The use of optimum content of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) such as limestone filler (LF) to blend with Portland cement has been resulted in many environmental and technical advantages, such as increase in physical properties, enhancement of sustainability in concrete industry and reducing $CO_2$ emission are well known. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been already applied in civil engineering to solve a wide variety of problems such as the prediction of concrete compressive strength. The feed forward back propagation (FFBP) algorithm and Tan-sigmoid transfer function were used for the ANNs training in this study. The training, testing and validation of data during the backpropagation training process yielded good correlations exceeding 97%. A parametric study was conducted to study the sensitivity of the developed model to certain essential parameters affecting the compressive strength of concrete. The effects and benefits of limestone filler on hardened properties of the concrete such as compressive strength were well established endorsing previous results in the literature. The results of this study revealed that the proposed ANNs model showed a high performance as a feasible and highly efficient tool for simulating the LF concrete compressive strength prediction.
In this study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to predict the settlement of pad footings on cohesionless soils based on standard penetration test. To achieve this, a computer programme was developed to calculate the settlement of pad footings from five traditional methods. The footing geometry (length and width), the footing embedment depth, $D_f$, the bulk unit weight, ${\gamma}$, of the cohesionless soil, the footing applied pressure, Q, and corrected standard penetration test, $N_{cor}$, varied during the settlement analyses and the settlement value of each footing was calculated for each method. Then, an ANN model was developed for each traditional method to predict the settlement by using the results of the analyses. The settlement values predicted from the ANN model were compared with the settlement values calculated from the traditional method for each method. The predicted values were found to be quite close to the calculated values. It has been demonstrated that the ANN models developed can be used as an accurate and quick tool at the preliminary designing stage of pad footings on cohesionless soils without a need to perform any manual work such as using tables or charts. Sensitivity analyses were also performed to examine the relative importance of the factors affecting settlement prediction. According to the analyses, for each traditional method, $N_{cor}$ is found to be the most important parameter while ${\gamma}$ is found to be the least important parameter.
In order to improve the performance of image classifications using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), applying a category hierarchy to the classification can be a useful idea. However, the visual separation of object categories is very different according to the upper and lower category levels and highly uneven in image classifications. Therefore, it is doubtable whether the use of category hierarchies for classification is effective in CNN. In this paper, we have clarified whether the image classification using category hierarchies improves classification performance, and found at which level of hierarchy classification is more effective. For experiments we divided the image classification task according to the upper and lower category levels and assigned image data to each CNN model. We identified and compared the results of three classification models and analyzed them. Through the experiments, we could confirm that classification effectiveness was not improved by reduction of number of categories in a classification model. And we found that only with the re-training method in the last network layer, the performance of lower category classification was not improved although that of higher category classification was improved.

In this study, tomato maturity was estimated based on deep learning for a harvesting robot. Tomato images were obtained using a RGB camera installed on a monitoring robot, which was developed previously, and the samples were cropped to 128 × 128 size images to generate a dataset for training the classification model. The classification model was constructed based on convolutional neural networks, and the mean-variance loss was used to learn implicitly the distribution of the data features by class. In the test stage, the tomato maturity was estimated as a continuous index, which has a range of 0 to 1, by calculating the expected class value. The results show that the F1-score of the classification was approximately 0.94, and the performance was similar to that of a deep learning-based classification task in the agriculture field. In addition, it was possible to estimate the distribution in each maturity stage. From the results, it was found that our approach can not only classify the discrete maturation stages of the tomatoes but also can estimate the continuous maturity.
In this paper, we propose a multi-site based earthquake event classification method using graph convolution networks. In the traditional earthquake event classification methods using deep learning, they used single-site observation to estimate seismic event class. However, to achieve robust and accurate earthquake event classification on the seismic observation network, the method using the information from the multi-site observations is needed, instead of using only single-site data. Firstly, our proposed model employs convolution neural networks to extract informative embedding features from the single-site observation. Secondly, graph convolution networks are used to integrate the features from several stations. To evaluate our model, we explore the model structure and the number of stations for ablation study. Finally, our multi-site based model outperforms up to 10 % accuracy and event recall rate compared to single-site based model.

An on-line measurement of the workpiece hardened depth in laser surface hardening processes is very much difficult to achieve, since the hardening process occurs in depth wise direction. In this paper, the hardened depth is estimated using a multilayered neural network. Input data of the neural network are the surface temperatures at arbitrary chosen five surface points, laser power and traveling speed of laser beam torch. To simulate the actual hardening process, a finite difference method(FDM) is used to model the process. Since this model yields the calculation results of the temperature distribution around the workpiece volume in the vicinity of the laser torch, this model is used to obtain the network's training data and laser to evaluate the performance of the neural network estimator. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can be used to estimate the hardened depth with reasonable accuracy.
Flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) of carbon steel piping is a significant problem in nuclear power plants. The basic process of FAC is currently understood relatively well; however, the accuracy of prediction models of the wall-thinning rate under an FAC environment is not reliable. Herein, we propose a methodology to construct pipe wall-thinning rate prediction models using artificial neural networks and a convolutional neural network, which is confined to a straight pipe without geometric changes. Furthermore, a methodology to generate training data is proposed to efficiently train the neural network for the development of a machine learning-based FAC prediction model. Consequently, it is concluded that machine learning can be used to construct pipe wall thinning rate prediction models and optimize the number of training datasets for training the machine learning algorithm. The proposed methodology can be applied to efficiently generate a large dataset from an FAC test to develop a wall thinning rate prediction model for a real situation.
The Neural Network Models which mathematically interpret human thought processes were applied to resolve the uncertainty of model parameters and to increase the model's output for the streamflow forecast model. In order to test and verify the flood discharge forecast model eight flood events observed at Kumho station located on the midstream of Kumho river were chosen. Six events of them were used as test data and two events for verification. In order to make an analysis the Levengerg-Marquart method was used to estimate the best parameter for the Neural Network model. The structure of the model was composed of five types of models by varying the number of hidden layers and the number of nodes of hidden layers. Moreover, a logarithmic-sigmoid varying function was used in first and second hidden layers, and a linear function was used for the output. As a result of applying Neural Networks models for the five models, the N10-6model was considered suitable when there is one hidden layer, and the Nl0-9-5model when there are two hidden layers. In addition, when all the Neural Network models were reviewed, the Nl0-9-5model, which has two hidden layers, gave the most preferable results in an actual hydro-event.
In the various kinds of intelligent services, many studies for detecting emotion are in progress. Particularly, studies on emotion recognition at the particular time have been conducted in order to provide personalized experiences to the audience in the field of exhibition though facial expressions change as time passes. So, the aim of this paper is to build a model to predict the audience's emotion from the changes of facial expressions while watching an exhibit. The proposed model is based on both sequential neural network and the Valence-Arousal model. To validate the usefulness of the proposed model, we performed an experiment to compare the proposed model with the standard neural-network-based model to compare their performance. The results confirmed that the proposed model considering time sequence had better prediction accuracy.
Several methods have been proposed to apply artificial neural networks to text compression in the past. However, the networks and targets are both limited to the small size due to hardware capability in the past. Modern GPUs have much better calculation capability than CPUs in an order of magnitude now, even though CPUs have become faster. It becomes possible now to train greater and complex neural networks in a shorter time. This paper proposed a method to transform the distribution of original data with a probabilistic neural predictor. Experiments were performed on a feedforward neural network and a recurrent neural network with gated-recurrent units. The recurrent neural network model outperformed feedforward network in compression rate and prediction accuracy.
