This study quantitatively evaluated size selectivity for three netting shapes (T0; regular, T45, T90) and hanging ratio (35%, 70%) of T0 netting used for trawl codend. The size selectivity experiment was performed in a tank using a cube experimental model with a length of 50 cm on one side and 389 experimental individuals, jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus). In the selectivity analysis, a selectivity curve was created based on the selection ratio using a logistic function, and the 25%, 50%, and 70% selection length and selection range (SR) were obtained. The T0 netting was 19.54 cm when the 50% selective length, which is a selectivity evaluation index, had a hanging ratio of 35%, a selection range of 0.51 cm, and 22.70 cm and 3.08 cm for the hanging ratio of 70%. The T45 netting was 24.34 cm and 2.13 cm, and the T90 netting was 23.51 cm and 2.84 cm. The results of the T45 netting and the T90 netting are similar, and the 50% selection length and selection range were relatively larger than the T0 netting. There was a significant difference in the correlation between the circumference of the inner circle of the mesh by the shape of the netting and the body girth of the experimental individual (Pearson test, r = 0.86, p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the correlation between the selection ratio by the T0 netting, T45 netting, and T90 netting with a 70% hanging ratio (one-way ANOVA, p > 0.05). The results of this study showed that selectivity such as T45 netting and T90 netting appeared when the hanging ratio, which maximizes the area of T0 netting, was maintained at 70%.

Recently, copper alloy netting has been proposed as a material for aquaculture facilities that can be set in harsh offshore environments. To design a cage made of copper alloy netting, it is necessary to calculate the flow of water through the netting and force of external sources on the netting. Therefore, this study measured and analyzed the current velocity reduction after passing through the netting and the hydrodynamic forces acting on the netting using copper alloy netting with nine solidity ratios. As a result of the reduction rate of the flow velocity through the netting, the flow reduction rate was increased as the solidity ratio of netting was increased. The flow reduction rate was also increased as the attack angle on the netting was decreased. In analyzing the resistance on the netting, we also discovered that resistance was increased with increase in the flow velocity and solidity ratio. An analysis of the hydrodynamic coefficient acting on the netting is shown that the drag coefficient tends to increase as the attack angle increases. We also analyzed the hydrodynamic coefficient according to the variation of the Reynolds number. When the drag coefficients acting on the netting were analyzed with the different Reynolds numbers, the Reynolds number increased from over 0.3 m/s to a relative constant. Finally, the copper alloy nettings had a smaller velocity reduction rate when comparing the flow velocity reduction rate between copper alloy nettings and nylon nettings.

A net-assembling company for gill net fishing gears makes a design based on the size of nets provided and determines floats, types of weights, and numbers. In addition, through the accurate examination of net weights in the process of fishing gear designing, it can prevent an excessive use of designing costs. The weight of twine can be easily calculated by its thickness differences, but the weight of netting has errors to be calibrated since the weight of netting is not changing exponentially with the changes of number and size of meshes. This study aims to suggest and empirically analyze the methods for estimating the weights of netting in accordance with the changes of number, size and thickness of meshes for a sound management of netting and net-assembling companies. Results indicated that the method using the knots and legs of netting was not practically usable because the errors were increased as the number of mesh increased. However, the method using netting area shown its usage potentiality with the calibration of the increasing ratio of mesh numbers.

Swelling of the heat-treated netting for gillnet was estimated through the netting height in square acrylic tank. Experimental Nylon netting and PBSAT netting were heat-treated by using the high-degree vacuum method in hot water after net making. Heat-treatment temperatures were conducted with Nylon netting $105^{\circ}C$ and PBSAT netting $62^{\circ}C$, $65^{\circ}C$, $66^{\circ}C$, $67^{\circ}C$. The swelling measurement method of a netting using the square tank was capable of the reduction measurement errors comparing with measurement methods of a mesh inner angle and the shortening rate of a mesh size. In addition, this method was available to comparison evaluation for each netting more easily. Wet type heat-treatment apparatus with high-degree vacuum was shown higher $7{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ inner side temperature than a setting temperature. The tensile strength and elongation of Nylon netting and PBSAT netting were shown higher wet condition than dry condition. The tensile strengths of PBSAT monofilaments in dry and wet condition were sharply decreased at heat-treatment temp. $75^{\circ}C$ than heat-treatment temp. $74^{\circ}C$.

Capture efficiencies of commercial shrimp trawls may improve if their designs took into better account behavioral responses of wild shrimp to approaching cod-end of the trawls. Here we report results of water tunnel-based experimental studies of responses of wild California target prawns to several different near-realistic netting configurations over a range of water velocities (0.3-0.7 m/s). Netting panels were oriented at parallel to water flows (FP) on the bottom of test section, vertical (VT) or diagonal sloping backward (DG), bottom to top. Behavioral responses were recorded by video camera and analyzed frame by frame. Measured responses included rates of penetrating through netting by behavioral features and tail-flip frequencies. Frequencies of prawn passing through the nets increased with flow speed for both orientations and were higher at given speeds for sloped nets. Other behavioral features (e.g., passage head-or tail-first) also varied significantly with water velocities and netting orientation. Interactions of penetrating rates between netting orientations and flow speeds also were significantly dependent, except for prawn size. Additional studies are needed of other shrimp species and at higher water velocities more similar to actual field operations using trawls to improve size selectivity.

