In clinical decision support system(CDSS), unlike rule-based expert method, appropriate data-driven machine learning method can easily provide the information of individual feature(clinical test) for disease classification. However, currently developed methods focus on the improvement of the classification accuracy for diagnosis. With the analysis of feature importance in classification, one may infer the novel clinical test sets which highly differentiate the specific diseases or disease states. In this background, we introduce a novel CDSS that integrate a classifier and feature selection module together. Random forest algorithm is applied for the classifier and the feature importance measure. The system selects the significant clinical tests discriminating the diseases by examining the classification error during backward elimination of the features. The superior performance of random forest algorithm in clinical classification was assessed against artificial neural network and decision tree algorithm by using breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease data in UCI Machine Learning Repository. The test with the same data sets shows that the proposed system can successfully select the significant clinical test set for each disease.

The inspection of cracks on the surface of tunnel linings is a common method of evaluate the condition of the tunnel. In particular, determining the thickness and shape of a crack is important because it indicates the external forces applied to the tunnel and the current condition of the concrete structure. Recently, several automatic crack detection methods have been proposed to identify cracks using captured tunnel lining images. These methods apply an image-segmentation mechanism with well-annotated datasets. However, generating the ground truths requires many resources, and the small proportion of cracks in the images cause a class-imbalance problem. A weakly annotated dataset is generated to reduce resource consumption and avoid the class-imbalance problem. However, the use of the dataset results in a large number of false positives and requires post-processing for accurate crack detection. To overcome these issues, we propose a crack detection method using a ternary classifier. The proposed method significantly reduces the false positive rate, and the performance (as measured by the F1 score) is improved by 0.33 compared to previous methods. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An extreme learning machine (ELM) is an efficient learning algorithm that is based on the generalized single, hidden-layer feed-forward networks (SLFNs), which perform well in classification applications. Many studies have demonstrated its superiority over the existing classical algorithms: support vector machine (SVM) and BP neural network. This paper presents a novel face recognition approach based on a multi-class project extreme learning machine (MPELM) classifier and 2D Gabor transform. First, all face image features were extracted using 2D Gabor filters, and the MPELM classifier was used to determine the final face classification. Two well-known face databases (CMU-PIE and ORL) were used to evaluate the performance. The experimental results showed that the MPELM-based method outperformed the ELM-based method as well as other methods.
We present in this work a segmentation method of E. coli bacterial images generated via phase contrast microscopy using a deep learning based hybrid feature generation. Unlike conventional machine learning methods that use the hand-crafted features, we adopt the denoising autoencoder in order to generate a precise and accurate representation of the pixels. We first construct a hybrid vector that combines original image, difference of Gaussians and image gradients. The created hybrid features are then given to a deep autoencoder that learns the pixels' internal dependencies and the cells' shape and boundary information. The latent representations learned by the autoencoder are used as the inputs of a softmax classification layer and the direct outputs from the classifier represent the coarse segmentation mask. Finally, the classifier's outputs are used as prior information for a graph partitioning based fine segmentation. We demonstrate that the proposed hybrid vector representation manages to preserve the global shape and boundary information of the cells, allowing to retrieve the majority of the cellular patterns without the need of any post-processing.

This paper suggests the method to recognize the various defect patterns of cold mill strip using binary decision tree constructed by genetic algorithm automatically. In case of classifying the complex the complex patterns with high similarity like the defect patterns of cold mill strip, the selection of the optimal feature set and the structure of recognizer is important for high recognition rate. In this paper genetic algorithm is used to select a subset of the suitable features at each node in binary decision tree. The feature subset of maximum fitness is chosen and the patterns are classified into two classes by linear decision function. After this process is repeated at each node until all the patterns are classified respectively into individual classes. In this way , binary decision tree classifier is constructed automatically. After construction binary decision tree, the final recognizer is accomplished by the learning process of neural network using a set of standard p tterns at each node. In this paper, binary decision tree classifier is applied to recognition of the defect patterns of cold mill strip and the experimental results are given to show the usefulness of the proposed scheme.

This paper suggests a method to recognize the various defect patterns of a cold mill strip using a binary decision tree automatically constructed by a genetic algorithm(GA). In classifying complex patterns with high similarity like the defect patterns of a cold mill stirp, the selection of an optimal feature set and an appropriate recognizer is important to achieve high recognition rate. In this paper a GA is used to select a subset of the suitable features at each node in the binary decision tree. The feature subset with maximum fitness is chosen and the patterns are classified into two classes using a linear decision function. This process is repeated at each node until all the patterns are classified into individual classes. In this way, the classifier using the binary decision tree is constructed automatically. After constructing the binary decision tree, the final recognizer is accomplished by having neural network learning sits of standard patterns at each node. In this paper, the classifier using the binary decision tree is applied to the recognition of defect patterns of a cold mill strip, and the experimental results are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed scheme.

