 on 2nd hospital day. We performed thoracic epidural blockade with 0.5% lidocaine 6 ml. Her VAS were changed from 2 to 7 and so then we performed the thoracic epidural blockade with 0.5% lidocaine 5 ml and triamcinolone 40 mg on 3rd hospital day. On 4th hospital day, her VAS were from 7 to 1. After 4 month of our managements she was tolerable without any medications.

  • Objective : The authors investigated whether rotenone induces cellular death also in non-dopaminergic neurons and high concentration of potassium ion can show protective effect for non-dopaminergic neuron in case of rotenone-induced cytotoxicity. Methods : Neuro 2A cells was treated with rotenone, and their survival as well as cell death mechanism was estimated using 3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium[MTT] assay, Lactate dehydrogenase[LDH] release assay, fluorescence microscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis. The changes in rotenone-treated cells was also studied after co-treatment of 50mM KCl. And the protective effect of KCl was evaluated by mitochondrial membrane potential assay and compared with the effects of various antioxidants. Results : Neuro 2A cells treated with rotenone underwent apoptotic death showing chromosome condensation and fragmentation as well as DNA laddering. Co-incubation of neuro 2A cells with 50mM KCl prevented it from the cytotoxicity induced by rotenone. Intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species[ROS] resulting by rotenone were significantly reduced by 50mM KCl. Potassium exhibited significantly similar potency compared to the antioxidants. Conclusion : The present findings showed that potassium attenuated rotenone-induced cytotoxicity, intracellular accumulation of ROS, and fragmentation of DNA in Neuro 2A cells. These findings suggest the therapeutic potential of potassium ion in neuronal apoptosis, but the practical application of high concentration of potassium ion remains to be settled.

  • The purpose of the study were to investigate the effect of the neuro-feedback program which improves brain function and stress reduction effect. The research design is one group pretest-posttest survey. 121 nursing students of a college in the Busan region took part in the study. Training involving the neuro-feedback program was conducted twice a week, 30 minutes per session, for a total of 10 weeks. The collected data was encoded and analyzed using SPSS 12.0 Version. The brain function and stress levels of the subjects were analyzed through the before-and-after results of the training were analyzed using a paired t-test. The results of the study showed that the BQ and SQ were enhanced as a result of the neuro-feedback. In particular, there were significant increases in the SRQ, ATQ, ACQ, and EQ of the BQ. SQ is correlated with the prevalence rate and resistance to disease, meaning not only psychological anxiety, uneasiness and excitement, but also physical anxiety and response to disease. Based on the study, by using the neuro-feedback training as a program for stress reduction, it is expected that nursing students will receive less stress from internal and external factors, and their ability to cope with stress will be enhanced.