The objective of this study was to estimate physical properties and fishing performances of net twine with improved PBS copolymer resin (Bio-new), the existing PBS/PBAT blending resin (Bio-old) and commercial Nylon (Nylon). The tensile strength of Bio-new monofilament was equal to Bio-old and the elongation of Bio-new was about 6 % higher than that of Bio-old in wet condition. The physical properties tests were carried out to estimate breaking load and stiffness in dry and wet conditions, respectively. In the results, the breaking load of Nylon netting was the highest whereas the elongation of Bio-new was 1.4 times higher than that of Nylon netting in wet condition. The breaking load of Bio-old netting was about 9.2 % higher than that of Bio-new netting. However, the elongation of the Bio-new netting was about 3% higher than that of Bio-old. The stiffness of the Bio-new compared to Bio-old was improved about 34 % in dry condition and about 32 % in wet condition. The filed experiments of the fishing performance were conducted with three kinds of drift nets with different netting materials in the coastal sea of Jeju. The each experimental drift net made of different materials showed the similar fishing performance. Bio-old drift net yielded less catches of small sized yellow croaker than other drift nets. The netting materials affected the fishing performance and length distribution of catches in the drift nets.
Visual stimuli of nets, which affect fishing selectivity, vary by twine diameter, color, and material under different light conditions and visual geometries. In this study, two cylindrical model codends of two mesh sizes, 28 and 43 mm, were made of high-contrast, dark brown polyethylene (PE) netting twine and low contrast, light-blue polyamid (PA) monofilament twine. Each model codend was filled with juvenile seabream and set in the water channel of a light-blue circular tank under a flow speed 0.8 m/s for 30 min. Light conditions were set to relatively bright, dim, and dark. The resulting retention rates of juvenile seabream were 15-35% lower for the low-contrast codend with PA monofilament than for the high contrast PE twine netting under bright and dim light conditions, while no difference was observed under dark conditions. The effects of mesh size and netting contrast on the retention rate were dependent on the light level, while the retention rate due to netting contrast was independent of mesh size. Therefore, low-contrast nets in the codend could help to reduce juvenile bycatch by disturbing the orderly optomotor response.

In order to analysis creep characteristics and elastic recovery of the high-tech fibers for fishing gear materials, creep and elasticity tests were carried out on netting twines made of nylon, kevlar 29 and techmilon respectively. After creep tests, the rupture surface of raw materials was observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results obtained are as follows: 1. Netting twines were arranged in order of creep rupture time as follow: techmilon, kevlar 29, nylon. The creep progressive pace was the fastest in techmilon. 2. In order of the creep elongating, netting twines were arranged as follows: nylon, techmilon, kevlar 29. 3. The rupture time T sub(r) decreased almost linearly with the increase of applied load L on the log-log scaled graph. The empirical equations computed for kevlar 29 and techmilon are as follows: T sub(r kevlar 29)=1.9512$\times$1037L super(-15.773). T sub(r techmilon)=2.7146$\times$1016L super(-6.831). 4. It was observed by SEM that creep was progressed in all netting twines. The difference of rupture morphology was recognized clearly in tensile and creep tests. 5. In order of the elastic recovery, netting twines were arranged as follows: techmilon, kevlar 29, nylon.

The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal shapes and arrangements of sinkers attached to net cages to prevent their deformation in a current. A series of model experiments were conducted in a circulating water channel, using 5 different types of sinker(high-weighted ball, low-weighted ball, columntype, egg-shaped and iron bar-framed) and 2 types of square net cage constructed from both Nylon Raschel netting and Nylon knotted netting, on a 1/20th scale. The deflection of the model nets against the flow was smallest with the iron bar-framed weight compared to the other four types of sinker. It was expected that the optimal shapes of sinkers would be either the ball or egg-shape; however, iron bar-framed weight actually had larger drag forces. The dispersed deployment of sinkers on the bottom frames of model net cages performed better with relatively slow flows, while the concentrated deployment at 4 corners functioned better with relatively fast flows, in preventing the nets from becoming severely deformed. The deformation of the net cages was larger for the Nylon knotted netting than the Nylon Raschel netting. With respect to flow resistance, the Nylon Raschel netting, rather than the Nylon knotted netting, was more suitable for construction of net cages.
1) The decrease in strength of netting twines at the knot may be regarded to be due mainly to the frictional force acting on the tip of the knot. The knot strength T may be given by $$T=\frac{T_0}{1+{\mu}\frac{s}{\rho}\varrho^{\mu\theta}$$ were $T_0$ is the tensile strength of unknotted netting twines, $\mu$ the coefficient of friction beween two netting twines forming a knot, s the contact length between the tip and the netting twine compressing it, $\rho$ the radius of curvature of the compressing, and $\theta$ the angle at which the compressing rubs with another one in the vicinity of the opposite tip. 2) Knots are arranged in order of strength as follows : the reef knot pulled lengthwise $\risingdotseq$ the trawler knot pulled breadtwise the reef knot pulled breadthwise.