Recently, malware classification based on Deep Neural Networks (DNN) has gained significant attention due to the rise in popularity of artificial intelligence (AI). DNN-based malware classifiers are a novel solution to combat never-before-seen malware families because this approach is able to classify malwares based on structural characteristics rather than requiring particular signatures like traditional malware classifiers. However, these DNN-based classifiers have been found to lack robustness against malwares that are carefully crafted to evade detection. These specially crafted pieces of malware are referred to as adversarial examples. We consider a clever adversary who has a thorough knowledge of DNN-based malware classifiers and will exploit it to generate a crafty malware to fool DNN-based classifiers. In this paper, we propose a DNN-based malware classifier that becomes resilient to these kinds of attacks by exploiting Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based data augmentation. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme classifies malware, including AEs, with a false positive rate (FPR) of 3.0% and a balanced accuracy of 70.16%. These are respective 26.1% and 18.5% enhancements when compared to a traditional DNN-based classifier that does not exploit GAN.

This paper presents a study on the off-line handwritten Hangul (Korean) character recognition using the partially connected neural network (PCNN), which is based on partial connections between the input receptive fields and the hidden nodes. The hidden nodes of three PCNNs have ten receptive fields and different input feature sets. And we introduce modular partially connected neural network (MPCNN), The MPCNN combines three PCNNs with a merging network. The learning scheme of the proposed networks is composed of two steps: PCNN learning step and the merging step of combining three PCNN s. In the merging step, another merging PCNN network is introduced and trained by regarding the hidden output of each PCNN as a new input feature vector. The performance of the proposed classifier is verified on the recognition of 18 off-line handwritten Hangul characters widely used in business cards in Korea.

With the evolution of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, the routing policy has foremost importance in the Internet of Things (IoT). A systematic routing policy is one of the primary mechanics to make certain the precise and robust transmission of wireless sensor networks in an energy-efficient manner. In an IoT environment, WSN is utilized for controlling services concerning data like, data gathering, sensing and transmission. With the advantages of IoT potentialities, the traditional routing in a WSN are augmented with decision-making in an energy efficient manner to concur finer optimization. In this paper, we study how to combine IoT-based deep learning classifier with routing called, Kriging Regressive Deep Belief Neural Learning (KR-DBNL) to propose an efficient data packet routing to cope with scalability issues and therefore ensure robust data packet transmission. The KR-DBNL method includes four layers, namely input layer, two hidden layers and one output layer for performing data transmission between source and destination sensor node. Initially, the KR-DBNL method acquires the patient data from different location. Followed by which, the input layer transmits sensor nodes to first hidden layer where analysis of energy consumption, bandwidth consumption and light intensity are made using kriging regression function to perform classification. According to classified results, sensor nodes are classified into higher performance and lower performance sensor nodes. The higher performance sensor nodes are then transmitted to second hidden layer. Here high performance sensor nodes neighbouring sensor with higher signal strength and frequency are selected and sent to the output layer where the actual data packet transmission is performed. Experimental evaluation is carried out on factors such as energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, packet loss rate and end-to-end delay with respect to number of patient data packets and sensor nodes.
Rapid and quantitative analysis of physiological change and clavulanic acid production was studied by the combination of pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PyMS) and artificial neural network (ANN) in Streptomyces clavuligerus. Firstly, the continuous culture studies were carried out to get the physiological background and PyMS samples. Clavulanic acid production was inversely related to growth rate: Mycelium growth and $q_{cal}$ were optimum at 0.1 $h^{-1}\; and \;0.025 h^{-1}$ respectively. Changes in specific nutrient uptake rates ($q_{gly}$ and $q_{amn}$) also affected clavulanic acid production since clavulanic acid production appeared to be stimulated by the limitation of carbon and nitrogen. Fermentation broth containing mycelium taken from continuous cultures was analyzed by PyMS, and the PyMS spectra were analyzed with multivariate statistics. PCCV plots revealed that samples harvested under the same culture condition were clustered together but samples from different culture conditions formed separate clusters. To deconvolute the pyrolysis mass spectra so as to obtain quantitative information on the concentration of clavulanic acid, ANN was trained on Py MS data using a radial basis function classifier. The results showed that the physiological stages with different growth rate were successfully differentiated and it was possible to monitor the clavulanic acid production precisely and rapidly.
