Liquid Crystal Alignment on the SiC Thin Film by the Ion Beam Exposure Method

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of the SiC (Silicon Carbide) thin film. The SiC thin film exhibits good chemical and thermal stability. The good thermal and chemical stability makes SiC an attractive candidate for electronic applications. A vertical alignment of nematic liquid crystal by ion beam exposure on the SiC thin film surface was achieved. The about $87^{\circ}$ of stable pretilt angle was achieved at the range from $30^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$ of incident angle. The good LC alignment is main-tained by the ion beam alignment method on the SiC thin film surface at high annealing temperatures up to 300.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities by the UV alignment method on a diamond like carbon (DLC) thin film surface. A good LC alignment by UV exposure on the DLC thin film surface at $200\AA$ of layer thickness was achieved. Also, a good LC alignment by the UV alignment method on the DLC thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. However, the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the UV alignment method on the DLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of reflective $45^{\circ}$ twisted nematic liquid crystal display which implement the new LC orientation using of in-cell retarder film. For the embodiment of reflective liquid crystal display, essentially the optic compensation films was always needed and attached to the outside of glass substrate. In our study, these optic compensation film were not employed in reflective LC cell. On other hand we have employed the in-cell retarder to substitute the optic compensation film and were able to orient the LC molecules using this in-cell retarder. So we have developed the reflective LC cell that has good optical performances without any additional coating process on the in-cell retarder.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a Carbon Nitride (NDLC) thin film. NDLC thin film exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. A high pretilt angle of about $9.9^{\circ}$ by ion beam (IB) exposure on the NDLC thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment is achieved by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface at annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. The alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • In this study, we investigated the electro-optical(EO) characteristic of fringe-field switching(FFS) mode cell by the two kinds of ultraviolet(UV) alignment method on the organic thin film(polyimide: PI). The suitable organic layersfor FFS cell and the aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) using the in-situ photoalignment method were studied Disclination is observed after conventional photoalignment method for 1h, and in-situ photoalignment method for 1h. Monodomain alignment of the NLC can be observed via in-situ photoalignment method for 2h and 3h. It is considered that NLC alignment is due to photo-depolymerization of the polymer with oblique non-polarized UV irradiation on PI surface. An unstable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with conventional photoalignment method can be achieved. However, a stable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situ photoalignment method(1h), and V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method was much stable comparing with that of other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's. As a result, more stable EO performanceof UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method for 3h is obtained than that of the other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's.

  • In this study, we investigated liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) that non contact alignment technique on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide under various ion beam angles. In this experiment, polyimide layer was coated on glass by spin-coating and Voltage-transmittance(VT) and response time characteristics of the TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system. The good characteristics of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposured polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN cell on polyimide surface.

  • We studied nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film deposited $45^{\circ}$ oblique by rf magnetic sputtering system. Pretilt angle and thermal stability characteristic as well as NLC alignment effect were investigated. A uniform liquid crystal alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film was achieved and pretilt angle was about $90^{\circ}$. The thermal stability of the $SiO_x$ thin film was sustained by $200^{\circ}$.

Control of Pretilt Angles on Various Photo-Crosslinkable Polyimide based Polymers by Photodimerization

  • In this research, we synthesized various photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymers. The control of pretilt angles for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the photodimerization method on the photopolymers was studied. A good thermal stability of the photopolymers was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450C. High pretilt angles of the NLC were otained by polarized UV exposure on the photopolymers containing biphenyl (BP), decyl (de), and cholesteryl (chal) groups, respectively. However, low pretilt angles of the NLC were measured by polarized UV exposure on the photopolymers containing fluorine and chalcone groups. The high NLC pretilt angles generated are attributable to the biphenyl and alkyl moieties, and the photodimerized chalocone group of the photopolymers. Additionally, good voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics were observed by UV exposure on the photopolymers.

  • We studied on an electro-optical (EO) hysteresis, coming from the in-plane modulation of the molecular reorientation, in highly twisted nematic liquid crystal devices. Varying a ratio d/$P_0$ of the cell thickness d to the natural pitch $P_0$, the EO hysteresis and the twisted angle transition were observed and analyzed in terms of the periodicity of the in-plane modulation within the continuum theory.
